Tracey Warren has her last year of high school mapped out; stay focused, graduate in a few months, and get the hell out of Bennington Virginia. Everything is working out in her favor. Life has finally started to normal out, until a car accident sends her plans spiraling out of her control.
Her pedestrian reality crashes around her after an innocuous encounter with a diabolically handsome stranger. Nathan Newcomb has her head and her world altering minute by minute. Soon, she discovers the only cure for the uneasy feelings and abrasive pain is Nathan himself. A man whose very existence balances between violent chaos and rigidly controlled dangers.
Nathan knows the life of a woman mated to a Burdened Sephlem is destined for peril beyond a human’s reckoning, that he’ll be required to literally hand over his heart to her. But Tracey calls to his desire to experience love in spite of the hazards. And Nathan’s impossibly potent magnetism draws Tracey into a bonding that will put her in mortal danger again and again.
Once the pair becomes one, the threat escalates and nowhere is safe. There are enemies that lurk behind every corner. But the greatest danger may be in the bloodlines that course through Nathan’s veins.
Can their love survive or will their burdened souls surrender and fade away?

Reading Burdened was like my worst nightmare coming to life. It had everything that I don't appreciate in books. Burdened had an under-developed story line that seemed to be going so slow that it bored the hell out of me.
The MC Tracey Warren was very annoying; and I've read 49% of the book so it's not like she magically matured after the 20% mark. And the love interest--Nathan Newcomb--hit her with his car, took her to the hospital, took her home, featured in her racy dreams, fell in love with her and that's about it. Also, he was a tyrant. "No, Tracey,""Don't do that Tracey," "Listen to what I say, Tracey," seemed to be the magical phrases their relationship had been built on.
All in all, I really couldn't connect with any characters and since I didn't care about them from beginning up to the point that I read, I thought it best to abort and run.
*I was provided a free ecopy of this book in exchange of an honest review. This did not in any way, however, influence the content of this review.*
I thought the premise of this book was interesting. Unfortunately, I had a hard time connecting to the characters and staying into the story. Part of that was because of the lack of contractions and formal speech for high school kids and the other part was Glen and Scott. There was just too much focus on them for me and frankly, I didn’t care. I wanted to get to know Tracey and Nathan and see their story but every time I turned around, Glen and Scott were there too. When Tracey and Nathan were together, they either sounded their age or a lot older and it just left me disconnected from them.
I think the premise of this book was great, and it had some good things in it. But for me, it just didn’t work that well. I can see other people really enjoying it though.
Burdened is the first book in the New Adult series of the same name. I had such high hopes for Burdened. I thought the cover was pretty and creepy at the same time- perfect for the paranormal element of the story, and I thought the summary had lots of potential to unique and very interesting. I love stories involving being mated to someone. I thought this would be right up my alley, but I think by this point you are starting to see that a big BUT is coming.
And here it is...But Burdened just didn't work for me. I thought the story was ok, but the book on a whole was just a lot more cringe-worthy than it was enjoyable. I put this book down about 10 times, sometimes with the intention of not picking it up again, and sometimes because I just needed a break from it. But each time I convinced myself to go back because I wanted to see how the story would turn out. The plot was interesting. Which is what makes this review so tough for me.
I couldn't connect with the characters and I big reason for that was the writing. Now, I don't mean to say that the writing was not technically sound, good writing. It was. Peiri Ann is not a bad writer. It just felt like the book was trying to be something it wasn't. The writing didn't flow and it didn't feel conversational enough to me. It felt like the stiff, buttoned up writing of an academic paper. I just couldn't get it to fit in with the vibe of a new adult paranormal romance with magic and mystery swirling around. And then to top it off, the story didn't ever feel 100% believable to me. It felt forced and very convenient.
As much as it pains me to say it, Burdened just didn't work for me. Some books are just not meant to be, no matter how much you want them to be. But that is not to say that other people, and perhaps many, many other people, would not only enjoy but completely love the Burdened Series. I hope that you and all other future readers are those people. But I won't be continuing on with this series.
Tracey Warren is an average high school student whose just looking to have fun with her friends as she counts down the days to her graduation. Tracey's life goes from hum drum to exciting when she gets rear ended by a sexy stranger on her way home from school. One touch from Nathan Newcomb leaves Tracey with a physical craving for him that can only be satisfied when he is in her proximity. Tracey finds herself thinking about him all of the time and the two share an attraction that neither one can ignore. But Nathan is a powerful Sephlem, and choosing to be his mate and becoming "bounded" with him leads Tracey into a world filled with danger and intrigue.
I really wanted to like this book. Who doesn't love a good paranormal romance filled with danger, betrayal, and juicy plot twists?? This book had a lot of promise but it also had several issues. The dialect between the characters was awkward and the tone was often unrealistic. There were a lot of grammatical errors and the over use of the phrase "you all" was just plain annoying. Also, the plot didn't flow naturally. There was a big climatic scene in the middle of the book that would have made a really good ending!
What I liked: I liked the overall story and the relationships between Nathan and both Tracey and with his family. I liked the numerous plot twists and "oh shoot" moments. Even though I didn't give this book a high rating, I will read the rest of the series to see how it ends. With a little bit of plot development and a good editor, this could easily be a 4 - 5* star book.
Burdened is a beautiful, entertaining, dark, deep, smart, and funny paranormal romance novel. The prologue is the best I've ever read and just perfect for this novel. Here it is:
The love I have can last a lifetime alone, in the darkness waiting for the mate of love to return to the side of a lonely heart. But I cannot wait long past tomorrow to hold you, hear you, and see you in my arms. Without my arms wrapped around you, our bodies wound within one another. There is no darkness emptier then I at that exact moment. There is no depth lower than the empty feeling I have from longing for you. For this love is greater than any I have had the pleasure of feeling. For this love is you. - Nathan
That prologue was read countless times and had me thinking I was about to read a modern, paranormal, version of Romeo & Juliet. After reading a few chapters I befriended the author on Goodreads and discovered one of her author influences is Shakespeare. The author's writing style continues to show that influence...and it's worth highlighting.
Nathan and Tracey's relationship is strong, unforgettable, and deep. Nathan is the ultimate, sexy, smart, hot, bad boy...and a great boyfriend. Tracey is strong, smart, brave, loyal to a fault, beautiful, and an amazing girlfriend. What they endure throughout the beginning of their relationship is astounding. It is reminscent of a Stephen King novel with paranormal elements. Most couples wouldn't last. Do they?
Here is the blurb:
Tracey Warren has everything an eighteen year old girl should. She lives a life of expectancies; go to school, please her parents, party with friends, and revel in life as a young adult. That is until she experiences an unexpected life changing accident caused by Nathan Newcomb; an illegally attractive yet perplexed guy who has her fumbling over her words and cracking her head on the concrete. In being enthralled by his overwhelming existence, Tracey neglects his promise of death (which never falls short of Nathan) and in ignoring his guarantee, she chooses to give into love over sanity and risks her life for the opportunity of being with him.
Nathan, knowing the risks gives into this want to have Tracey presuming it may be better to jeopardize their possible ending, than to allow her to endure the pain of his devoid. Nonetheless, with him being a burdened Sephlem, not only are they burdened by their adversaries who will risk everything but the exposure of their existence to see Nathan fall. But Nathan and Tracey come to find that their most sinister enemies lie under their same roof and regrettably share the same bloodline.
Love the writing style, characters, secondary characters, humor, horror, plot development, suspense, thrills, and surprises.
However, I only recommend Burdened to readers 18-up. The subject matter, in my opinion, is not suitable for those under 18. Nathan and Tracey's relationship is also, in my opinion, not suitable for anyone under 18. If you're over 18, I strongly urge you to read this novel.
I got 30% into his book and I just can't finish it...
It's from Tracy's POV and its just annoying to be in her head.. I know it's a NA read but sometimes they can surprise you.. This one didn't... Tracy claims she trust Nathan and accepts his life style but questions everything... She just became annoying.. She knew he couldn't tell her everything but gets mad that he doesn't.. Bratty female characters drive me crazy... Him not being human was fine but the story behind it just didn't make sense to me... Tracy's mom just leaving her home for a long period of time and she is a high school student... not calling to check on her... was unrealistic to me... And then there wasn't enough smut.. I'll admit it... It builds you up then shuts the doors on you (because Tracy wanted him soooooo bad and just couldn't wait).. I need more... I want detail..
I just couldn't get into it... I found myself losing interest and skimming parts... I tried and failed..
Wow, I was surprised by this book. At first I wasn’t sure what to think but it was interesting. It started off slow for me but once both these characters met I was pulled back into the story and was very much into finding out what was going to happen.
Both of these two, Nathan and Tracey, hit it off right from the start after she got hit by his car. Don’t worry, she was in her own car so it wasn’t that bad but of course she blacks out literally from his touch. So from here on out she’s bind to him and can feel every emotion of hurt, pain, love, and happiness from him, through him, and with him. Of course he’s also in her head reading her thoughts too and can telecommunicate with her which is funny and can be a bit difficult to follow but was pretty funny and enjoyable to read.
I can tell you I liked Nathan, the hero a lot. He was the kind of hero that spoke to me because he wasn’t afraid to do as he wished and did things the way he liked them to be done. He knew how to control himself lets say, and didn’t hold back; he was also very open about his feelings towards Tracey. And of course he’s always the one that is rational when they’re together, but then he is the problem to why Tracey isn’t in her right mind. Because of his strong influence on how she feels towards him when they’re around each other and him towards her, she isn’t strong enough to control both her and his own desires yet. So it was super sweet of him when he didn’t give into their desires and watched out for her in that way because he knows she’s smarter than that than jump on a guy she barely even knew. Oh yeah, and he’s not “normal”. He looks like a human but he’s a Sephlem, a creature of sorts with tainted demon’s blood, the most feared and dangerous kind of Sephlem.
That being said, Tracey can be a bit….off. She’s not the most interesting person but I liked her in getting the story moving. She likes things done quick and to the point. She doesn’t like waiting around for things to happen and can be very upfront and reserved. She’s strong in her own way and independent but she can be aloof at times and many times when she’s with Nathan. But she’s fearless and risks her life to be with Nathan, dispite knowing that she, or the both of them could die.
There is one thing though, I’m not sure if it was the way the author portrayed Tracey in they way she wrote her in first person but I knew I liked her, just not as much as I would have liked from how it was written. It wasn’t bad but that was the part that held me back on really enjoying her as a heroine.
When I started this book I knew something was up or brewing when it came down to “explaining” what Nathan was but I didn’t know how it was all going to effect the story or keep it going other than endangering both of their lives. But one sure thing that kept beating my head was that this story was for Twilight fans. And sure enough it was really close to the story, Beautiful Creatures – just the opposite in gender and other stuff. But yes, that was what it reminded me of right when it hit the part where the hero Nathan disclosed to her what he was and how it’ll effect their relationship. But anyways……
For a 400 page book I found it kind of too fast paced on the relationship part. I just couldn’t figure out or believe that they could really fall for each other that quick even if the attraction was all there. I was hoping for more of a build up to the relationship rather than just jumping right on it. It was good but I wanted a bit more but then it would have thrown off the whole plot and mystery and all that so maybe it was just me. Plus, it’s a paranormal and love at first sight, touch, sense….etc…. it all throws it off balance.
So yup, the story was very interesting. How there were many ups and downs to the story as both of them fight to survive whomever it is that’s trying to separate their love and even kill them while doing it. There were lots of tensions and sexual tensions which was great and to which I highly enjoyed because of its pure teenage lust full of exploding hormones! But yeah, It’ll say it was a great run reading this, I wouldn’t mind reading another one of these if there were to be a squeal of sorts. And the only true problem I had with this book were the grammatical errors and word building choices chosen to tell the story. They can be a bit distracting and truthfully, it almost landed this in the DNF pile, but I just wanted to know more about what was going to happen and it was a good ride.
Not particularly a paranormal reader I though it was good.
This book was generously provided by the author for an honest review.
Review: I want to say thanks to Xpresso Book Tours and Netgalley for letting read this book for exchange of an honest review. To be honest this was a fairly good book. I had this book on my currently reading shelf for ever and I just started and finish it today. When it first started I had the vibe of the Significance by Shelly Crane. I loved that book but this book seemed to had and climbing point then it just dropped off and left things dragging out. It got boring around 60% since the main event of the story was over. To me it could have been around 230 or 260 and would have been a better book. I did enjoy the book. It was good but it wasn't great.
Plot- So I did say this was like Significance. Though everything sort of dropped off. I don't really know how to describe this plot without giving away too much. I love how there is totally new set of paranormal creatures done here in this book. The past and history of these creatures are really big in the story. These creatures are called Sephlem. I am so happy that the author didn't do a the typical creatures like vampires and werewolves. She created her whole new species. And maybe that is why this book lost plot is because as a reader and the main character we have to find out about them as we go long. There was a lot of death, backstabbing and betrayed in this book like no joke every so many pages. It was very tenses and had a lot of drama too. Sometimes drama is good and keeps the book going but a little over the second half of the book thats all the book lived off is drama, death, backstabbing, and betrayal. Making it quite boring. None of the characters really developed as stronger person and character either making the characters the same the whole entire book.
Characters- Tracey is a 18 year-old human on spring break. She was quite normal until she met Nathan. Tracey seemed like a strong character in the beginning and she then became a little annoying and needy throughout the book even though that was because of the their binding to each other. Like I said above she didn't really developed into anything. Nathan is her mate and he was an alright character he seemed like Damon Black. I thought he lost a lot of his attitude through the book but he didn't change drastically. Another character was Glenn she seemed like the best friend even though she was annoying and boy she didn't become any less annoying. I never really liked her through the book. The last character that popped up often was Scott. He seemed like a really nice guy and then he became very annoying.
Overall- This was a fairly decent book and I will be continuing this series as I have the next book to read as well. I don't really have high expectations for the next book because this book was sort of a disappointment. I just loved this story and I know this will go into better depth as I continue. I have very conflicted on what to give this book I don't want to rate it. Its really worth reading but it isn't the next best book.
This book had potential for the storyline but it just didn't pan out for me. There were too many unnecessary details that did not need to be included. It is supposed to be about Tracey and Nathan falling in love and having to deal with people wanting to kill Nathan because he is part Demon. Some exes of Nathan's show up at his door at different times and it was deja vu reading the scenes. It did not add anything to the story. Don't even get me started on Glen and Scott. Lord have mercy they are just a mess and distracted from Nathan and Tracey. Nathan is part Sephlem and part demon. We are never told what a Seplem is but I will just assume some sort of Angel since the other part is Demon, but it would have been nice to be told what a Sephlem is. Nathan's father does not like that he has kids that are half demon so he tries to kill them multiple times with the mom coming in and saving the day. Then they all sit down for family dinner. I am not kidding! If my husband hated our children and vice versa I would not be married to him any more. The beginning was very slow for me and sometimes the dialogue did not seem real to me for how teenagers would talk. It did pick up about halfway, but every time it would get good, Scott and Glen would show up and they did not add anything to the story either. Scott is also part Sephlem part Demon but he wouldn't tell Glen anything so they just fought the whole book. After finishing the book I realized the entire book takes place over one week. I think Nathan and Tracey should have had a little more time knowing each other. She commits to him and does not even know his last name. The book just seemed rushed.
Even if I could get over the utter shallowness of all the girls in this book the writing was unbelievably awkward. 70% of what i managed to read was just unnecessarily detailed descriptions of every single character we met even if they served no purpose...and we met a lot of characters in the 30 pages before i quit. Second the dialogue was...just not good. On one end of the spectrum there's the valley girl drivel "omg do you think he likes me" "totes"-these aren't actual quotes but you get my drift. The other end of the spectrum was really stiff formal language. "You all" appeared 3 times in 2 paragraphs, twice in the same sentence. It read awkwardly. There were teenagers speaking like they were writing a term paper "must not use contractions." Really even spectrum is probably not the phrase since it was at either end...there was no middle. It all just felt very forced and the thirty odd pages i read gave me no reason to care at all what happened to the heroine who seemed to be a snooty rich spoiled little heifer. it might've gotten better but i wasn't prepared to take the chance of wasted time. DNF
I was allowed a copy of this book via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. I am huge fan of paranormal and romance. Mix the two together and it is the best chocolate sundae ever, with a cherry on top. Having said that, I am always a little hesitant to pick up paranormal books because I find that much of the time they are terrible. However, Burdened is a diamond find. I loved all of the paranormal aspects. I enjoyed the dialogue among charcters and the different ways in which they communicated their feelings. It was refreshing to see love and romance mixed in with the storyline in ways that remained true to the characters, not forced or fake. I am so happy to have been introduced to this book. I just saw the post on Goodreads today from Peiri Ann stating that the second book would be released soon. I'm ready!!
As much as it pains me (since I usually try to push through some books I did not fully enjoy), I did not finish this book. I'll admit, I was intrigued by the cover and the description was promising, but there were a few things that irked me or did not make sense.
***spoilers ahead, you've been warned***
*also since I didn't finish it, my review isn't complete*
The book starts off as the typical Mary Sue - the damsel in distress as her car gets hit by the incredibly hot and mysterious new guy. From there things seemed to progress rather quickly between the two and the time line is a bit unclear to me. At one point, Tracey's mom is out of town for "a few days," but it seems like a lifetime. Also, Tracey can be annoying, claiming she trusts Nathan but questions everything.
Four Times Broken and I did not really get along. However, I think some people may still enjoy it as a quick paranormal romance read.
My main issue is that it's very heavy on the YA Paranormal tropes, even in just the first few chapters, which is something that I do not enjoy and felt kind of forced too. It has super-duper-insta-love, a 'bad boy' love-interest that went from hot to cold in a matter of a few sentences, and a bit too many villains/problems for just the first book in a series.
There were some aspects of the Sephlem storyline that I found interesting and would like to read about in the sequel, but because of the type of story it is I don't think the author will go there, unfortunately.
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher through Netgalley.
This story has that certain something that makes it intriguing on a few levels. Great cover which addresses the target audience effectively. I liked the internal graphics too. On the surface it looks professionally put together. Unfortunately, while there is great potential here, my overall evaluation of this title is that it is really under-cooked. Quite simply, what we have here is a very rough diamond that needs a lot of editing in order to bring it to industry standard,
Firstly, in spite of the fact that the protagonist is YA aged and the story is targeted at a YA audience, I have trouble reading this as fitting here. The author has included way too much detail in the way of erotica for it to ever be considered seriously within the YA genre. While acceptable for YA to include sex scenes, these are generally deemed acceptable if they are 'fade to black', vague and certainly infrequent. Problem is the author fails to recognise this standard and writes with the freedom that one would with General Fiction. Perhaps the best place to situate this book is in New Adult....only the protagonist still being in High School makes this tricky.
While the characters of Tracey and Nathan are fairly well fleshed out, it seems that more effort is needed to develop the minor characters. Tracey's parents, in particular, feel awkward and the relationship she has with them seems inauthentic. They say stupid "un-parentlike' things with all the clunkiness of robots. The author possibly crosses over into the weird zone a few too many times (Nathan's reference to her parents 'coming' was way too inappropriate to include in YA and was frankly just strange).
While I am not adverse to a long story, this book is way too long. Kill those darlings.....in fact, please slaughter them. The author is a waffler. She includes details that add nothing to the story or my understanding of character. Too much telling. Too much telling. I beg you (again) to show not tell. This novel needs a serious edit that includes major chapter revisions, omissions, overhauls, restructuring. There is a story somewhere but it is getting lost in all that waffle.
While the premise and the world the author has created is interesting, I wasn't believing her. I think a lot of refining is needed here and with careful edits it has the potential to work.
Grammar and spelling needs attention. Please learn the correct use of principle/principal. Enough said.
This story is not a lost cause and I didn't hate it. It is just a very good rough draft. Hone your rock with care and you may just be able to make it sparkle.
Burdened starts out very mysteriously in the beginning and a little slow at first, but as the book progresses things got more interesting. I liked the spark of interest that ignited between Tracy and Nathan, and I also liked the hot and cold attitude Nathan had towards Tracey. It was infuriating but it was very entertaining. It also keeps you guessing what will happen next. Tracy is sassy and headstrong which I love in a character. She is a strong heroine that can stand on her own. Nathan is mysterious, handsome, and protective, which makes me fall in love with him as the story progresses. Although some people may not like how smooth he can come off as in the book or a little over the top, it fits with the premise of the story. Speaking of the premise of the story, I found it fascinating. We are introduced to these new creatures called the Sephlem and although it is a little complicated to understand at first, it becomes easier to understand as we learn more about Nathan and his past. This book is full of creativity and action. It is probably one of the most action filled books I have ever read. Burdened is one of those books that start off in a normal setting and by the end it feels like you are in a completely different world. I cannot decide how I feel about it, but I can say that it is interesting. It will be very easy to lose yourself in this book because it feels like this is four books all rolled into one. This book has so much action and so many scenes that feel like the climax of the story that it feels like you are reading a series in one book. If you need a book to get lost in (in a good way) then Burdened is the book for you. The pacing of the book can be a little overwhelming but I like that sometimes. This truly is a book that will completely capture your attention. A few warnings for some of you, one, this book is a mature young adult book so if you do not like mature content in your books then this book isn’t for you. Also, the whole premise of this book revolves around a girl falling for this guy and they are interested in each other right from the start. It fits with the story, but I know some people hate the idea of love at first sight so I figured I would go ahead and warn you. I really liked this book, some characters annoyed me and the pacing can be a little overwhelming, but over all I really enjoyed this story. I am looking forward to the sequal to see what happens next.
Interesting paranormal story with demon and mate. I love these kinds of stories, where you find the ordinary girl next door and the sexy newcomer that hide strange secrets that meet and fall in love instantly. Peiri Ann gives the readers a new kind of YA Paranormal Romance with a lot of action, sensuality and danger at every corner.
Nathan and Tracey meets under weird circumstances, but then everything will change for both of them. Nathan is a burdened Sephlem, one kind of a demon that mates for life. Powers, abilities, burden, murder, battle and survival is part of Nathan's life, but is now a part of Tracey's too. Danger is lurking everywhere because burdened mates are sharing the same heart. Tracey is not only the love of Nathan but his life too.
In Burdened, Tracey learns about demons and the existence of a paranormal world. Her life is changed forever because of her love for Nathan and their shared relationship. They are both target to other demons who doesn't appreciate this new association.
A lot happen in a really short time. From my POV, it's too quick and doesn't seem real to fit in this among of time. I don't want to spoil anything but the whole story unfolds in less than two weeks.
I loved the fact that Tracey's best friend Glen was experiencing the same thing with Nathan's cousin Scott. That add awkward and funny moment to this story, but Scott and Glen are different. Their relation isn't as easy and romantic as Tracey and Nathan. By the end of this book, I had enough of them, especially Glen who's childish beyond reason!
I think this story have a lot of potential, the author Peiri Ann have a lot of imagination and great writing skills. The originality behind Burdened is inviting and thrilling, I can't wait to read the sequel! I loved to read about this new world and discovering the creature and their superpowers.
Action is what described this book the best. There is no rest for the wicked! Every part of this book is built to entertain and maintain the fast paced rhythm!
Overall, Burdened is a great asset to the YA Paranormal world of books and if you're a fan of this kind of read, this title is for you, a must-try!
Oh my God, this book was awful! I had to literally force myself to finish this book. First of all, it was never explained what a Sephlem is or how they came to be. All Nathan tells us is:
"I never cared enough about our history to know how the hell we got here and why, I just know I exist."
Also, the plot moved sooo sloooowly, after one third of the book there are signs of a plot moving forward but most of the time it's just Nathan and Tracey interacting, mostly kissing though, and they were so stupid and boring characters.
There was no chemistry at all between Tracey and Nathan. They only "loved" each other because they were mates. They know each other for a couple of days and Tracey can already tell that he is The One? She doesn't even know him! Sometime around the middle of the book Tracey has to call Nathan but hasn't even got his phone number! And she didn't know when his birthday was even though they are non-stop together.
Tracey is naïve, spineless, annoying, childish and selfish. She calls Glen her best friend but treats her like shit and is always irritated with her because Glen disturbs her CONSTANT alone time with Nathan.
Nathan is controlling and overbearing, a Mr. Know-It-All and treats Tracey like a child. He always tells her what to do, so commanding!
Parents were absent for about two thirds of this book. How convenient. Some characters didn't make sense at all, Like Michael, Tracey's ex-boyfriend, or Natalia, Nathan's mom. I mean, she was totally okay with someone very dear to her getting killed and she forgave the murderer like "No biggie!".
Also, there were several spelling mistakes throughout the book.
I completely got lost in this book. Tracey is a typical high school senior. She and her best friend Glen are planning to go to a big party and both have 'crushes' on guys that goes beyond the norm. Nathan isn't your average guy, but when he runs into Tracey (literally), their lives intertwine and they become pulled to each other. Tracey doesn't understand it but Nathan does and tries to, at least somewhat, avoid it. His family is different and has secrets and if Tracey chooses to be with him, it could absolutely put her life and his in danger. I really, really liked Tracey and Nathan. The two of them are good together, and even if they have secrets, they do work through their issues. I really had issues with the other couple and Scott's keeping things from his 'mate'. They intrude on Tracey and Nathan more often than not and it just gets completely out of hand! There is romance, action, betrayal, and all sorts of things going on in this book that keep you intrigued. The author did a good job with the characters and making the story flow well. Some times the characters' personalities change a bit, but it doesn't take away from the overall story. I will definitely be reading the next in this series to see what happens to the family. Solid 4/5 for a mature YA or adult. I wouldn't let younger YA readers read it just yet because of the adult content.
Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book (via PUYB). I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
I was not a fan of this book. It suffered by being both too much and not enough.
The story had promise, but there was too much of the same tug of war between Tracey & Nathan, and not enough of them actually doing anything. Cuddling, painful yearning, hanging out at each other's houses, and worrying about not being able to do those things is not a fulfilling plot. Just as actual events started happening, the book ended.
Tracey was WAY too insipid and there was not nearly enough of her doing anything on her own. Her obsession with Nathan was creepy, not romantic or otherworldly. She was constantly talked down and put off - the book should have been titled "Don't, Tracey," since that warning phrase seemed to be a favorite of various men in this book for putting her in her place. When she trusted her instinct, she was usually wrong. Just as she was starting to come into her own, the book ended.
There was too much useless detail, but not enough critical plot information. We knew every stitch of clothing the characters were wearing, but the explanation what Sephlem and burdened were - the crux of the story, the title of the book! - were completely glossed over.
And finally, "you are" was incorrectly contracted to "your" entirely too often (every single time). Not enough "you're."
I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock. I have to say I was very surprise with Burdened by Peiri Ann. The beginning of the story was a little slow for me and I though I was flat out not going to like it or get bored but I was sooo wrong. Tracy is a senior in high school that meets Nathan after he hits her car and once he touches her she has all this emotions and feelings running through her that she is so confused with herself the situation and doesn’t know what to do. Now Nathan in the other hand knows what is going on due to the secret he tries to keep from Tracy in order to protect her but even though their relationship is risky he still goes for what he wants.
I give this book 4 fangs and I am looking forward for the next in the series
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads. Burdened started off with such promise for a New Adult novel. The instant connection between the main characters started off with a natural paranormal feel. And then it was like the author stopped listening to her characters and forced them instead. There was a rollercoaster of oh my yes this good to hmm WTH with the overall flow of the storyline and interaction between characters. As a general read I enjoyed the book. I would read the next one just to see if the author improves the characters. I didn’t hate the book by any means but I just didn’t love it either.
Review: (I received a copy from Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review)
This book was completely addicting. The second I started it, I found myself not wanting to put it down. The author created a unique storyline that is unlike anything I have read before. She took the time to develop a plot line that extended beyond the two main characters and because of that, you find yourself sucked into their world.
The only concern I had was that some of the conversations didn't really flow. The way they would greet one another would come across awkward. Once I got used to that the story was smooth reading from then on. Would definitely recommend this book to my friends.
I quickly fell in love with this book. The characters, the relationships, the authors writing style. It was hard to put it down. This is the first book that I've purchased on my kindle, I usually go for the free ones, and I do not regret it.
I will read this one over and over again. I'm highly anticipating the second book in the series. I've read the promo chapter and a half she has on her blog and I'm dying to read Tainted! I can't wait to see how Tracey and Nathan's relationship ends up.
I do however want to warn against letting younger readers read this novel. Along with some adult content, there are some pretty gory scenes. I don't know how Miss Peiri Ann could have done any better on this novel. I'm completely and officially a big fan of hers!
This was an interesting book, good, but interesting. It started out slow and I thought it might be a DNF for me, really I was almost to the point of putting it down when I decided to give it a few more pages. Then I got sucked in. The characters are well written just wish the details would be more pronounced. All in all I liked it, wish it didn't start out slow or it would have gotten a better star rating.
The beginning of the book pulled me in. Nathan and Tracey have that insta-love thing going on. But thats where the book lost me. I couldn't get past the back and forth of being "in love and wondering if he really loves me". Love plot it just the story line was all over the place.
It caught my attention completely. I chose it randomly and don't regret it. It mixes many stories I know and makes it the best. I absolutely want to read the second!
Eighteen-year-old Tracey Warren is a ‘run-of-the-mill’ high school student on the verge of graduation. She has her friends and her fun; she has life all figured out. Or she thought she did. Her pedestrian reality crashes around her after an innocuous touch from a diabolically handsome stranger. Just one touch from Nathan Newcomb and her head and her world spins out of control. Soon she discovers that the only cure for the uneasy feelings and pain is Nathan himself. A man whose very existence balances between violent chaos and rigidly controlled dangers. Nathan knows that the life of a woman mated to a burdened Sephlem is destined for peril beyond a human’s reckoning.
Can a love for all time survive or will their burdened souls surrender and fade away?

My 3.5 star review.

I love this cover!
Burdened wasn't what I initially thought it was going into it. It's a paranormal romance with a different feel. I really thought the idea behind the book was great but the execution I found somewhat lacking. It started out at a great pace and you meet the h and H right away and (definitely) feel their connection, that spark and chemistry. It was very descriptive and I found myself getting that fluttery feeling while reading about them. Where it lacked for me was getting to the who, what, where, and why's. I found it to be a very long book and as soon as something would get settled or straightened out something new would happen. Nathan (H) and Tracey (h) just couldn't seem to get a break and then to top it off they had to deal with Tracey's annoying friend Glen and Nathan's equally annoying cousin Scott.
So in Nathan and Scott's world they mate and when they find that mate there is an undeniable connection that actually hurts deeply down to their and their "mates" core; skin on fire hurt if you are not with that person. And when you are with that person it's the same feeling but it feels complete when you are together like the fire is being put out but your body still is exploding. It's hard to explain but the author did a good job of writing this. What I didn't understand is how these people or Sephelm's both ironically find their mates at the same time after several years. They are very old so it was bizarre that both Nathan and Scott found the ones they should be forever bound to within a few weeks of each other and they just so happen to be best friends. There is also a lot of repetition in it, especially about how they chose each other. It's mentioned a lot.
I loved the darkness and mystery behind Nathan's father but found it odd how his mother let the father repeatedly try to kill his children and be okay with it, Like well that's just your father and he doesn't like what you guys were born as so he wants you dead. I did like the twist toward the end...I didn't see that coming. I thought the dialogue was great. I found the mind communication very unique to the story and I wrote a note on my Kindle saying "love this," some times when they communicated that way I would find myself laughing and picturing Tracey trying to look sane while having a conversation in her head. It put a little light in the book which I thoroughly enjoyed. Loved Tracey's strong character and personalty. What I liked about that in particular was she was kinda feisty and strong but because of the connection between her and Nathan she found it hard to push him away and I could feel that in reading the book how she was struggling with her independence and being clingy but she couldn't stay away. I really liked Nathan too. He was honest for the most part and what he didn't tell Tracey was because he wanted to protect her and keep her safe. And he struggled with it and you could feel that too. . Unlike Scott who kept Glen in the dark the whole book. Yeah he seemed to struggle with it but it got old and I just couldn't like Scott he seemed like such a hypocrite.
I have a love for epilogues but I didn't feel the epilogue in this book was necessary and it didn't really tie things up for me which I think an epilogue should do. I believe this book is a series so I think the epilogue would have been better at the end of the series.
All in all I found this book to be interesting it was a different spin on a paranormal romance which I appreciated. As I mentioned before I found it to be a little long and repetitive at times but I think it's worth the read.
This is book #1 in the burdened series. I have such a special bond with Felisha and her burdened series. I was lucky enough to look at and beta books 1 and 2 in the series and am now rereading them all in preparation for book 4 which has just landed on amazon. Before reading this first book, I had never had any inclination or desire to read in this genre, then this first book dropped into my lap literally. I have to say that I am completely blown away with the story line of Nathan and Tracey. This is a fast paced book with something going on in every chapter, that makes you need to read just one more before you need to put it down......hence why even on my third reading I’m still finding it exciting, full of characters and feeling as if I’ve just opened it for the very first time even though I know what’s coming next. As I read, I can see every character and scene alive and playing out in my head, that’s how brilliant Felisha’s writing talent is. Each chapter ending moves onto the next chapters beginning smoothly, if you only read on series of books this year then please let it be this one! Thank you Felisha for being so talented and bringing us a great, exciting and well written story.
The plot of this book is all over the place. Everything was fine up until about halfway through, when basically everything was resolved. After that, random people kept appearing to cause trouble for no apparent reason. Scott and his girl were incredibly annoying. The main characters were okay. The story was fine if unoriginal, but nothing in it pulled me in. Also, it should have just ended when everything was resolved. There was no reason for it to drag on after that. Also, there was this really weird section where they went outside and then Nathan suddenly ripped her shorts off and they got frisky and suddenly were back in his bedroom? I think they might have skipped over that while editing? There were more parts where I had to go read back because I felt like I had missed something, but even reading back, it just wasn't there.
