NED SCALES A MOUNTAIN; OPIE LOSES HER LUNCH. Yup, it's VARMINTS all right, in which a girl with a broken gun and her overeager kid brother pursue their deadbeat Pa, the Criminal King of the West! In this debut issue, Opie and Ned get right into it with a saloon fight over a very popular hat. Also a man wearing a bear, sweet horse stunts, and beans.

Hirsch, Andy Varmints, 214 pgs. GRAPHIC NOVEL First Second, 2016 (Roaring Brook Press). $16.99. Content: Language: PG (1 swear); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG.

Two siblings, Opie and Ned, are trying to find their missing father, a man named “Pa”. As they go about their journey they find themselves among wild outlaws in the West and they find a few friends. Opie tries to keep Ned safe but it’s a big job for a kid and sometimes Opie finds them in more trouble than she can handle.

This graphic novel has a fast paced story line and it is often times humorous. However, they main characters can be a bit frustrating and the ending wasn’t satisfying enough to make me want to read more. The violence is shootings and fighting. The mature content is PG because one of the scenes takes place in a brothel.
