Boone Coleman never wanted to be a rancher. When he inherited one of the largest ranches from his grandfather, he assured the employees they could keep their jobs and run the ranch on their own. He was leaving to find his way, and that way led him to become one of the most feared bounty hunters.
When Lucy Chase’s father died, she was forced to work for her uncle in his saloon. When she helped Boone, her uncle threw her out. Alone and afraid, Lucy made her way out of town.
Boone felt compassion and some guilt that Lucy was alone. He offered her a safe place at his ranch.
Boone didn’t have plans to live at the ranch until circumstances forced him to change his mind.
Will Boone and Lucy find love when forced to share a home?

Wyoming, 1868, Boone and Grace Coleman have just buried their parents. Boone is barely eighteen, but is determined to go after the men who shot and killed their parents. Grace is only twelve, and Boone has arranged for her to go to St. Louis, Missouri, to live with Aunt Carolyn and Uncle James. He has promised her that someday, when she is grown, she can return to the ranch they jointly own. That was the beginning of his Bounty Hunting career—he hunts down the men who killed their parents and brings them in.
Boone is after the Gween brothers, and spots one of their horses outside a saloon, where he will approach Deke Gween, and while he does drop his gunbelt, he turns with a knife in his hand, but before anything could happen, a young woman hits Deke over the head with a whiskey bottle. Lucy Chase is ordered to pack and leave by her Uncle Mack. After Deke is in jail, Boone will discover Lucy on the side of the road crying; he buys her a horse, and they avoid towns, where he will take her to stay hidden at his ranch.
The story has the good, the bad, and the ugly of people. Boone is a man who has been righting the wrongs of criminals. He would rather bring them in alive and let the law deal with them, but if need be, he will bring them in dead. Lucy lost her mother to fever when she was ten, and her dad drowned himself in the bottle. When Uncle Mack took her in, selling the ranch, he kept half the profits. He’d promised Lucy she would be cared for and never have to work upstairs, but lately, he has been threatening her. The Double C Ranch is the largest in the state, and while Boone is out on bounty hunts, he has reliable people to watch over the ranch. He knows it will be a safe place for Lucy.
Overall, this was an interesting story, but the author mixes up details involving Lucy Chase’s parents and Boone’s sister, Grace, who has grown up and returned to the ranch. In Chapter 11, a gift to Grace from Boone is a locket, similar to the one their mother always wore, which was to go to Grace. Even her editor didn’t pick up on these.
Chapter 11: ‘Grace opened the box and began to cry.’ “It’s just like the one Mama had. She always said it would be mine when I was grown. When the fever took Mama and Papa, the doctor wouldn’t let us touch anything they were wearing, and they buried Mama wearing her locket. Now, I have one, too. Thank you, Boone. Thank you, you remembered about Mama’s locket.” –Grace to Boone
Chapter 13: “Something broke in Boone when Mama and Papa were killed. He and I were in town at the mercantile when they were killed, and Boone said if he had been closer, he could have saved them. I think he keeps hunting men to make up for not saving Mama and Papa. As if he is keeping the world safe. He needs a reason to stop and settle down. That reason is you.”—Grace to Lucy.
I enjoyed the book! Boone became a bounty hunter after his parents were killed in a robbery. Lucy met Boone when she helped subdue the man he was trying to arrest. She was kicked out of the saloon and Boone took her to his ranch for her safety. I highly recommend reading this book!
Boone and Lucy’s story is so inspiring, full of danger, kidnapping, a bounty hunter, family and the faith to bring them all together. With some lively characters and adventures abound.
A very nice book to read by Marianne Spitzer. This was an enjoyable book to read. There are laughs and some sad parts in this book. Over all quite nice to read.
