Kids have great memories–or at least my kid does :) but I think it’s a general rule that holds true too. One of the books that I got for my birthday was “The Well-Versed Family: raising kids of faith through do-able scripture memory” by Caroline Boykin. It’s an easy read book, but full of lots of practical “mom advice” on how to make your home centered around God’s Word through memorization.

If you’re a mom of preschoolers you know that you don’t have time to go look up that verse that deals with lying when you’re in the middle of figuring out who really dumped the bowl of fruit on the floor and then smashed the bananas into slippery boats, you need it in your head ready to use (right along with the verse about being slow to anger :P ). But how do you get your kids interested in scripture memorization?

“As parents, the best thing we can do to nurture a well-versed family is to foster our own loving relationship with God. Our authentic, personal love for God provides a solid basis for spiritual training in our homes. The Lord wants us to love him with all we have and with all we are, so that we can pass this same love on to our children.” (p. 38)

It starts with us. Our actions show our kids whats really important to us, if we always find time to watch our favorite TV program but never have time to sit down and read the Bible, they get the message loud and clear– the TV is more important than the Bible. Let’s work at re-ordering our lives to reflect how Great and Mighty our God is!

Lord, help me to demonstrate to my kids each day how important You are, how worthy of praise You are. Help us to learn Your Words and to obey the command to hide your Word in our hearts so that we might not sin against You.

I heard the author speak recently and I was interested in learning more. She encourages and excites you to get into scripture memory with your kids at the same time diminishing a lot of common excuses and fears of doing so.
My son is 3(perfect time to start) and he already knows a few verses- which I am blessed to hear him recite them!
I grew up with AWANA doing Bible memory and will probably try my son in it this year too for more blessings of scripture memory and fun together.
Thanks Caroline for sharing your heart in this book!!

Quick read and full of practical and hands-on tips, suggestions and resources for instilling God's word in our kid's hearts.

The first half focuses more on the importance of Scripture memorization, and the second half is focused more on specific ways you can implement memorization. Also has a list of resources at the end to take advantage of (bulk of the resources are free).
