When a madman and a giant flaming thing attack James Lawrie’s Marine outpost, the medic and an explosively talented sergeant aren’t supposed to save the day. Life becomes no simpler when Petty Officer Lawrie returns home on leave to find federal agents investigating the disappearance of a young woman from his past. A young woman whose body turns up marked with eerily familiar symbols.
This is clearly a set up for a series, and works just fine for that. It's also a solid stand-alone adventure. The horror elements are almost a bit much for me, but they're always horrific - the thing that inspires the good guys to push to their limits to stop - not to wallow in. Definitely checking out book 2
I was intrigued by the blending of elements in this story -- the Christian soldier, the sorceror he encounters in what would otherwise have been a more standard battle in Afghanistan... and then he comes back home on R&R and finds that the darkness he encountered has followed him there. There are a cast of demon-hunting characters and shadowy agencies, and the whole thing is interesting and well-imagined. I was pleased with the outcome. What a fun genre-bending exercise!
So this is another I borrowed on Kindle through Amazon Prime, but I enjoyed it enough that I'll buy it when payday rolls around. A hero at loose ends overcomes a threat to family, finds a mentor, and signs up to fight more evil in a secret organization. It has returned warriors, small towns, kid siblings, government agents, cryptic old people, and monsters. If that sort of thing is your bag, you're probably going to enjoy this one.
