About the author

Hans Kohn has lived where history has been made. Born in Prague in 1891, he was raised in the twilight of the Habsburg Empire, saw action in World War I, and spent five years in Russia as a prisoner of war. He came to America in 1933, after more than a decade of living in London, Paris, and Jerusalem. The next 27 years he spent as professor of history at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and at the city college of new York.

الكتاب يعد تأريخا للتحولات السياسية والاجتماعية والفكرية التي صاحبت دخول ما اصطلح عليه بالعصر الحديث: نشوء الدول القومية، التأكيد على قيمة الحرية، الانتقال الى العلم التجريبي بهدف تحقيق رفاهية البشر،
الكتاب به بعض الافكار المفيدة التي كان يحسن التعمق فيها كفكرة "القوة" وأثرها سواء بين السلطة والشعب او بين الدول وبعضها،
يعيب الكتاب تبشيره الزائد بقيم الحضارة الغربية الحديثة التي ثبت -حتى بالنسبة للكاتب- انها لا تعدو دعاية فارغة!

Useful look on the history and philosophies underpinning the spread of nationalism(s) and the shapes and forms it has taken - making the argument that the 1960s onward marks a shift into the first era of truly global interdependent history.

Really a birds-eye view of a *lot* of different historical events and periods, and provided all kinds of information for further study.

Definitely a product of its time, but offers some useful lessons to guard against national chauvinism: the idea that nationalism must be tempered with the recognition of the oneness of humanity, and with the recognition of individual liberty - both of which are too often ignored by self-described nationalists.

This is among other important points made by this book. Useful, and a rather quick read, but can’t say it’s the most riveting thing I’ve ever read.
