Elevators. Airplanes.

I always like the things in between.

"You only like things in between, Coreen. You only like the chase... You only want me chasing after you. You don't want to decide... Pero pakiusap naman, magdesisyon ka na, kasi tao rin naman ako, nasasaktan. And you? I don't think nararamdaman mo yung sakit na nararamdaman ko... You are just too heartless."

"I have you. That's enough for me. Everyone else is just collateral damage."

I really thought I would like this one, especially considering how most Filipino Wattpaders love her works. But it ended up being a huge letdown. Why? Well, to start off this review, this book is poorly written and the themes are toxic and problematic without providing solid repercussions.

Now let's move on to the details:

There's a love triangle - No elaboration needed.

Toxic and Abusive relationships - Hear me out. I stand by the saying that a book that contains problematic and toxic themes is not automatically bad. I can prove this with so many of my favorite books, from some Colleen Hoover books and other dark romances that I have read in the past. To be honest, I actually like unconventional themes in the books I read. But with this one, I have problems.

Adding "problematic" aspects to a story does not automatically make it a better or a more exciting story. It will always depend on how an author executes those themes and topics.

If you're going to write about an unhealthy relationship and a red flag male lead, at least make their reasons believable and provide consequences for their actions. Make them go through character development outside of the person they're currently being toxic with, and if not, just end their relationship, because we should not be tolerating nor promoting toxic behaviors. One story I know that succeeded in doing this is It Ends with Us.

But I find neither of those things present in the story.

Again, toxic themes are "fine" when it was "challenged" in the narrative or was portrayed as "wrong", but it felt like the toxicity here is written to be "romantic" or "excusable". It felt like she's glorifying toxic relationships - that even though you are being mentally and physically abused by the one that loves you or the one you love, you should always try to change them hoping they become a better person. But this isn't how relationships work.

Yes, people change. Yes, people can change for the better. But personal growth, especially when you're already affecting other people around you needs to be developed by yourself. The journey through self development is supposed to be done alone. That person isn't a patient that needs to be treated, and you're not a doctor obligated to fix them.

I think Jonaxx fans would counter me on this saying that this is just fiction, and why are you babbling so much about this? Well yes, this is indeed fiction, but the lessons and morals it portray as well as the readers receiving those messages aren't fictional. Real people read this, especially young readers, and if the book is romanticizing cheating and toxicity, then what do you expect those youngsters would take away from this?

If you noticed, many readers always mention how their "favorite" book changed their lives or how it impacted them to be a better person etc. because books DO impact the readers. It CHANGES and INFLUENCES the person reading it, whether it be negative or positive. So me critiquing this book is just me pointing out the negative topics that this book portrays and how some romantic choices are not handled well so future readers can see if this book is for them or not.

Girl on Girl Hate and Misogyny - Basically pitting women against each other and always placing the blame on the women and not on the men. Simplified example, you know those scenarios when the girl's boyfriend cheats on her and then she founds out later on and all she does is lash out on the side chick, pulls her hair, spit insults, and calls her names while the guy is just standing there trying to act like a referee as if he's innocent?

Every other girl the main character laid eyes on, she immediately slut-shames. Every other girl that has a crush on her love interests immediately becomes evil. In short, no other girl is good besides her. When an argument or problem arises, the male leads always win. Or if she does somewhat wins, she will put the blame back at herself because she thinks that the guys are right because they're hot. Basically, when the main character has issues, her emotions are invalid because the guys says so. Her reasons are easily dismissed and she rarely stood up for herself. And if she did, it would only be momentary and she would quickly change back to being a doormat.

Background Noise Side Characters - Almost every other character in this book has only one defining personality and that's it.

Non-Existent Platonic Relationships - It's not to say that there weren't a single friendly relationship in this, but that's the problem. We were just TOLD they were friends, but we don't really see it play out. The main character only have one friend, and they don't even act like friends most of the time. They barely hang out, barely talk, barely bond, and have almost no common interests besides being obsessed with their crushes.

And one thing I noticed here is that girls and boys can't be friends without the other falling in love with the other. Does boy-girl friendship not exist in this book? Can't a girl and a boy interact platonically without being attracted to one another?

Too Unrealistic - I get that this book is written way back then, and there are very few romance books for the author to draw inspirations from. Especially a romance that feels Filipino besides the fact that it's written in Filipino.

This is not much of a negative, but rather a thing that needs to be mentioned. The characters in here don't act like Filipinos. Most scenes and settings are not even remotely similar to our country. It's like a hodgepodge of every foreign romance stories mixed into a single book.

Everyone is Physically Perfect - Perhaps back then, it was a trend to have every character in your book to be flawless, especially the guys. But I think if this would be written today, it would receive criticisms on the character work. Characters should be imperfect or flawed in some way, because flaws create conflict, intrigue, and relatability. And I don't mean just very simple and unrecognizable imperfections like giving your character anger-issues but then making them so hot and physically perfect that it essentially covers up that one flaw anyway. It would just defeat the whole purpose. Like, what's the point of giving them that flaw if it won't be noticed?

I'm not sure what's the state of Jonaxx's books now, if she ever did improve her character work since I haven't read her recent books. But I hope there are more variety to her characters and not a repeat of her other ones, because for me, it's more interesting to read about a character that you can somewhat relate and empathize with. Having perfect male leads all the time can become redundant and boring.

Constant Emotional Cheating - I've seen some posts saying that none of Jonaxx's books have cheating on them. I can't comment about her other books since, like I've mentioned previously, I haven't read them. But for this specific book, I would have to disagree.

We all have our definition of cheating. For me, any grey area of unfaithfulness is still cheating. Even if you're not officially together with that person but you both know that you loved each other, going out with someone else is already a form of betrayal. And unfortunately, it happens in this book.

The male lead keeps on going out with plenty of other girls while he specifically admitted to be in love with the main character. It's kind of hypocritical of him to even do those things when all the time, he's begging the main character to choose him over his brother who the main character is in love with at the time. But when she rejects him, the main character would see him entertaining other girls all the time. I mean, I thought you're in love with her? Can you at least prove that you are worthy and loyal for her to even consider you? Can you at least wait for her if you actually love her? And he's pissed on why she's not choosing him? To be honest, any normal people wouldn't.

A Hypocrite Main Character - I think her name was Coreen? I've quite forgotten at this point. But I remember her being so easily obsessed with guys. She easily falls. And she will do everything to get the boy she loves. And guess what? If another girl is doing the same things she's doing, she slut-shames them. She hates girls that are similar to her. And might I add, all she does is agree with the male characters. Always gets dragged whenever she's taken. She barely makes decisions for herself. She's more of a ragged doll than a female lead.

A Douche Bag Male Lead - Rozen Elizalde, everyone's swoon worthy fictional boyfriend. Let's be honest, the reason why most people fangirl over him is because he's written to be hot and that's it. Like really, what is there to him other than his looks? Honesty? Barely. Loyalty? Not even an inch. Respectful? I don't think it even exists in his vocabulary. Caring? Perhaps he forgot about that. Imagine a guy that is not physically attractive having all his personality traits (if he even has any), would you still date the guy? No. You would find him creepy and a stalker, proving that looks is the only thing that matters nowadays.

This male lead also has anger management issues. If he doesn't get what he likes, he would punch walls and yell. He's the type that doesn't take no for an answer. Also, in addition to him being a douche, remember how I mentioned that he gets out and makes out with plenty of other girls? Well, when the roles are reversed and the main character is even slightly near other guys, he would be so pissed off and mad to the point that he would threaten his own brother and even fight with him just to claim the female lead.

Don't see the double standards yet? Then I pity you.

Immature Decisions - The characters in here are adults. But the whole chasing plotline is just so immature. Especially since it resulted to so many dramas that no real adult would've caused in the first place.

Surprise Pregnancy - Even though a lot of people hate this trope nowadays, I'm still kind of neutral about it. I neither hate it or love it. The only reason I find it icky in here is how it's being used as a "turn-on". And I don't mean just the characters being overly joyous about a baby. It's how the male lead becomes so horny just knowing and seeing the main character pregnant to having sex with her while she's almost due. Like, is that even physically possible? And is this supposed to be a weird fetish thing? Because I don't understand it.

Here's a line in the book that captures what I'm talking about:

"But I'm pregnant, Rozen."

"Exactly why I'm so turned on right now."

Overall, I don't think this book is good. The characters work is sloppy and the writing is engaging yet reads very juvenile.

I've heard there's a companion novel, but I have no intention of reading that. I will PROBABLY *crossed fingers* read her future stories since Heartless is one of her earlier works and hopefully not a definition of how she writes now. I hope her latest works are nothing like this one.

Again, this review is NOT A PERSONAL ATTACK ON THE AUTHOR. This is a book review meant to give critique and suggestions to THIS SPECIFIC STORY. If you still can't comprehend that, then perhaps you're new to the literature industry.

DNF. Review later

Proper review:

It was only a few weeks back when I learned that I have read a Jonaxx story before - Mapapansin Kaya. I remember reading it due to its popularity, however, after reading the first few chapters, I stopped. It isn`t just for me, the approach was too YA-ish for me (or mas apt yung pangteenager).
Reading Heartless felt the same. The reason why I started reading the book in the first place is because of people raving that they`d rate Rozen higher than Elijah and Logan. My take? Nope, not even in the same level (or baka naman mas okay siya sa chapters na hindi ko nabasa? Pero I skimmed the remaining chapters).
My biggest complaint about the book is Coreen. I tried to like her, or at least to rationalize her character but after reading 15 chapters, I just had to stop. Rozen may have had the potential to be memorable but I think it was hampered by having Coreen as his partner. Yes, the reason why others probably like Rozen is because of his martyrdom (lol) but I just can`t enjoy them together. Dahil na din sa pinapakita ni Coreen, medyo nakukulangan na din tuloy ako kay Rozen. I can`t help but compare kung paano kaya pag si Elijah yun (siguro, herein lies na mas well developed lang talaga si EJ).

But before you brand me as an anti-Jonaxx (I`m not, I swear), I know for a fact that she can write better stories. Her GLS is a prime example of that. Geared towards a `more` mature audience, she has delivered really well. In fact, Give in to You has become one of my favorite reads (alongside sa mga nabasa ko nang published books). If ever you`re wondering na baka lahat nung pangteenager niyang books eh similar sa Heartless and MK, the answer is NO. You need not look further than The Until Trilogy. Though GITY made my favorites list pero looking back, I realize that I love Elijah Montefalco more than Logan. Almost similar set-up lang ang Heartless and Until (age-wise) but then ibang iba yung sa Until Series. Mas iba yung story ni Elijah and Klare. Basta. I'll stop here kasi this is turning out to be my Until series review.

This book for me is wonderful. It's just that it could be a lil problematic for others. Jonaxx stories needs a very critical thinking because the idea that you grasp will only be stuck at bad or good nothing in between. Same with this book, if you have a weak mindset and easy to falter stands you'll take wrong idea.

OhEmGee! I dunno how to start without sounding so smitten with this story, for obviously, I am hehehe. I’ve been busy for the past few days so it took me a week to grab my phone and read. I’m not yet in the mood for some English stories so I decided to open my Wattpad app instead. I’m currently not into some corny and cheesy story so I decided to check on some stories from my favorite author Jonaxx, and viola! I stumbled to this story. And I am really glad I did. ^_^

I was just starting the story but oh men!, those super “kilig” scenes is already overwhelming, which sometimes lead to me covering my mouth to keep from shouting. This author never really fails to amaze me. The characters, the execution of lines and the scenes; all of them are just so perfect!

If it’s perfect, then why 4 stars eh? It’s because I hated the twist and turns of the story in the higher chapters. Hahaha, I know it’s a shallow reason. And the ending? Ow men, that’s one hell of an ending. Just forget my rating and read the story ok. And oh, before I forgot, there’s some slight SPG in this story, so beware ok? Hehe.

I don’t know what to say anymore to convince you guys, but seriously, this story is really a must read. If you’re in love, not yet in love, wants to be in love, heartbroken, and whatever you are in, this book is perfect for you. Enjoy! ^_^

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

So finally was able to reread this book. Lets just get into the review.

1. I understand Coreen, I'd also rather not get into a relationship if it's not the person I love and want but what just annoyed me is the fact if she really didn't like Rozen she wouldn't hang out with him any longer (As the book progress.)

2. I don't like how Rozen played it all but love how he loved Coreen so much.

I really don't have anything else to say so here's the shortened version of my review.

Reading Heartless made me feel heartless too because they took my heart with them. I don’t know, but I really love Heartless by Jonaxx.

There’s something about the story that pulls you in, especially the chasing part. I relate so much to that — how you can chase someone so hard, but when they finally come closer, you suddenly pull away. That’s literally me. I stay in the middle, just like Coreen. Hindi ako sure kung defense mechanism ba or takot lang talaga magmahal.

And Rozen… I don’t even know how he makes me kilig so much. There’s this charm about him na kahit alam mong may manipulative side siya, he still gets to you. I lowkey wish I had a boyfriend like him — minus the manipulation, of course 😭. Just someone who sees me the way he sees Coreen. Ganon ka-intense.

One line that hit me the most was:
“I am heartless because my heart isn’t with me, it’s with you, Rozen.”
It felt like someone punched me in the chest. That kind of love — where you give it all, even if it breaks you — is both terrifying and beautiful.

Honestly, this book made me feel seen. It messed with my emotions, but in the best way. I’ll never forget the way it made me feel.

If you don’t like this story, you can read jonaxx’s new stories on her own app and see how she has improved.

I first read it 2 years ago and this story was written 9 years ago so basically a lot of people find it cliché because it caught up with the old eras on wattpad.

Rozen Gaiser Elizalde, the male lead was a manipulative, sexy beast, asshole, with a playboy side and a lot of flaws. Can’t deny the fact that lot of readers him a red flag. He used to manipulate and play dirty because of his unconditional love for Coreen that he is willing to do everything to prove his love. He waited 14 years to Coreen love him back. If you finish the story you will see his character development.

Coreen Samantha Aquino, the female lead has a crush on Rozen’s brother, Noah. She was a die hard fan of Noah then, so he ignored Rozen who always pursued her. I noticed that she was a bit confused by her feelings. But she justified her character in the story.

I don't know what's with this book but there's something in it that makes it so comforting while reading. I finished this book in two days and I can only finish a book in a short amount of time when the book is so good.

The characters are flawed but beautifully written.

Rozen is such a red flag; possessive and manipulative, but jonaxx made it seem like he's just doing all of that because of his love for Coreen. That he can be the worst version of himself because his love for Coreen is too much for someone so heartless like him.

To be honest, at first, I didn't like Coreen's character at all. I just thought that she was so rude towards Rozen and to other people that cared for her. I also didn't like how she always pointed out Reina's (her best friend) flaws and obviously insecurities but I guess she's just like that, straightforward. But I kind of relate to her when I like someone lol but 'not that' obsessed. But seeing her character development when she started falling for Rozen is so satisfying ✨

They were beautifully written to the point that you won't mind their red flags.

This book was such a rollercoaster of emotions and I think that is why most would be really attached to this, given that there’s a lot of mixed emotions that you’d be feeling for every chapter you read. The male lead… Rozen, I don’t even know how to start with his character. He is not a healthy mix of a green flag and red flag. Yes, he does a lot of great stuff for the likeness of Coreen but, grabi! He can be a complete douchebag from time-to-time ren. Coreen is no different. I think how they both were horrible and at the same time great for one another made the readers entertained because it contained so much drama. The bonus chapter was a little too much though… I didn’t like how they depicted how their relationship acts towards others.

I first read this book when I was around 12, and maybe back then I would’ve found their relationship cute. But now that I’m 18 and rereading it, their relationship honestly feels so toxic. Both Rozen and Coreen are stressful to read — they’re both red flags. Rozen’s womanizing is such a turn-off, and Coreen’s way of thinking is overly complicated. On top of that, there’s some misogyny that I really didn’t like.

Still, I’m giving it 4 stars because both of them showed character development. And despite everything, they still ended up loving each other in the end, which was really kilig-worthy.

worth it yung stress ko sa kanilang dalawa🤣

The book cover is very aesthetic and aligns well with current international trends.

The story is enjoyable and there are scenes that makes me giddy. However, I’m having a hard time relating to the main character. It took me a while to finish because only a few parts truly hooked me. I was able to predict the reason behind another male character’s behavior, so there weren’t any major twists.

I’ve been attracting love triangle trope books (lol).

I should have just stopped reading while on the first chapter. The writing style is horrible! And the plot is very inconsistent. The only reason why I finished it was because I was trying soooo hard to understand why it got 4 stars in Goodreads and 77 million reads in Wattpad.

Honest review here.

I will try to read another story of hers. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as this one.

Fingers crossed.

If you are looking for a quality romance novel, do not go searching for Jonaxx's works first. Her stories are quite hard to grasp and love. I gave her another chance by reading Heartless and still the story never fails to disappoint me. I am getting tired of her characters because they are almost the same upon every story. The plot is messy, the conflict is trivial and shallow to the extent of wondering if it really is a conflict. All in all, don't waste your time reading this book.

Plot is there but writing style screams 2010's wattpad era which is the era Heartless was written. I read the english edition and i say, translation could have been done better. You could tell that Jonaxx was still young when she wrote this. Lines/dialogs are cringy and overly dramatic. The excessive use of the word "shit" is very very chingy as well. But anyway, Jonaxx obviously improved her writing style over the years.

DNF at 74%. (I wish I stopped sooner) Honestly, this book was a horrible let-down. Since most Filipino-readers LOVE Jonaxx, i decided to give it a go. (I’ve been trying to read more Filipino literature since my vocab is rlly bad) The romance was toxic, and it was getting redundant. The FMC? Unlovable. OA. And just…bratty, not the kind na okay lang, pero yung hindi mo talaga ma-tolerate. MMC? Flat. Toxic. “Everyone else is just collateral damage”? Beh. Ano toh, WAR??

Kinda lost interest about 75% in. Lagi na lang kase May misunderstanding/miscommunication na nagaganap. I found Rozen endearing in the beginning but then he became an ass. Still like him but not as much as I initially did.

This was an okay read for me which is too bad. I had hoped that it'll be good.

Honestly I read the book Mapapansin Kaya and I was expecting na si Coreen and Noah magkakatuluyan in case dahil yun naman kasi yun guy na hinahabolhabol nya. Then when I read this story hindi ko naexpect na meron palang bantay salakay haha. Worth the read! And I also saw the character development ng 2 bida.

Antagal ko natapos kaya baka dahil doon kaya naapektuhan review ko. Nasa dulo ang spice. Hindi ako fan ng spice talaga. Ayoko sa adik sa bembangan HAHHAHAHAH

I've read this once when I was like 13. I remember loving this book because of Rozen. Months ago, I bought a physical copy and decided to reread it. My thoughts now? It is a little problematic. Some parts are really really annoying. But I still get why my 13-year-old self loved Rozen. Though I don't love him as much anymore.
