About the author

Yochi Brandes was born in Israel in 1959 to a family of Hassidic rabbis. With degrees in both Biblical Studies and Judaic Studies, she has been a prominent and sought-after lecturer on the Bible and on Jewish cultural topics for many years.

One of Israel's bestselling writers, she is the author of seven historical novels and two non-fiction books, all centered on Jewish ideas, history, and culture. She has been awarded the Book Publishers Association's Platinum Book Prize for all her novels, including The Secret Book of Kings.

The Secret Book of Kings is her first novel to appear in English translation.

אני מאוד אוהבת את הכתיבה של יוכי ברנדס, ואת המחשבה הפתוחה שלה שלוקחת טקסטים יהודים מוכרים למקומות פחות מקובלים. אבל הספר הזה איכזב אותי. הספר מאגד טורי דיעה (שרק בסופו התברר לי שפורסמו בעיתון ישראל היום), שמביעים ביקורת על החברה הדתית ובעיקר החרדית-אשכנזית. הביקורת ידועה ומוכרת, ובשלב מסויים כבר יכולתי לנחש לבד את השורה התחתונה בכל טור שקראתי. כלומר, הביקורת חזרה על עצמה יותר מדי פעמים. הטורים עצמם לא חידשו דבר, במיוחד לאנשים שמכירים את כל הטקסטים האלה, ויודעים היטב איך פוסקי ההלכה העכשוויים מתעקשים להתעלם מהם ומכל חידוש הלכתי.
בקיצור, הספר לא חידש לי כלום, חזר על עצמו ולא נתן שום עומק או ערך מוסף.
אני מבינה שזה האופי של טורי דיעה בעיתון, אבל אם את כבר מאגדת אותם לספר, תרחיבי קצת ותוסיפי משהו קצת יותר עמוק. אה, וגם תורידי חלק מהאיזכורים האקטואליים, מכיוון שאלה ממש לא התיישנו היטב.
מעבר לביקורת הזאת, הכתיבה של ברנדס זורמת, קלה ומצויינת כמו תמיד.

ספר מרתק. יוכי ברנדס מביעה דעות נוקבות המבוססות על קריאה לא שגרתית במקורות. גם אם אני לא תמיד חושבת כמוה, ההתבוננות שלה במציאות הישראלית, במיוחד בהקשר של יהדות וממסד, מעניינת מאוד וחדשנית בעיניי.

Yochi is so insightful and the ideas presented in the book are thought-provoking and interesting. I wished the writer would go deeper into many of the topics that felt a bit too shallow, as if they were often ideas being raised, but not silly explored.

One of the best books I've read this year. The themes are interesting and topical, the chapters are short and concise, and the author's perspective on certain matters are quite enthralling and original. One may not necessarily agree with every opinion stated in this book, but should have an easy time relating to many of the concepts and ideas its author brings out.

Overall, the book was easy to read.
