i am not big on zombie movies or books. i really try to avoid them. but as soon as i read the back of the book i was curious. a living person also a zombie. it was so interesting. grace discovering and realizing that there was actually something wrong with her. this book was actually all about that. her finding out that she is zombie and circumstances that resulted to her being what she is. i really liked the fact that she was shown as a normal teenager worrying about her looks, her crush etc. most of the book was just shown as her leading normal life. except for the cat and other things that made her realize that there was actually something wrong with her. there is not much zombie action going on apart from certain goriness which were like few situations in the book. i liked how romance was done in this book. a guy who would actually stand by her side and protect her. even after knowing what she was. in all this was such a good and short read.
*I received a digital copy of this book for the blog tour hosted by YA Bound Book Tour in exchange for an honest review.*
This book was definitely intriguing. But some parts were gross, like flesh eating gross. But as a zombie book, it was pretty well done!
Grace is just like another teenage girl but her appetite is growing everyday which is turning out to be way beyond her control. She realises something is extremely wrong with her as one day she eats a cat out of sheer hunger. And then a horrific chain of events begin. Only one man has the answers to all her questions and he might be able to able to help her. But whatever he is saying, is it even true? Or is Grace falling into more danger than she already was?
This book was zombishly good! Honestly, I don't think I have ever read a zombie book before so this was definitely a different experience. Grace's hunger is increasing day by day and she can't control it anymore. She kills a living cat and eats it which is basically ew but nonetheless she is horrified. But after that a few more incidents happen before she understands the full depth of her situation. The narrative is pretty interesting from start which kept me glued to book. Although the first portion of this book was a bit slow but the pace picked up soon enough.
Grace was a pretty interesting yet normal character, I liked her from the start. Tristen was a nice character but I don't know, he was perhaps a bit too nice, I mean if I eat someone I think the other person will probably run in the other direction rather than saving my life! But he stayed through. I do have another theory about him but I'm not gonna say anything as it might spoil a little bit of the story. Dr. Robinson, whom Graces's mom trusted so much seemed fishy to me as well. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book as the ending of this book was an interesting one which left me wanting for more.
Overall, Turning Grace was a good read. The plot was interesting from the beginning and the characters were good enough. The writing was pretty smooth. I hope I'm able to read the next book soon enough as I can't wait to know what happens next!
Ummm wow!!! I'm so glad I stumbled upon this book. This has to be one best, Top 5 Zombie books I've ever read.
The story follows Grace a teenager. Just like any teenager, she's in high school, she has her BFF, and her secret crush. Some things that would be odd is that she eats a TON of food. More like a buffet. Her mom tells her that it's just her growing up and needing to eat more.
Slowly things start happening that make her question what is really going on. But she also has the attention of her Crush! Tristen Miles.
"No, seriously. If you are a zombie, I'm a zombie. It would happen anyway if it were real right?"
He has no idea how real this maybe. Grace becomes hungrier and hungrier. Which makes her do things, she would not normally do.
I loved the direction the author took with this story. It was really interesting and I didn't stop reading. I finished it really fast. I'm gonna have to read the second book, Escaping Grace. Super excited!...Lissa
A zombie book that follows a teen injected with a untested serum as a child and the deterioration of her body and mind ever since.
It's unusual to find a zombie book that doesn't have an 'outbreak' or a virus that can be passed on through a bite. It was interesting to see the methods Davis thought up for Grace's mother to use in order to maintain her daughter's ignorance to what she truly was, and the repercussions of not explaining the situation to Grace when things start going severely south.
Some niggles I had were Grace's naivety and Tristan's utter acceptance. Insta-love is a well used trope in some YA stories, and maybe teens will find this book and the relationship dynamics more believable.
(I received this book free from the Author in exchange for my honest review)
I don't normally read zombie books, but this one caught my interest by it's cover, excerpts and it's reviews. There were a few that spoke of this big twist, and how it was out of left field. I love plot twist and getting blindsided by a book. My interest was piked and once that happens there's nothing that can stop me.
As I drove into this book, the prolog was heartwreching and mysterious. We are taken to a hospital where a sick girl is being treated, a hysterical mother trying to do what she can. This was a powerful chapter and one that had me hooked. Especially as to how the dear mothers loses her finger. To say I wasn't shocked would be a understatement. I cringed when she finally realized what had happened.
Moving on from that dark opening, the book jumps to present time with Grace. Here is where I found the story took a big of a nose dive and why I can't give it the 5 star. The story slows down, I mean almost to a snails pace. I get that the author wanted to drag Graces "turning" out, but hell it was painful there for a bit. Not only does the plot slow down, the story was overshadowed with teenage puppy love (can't call it insta-love because she's been crushing on this guy for years). I love a little romance in my stories, but I don't like it when these characters suddenly become so in love after like a few real meetings, that's it like they're soul mats and nothing can come between them. It's unrealistic, and paints a very negative picture on how love should be.
Not only that, he had a girlfriend and proceeded to crash another girl. Not cool, if you want out, get out before you start chasing other skirts. There is also a screen at the end, that wasn't cool and uncalled for, showing me that Terry isn't the perfect boy next door but a complete dick. Grace you can do better. So much better.
As for Grace, I don't know if I like her, or just annoyed with her. She bitched a lot, and wasn't strong. She never stood up for herself, and she spent way to much time obsessing over how perfect Sonny was. Now Sonny, I don't know what it was about the little psychopath, but I liked her. Not only that, I felt sorry for her, because no matter how you look at if, she was trying to keep her man. If some girl was trying to steel my man, I go a little crazy as well.
The ending is what made this story for me, and got it into the 4 star slot. I was not expecting that outcome. I sat there, I even yelled out to my roommate telling her what happened, she gave me this WTF are you serious look. Graces reaction, sitting there in complete shock and disarray, covered in blood and other unmentionables, pulled at the heart strings but made me grin as well. I don't think I have ever read a ending like it. It was fresh, and risky. In truth, I would have been more please if, say all that blood had belonged to someone else, because holy hell, now that would have been quite the ending.
I highly recommend this book, it's a short read, with some cringe worthy moments. Sure it has a slow pace, but that ending, if anything read this book for the ending. You won't be able to look at Grace the same way again.
This book was a great read. It was clean of profanity and descriptive sex. The main character was likable for the most part.
Grace is a young girl in high school. She only eats food her mom prepares for her. But she's going through some changes and begins to discover her appetite is changing to something a bit dark. The boy she is attracted to shares an interest in her and supports her as she goes through these changes.
I love a good zombie story. This isn’t a zombie apocalypse. It’s the story of one teenage girl, struggling with odd cravings and an escalating urge to commit violence.
I found some scenes disturbing on so many levels. And I loved it. I know, I’m twisted. But what’s a good zombie story without some truly ghastly scenes. Like when she eats the neighbor’s cat. Yuck.
I liked Grace. Felt sorry for her. And she scared the bejesus out of me. This made me wonder if I’d stand by her, best friend or not.
There’s a sweet romance beginning, but it doesn’t take over the whole story. It does add an important character to the mix and some lighter moments in between the gnashing and blood.
I was into this book from the opening to the finish. While there is an ending, there’s more to come. And I plan to see where this series goes.
A good one for zombie fans who want a more personal story, not an apocalypse.
Turning Grace is an amazing novel! I couldn't put it down once I started it. I wanted to know more and more about Grace. From the beginning it's clear Grace is a very special girl. Her Moms constant home cooking, and her giant meals stuck out to me. As the story progresses, and we get to know Graces Mom, Phoebe, and Tristen more, it becomes obvious Grace isn't normal in the food consumption department. I don't want to spoil the ending but I did not see that coming! Something else along the same lines, maybe, but not the actual explanation. Tristan's devotion to Grace is heart warming. They went through a lot together in such a small amount of time. I am so happy I won this book as part of a Good Reads giveaway. J.Q. Davis is an awesome writer. Turning Grace sucked me in after just a few pages. I cannot wait to read more about Grace in the future!
It took me several tries of starting and giving up before I finally managed to make it through this book. It just didn't live up to the quality and standards when compared to other books on the shelves that I could have chosen to read instead. It kind of came across as a book someone wrote for NaNoWriMo as quickly as possible without bothering to editing for content, smoothness, or interest factor, and the characters were annoying at best, especially the main character who came across as super naive and immature but at one point in the story actually declared that she was mature for her age. The only redeeming factor was that the story was told from the perspective of the zombie, so that was a nice change... if only I had liked anything else at all about the characters or the plot, that would have been way better.
You really cannot pass this macabre book up. This book introduces us to a different take on zombies. Meet Grace, a typical teenage girl going through the usual growing pains and a huge appetite. She begins to notice changes that aren't so typical. Sorry, I don't do spoilers!!! Strong story line with well developed characters. Shocking revelations that floor you and scenes that turn your stomach. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Turning Grace is the first zombie novel I have ever read, and I’ll be honest, J.Q. Davis has turned me into a fan! To go along with the gnarly, page-turning scenes, perhaps the strongest emotional pull of the novel is the way that J.Q. dives into the teenage mind and demonstrates the inner turmoil that adolescents can face when they aren’t satisfied with who they are as individuals. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who wants an entertaining read (and has the stomach for it!).
17 year old Grace is hungry all of the time, but her mother who is a doctor brushes it off as a regular hormonal issue all teenagers encounter. Grace tries to do regular teen things, like hang out with her best friend, avoid her nemesis who happens to date Grace's crush Tristan, and day dream over Tristan. But the hunger becomes worse, causing Grace to pass out and feel sick. But what is worse, is the things that the hunger causes her to do. The unspeakable things...
I love myself some zombie movies, tv shows, books, actually pretty much anything zombie related so I was intrigued to get my hands on this book. The synopsis hinted at hunger so I assumed zombie and it is listed as horror and I do also love myself some scary stories to keep me freaked out while reading. Well, maybe my expectations were too high because I was a little let down by the book. I found the writing to be a off for my taste for the first 3/4th of the book. I think because it was more of a "tell me" than a "show me" writing style. For example, she would say that some one was pretty or hot but I never really got to see what they looked like, more I just had to take her word for it. The descriptions did increase substantially as the horrific events occurred, which was when my interest was fully peaked.
I really appreciated how there was an actual reason as for why Grace was the way she was. In a world filled with zombies and no explanation given, I loved the fact the author explained the what and the why. Despite my lack of engagement for most of the book, the parts that drew me in were interesting, gory, horrifying and crazy intense and it was enough to hook me. I look forward to the next book in the series where I hope more answers are divulged. I will admit that I now think of Costa Rica in a new light.
As a side note, I have my speculation on Tristan. He at times seemed to have control over his evil girlfriend, so I was expecting some sort of supernatural reveal that did not happen. Add in the fact that he was perfectly fine with everything Grace threw at him also causes me to question things. I mean really, he barley knows her and she confides in him, he eats people due to her, and he takes part in terrible deeds for her and never bats an eye. That takes a special kind of person or someone hiding something himself (which is where I put my money). If my husband admitted these things to me, we would have to have a serious talk and make some boundaries, to say the least and this is a person I have known for years.
Overall, I was a little let down by the book, but it grabbed my attention enough to make me want more. I will pick up the next book to see what will happen next.
Grace is your typical teenager who wants the same things as every other teenager to be popular and have a boyfriend well maybe not exactly. Well she definitely doesn’t want to be popular but she would like it if she were not on some people’s radar all the time. Like that was their life’s only objective was to pick on Grace. She walks the halls of school trying to be invisible hoping no one will notice her but that hardly ever happens.
Oh and she wants a boyfriend alright and she knows exactly who and that is the hot, popular jock Tristen Miles but there is just one problem and that is Tristen just happens to be with the popular girl and the one person that Grace is always trying to avoid. But this is only a minor thing for Grace. She wants Tristen and is determined to have him. She is a woman with a plan and that plan comes into effect after Tristen ask her to tutor him and she mentions her plans with her best friend Phoebe to go haunted house hoping on Halloween. Halloween is Grace and Phoebe’s favorite holiday.
Something is wrong with Grace she doesn’t know what it is and her mother is not talking. Grace is always hungry and can eat you out of house and home as they say. Grace’s mother is a nurse but Grace thinks she missed her calling and should have been a chef. Her mother always makes sure that Grace has food to eat. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and always plenty of snacks. Grace has been doing great with dealing with her hunger all these years but something is changing within Grace is starting to get hungry sooner and it takes more to fill her up.
Her body is also going through some changes as well. Grace knows something is wrong with her and is determined to find out what it is and her mother is going to talk. She makes this decision after something goes terribly wrong on Halloween night. Grace does something she never thought she was capable of doing. Now her life is changed forever and she has lost something very close and dear to heart. She has hurt someone that she never wanted to hurt. Grace has become something that she never wanted to be.
Can she get the help that she needs to make her better? Will she find the answers she needs? Will she ever be able to live a normal life? What is a normal life for Grace? Will her plans work out for getting the most popular guy in school? Pick up your copy today to find out. You won’t regret it.
Turning Grace is unlike anything I have read before. I love the world that the author created for Grace and all the changes that was going on in her body and the way Grace dealt with them. I liked the way Grace just dealt with life itself. I can’t wait to see what roads Grace takes us on next. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in The Turning Series.
My husband recommended this book to me and since he doesn't normally do that I thought I should read the book. Turning Grace is a début Young Adult\Teen Novel by J.Q. Davis. The book is written from the prospective of Grace your typical teenage girl. (Boys, Clothes, school and life) The difference between Grace and other girls is Grace is a Zombie. J.Q. Davis takes a tried and overused genre and creates a new twist bring life to a almost dead genre.
Possible Spoiler. The first chapter of the book pulled me in quickly with a missing finger and a little girl but soon I found the book to have it typical teen drama that I try avoid when it comes to YA grene. I found myself struggleing to read the book because I am not the focal age group but around half way though the story the teen drama turned and the story picked up again pulling me back in. Grace likes a boy the boy has a girlfriend and the girlfriend hates Grace. Mom and Daughter have issues only because mom is keeping secrets. Grace soon finds she is in love with Boy and the boy is in love with the Grace and will do anything to protect her. Yup teen drama however when you mix in the fact that Grace is a Zombie and she has to be constantly eating the story because more interesting until I find the myself at the end of the book which has a cliff hanger. I'm not a fan of this particular cliff hanger because I feel it left the story incomplete. Grace does some horrible things to satisfy her need to eat and the author creates a kind of foreshadowing with Tristan ie boy the love interest and why she doesn't ever eat him.
As a Zombie book Genre I enjoyed the new twist I hadn't read before as a YA\Teen Romance I had a more difficult time because the romance was slightly unbelievable. J.Q. Davis has this book set up as a series with her cliff hanger which I mention left me a bit sour. Again I am not the target age group for this book so what a teen might enjoy reading I disliked.
Seeing the cover of this book , it drew me in and captivated me - I just knew that I would want to pick up the book and start reading it and I loved it. However, in parts I was a little confused and had to re-read the sentence or two just to make sure I was reading correctly. Turning Grace starts off with little Grace at five years old coming home from the hospital and she has been sick. Apparently she is all cured now. Then next thing we know her mother has woken up and her finger is missing. It's at this point we know something strange is happening with Grace. Next thing we know she is seventeen and living with her mother. There is no mention of the incident or her father , this was one of the points I had to go back and re-read to make sure I hadn't missed anything as I was like - what just happened here ? The other thing I was thinking was what happened to the rest of Grace's family as I thought she had a older sister Lucy - turns out that Lucy was actually her pet puppy. We learn that for the past 10+ years her mum changed her name and moved away, hiding Grace from the truth of what was really wrong with her. Feeding her and making sure she takes the correct nutrients. Now that Grace is seventeen her appetite is increasing and if she doesn't get food fast she deteriorates at a quicker pace until she gets the food in. When things start to spiral out of control , how long can Grace keep it under wraps and from her mother before bad things start occurring ? What will happen when Grace learns the truth of who she really is and why she is the way she is ? Can Veronica get Grace the help she needs to manage her condition before anymore get hurt and people start asking questions ?
Find out in this fast-paced read that kept me captivated from the very first biting incident. If you love Horror and the Supernatural , then you will love Turning Grace by JQ Davis. I now can't wait to read the next few books in the series.
“Turning Grace” was a story that confused me. It was brought up in conversation while speaking to the author. When told that it wasn’t a zombie or vampire story as I would have expected, I became highly curious and decided to read for myself. I had to know.
It was an interesting story. The characters were easy to identify with. It felt like I was really reading from a teenage mindset. It took me some time to get used to that, but it became rather charming and really necessary to really understand Grace’s character and thought process. After all, she’s a teenager and unsure of what’s going on with her body. A more adult or omniscient technique would have messed up that frustration in me as a reader. Yes, it was frustrating, but in a way that proved how invested I was. I didn’t want to think logically, since Grace is not necessarily logical. She’s a kid, and it really helped to be put into that limited scope. It didn’t play out in a step by step way and while I picked up on patterns that would occur in the story, it was still unpredictable enough to keep me wondering what Grace would do next, or what answers she’d find or IF she’d ever get those answers.
It’s a little frustrating that the story ended the way it did, but that’s not a bad thing either. It certainly makes me eager to read the sequel “Escaping Grace” because now I REALLY need to know what happens to this girl and what she’s going through.
It was a pleasant read and it felt like a nice mix of styles for a grown and teenage reader with its teenage level of thinking and presentation, but a dark topic and curiosity. It’s a very interesting story and I’m glad I took the time to read it. It’s a nice mix of some familiar concepts and a very refreshing look at a fresh concept that makes this story stand out from others.
The cover is amazing and it shows both sides of Grace…
Grace has an unusual appetite…She’s always Hungry, HUNgry, HUNGRY! I think she would be a definite winner of Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest. She loves horror movies and is becoming a star in a horror story of her very own. She believes in murdering masked men and serial killers, but zombies? Everyone knows they aren’t real. Maybe that’s why she doesn’t she see it coming? I guess, even if I was voraciously hungry and my body miraculously healed some pretty horrendous wounds, I would have a hard time believing I was a zombie too. She lives a normal life, otherwise, the usual school days and hanging with friends.
Things get continually worse for her…at 36%…in the bathroom…I cringed and felt like upchucking. My reaction was like fingernails on a chalkboard. Even my teeth hurt as I scrunched into myself.
Grace and her best friend, Phoebe, are planning a double date on Halloween. I wouldn’t mind having Phoebe for a friend myself. What do you think their costume will be? Correctamundo…ZOMBIES. I don’t think it will go well.
There is a YA triangle, but this one is different than the usual and worked just fine for me.
Tristen loves Grace and will do anything for her…or will he once he knows the facts?
If you want gross, Turning Grace by J Q Davis is a MUST READ. Horror, plenty of that. Suspense, yep. With every putrid breath she breathes, I wonder what will happen next.
I received a copy of Turning Grace by J Q Davis in return for an honest review.
When I began reading this book, I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did! When I’m able to connect with a character or characters, it makes me enjoy a book so much more when I’m able to relate somehow. With Grace, I’ve experienced everything she has— school wise and boys, that’s it! Nothing more exciting than that, haha!
I could kind of tell that Gracie was a zombie. An abnormal zombie, at that. Especially when she kept waking up looking like one. The scene where she picks the skin on her lip and it just keeps tearing— blah! I cringed so much while reading because I couldn’t imagine seeing or feeling that! Next, the scene where her man-crush, Tristan, comes over for a study session and Grace offers him her “pomegranate juice” her mom specially made. Then, her mom “accidentally” knocks it out of her hand because later we find out it’s actually human blood— WHAT? I LOVED the Halloween night with Sonny and all the drama and excitement. My anxiety was through the roof for all of the characters but mainly Grace, of course. It was so suspenseful! And the ending was obviously a cliff-hanger which I always hate but I’m excited to read the rest of the series!
I’m glad I liked this book as much as I did! Hopefully I can get my hands on the other books soon.

I love zombie books, and I love how this isn’t one of your run-of-the-mill zombie stories where you’ve got the usual brain-eating undead swarming an apocalyptic world. Instead, you get Grace, a funny, sometimes quirky teenager, who is constantly hungry but also trying to deal with a bully at school as well as get the attention of her crush, Tristen. It’s bad enough that her crush is in a relationship with her bully, but things get worse when Grace, in a hunger-induced trance, unwittingly eats a neighborhood cat named Fluffy. Now she needs answers from her mom, a former doctor, who’s been controlling almost every aspect of Grace’s life, especially her dietary needs. But her mom is tight-lipped, until things begin to go horribly, horribly wrong. 🧟♀️🧟♀️🧟♀️ I enjoyed this book; it doesn’t pull any punches. If you like books about zombies, I recommend that you give this a go.
n generally find something to like in absolutely every book I have ever read, Howe errors I found this Grace horribly disgusting. I found the initial description of the book revealed little of the actual genre of the book.
In general I can always find something to enjoy in every book I have ever read. However, I can honestly say I found this Grace story horribly disgusting, verging on psychotic. The initial description of this novel revealed little of the actual genre, and I was horribly disappointed. I did not even want to continue reading the whole book, yet I persevered to adequately review the book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review 3.5/5
This book is scarily real. Like what if it's real?????? Like what if??????? It's not supernatural. This is pure sci-fi. And it's scary.
Let's get this clear, I didn't love this book. Hell, I don't think I reallllyy liked it. I am just scared of this book. And I am left hanging in the air. I need answers. I need the next book.
This is THE PERFECT book to read before Halloween!!! The end of the first chapter comes right out and surprises you! I actually gasped🤣 I’m not usually a zombie-type person. I don’t really enjoy anything too gory and luckily, the majority of this book keeps the gore at bay. There are a few parts that I had to read over fairly quickly but were necessary to the plot of the story. I fell in love with Grace and her best friend Phoebe and I loved her long time crush Tristan too! However, there is a little bit of heartbreak that left me asking “why?!?!??? at the end... now I can’t wait to read book two when it comes out!!
A really enjoyable page turner! The author crafts a wonderful coming of age story for a teenage zombie-like girl. A well written book, great dialog, and situations that anyone who ever went to high school can easily relate to. I would definitely recommend this book for all young adult readers. A fun read! Looking forward to the next one!!
I found Turning Grace to be a very entertaining read. The characters were real, with real problems, mixed with some extraordinary issues. There were some surprising, and gruesome, twists that made me want to keep turning the pages. It is apparent to me that J.Q. Davis is somewhat twisted, but in a good way. I am definitely a fan and cannot wait until the next book!
This book had a great story line but the writing was a little slow in the beginning. I loved the idea!! The main character was sweet and innocent but the only person I didn’t understand was the boy character tristian. He went from barely liking her to killing someone in a second? That’s the only problem I had overall I enjoyed reading this!

I wanted to like this book but the main character Grace made it hard for me to like the book. Even though she does wonder why sometimes are happening to her ,she never investigates further and I just didn't like her attitude going after a guy that already has a girlfriend.
