About the author

Thomas Ligotti is a contemporary American horror author and reclusive literary cult figure. His writings, while unique in style, have been noted as major continuations of several literary genres—most prominently Lovecraftian horror—and have overall been described as works of "philosophical horror", often written as philosophical novels with a "darker" undertone which is similar to gothic fiction. The Washington Post called him "the best kept secret in contemporary horror fiction"; another critic declared "It's a skilled writer indeed who can suggest a horror so shocking that one is grateful it was kept offstage."

এডগার অ্যালান পো-এর যদি কোনো যোগ্য উত্তরসূরী থেকে থাকে, তিনি হলেন টমাস লিগোটি।

পো-এর মতো লিগোটির মানসিক অবস্থা নিয়েও প্রচুর জল্পনা-কল্পনা আছে। তার অ্যাগোরাফোবিয়া আছে, তীব্র অ্যাংজাইটি আছে, বাইপোলার ডিসর্ডার আছে। এসব কারণে তিনি নিভৃতচারী। মানুষের সাথে কথা বলতে সমস্যা হয়। ইন্টারভিউ দিতে পছন্দ করেন না। তার ওপর তিনি বড়ো প্রকাশনীর তুলনায় ছোটো, স্বাধীন প্রকাশনীগুলোর সাথে কাজ করতে ভালোবাসেন। তার লেখা কিছু বইয়ের এক হাজারের বেশি কপি ছাপানো হয়নি।

এ সবকিছু মিলিয়ে পাঠকদের কাছে তিনি রহস্যময় চরিত্র। তবে লেখককে ঘিরে যতোই কৌতূহল থাকুক, লেখা যদি শক্তিশালী না হয় তাহলে গুজবের প্রতি আগ্রহ বেশিদিন টেকে না। সৌভাগ্যবশতঃ লিগোটির গল্পগুলো অসাধারণ। খুব সম্ভবত জীবিত কসমিক হরর লেখকদের (অন্তত যারা নিজেদের হরর লেখক বলে স্বীকার করে) মধ্যে তিনিই সেরা।

লিগোটির গল্প পড়তে বসলেই পো-এর সাথে আরেকটা মিল লক্ষ করা যায়। দ্য মাস্ক অফ রেড ডেথ গল্পে পো যেমন বারোক ভাষা ব্যবহার করেছিলেন, যে ভাষা গির্জার কাচে আঁকা ছবির মতো জ্বলজ্বলে কিন্তু গম্ভীর, সেই ভাষার ছাপ দেখা যায় লিগোটির প্রায় সব লেখায়। দুঃস্বপ্নে অপরিচিতির একটা পরিচিত অনুভূতি আছে। মনে হয় আমরা যে জায়গায় আছি, সেখানে আগেও এসেছি, কিন্তু জায়গাটা এখন বদলে গেছে। সবগুলো জানালা, সবগুলো চেহারার আড়ালে অন্য কী যেন লুকিয়ে আছে। যে মাটির ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে আছি, সেটা সৈকতের বালুর মতো ক্রমাগত পায়ের নিচ থেকে সরে যাচ্ছে। যেন আমাদের পুরো জগতকে মুখোশ হিসেবে পরে আছে কোনো অতিকায়, অসম্ভব দানব। পো এবং লিগোটি, দুজনের লেখাতেই এই অনুভূতিটা পাওয়া যায়।

আমার প্রিয় লিগোটি গল্পগুলোর মধ্যে আছে ‘মাই ওয়ার্ক ইজ নট ইয়েট ডান,’ যেটাকে হরর গল্প হিসেবেও পড়া যায়, পুঁজিবাদের স্যাটায়ার হিসেবেও পড়া যায়। ‘দ্য অর্ডার অফ ইল্যুশন’, ‘দ্য সালাল’, ‘দ্য লাস্ট ফিস্ট অফ হার্লেকুইন’ এগুলোও দারুণ, গা-ছমছমে গল্প। লিগোটি লাভক্র্যাফটের ভক্ত, ‘দ্য লাস্ট ফিস্ট অফ হার্লেকুইন’ গল্পটা লাভক্র্যাফটকে উৎসর্গ করা হয়েছে।

লিগোটি সাহিত্যিক হবার পাশাপাশি একজন দার্শনিক এবং কবি হিসেবেও লিখেছেন। দর্শন নিয়ে তার কুখ্যাত বইয়ের নাম হচ্ছে ‘দ্য কন্সপিরেসি এগেইন্সট দ্য হিউম্যান রেস।’ এ বইয়ে তিনি মানবজাতির কেন বিলীন হয়ে যাওয়া উচিৎ, কেন আর বংশবিস্তার করা উচিৎ নয়, সে বিষয়ে যুক্তি দিয়েছেন। যদিও যুক্তিগুলোর সাথে আমি একমত নই, তাও বইটা পড়ে ভালোই লেগেছিলো। বিখ্যাত সাইকোলজিকাল হরর শো ‘ট্রু ডিটেকটিভ’ এই বইটা থেকে ভীষণভাবে অনুপ্রাণিত।

হররকে যারা সাহিত্য মনে করে না, তাদের পড়ার জন্য লেখকের তালিকা তৈরি করলে লিগোটি প্রথম তিনের মধ্যে থাকবেন।

If you like Thomas Ligotti enough to read everything he has ever written, from short stories to a novella, excerpts of nonfiction, literary analyses, and a collection of interviews, this book is for you. If that doesn't sound absolutely ideal to you, stay the hell away from this one. Thomas Ligotti's dense, poetic and somewhat self-indulgent prose, with its nihilism and cosmic horror, is not for everyone, and certainly not for most people. But devotees will find all of Ligotti's works here (other than the expanded full-length version of "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race" and his late-revival story duology "The Spectral Link"). There is horror, tragedy, surrealism, bleak humor, and even the oddest of oddities: a spec script for "The X-Files" so dark and uncanny it would have been better suited for "Twin Peaks: The Return."

I enjoyed finding some stories that I had missed that were only published in magazines but since I've read most of his other compilations like "Grimscribe" a lot of these stories were ones I've already read but it was nice to re-read my favourites.

A weighty tome.

This is an author I occasionally see in Cthulhu Mythos anthologies. Weird fiction/Cosmic Horror.

There are a few really good stories here, but many others that are just kind of OK.

The world view embodied in these stories is bleakly pessimistic. There are no happy endings (well, for what you might call the normal meaning of "happy"). When there is humor, it is of the ironic, gallows variety.

I was reminded of Franz Kafka at times.

How well I knew such surroundings, those deep interiors of dream where everything is saturated with unreality and more or less dissolves under a direct gaze. I could tell how neatly this particular interior was arranged—pictures perfectly straight and tight against the walls, well-dusted figurines arranged along open shelves, lace-fringed tablecovers set precisely in place, and delicate silk flowers in slim vases of colored glass. Yet there was something so fragile about the balance of these things, as if they were all susceptible to sudden derangement should there be some upset, no matter how subtle, in the secret system which held them together

Читаю Ліґотті!
Сергію, знаю, що ти мені давно його рекомендував, як і Дансейні (автор, котрий перевершив для мене Толкіна) і Піка (загалом найкраще фентезі, котре я читав у житті).
Враження: це без перебільшення найкращий горрор з того, що мені доводилося читати, змагатися може хіба Лавкрафтіаський "Сновидний цикл".
Світи Томаса Ліґотті це безкінечні борхесівсько-кафкіанські міста населені маріонетками, його герої - шукачі забороненого гнозису, відвідувачі закинутих окультних бібліотек, поети, візіонери, лікарі.
Благо Ліґотті - можливість Небуття, життя в смерті, в оболонці ляльки, котра повністю втілює безглуздість існування.
Улюблне оповідання - "Vastarien". Про чоловіка, котрий шукає Інше Місто, чимось за атмосферою схоже на "Сновидні пошуки недовідомого Кадату" Лавкрафта, але з моторошною кінцівкою. Також сподобалась думка про те, що існують книги, котрі не розповідають про речі, а самі і є речами, предметами пошуку і сенсу, а не провідниками до них.
Це дуже дивний збіг обставин, адже саме в "Тетраморфеусі", серцевина світу і сама його квітесенція це книга-лабіринт котра через свою красу, сенси, та барокові множинні форми дивує і приводить до божевілля кожного читача-мандрівника.

For there are certain places that exist on the wayside of the real: a house, a street, even entire towns which have claims upon them by virtue of some nameless affinity with the most remote orders of being. They are, these places, fertile ground for the unreal and retain the minimum of immunity against exotic disorders and aberrations. Their concessions to a given fashion of reality are only placating gestures, a way of stifling it through limited acceptance.

Not a good stylist. I mean by that is that his writing kind of sucks. But there are interesting and disturbing concepts in his stories that makes it worth to go to sometimes. At the very least better than Lovecraft who thought that giant octopuses will scare us to shreds. One can only open one's eyes and see what's around us to see what is truly horrifying and it's people, not scary monsters.
