After a few pages, I feared it was a Hunger Games clone : apocalyptic world; poor districts ruled by a Capitol; forbidden to hunt in the woods, archer …I’m sure you get me. But soon enough it became totally different with its own world, characters and uniqueness.

It’s the year 3035, corporations rule the world and the majority is oppressed. Everything is merchandised, the earth, the air, the water, the woods…
Ellie is the beautiful Governor Callum’s daughter. She lives in a privileged world were appearances are of the utmost importance to ascertain its position and power. She is engaged to Edmund, her father future heir.

Whereas Ellie comes from money, Jared is from the poorest parts of district 8. At 27 and with his father taken away, he has to provide for his family. Governor Callum helped with in the arrest of his father and Jared’s hate for the Callums runs deep in his heart. He is bitter, dead set against the Corporations and its iron fist. Every day undernourished children die under his eyes. There is nothing bad with rules if they’re meant to help you. Their rules though, are made to enslave us.

When he meets Ellie, he is instantly drawn to her even knowing she is the enemy. They fight hard but they can’t forget each other. Jared is obsessed with her : The instant she had touched him, his soul had recognized her as being a part of him. And now he felt like an invalid, clinging to life, desperate to live because she had become as vital to him as air.
And Ellie does not fare better as she thinks constantly about their encounter : She blushed a the mere thought of how she had longed for him to wantonly possess her.

But Ellie and Jared come from two different worlds. She is unattainable to him and engaged to another. Jared despair grows even more when he discovers he is a chimera. How could she accept a freak? He is desperate and has a hard time coming to term with his new identity. I live scared each day that I will slowly grow into an animal. That I will forget what it is like to be a man.

Even when Jared will accept to become the rebellion’s secret weapon, The Winged Archer, he’ll still struggle with the role he has to play as he would have to put aside his love for Ellie. He did not see how she could love a beast but he still nurtured the secret hope they could end together somehow.
He understood the importance of freedom…But he was no martyr. He had not chosen his fate. In fact, he was doing his damnedest to live to his best. Why should he have to be so sacrificial? To surrender the one thing he has begun to love.

I won’t go any further in the plot, you’ll have to discover by yourself if they’ll be together, if the rebellion will grow,…

I liked the idea of a chimera in a book, it’s a nice change from the vampires, shapeshifters and angels I usually read about.
I also did enjoy Ellie’s determination. Hesitant at first, she’ll emerge like a chrysalis to unfurl her own wings, take risks and make a difference. She’ll fight for a better world too because :Fairness is not an attitude you carry proudly. It’s a skill that’s meant to be executed and exercised in order for it to manifest.

This book is original, interesting with a balance between the power struggle and the romance. But…the end left me hanging! Will there be a second book?

First I'd like to say I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

This was a great book! When I started it I wasn't sure how it was going to be. I immediately liked Jared and his dog wolf. It was quite something to read what was happening in the year 3035. Honestly I wouldn't be at all surprised if what was described as The corporation and government controlling everything did actually happen a few hundred years down the road.

I really liked how Jared found out what his abilities were and became the Archer. How cool is that?! I also liked toward the end how Ellie finally got the courage to break it off with Edmund. I was really hoping Jared would have come in to kill hi m after he hit Ellie.

As for Ellie's parents, her father was a fool and her mother was a cold hearted selfish b**** who I really wanted to slap her silly. I recommend this book to others as it was very good.

I thank you, Ms. Cartharn for giving me the opportunity to read it

Unexpected gem

From the little pieces of the author's work that I had read, I knew I would enjoy this story but being a romance I wasn't expecting to have enjoyed it this much. Relatable characters that I was rooting for and a story that kept me turning the pages, I can't wait to read more.

“Freedom lies in the heart of every breathing animal, sir. Everyone wishes to have the opportunity to do what they want, live however they please even if those choices may not entirely be right. Because what is freedom than the freedom to err and learn from them? Laws that take away our rights to live freely are nothing more than metaphorical chains that enslave us. But then again, freedom these days feel like a climate which historically once showered upon us. It’s been so long though since we’ve had a taste of it, that sometimes I think it would be foolishly enthusiastic of us to hope for what seems now more like a fairytale.”

Jared Ryder

Ellie Callum

and my favorite; Wolf

What I love about this book

-The Humor it's the events after Jared found out that he's not human is hilarious!

The music played again as the couple continued to slow dance in the centre of the room.

“Keep those hands on her upper back, Jared,” Sam reminded. “Evelyn Callum is not your girlfriend yet.”

Tara bit her lip to stifle a giggle.

Jared scowled, “Cut it, Tara.”

“You’ve got two left feet, brother,” she whispered with a grin. “You sure you can pull this off?”

“If you don’t shut up, you’ll find yourself on the floor,” he warned
.
“If you don’t position your feet correctly, she will find her way to the floor,” Sam growled into his ear. "

-Romance It was just a simple attraction at first meeting or love at first sigh but they didn't meet again until half way of the book. I love it that this book didn't focus on the love story. The only problem for me it's that by then Jared already gave his heart to Ellie, I mean who does that?

Ellie's attitude She's very opinionated and doesn't back down when she think she's right. She's not afraid to voice out her mind.

What I didn't like:

-Vague Character Descriptions I don't know how I am going to picture the Characters without descriptions of their appearances.

-Grammatical errors I'm not saying my grammar is perfect, and I don't usually complain when I spot errors but there are some major ones that I couldn't ignore.

from the first chapter alone:

"His father had been arrested because he was suspected for hunting in the woods." or “If anything should happen to you, I don’t know what I’d do,”

now, they're a bit annoying to read, and as the story progresses, they still annoy the hell out of me, but I was too absorb in reading that I, marked them as "passable"

- The Pace Is tremendously torturous, nothing good is happening
in a plot like this one, there should be more action. The book started to be monotonous for me, a bit in some chapters.

all in all: I love the concept of the story, the author's imagination is amazing. But that's just it. I felt no spark when reading it. It got messy in the end, and I felt like the story was dragged on too long. anyway it's just my opinion!

~I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review~

My actual rating for this is 3.5 stars but for Goodreads I rated up.

First thing, I love the cover of the book! It immediately draws you in and made me want to read what the book was about. I included the old title in the synopsis because I wanted to show the difference between the titles. I like the title Claimed a lot more than Woodsmen. It totally made since as a title after reading the book but it also made it to Robin Hood for me.

Initially, I was kinda worried reading this. The first bit of the book reminded me a lot of Hunger games and also Robin Hood. There of course is nothing wrong with either of those but I am so glad it strayed from following into those plot lines. Soon though it became its own story with a really interesting world and approach.

It’s the year 3035. The world is now called New America and is broken up into sectors. Everything belongs to the corporation the earth, air, water, and forest.
Jared is 27 and from the poorest sector of District 8. He father was taken away by the government leaving him to provide for his mother, sister, and her two kids. Governor Callum, the leader of Sector 8, helped with the arrest of Jared’s father causing a burning hatred for all of the Callums.

Ellie is the exact opposite to Jared. She is the oldest daughter to Governor Callum and lives in a world of privilege and wealth. Appearance is the most important thing in her world. She is engaged to Edmund, her father’s future heir.

Jared and Ellie meet and are instantly drawn to each other. Both fight to forget each other knowing that they shouldn’t like each. Jared for is hatred of all of the Callums and Ellie because she is engaged to be married.

Being from two different worlds and Ellie basically being the enemy doesn’t stop Jared from being obsessed with her. He is disappointed because she is unavailable and becomes even more upset when he discovers he is a chimera. He has a really hard time dealing with who he is now and how Ellie would feel if she ever found out.

Jared joins the rebellion as the Archer but has a hard time dealing with it knowing that Ellie is on the other side of the fight.

As far as plot that is as much as I feel I can share without giving to much away. You will have to find out if the rebellion succeeds and/or Ellie and Jared end up together or not

The concept of using Chimera as the paranormal creature was brilliant. I hadn’t read anything with one before so defiantly a point for originality.

The information on how the government works was really nicely written. I loved how the current facts of international news is inter-weaved in the back story.

I loved watching Ellie and Jared come into who they are both were being pushed in to following what everyone else was telling them to do. I liked that they stood their ground on issues they believed in. Like when Ellie wanted to help the commoners even against her families opinion and Jared refusing to go through with Saunder’s plan.

I liked the balance between the romance and power struggle and didn’t feel that either over powered the other one. The biggest issue I had was the ending.. Is that it? Is there a second book?

**I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review.**

This book was a great start to what I hope will be a fantastic series. I can see it following the route of many other series’ leading up to a revolution. It was a great book that was well written with an original plotline and some really interesting characters.

The main character is Jared; he is from the lower end of the society and makes his living hunting illegally and then selling his meat. He lives with his sister and her two kids as well as his mother, the development in our storyline starts when Jared meets Ellie the governor’s daughter. Jared has a bad relationship with the governor and dislikes his sister working in the governor’s household. That’s when Jared’s life changes, he soon finds out a secret that’s been hidden from him his entire life a secret that helps him become a distinguished member of the society they live in and that will help him get closer to Ellie. I liked Jared as a character, especially as he came into his powers and accepted his responsibility to become a leader of the revolution.

The secondary characters include Ellie, Tara, Evelyn and Edmund. I especially liked Ellie and Tara; as they added more to the story in order to influence the progression of Jared’s character. Edmund is Ellie’s fiancé however we get the feeling throughout the book that the only reason they are together is so that Ellie’s father can progress Edmund’s career in politics. Evelyn is Ellie’s sister, she has been brought up in the same situation as Ellie however couldn’t be more different, and whereas Ellie questions everything to do with her upbringing Evelyn is a product of her upbringing.

The pacing of the story was great it gave us a good build up to the finale; it gives us a great insight into the characters’ lives and the difference between the wealth in society. It also gives us information on how the downfall of society began offering us a hard hitting truth that is very much applicable to our own lives.

The storyline was something many of us have read before, a futuristic society which is so close to our society it’s scary. However this story has a very different rebellion aspect to do with our main character and potentially other people involved in the rebellion.

Great book. Would love to read more books by this author 4 stars.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

CONTAINS SPOILERS.

Rating: I give the book 4.5 of 5 stars

Claimed is an interesting book. It is funny and romantic.
It is sweet and exciting. I hope there will be a continuation because quite some things are left open. Like the revolution, will they success? Did the Central Monologues end with the teacher’s leaving the leaders post or didn’t he really do that? Will Ellie reconcile with her family?

I liked that the two didn’t just accept that they were in love at first sight like in many other books. They struggled with it and they themselves thought it was crazy. They knew it was attraction and it became love after they knew each another better. It wasn’t that “oh it’s the first time I see you but I already love you” thing.
I couldn’t believe how Ellie’s parents treated her after her fiancé hit her. How could a stubborn and independent woman like her come out of a family where only looks and position matter?

I liked Ellie very much; she is strong, stubborn and independent. She cares for others and tries to help the ones who need it. She never gives up. She appreciates the way she had everything she wanted but knows other don’t have it and knows how the poor live miserably. She doesn’t try to look away and act as if everyone is alright.
I also liked Jared. He is full of spirit but also sweet and caring. He tries to do what he thinks is right even if it means doing some rash things that might upset others. He often get’s easily angry and is jealous but knows how to act correctly and can be a gentleman if he wants.

I didn’t like how his family only thought about the revolution and not about how he feels being a chimera and after all the information about James and his father. I mean, I understand that the revolution is important but they could have been more sympathetic with him after all that happened.

I really enjoyed reading this book and can recommend it to everyone who loves romance and dystopias, as well as strong characters who fight for the right things no matter what gets in their way.

Robin Hood meets Spiderman…
Clarissa Cartharn’s dystopian romance, The Woodsmen, is a page turner with rich characters that I fell in love with and hated for the story to end. Set in the year 3035, Cartharn has created a world where air, water, and food are all controlled by corporations which in turn control the government. The arrangement leads to a stratified class society where the haves refuse to give up their status, regardless of the detriment to humanity. Intertwined with the political problems of Cartharn’s world is the romance between Jared Ryder, a man born to be the leader of the resistance army and Ellie Callum, the Governor’s daughter. She stands to lose all social standing by following her heart, both to Ryder and to her belief in equal rights. Ryder stands to lose his life and his family.
I enjoyed following Ryder’s character development through the book. He begins as a man who is willing to withstand the burdens of being lower class for a sense of safety for his family. He tolerates the inequality rather than stand up for what he truly believes. It Is not until he is forced to recognize his true abilities and that he must be the resistance leader that I believe he becomes worthy of Ellie’s love.
Ellie is the iconic Maid Marian. She is sympathetic to the people of her Sector, willing to speak her mind, and finally, willing to lose her social status for what she believes is right. I love her strength of character throughout the book. The fact that both Ellie and Ryder are willing to sacrifice their own desires to help others makes it even sweeter when there is ultimately a very happily, ever-after.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

The first thing i loved about this book was the dystopian aspect, it was quite different and more realistic. I liked Jared instantly because he was so strong and protective of his family. Especially for his sister and his niece and nephew. I also found it quite cute when Jared kept dropping hints that he wanted to seduce Ellie instead of her sister. When Jared found out that his father had allowed them to do experiments on him, i could almost feel how bad he felt. But i admired how he put everything behind him to become the spy.

Ellie was just as amazing. From the moment i heard her speak, i knew she was going to be perfect for Jared. And i just loved the fact that she had this amazing confidence to fight for what she believed in. They both put aside their personal wants to become the change the society needed.

The author doesn't stick to Jared and Ellie's POV only, but instead she gives us views from different characters even the minor ones. So you could get a feel for each character and know what their motives were and what they thought about the society they lived in. The society itself was much more realistic and i thought it was a very creative vision of the future!

One thing i loved through the whole book, and yes that being deserves his own paragraph...IT'S...WOLF!! I love wolf so much! It was just so sweet that he went through everything with Jared and even being a chimera! I wish i had a dog like wolf:)

Bottom line, i absolutely loved this book and looking forward to the sequel!!!

My sincere thanks to the author for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy in exchange for my honest review.

When Jared Ryder storms into Callum House to stop his sister from working for the enemy, he is confronted with an equally raging Ellie Callum. He knows he should hate her- after all it was her father who was responsible for the death of his Da and the despicable oppression looming in his sector. But despite his pleading common sense, all he feels for her is instant attraction. But there is also something else that stands in his way from claiming her. He isn’t human.

I really enjoyed this dystopian story of Jared Ryder who finds out he is a chimera. He was created to join the rebellion against the Capital and the Corporations who rule the world. He hates Governor Callum and his family as he holds them responsible for the death of his father and the suppression in sector 8 where he lives. He doesn't want his family near the Callum's so he's completely against his sister working in the Governor's mansion and goes to bring her home immediately. That's where he meets Ellie and they both have an instant and intense attraction that they can't deny. They can't be together though since she is engaged and he is only part human from the very poor part of sector 8.

There's romance, action and a happy ever after with no cliff hanger. I do need more of Jared and Ellie's story though so I hope there is a book 2 in the works!

I have not written a review in a while, but when one of my favourite authors asked me to read her book in return for an honest review, how could I say no?

She was taking a chance with me, as she knows that fantasy and almost science fiction type books are not my cup of tea. Having said all that, I can with out a doubt say that the book was a hit with me!

Who does not like a love story where it almost seems impossible for the two characters to find their happily ever after?

Also I find myself thinking that it does not seem so farfetched that life could be this terrible in the year 3035, if you just have a look at how we as humans are treating each other and our planet! Yes I know, I sound like those conspiracy theory nuts who sees the bad in everything!!! Just saying....

Clarissa Cartharn as always wrote this story with enviable ease. In this day and age where everyone claims to be an author, but actually just puts a few words down on paper which is a whole lot of sex crazed drivel, it is refreshing still to read something that is tastefully written without all of the lewd language that are so prevalent in most of these books!

Do not get me wrong, I for one enjoy a good old filthy erotic novel, but you know what, sometimes the subtle and beautifully written poetry of desire between a man and a woman can be so much better!

If you have not read Claimed yet, do yourself the favour and read it!

*A complimentary e-copy of this book was given to me by the author in exchange for my honest review.*

Claimed is a story of liberation, equality, freedom, genetic mutations, and romance. We get a realistic view of how the world could be in the future. Our main character, Jared Ryder, finds out that he is a chimera, genetically altered to be half human, half animal. He is the hope of the rebellion in Sector 8 of New America. His love interest is none other than the daughter of the Governor of Sector 8, Ellie Callum. She's fierce, out-spoken, and yet she's vulnerable. She's betrothed to an arrogant ass of a man, Edmund,(who is to take over office once her father retires) but falls head over heels for Jared. Jared feels he wouldn't be able to be with her because of what he is & Ellie the same because of her social status. However, in the end they are both working together for the same goal: Freedom & equality for the oppressed people her father governs. I do hope there is another book. There were some things left unfinished and would hope what they started would give hope to others in the rest of the sectors. Overall, a fantastic read. Full of suspense, action, & romance. The writing just flows from one page to the next as I was just wanting to know how it would end. I really do hope to read more about Jared & Ellie's plight for freedom.

I was given this book by the author for an honest review, and I honestly liked it!
The Woodsmen is set in the distant future. Corporations have taken over the running of the world from the Government, and the Government really doesn't do much beyond political posturing and running small sectors of the world. Regular people are forced to work hard for next to nothing and are basically starving. The Woodsmen are a group of men trying to change things for the better, led by the genetically altered panther/eagle man Jared Ryder. He meets and falls in love with Sector 8 Govenor's daughter, Ellie, which doesn't fit in with plans. Read and see how they deal with this. Slow moving at first, this book was well worth the read- although it ended when I was really starting to love and get into it! Can't wait for the next book to come out so I can see what happens to Jared and Ellie, and Jared's sister Tara! Loved these characters! The author really let's you get to know them, and makes you hate the wealthy jerks with their foot on the throats of the poor!

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

I really enjoyed reading this book.

The author has created a wonderful world of both fantasy and reality, A book that was easy to read with great characters. The concept of the Chimera, Brilliant!
An awesome start to hopefully a fantastic series.

The future 3035, a place (New America) divided by the haves and the have nots, the rich and powerful against the poor hard working. Where the corporations and government are in control! Is it time for a revolution?

Jarrod Ryder "Chimera", a human with panther and eagle DNA that was inserted before birth, Parahuman faster and stronger the unwilling participant in the war brewing in sector 8..
Ellie Callum daughter of the governor of sector 8, rich, beautiful and engaged to a man with political aspirations, who's being groomed to be the next governor. A well educated woman that has realised the inequality of her world and wants to do something to help the poor!

Will they join the rebellion? I recommend you read it and discover for yourself.

Dive into a futuristic world where the government oppresses, every common man is struggling, and where a half-human half-animal man exists. Jared Ryder is struck by the fact that he’s not just a normal guy. Struggling with his fate, Jared finds himself smack in the middle of a revolution and finding himself falling for a girl that he can’t have.

If you’re a romance fan, you will really love the spin in this romance book. You’re not just getting the average story here, as you experience Jared and Ellie’s world. You find yourself hoping for things to start working out for Jared’s village. A bit political for me at times, but I still really enjoyed the flow of the story, Ellie’s defiant nature, and Jared’s desperation to have a girl that he can’t have. Check this one out!

A Dystopian story with a difference

I don't often read dystopian stories, but I was hooked into this book immediately by the vivid and captivating characters. There's so much going on in this novel; adventure, social comment, action, suspense, politics and romance. The love story thread in the book is great and I so enjoyed the way Jared and Ellie connect and interact. This is a great fantasy story to keep you turning the pages and thinking about long after you have finished the book. Highly recommend to fans of dystopia, fantasy, sci-fi, and romance.

Claimed by Clarissa Cartharn is a dystopian paranormal romance for new adults. Set in the year 3035, Jared is from the wrong side of the tracks and meets the governor's daughter, Ellie. The instant attraction drives the story. Both are independent thinkers and have a social conscience.

Will Jared spread his wings and help the cause? And will Ellie fly with him?
I look forward to the second book.

Normally, I am not a fan of dystopian tales, but the relationship between Jared and Ellie kept me interested enough that I wanted to read on. The evolution of Jared takes the story on a path that not only sets up a second book, but also fuels the fire of Jared and Ellie’s love story. I enjoyed this book!

Claimed was a good, clean, quick read, filled with romance, suspense and action. I like the twist of paranormal to the dystopian theme of the story. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. This story takes place in the future but entailed a lot of references to the past.
