Angel Song

Rate this book
Angels eagerly watch over Ann Fletcher's every move. She just doesn't know it yet.

Ann Fletcher has returned to Charleston to see her younger sister Sarah receive her master's degree. But she soon finds herself riding in the back of an ambulance, watching helplessly as Sarah fights for her life. As they race to the hospital, Sarah talks to someone who is not there...and hums a melody Ann has never heard before.

That unfamiliar, unearthly beautiful melody keeps finding Ann--first in the hospital chapel, then in her dreams, and finally in Sarah's empty house.

Two neighbors have a profound effect on Ann. Ethan McKinney lends her a shoulder to lean on. And as a carpenter, he volunteers to help Ann get the Fletcher family home into shape for selling. His strong presence is a pleasing distraction. Ann's twelve-year-old neighbor, Keith, has Down Syndrome and the guile to believe he can actually see and hear angels. In fact, he insists they are looking out for her in ways she's never imagined.

God begins to reveal himself to Ann--both in her newfound friends and through supernatural events. As she discovers the very real presence of angels around her, will she finally open her heart to receive God's healing love?

Christian fiction keeps letting me down by being entirely and completely predictable and pretty dull. Not to mention the 200-pages-or-less romances that I'm absolutely sick to death of reading. Missionary dating over and over again, let's git-em-saved so we can marry 'em.....

This one was a pleasant read, little more. Nothing particularly unique about it.

Jan Karon, when will you give me something new to read?

This story was both sad and heartwarming at the same time. After Ann Fletcher loses her sister, Sarah in an accident, she begins to be haunted by a tune that she hears. As Ann readies Sarah's home, the home they both grew up in, to be sold she meets a carpenter, and her neighbors, Tammy and her son, Keith who has Down Syndrome. Keith draws pictures of Ann with angels in them. This disturbs her at first but then she begins to look forward to the pictures. Do the tune and the pictures have something to do with each other? Will she listen to the angels and open her heart to God? This story is lovely but it is a bit predictable. I didn't find that to be a bad thing. This book did cause me to think about angels and the role they may play in our lives. If you are a fan of christian fiction I think you will enjoy this book.

I'd actually rate this a 2.5. It's a good story. The problem I have with this book, as with most books published specifically for the Christian market, is that the story is weak. It's a good story, there just isn't much depth to it. You know pretty quickly how the whole story is going to end up.

This is a heart-warming story of a lost and broken young woman who tries to avoid the pain of her past by chasing what the world defines as success. When tragedy forces her to face her past, she meets faith and love which work together to bring healing.

Starts off sad but there's a lot more to this story than sadness. I really liked this book and had trouble putting it down. I think I read it in 3 days. Romance, light spirituality, and a bit of angst. Good characters and a good ending. Happy happy.

"Ann woke up earlier than usual the next morning, surprised by the silence. Not one single note of music. As much as this should have relieved her--and it did, to some degree--it also left her feeling as though something was missing."

This book had a slow start for me, but I think it had to do with my mind still stuck on the other book I just finished.

Ann, a woman in her early 30's, is someone who is soul searching, and yearning for truth in her life. Although she doesn't know quite where to find it, she realizes that all along, God is there with her even in times when He feels most absent. While going back to her hometown, Ann discovers parts of her life that she never wanted to revisit before; those remnants she avoided for so long and that now, were catching up to her. She struggles like most women would and fights to keep her life in control. She soon realizes that even when things don't make sense, there is a God out there who has been watching her all this time.

Interwoven with beautiful imagery and striking characters, Ann comes to acknowledge God by the people He sends to be a part of her life. Their kindness and dedication is not one she understands and I think that's what's also great about this book. It is a realization of how life is always constantly changing, but a reminder--in that the same--that God will never change.

I like all the characters, and there's a lot to learn and take from each one. Keith, who is a loving boy is often rejected and treated as an outsider because he has Down Syndrome. His special ability and gift from God though is that he has a heart that loves without end and is unconditional. Many would mistaken this as foolishness, but I think we all need this kind of person in our lives...that will always be there to greet us and offer a hug when all things feels so complicated. Keith does just that, he is a squirming little joy that has a big heart.

One of my favorite lines in the book was this section:
"Annie, Annie. I knew you'd be back soon. I just knew it......

Ann hugged back, so amazed at the sense of love that seemed to follow this kid. "You did? How did you know?"

"It told me so."

"Your angel?"

"No. My heart did."

"Your heart was right."

"Yeah, I know." :')
"Never doubt your heart." He said it as if he were telling her that the sun rises every morning and sets every night. :')

Overall, this book is about the old meeting the new, and how we can't come to understand our present lives without looking back at once was. Although to me, it has a bitter notation, it reminds me all the same. Ann, I could relate to as a person, because her hurts are deep, and she is one who tries to run away and ignore the pain she feels. She's brilliant, beyond doubt, but needs a little reminder from time to time, that she must open her heart to truly love and be loved again.

This is the story of Ann Fletcher, a New York City home and office staging designer, who finds herself at a crossroad where she must choose between success in the big city and what she knows deep down is the right thing to do.

She is happily progressing in the business world until the death of her sister Sarah brings her back to her childhood home in Charleston and the reality that she is all alone in the world.

Sarah's friends show Ann the same Christian love they had shared with Sarah, but Ann only wants to sell the house and get back to New York. She is torn between wanting to let Sarah's friends into her life and pushing them away so that it won't hurt her so much when she leaves Charleston. Sarah's neighbor Tammy and her son Keith get close to Ann as does Ethan, who feels compelled to help Ann. Keith, who has Down's Syndrome sees angels, and points out the ones who are always with Ann. Ann doesn't believe in angels, but she hears music (angel song) she can't explain.

The overall message of Angel Song is inspiring, without being preachy. Because of the way it is crafted, the angel element of the story is believable. The book moved slowly in places and it wasn't until near the last one-fourth of the book that I became more emotionally involved.

One message in the book is that we always have choices. Even when Ann had to make decisions that might negatively impact the lives of her friends and her friend's children, she had a choice. Another message is that no one is alone in the world.

This book is worth reading, just give it time to hook you.

You will definitely want to keep some tissues handy with this book! It's one of those with an overall sadness to it. Other than that, I really enjoyed reading Angel Song.
I was expecting more "supernatural" events from what I read in the description. That's a very minor part of the book. You're mostly left with the decision of what you want to believe about the book and the characters. I couldn't help but think that the angels of this story are just as mysterious as the ones in the Bible. God didn't give us a whole lot of information about angels. I like to think He wants to save them as a surprise when we get to Heaven. :)
This is also one of those books that you know what's going to happen. There really aren't any surprises and yet I was really drawn into the story and couldn't wait to see exactly how things came together.
I grew to love most of the characters. You can't help but love Keith! It really brought to my mind the verses about having faith like a child. This book will really make you think about angels and people in general. After reading this book, I plan on re-reading the Bible story of Hagar, because it is mentioned several times throughout the book.
I'm so glad that I got to read this book, and I highly recommend it.

A friend gave me this book and I put it aside, not thinking it was for me. I finally read it and I enjoyed it. It is actually refreshing to read a book that is Christian all the way through and in the simplest way. The main character is not a believer and it takes a lot to even get her to look in the direction of God. Sweet.

Bittersweet, uplifting story of a woman who is running from her losses and grief. Ann Fletcher goes home to Charleston to celebrate her sister’s graduation but within hours is stunned by her sister’s death from a car accident. While at the hospital, Ann hears beautiful music and her sister is humming the tune before she dies. Ann is a high powered interior decorator in New York and thinks that getting back there to a new job will help her get on track, but at the same time, she keeps thinking about the young Down’s boy next door who says angels are all around her and they will help her.

Have faith, had faith, lost faith, turned away from faith, not sure what you believe in? This book is for everyone! Whatever it is you have faith in, or believe in, this sweet story will liven up your spirit. Look for signs and recognize them when they come whop you upside your head! You might find yourself falling for the neighbors next door, the oh so sweet handy-man, and the angels in disguise as you become immersed in the charms of Charleston.

Audiobook - First off I appreciate the faith based plot but that’s about all I liked. Sadly.
Slowest moving book I’ve ever read (listened to). Cheesy even. There were even product advertisements (plugs) in this book. And gracious, the narrator is so pitiful. You can hear her swallowing, turning pages, licking her lips etc etc etc. I believe her broken speech also made the book more cheesy too. I wanted to love this book. It just didn’t happen.

Beautifully written story of loss, reconnecting with the past, your roots.

Ann has seemed to have lost touch with her passions and what she wants from life as a result of throwing herself into her career. After a tragedy in her personal life, she is forced to reconcile the life she once knew and is simultaneously delivered into an overly welcoming community, or at least in her opinion they are!

Sometimes it’s difficult to know you need healing when you struggle to face your wounds.

Spectacular

It isn't often I use that word reviewing a book but that describes this one perfectly. I kept trying to figure things out and the authors stumped me at every turn! I loved that this book isn't predictable but you can't wait to see what's next. Everyone should read this book and I hope I see more from this duo! Maybe in an dark ages scenario??

3 1/2 stars. The story was well written: vivid descriptions, characters we get to know, good tension. But, I just couldn’t get into the music theme and all it represented. The author read the story herself and a few times I couldn’t tell which character she was. Only happened a few times so not a real big deal.

I read many different types of books but this one drew me into the story. What do we hear in our daily lives? Are we really listening to life and life beyond? This would be a good book for Christian book clubs.

A cheesy story that probably is fit for the YA category. Plot is very simple and predictable. I couldnt stand how Tammy was so invasive initially, no boundaries and Ann seems to be spineless in all her relationships. A complete bore.

Sorry, just not my style of book. At first I was riveted because of the accident and "signs" of angels but the main character was so...selfish, frustrating, something like that. I didn't like her and ended up skimming this.

This book fit my needs when I read it. A bad cold set in and I picked up this "pass it on when you finish" book from my bestie group of friends. It relaxed me, lifted my spirits, and provided a much-needed alternative mindset as I forgot my illness (sort of) as I read this entertaining book.
