PROCEEDS FROM 9TH LIFE GO TO
GOOD MEWS NO-KILL CAGE-FREE CAT SHELTER

~ Concerning Zookeepers ~
Working with the wild is a diverse calling. You learn to scale heights and sedate hurts, rate scars and skin rats, celebrate life and suffer loss. Animals are freer with their acceptance and adoration, also fiercer when angered or threatened. All in all, it’s a safe way to live passionately.
So Skyler thought.
Then he came. Lines were blurred.

~ Concerning Shapeshifters ~
Being a shapeshifter is to know life at its depths. The initiated know the truth. It’s all One. Form is an idea. Ideas can be changed.
But all ideas are not equal.
So Bastian learned.
Then he found her. Lines were crossed.

Skyler Ashcraft never could have guessed the line crossed when she drugged an injured lynx. What Bastian was didn’t even footnote in her zookeeper’s manual. But it did nearly overshadow what he hid.
Secrets are like lines. They divide.
Before and After. Truth or Lie.
Life or Death.

NOTE: New Adult is a diverse genre. 9th Life contains no sex, but the rest of the series does. Mild language throughout. (I get asked about these things a lot so thought I'd share.)

New Adult Paranormal Romance

Zookeeper-turned-author Wendy Beck is more accustomed to wrestling gators than grammar. She has a conservation biology degree from Oglethorpe University and learned a whole lot of 'hands-on' studying killer whales in Puget Sound, loggerhead sea turtles on Cumberland Island, and everything else at Noah’s Ark in Locust Grove. She went on to serve as the animal caretaker for Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail in Athens for four years before moving back to the Atlanta area.

She lives with the love of her life and personal hero, Mike, and can be found reading, running an independent bookstore, practicing kriya yoga, and more.

Just a few things you need to know before you read 9th Life…

This isn’t just another shapeshifter romance. The dialogue is witty and snarky and real – even (and maybe especially) the internal dialogue. The story is sophisticated and thought provoking and intense, but also engaging and readable and fun. The characters will pull extreme and even seemingly contradictory responses from you – loyalty, protectiveness, admiration, disgust, amusement, anger, frustration, and just downright love! And the romance… the romance will take your breath away.

There is a really good chance that you will fall in love, perhaps even more than once. This is okay – don’t beat yourself up or feel fickle. It’s a completely natural response. Bastian is… well, he’s truly extraordinary, but he isn’t the only one!

There’s an even bigger chance that once you start reading, you won’t be able to put this book down, so plan accordingly by calling in sick, scheduling a sitter, and clearing your social calendar. You will get sucked into this world, and you won’t want to leave it for mundane tasks like dinner or sleep.

You can and should expect spontaneous outbursts of emotion such as chuckles, sniffles, gasps, sighs, and screams of “NO!”

And the most important thing to know, and trust me, you will be very glad to know this in the very near future… the story doesn’t end here. You don’t have to force yourself to slow down when you get toward the end of the book, because you simply can’t bear to leave the characters or their amazing world (yes, this is a documented response.) Relax! You will be able to visit your friends there again very soon.

So now you know what you need to know to prepare you for the wonder that is 9th Life. So buy it. Read it. Love it.

Beck told me when I started this book that it would be hard to review this book without spoilers. So true. So I am going to focus on things other than the storyline. What you see in the summary is what you get. Sort of. There is actually more that goes on, but like I said, spoilers and what not. All I will say is that the world Skyler thought she knew, it just doesn't exist anymore. Something bigger has taken its place.

The book started off confusing for me. I had no idea what was going on. But soon, I slipped into this world and as time went on, more and more things became clearer to me. Yet, more questions would arise.

Such a unique story. Not the story itself, but all of it as a whole. Everything combined: the writing, the storyline, the characters. It was so beautifully done. I think out of it all I am most impressed with the authors writing. It is actually very poetic. It is different from what I am used to reading and took a moment for me to get used to. But once I did, I felt as if I was really experiencing the book instead of just reading it. Oh lord, that probably makes absolutely no sense to you does it?

Through the first half of the book, we are slowly introduced to a Bastian’s world and during this time a relationship is growing between him and Skyler. Nothing too quick. Just perfectly paced. But the second half is where things are revealed: feelings and more revelations. And my heart was happy and full, only to be breaking and hurting in the next breath. I was spinning. I was experiencing. I was enamored with this book!

If you are looking for a book just about shapeshifters then move along. But if you are looking for a book that gets you thinking, gets you feeling, and it just happens to be about shapeshifters....then this is the book for you. I was so taken with it. I cannot wait for when I get to start on the next book in the series, THE FORGOTTEN. 5 Outstanding Stars!

Beck's writing is sophisticated and lyrical. Her zookeeper background lends authenticity to her shape-shifter new adult series. It's fast-paced and steeped in romance -- a love story that drew me in from the beginning.

The world-building in this book is complex and exquisite. What makes it superior is that it explores the deep philosophical questions of how life exists, how matter and energy affect our physical bodies, and how we impact our destiny with our thoughts and actions. All that -- on top of a great romance.

Intense, full of action, and emotional conflict, the story truly depicts a first all-consuming love. Her paranormal novel reads with the relentless feels, and often humor, that's been the trademark of so many contemporary New Adult works such as those written by Colleen Hoover.

Beck achieves all of this with a writing style that manages to be lyrical and yet edgy. The words and symbolism and pacing are excellent.

I highly recommend this.

This book will really appeal to readers who have matured beyond the Twilight-level paranormal book. The writing, symbolism, metaphysics, and world-building is highly sophisticated, but the main focus of the book is the intense relationship between Sky and Bastion--and that will hook the reader.

The really unique thing about this book is the level at which the author understands and communicates animal/human relationships. Most shape-shifter books use the animal/human relationship as a plot device. This book uses it as a deeply explored theme, too.

Highly recommended.

Love Wendy Beck's writing style and sharp humor. Fans of shapeshifter books will enjoy all the details and setup for Bastian, the hero. Loved how she used a lynx in this; it's fresh and different from other shifter books.

The relationship between Skylar and Bastian grows at a good pace; we learn more about each character as the stakes get higher.

This is her first book in the series, and I look forward to the others!

I'm not huge on shifter books, if I am being 100% honest I can't even really explain why I don't care for them but I think it has something to do with the romance in them sometimes blurring that line between human and animal and bestiality... So when I got the chance to review 9th Life I was a little bit hesitant. I went over to GoodReads and checked the blurb, I read a few reviews and then I realized that I was hooked already! I simply HAD to read this book!

To put it mildly, 9th Life is NOT simply another shape-shifter romance! Wendy Beck takes this book to an entirely new level with her writing style. The dialog is just so real, if not a bit witty and well "smart-assy" (what it's a word...okay so it's totally not a word, but it should be!) especially if you take the internal-dialog into account! It is easy to see how Wendy's zookeeper background helps to shape the story into something unique and amazing! The descriptions of animals and the world-building are so complex and charming that you will find yourself often forgetting that this is not a true story and you are not really there! The story is thought provoking, engaging, fun, easy to read and lovable! The extreme depths that this book goes to are mind blowing! It makes you think about how life exists, how our physical bodies are affected by matter and energy, and most of all how we can impact our destiny, or fate, with our thoughts and actions. Wendy manages not only all of that, but also works in one amaze-balls romance!
MFEO2
Bastian and Sklyer definitely deserve the MFEO stamp of approval!
Skyler and Bastian are such realistic and deep characters that you will find yourself lost and longing to know more! The chemistry between these two literally left me breathless!

Skyler is a zookeeper...whose life is about to change in ways that she never could have imagined! It's hard to explain a lot about Skyler and Bastian without spoilers so honestly this part of the review may be shorter than you are used to. When Skyler rescues a lynx that rescued her from a hunter (confusing I know...) her life is thrown upside down in the best of ways!

Bastian is our hero, our shape-shifter, and the amount of details and build up for him is extraordinary! I adore the fact that Wendy went with cats, it's just a new and un-tapped market on the shifter side of things. I mean a Lynx is a beautiful creature and the way she describes him is just so in depth and perfect that you can't help but fall in love with him! Watching his reactions to Skyler's world and culture is just precious and endearing and his honesty and forwardness brings the relationship to a new level.

The romance flows so smoothly and slowly that it is easy to fall in love yourself! I would compare the pace and romance style to that of Ull and Kristia in S.T. Bende's Elsker Saga! The friendship and bond that Bastian and Skyler form is precious and daunting. As the book moves forward into the second half, the romance gets a little more steamy and we learn of true feelings and breaking hearts. Just like with Ull and Kristia, there are things that hold Bastian back from pursuing Skyler fully. As these revelations came about, I found myself reeling, spinning, and biting my lip as I waited for the next page to reveal something that would fix things.

I will admit that the first few chapters of this book were a bit difficult to read. Wendy's writing style is very unique and real and it took me a bit to get used to. Oh, but once I was used to it...the story bloomed into this amazing world! As I read more and more, so much became clear to me and still more questions would pop up! What a way to write and keep your reader wanting more! I still cannot get over how wonderful this book is! It gets you thinking about the world around you, the possibilities for change, the uselessness of the material things that we have in excess...it is a real eye opener!

9th Life left me with a happy and yet heavy heart, willing to give up my "9th Life" to get my hands on the next book in the series, and crossing my fingers that things go smoothly for Bastian and Skyler because they deserve a happily ever after!

If you are looking for a wonderful, fun and steamy shifter romance that is intense, filled to exploding with action, and emotional conflict then this is definitely the book for you!

This book! This. book. Wow.

Wendy Beck takes you to such a beautiful world with compelling characters. It's so rare to find such a powerful story laced with just the right amount of humor. I would go from sobbing to roaring laughter and back again. Her humor is reminiscent of Darynda Jones' Grave series.

I can't believe I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this trilogy! Having read all three books a few times I can tell you the story gets better with each read! And the exciting part is that each book will be released very close together. [no long waits!!!!!]

Let me tell you. Even though the 9th Life is my favorite of the series because I love beginnings, book 2 [The Forgotten], impacted me the most. Beck ripped my heart out and made me like it. I was so enthralled in the emotion of the story and sobbing so loudly that my roommates came running in thinking I was vomiting.

This is one journey you want to take. Go read it now. I mean it. Stop reading this and go read 9th Life.

9th Life introduces a fascinating new twist to the were/shifter genre. At this point, I thought I'd seen every possible angle, but I should know by now that every author has the potential to bring a whole new world into being. This particular world has probably the most unique view on shifters that I've ever seen (which is saying a lot given the books I've read).

The story is full of plot twists and turns, reveals that you should've seen coming but didn't, and finishes with a need to know how the story continues on. The reimagined tale of Beauty and the Beast as shifters is inspired, and once Skyler enters the world of shifters, or Ailuro in this case, the intensity really picks up and kicks the need to know and understand and follow their story into high gear.

I have read this book, and will definitely read it again…it's definitely one you where catch something new with each reading. Wendy's dialogue is so vivid…she write the kinds of conversations we all want to have! Deep, intense, thought-provoking, but with an awesome sense of humor that had me laughing out loud at times. I love the world she has created, and all of the strong and unique characters in it…she makes me want to be Ailuro! Wendy uses the "paranormal elements" in a way that made me go along with the story and mythology without having to constantly suspend disbelief. The magic and wonder of it all is just a given, and watching it all unfold through Skyler's eyes is exciting…definitely one that keeps you guessing. This book has many shades of nuances that weave into each other; I was definitely invested until the very last page, and of course, with that, I was left wanting to continue on the journey! I love how the depth of feeling, trust, intimacy, and passion between the main characters grows in such a romantic and organic way. A very enthusiastic recommendation!

I purchased this book as I saw an author I like (can't remember who) promoting this book where all the proceeds go to a no-kill cat shelter. Great cause. Book only cost a few dollars. Bought it.

After I bought the book, I clicked on goodreads and noticed that it had like a 4.6 overall rating. Intrigued, I clicked on the book and noticed that all the reviews were pretty much five stars quoting things like "Best book ever". I know there is a lot of authors up in arms about negative trolls leaving bad reviews of books, but I also think genuine readers are equally frustrated with overly glowing one sided reviews which make you think money has been shelled out or they have incredibly supportive family/friends. It sets up unrealistic expectations to readers and makes me quite cynical about trusting these reviews. Still, it is my own fault as there are less than 20 reviews so that should have been the give away....

So anyway, I start reading and it really should have been a DNF for me. I could not get into the first 100 odd pages and I didn't want to read any further. The meeting scene seemed rushed and forced and downright confusing. The writing was quite clunky in places (and I say this with the greatest respect for how difficult it is to write and to actually publish). The only reason I kept reading was because I am doing a stupid reading BINGO challenge and needed a "book with a number in the title". Damn stubbornness.

However, the stupid BINGO challenge turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the book has a really unique premise once it got past the initial 100 pages. I initially wanted to give this one star, but for the premise and the potential of where the series could go, the book made me turn this around into a realistic 3 star rating. The idea is a unique take on shifters and I confess I bookmarked the section where the character was re-telling the true beauty and the beast storyline. What an excellent premise to build on. However, it is only a 3 star read for me as for large parts of the book I had no idea what really was happening. I don't think many key things were explained well (and that may be so it can be discussed further in later books, but it frustrated me as it seemed incomplete rather than building anticipation). I stand by my initial comment that this book is clunky in places. There are dozens upon dozens of sentences that to me don't really make sense and I found myself having to re-read paragraphs over and over trying to work out what the hell was happening.

Overall, an interesting first book. A lot of promise. The writing is by no means bad as the writer has a great skill in showing character development and boy did I feel the genuineness and intensity of the main relationship (way better than many well known authors...amazing!). But I think it could benefit from more polishing in sentence structure and clarity of prior events.

~Review~

I believe there is a calling for each and one of us. No matter what, it calls something deep in us like, the serpent responding to the lute of his master. It awakens us from an unknown slumber, slowly and seductively. And like a serpent waiting greedily for its masters continuous notes; I read patiently savoring the voyage. Until the next time the master wakes his serpent for the next song. In other words; I was the hypnotize serpent and the song played was the debut novel: 9th Life by Wendy Beck.

It pleases me to say that it’s an extraordinary work! The story it’s not your average girl- meets- boy and they fall madly in love at first glance. No, it’s a rich and multilayered story that every time you thing you found the missing puzzle, its smacks you in the face with new facts or forgotten bread crumbs. Even the world this author creates is beautiful and captivating. It grasped my attention since the first chapter with only a sentence, and what a sentence it was! “Belief is a poor substitute for experience. There’s only one. All of us. Everything.”- Fragment from 9th Life by Wendy Beck.

Also, this story leads you to a merry chase, but it’s worth it! Because, she will make you adore the characters and make you feel like you are one of them; even the internal struggle will make you feel for them. And what this author brings to the table, it’s something for the big guys. (Yeah. It’s that good!) Your mind will burst with so many details, that are simple outstanding! In conclusion, it was a privilege to read this work from this author and a great must read!

9th Life is a heartwarming shifter romance that will suck you in almost immediately. If you need a new book boyfriend, Bastian is just waiting for a belly rub. I’m totally in love with him but I’ll be happy to share. Wendy Beck is an incredible story architect; her characters, their societies and emotions are very immersive and keep the reader engaged and wanting more. The Forgotten (book 2) is already loaded on my eReader and I’m hoping to see more from this author, this series has tons of potential and is perfect for my evening escape from reality. Sky and Bastian, take me with you I’m ready for an adventure….

The snarky commentary and the love story play a yin and yang that produces a perfect story telling theme. Beck tells a story of love and loss. She enables you to be all entranced with the characters. You want to scream at the top of your lungs for these characters. Beck is the new writer for 2014.

This book took a little while for me to get into (For some reason the prologue really confused me), but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I just loved how unique this story's plot was. I've read quite a few new adult books so far, and this book really added something different to the NA drama (This is the first shifter NA book I've read). I mean, there was the typical romance that I've come to expect from the genre, but 9th Life had plenty of action to keep readers entertained. As an added bonus the dialogue was entertaining and quick which added to the story's charm. Overall, this was a nice and unique NA read for fans of the genre looking for something different. :)

Just read book one of 9th Life series by Wendy Beck. I love the story line of devotion to each other through many trials. Love the fantasy world of having a race of people who live, love, and work together without egos and competition messing with everyone’s feelings. A race who understands that we live in an energy “field” so all of our negatives affect others, as do our positives. This race understands that the gift of one isn’t a reduction to the gift of another. Then there is also the “normal” race to contend with in living. That race wants more power, more gifts, more everything. Ok, bring on the next one; I am not a patient person. Humm, puts me in the wrong race??

Psychocat Reads Review of 9TH LIFE by Wendy Beck

Just a note before I get into the usual critera, while I enjoyed the entire book, the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter were absolute bonus gems. As a human living with two cats, and having spent my life around countless others, I found each one delightful.

The Characters: Thank you Wendy for creating a heroine that is absolutely a blast to get to know. From the beginning of the book, the things that Skyler thinks and says made me absolutely love her. I really think she'd fit in well around the Dragon Blog. I also found Bastian easy to love. He's a very unique character full of strength and grace, while also deeply tourmented. The engagement between these two is absolutely priceless. There are plenty of other great characters, but to go into those would potentially spoil things, so you're just going to have to read for yourself.

The Relationships: To be honest, I can't go into much for this category without giving things away. I will say, the story hinges on several different relationships. You'll spend a fair amount of time wondering what secrets are being kept, and what real motives lie behind certain decisions. These questions will keep you turning the pages right up until the end.

World Building: Wendy did a great job of building the reader's knowledge about the Ailuro throughout the story. It all unfolds in a way that keeps you wanting more, but allows you to get engrossed in he world. Her unique shifter mythology is quite fascinating.

The Book As Part of a Series: As the first book a series, 9TH LIFE is perfectly positioned. The story is fantastic on it's own, but it leaves you anxiously waiting for more of the story.

Jen's Final Rating: 5 STARS!! I expected to like it, but I was suprised just how much I loved it! You can bet the rest of the series will show up in future reviews.

Psychocat's Final Rating: 5 CLAWS! With all the feline elements of this book, it should be no surprise that Psychocat approves.

I really enjoyed reading this book, the words flowed so smoothly and the story line is fresh and unique. This is a whole new spin on shape-shifting and the paranormal, one that was fresh and exciting, not to mention the love story woven so perfectly throughout. Wendy Beck wrote the conversations we all wish we could have and did them with exceptional timing, thought provoking, deeply intense at times, but with a wicked sense of humor that had me laughing out loud at just the right moments. The symbolism, pacing, and words were superb!
The characters in this story all fit together seamlessly, the action and conflicts that Skyler and Bastian go through together solidify and strengthen their already intense bond. I adored Skyler from the very beginning, she's honest, strong of character, protective, caring, snarky, intuitive, easily flustered, but down to earth and grounded. Bastian is absolutely perfect, I applaud Wendy Beck for pulling him off so well, he is dark, mysterious, brooding, moody, punishing himself constantly, but completely loyal, always honest, cares with his whole heart and is fiercely protective of the woman he loves. The relationship and banter between the two is unforgettable, and the way in which they ease into what becomes their relationship, instead of the "insta-love" in which most stories have, is just perfect.
I do as many read and reviews as I can and I am always excited and pleased to find a story like this that draws me in and captivates me so completely that I want to support the writer and purchase the book that was gifted me. I cannot wait to read the follow up to "9th Life", Wendy Beck you are an amazingly talented writer and I wish you never to run out of creativity!

Bastian, Bastian, Bastian...

"She asked you to stop."
Hudson turned frowning. "And I asked if you were seeing my girlfriend."
"I'm asking if you're hearing your girlfriend."
To my shock, Hudson threw a punch at Bastian's face. It never landed. Bastian didn't even blink. He simply caught the fist in his hand, his calm unwavering.
"Stop," he repeated, but Hudson pulled back his other fist - and that's when Bastian's amiable nature ran out. That punch was never thrown.
Hudson hit the wall with Bastian's grip clamped around this throat. He clawed helplessly at it, barley managing to cough out, "Stop!"
Bastian drew close, his calm now disturbing. "I though we were taking our time to figure out what that word means."

~sighs so contently~ Just wow! My heart melted a little more with each chapter in this story. Bastian is damaged, more damaged than he even realizes. Other than one or two little scenes in the story, he will melt your heart.

I loved this story. LOVED THIS STORY!

"Well, I didn't lay down my life for you." I smiled. "I laid down my ninth for you." "In that case,"..."You are my life."

A zoo full of animals, shapeshifters, firsts (so many firsts), friendship, drama, romance, betrayal, and the power to choose. Amazing, amazing story!

This is a really nice new shapeshifter YA romance novel. The dialoges are really real, sassy and relatable and just a typical response you would expect. The story line is very simple yet very unique in its own way. The plot is just so intriguing that you just want to keep reading. The Characters go through extremes and they all are so loyal, brave and quite stubborn at time (But still loved it!) And then comes the romance..... MY OHHH MYYY! where do I begin??? Its absolutely breath-taking and wonderful!

If you really love reading about full on romance, then this is the book for you!You will fall in love with the characters and just fall for Bastian!!! He is totally something else! There is so much going on in this book that your emotions go all over the place. Gasp... then screams and then cries!

Luckily the story contiunes with more romance, love tirangles, magic and an epic battle! I really cant wait to read the rest of the series! I hope they are just as good!

After my wife ignored me for 10 hours straight to read this book I had to give it a try.

I found this book to be surprisingly masculine. While the the love story does take center stage the author doesn't water down the adventure to highlight the romance.

I loved being taken to another world with the Ailuro shifters and seeing how Skylar and Bastian navigate between the Ailuro reality and the modern world. The relationship between the two of them is quite unique and will hook you instantly. By chapter 3 I was asking my wife if she had book 2 ready for me so I could continue this amazing journey.

This is a highly recommended page turner that deserves a much better review than I am capable of writing.

"There's only One. All of us. Everything."

To Me that one quote stood out and was my guideline to the book. this isn't your typical shapeshifter book so get that out of your head right away. this is a masterpiece with characters you love and find addictive.
I'm not sure how to express how much i loved this book I'm still trying to come up with the right words, but cant wait to continue reading the other books in this series.

I recommend it to everyone that loves a story that feels real and drags you in from the start and makes you not want to put the book down just in case you miss something.

I received this book in return for an honest review.
I enjoyed the read. It was fast and easy. The characters were mysterious and entertaining. Even when you thought you had them figured out you realized there was still more to learn. I loved the drama and how not only the characters kept you guessing but so did the plot. I had to continue the journey with the other two books and am not disappointed and would expect that if you gave this a chance you wouldn't be either.

In 9th Life the author creates a fascinating world for the reader -- not too removed from normality at the start, but progressively stranger and increasingly evocative of our animal roots. Without actually saying so, it is a shamanistic romp --partly a developing though unconventional love story, and partly a journey of transformation for the central character / narrator and her "familiar spirit" (metaphorical). The pace is fast at the beginning, slows as the story delves into the evolving consciousness and relationship of the two star actors, then a faster-paced end. There is a multi-threading of thought-trains with dialog technique that I admired, but may be a challenge for some readers. The theme of convergence is strong. The characters are real, vibrant, compelling and form complex dynamic relationships that weather the storms of conflict. I find it holds the reader's attention well and rewards with an alternate reality of depth and passion.

I fell in love with Bastian and Skyler. I needed to know what was in store for them. The best books make me care for the characters and this did. Love the slower build. Every book doesn't have to be full throttle from page 1.
The prologue was interesting and became VERY interesting once you find out what's going on. The rest of the book is not written in that style and reads like a YA/new adult novel. Just what I wanted.
No cliffhanger but a definite path forward. Read the trilogy back to back which is best to stay in the flow of what's going on. It just builds and builds. I have no words for book 2. Holy hell that was exquisite torture. (chef's kiss)

I picked this book up and put it down several times. Each time I did pick it up, I was drawn into the lyrical writing, but I got impatient with what felt like a slow pace and lack of conflict. Bastian seemed like too perfect a hero. Then the book hit its stride, and wow. History, secrets, and magical elements all collide to bring the heroine Skye and the reader along on a strange and powerful journey. I'm now really looking forward to the rest of this series.
