Images of America: Georgia

Georgia's Lighthouses

Rate this book
When British general James Oglethorpe landed on Georgia's coast in 1733, he realized that the success of his new colony, Savannah, depended largely on its establishment and development as a commercial port. Only three years later, in 1736, the first lighthouse was built on Tybee Island. Beginning there at the mouth of the Savannah River, this volume travels down the coast, telling the very different stories of the Cockspur Light, Sapelo Light, St. Simons Light, and Cumberland Light, which is now located on a private island. Rich in history, these lighthouses help to define the story of Georgia's 100-mile coastline. Of the lighthouses built, only five remain today; two are operational lights--Tybee Island and St. Simons Island.

“Georgia’s Lighthouses” is a beautiful, vintage compilation of old photographs of Georgia’s lighthouses. Each lighthouse in Georgia has a distinct look and a unique history that enthralls the lighthouse enthusiast!

My favorite Georgia lighthouse by far, both for its history and beauty is the St. Simon’s Island Lighthouse! The photographs were awe-inspiring. This lighthouse is the icon of the Golden Isles (the cluster of islands located in Southeast Georgia comprising of St. Simon’s Island, Sea Island and Jekyll Island).

The lighthouse with the most unique look is the Sapelo Island Lighthouse, located east of the town of Darien. This lighthouse has a white and red horizontal color pattern and is isolated on its own island. The only way to reach this lighthouse is by taking a ferry from the mainland.

Pick up this book and explore even more wonders from the Georgia coast! 💡🕯🧱🏖🎣🐚🦀🐠
