Shealy James has done it again!
My first experience with her writing style was with Whole Life Re-Do and just like I felt with that story, the connection I had with one character more than any other, I also felt about this story.
Now before I give my review, let me just say that this is a 2nd book in a series and I have not read the first one yet (mainly because I bought it ages ago and I own WAY too many book on my kindle so it’s lost in the shuffle). I went into this book believing that I would have to stop and go back in order to understand. I did not. The way this story is written, you’re given enough that it doesn’t make you feel as though you’re missing a lot.
Maggie and me, we had an insta-connection. Shealy always says in her notes at the end of the book that certain characters are stronger in her mind than others and just like with the previous book I read by her, I see that here again with Maggie. There was not a second in this story where I did not identify or feel for her. She came across surprisingly real to me and it bonded me quite easily to the story. In a sense, this story felt like her coming of age or at least coming in to her own and I enjoyed every second of that.
Parker. I have a love/hate relationship with him. He started out very strong. One of those hero’s that you just want to grip onto tightly and never let go of, but like all humans, he has flaws and things about him that aren’t perfect and it starts to show. His armor begins to crack. Enter the hate portion of our relationship. LOL. His reactions in some situations, the needless yelling at her (when he was on tour the worst by far), I wanted to smack him. Like haul off and punch the shit out of him LOL. That being said, it was also very raw and real so I couldn’t hate him forever. By the time he started communicating with Maggie by email, he had my heart. The end of the story was such a sweet treat in terms of seeing more of him that way as well, but those emails won me over.
Parker I love you man. I want to punch you a bit still, but overall I love you.
I’m probably also the only one that didn’t hate Alexis. She was the female version of one of my most hated characters from my own stories and MAN did I love seeing that. LOL By the end of the book, I got an even better payoff with her and it was worth every second of it.
Now can we just move on to the best part of the book. MAX!!! lmao
I dare you to read this book and not want to grab onto Max and keep him forever. Damn. This is why I said Shealy did it again because just like the previous book I read, her uncanny ability to create these strong and amazing secondary characters blew me away. I have so much love in my heart for that boy. This is the kind of person every single person in the world needs as their best friend.
Absolutely amazing character and such a treat to read about. His heart…no one could touch that.
This is a gripping and real tale of life and the ups and downs we all have, whether on our own or in a relationship and has a lot of coming of age elements that blend perfectly with the romance to make it a killer read. I am so glad I took the time to sit and read this today.
Now I just need to go back and find the first book so I can fall in love all over again. Thank you for creating such a wonderful world Shealy James. 5* + read definitely!
