Sometimes there's a long stretch between good books. And I mean the really good books, the ones that make the drudging through the bad and okay stuff worth it.
I don't always recognize a good book by its cover, but often I sense it when I open it. There's something to the beginning that makes my spine tingle, and I have to take a moment to prepare myself.

In this case, I had to do so especially because it doesn't take a genius to figure out a story that starts with the protagonist trying to kill himself because his lover died in a accident might be a little sad. But it ended up being a lot more emotionally involving and moving and upsetting and touching than I immediately thought.
Some mild spoilers follow: after his suicide attempt the protagonist wakes up in a hospital room - 250 years after he tried to end his life. He is greeted by an android looking vaguely like the love of his life, explaining to him that after he was rescued, his parents used their money to have him frozen so he could be unfrozen once the medical abilities had developed enough to restore him properly to life. They also used their money and influence to ensure he would have the company of an android with the memory of his lover. And that's where the story starts, and a lot of it goes as expected, but some of it doesn't.

It's an excellent manga - it doesn't feel like there's a single word or a single panel too many. I loved it a lot and I'm happy I got to read it. Every once in a while it's good to be reminded of the great stuff that's still out there to be discovered.

Hikaru B sinh ra với sứ mệnh đồng hành và xoa dịu đi tổn thương trong Tora. Và dẫu rằng luôn cố gắng lấy lòng nhưng Tora vẫn chẳng thể nào xoá nhoà được hình ảnh Hikaru người thật trong đầu. Hikaru thật luôn dịu dàng với cậu, còn Hikaru B thì vừa ngốc nghếch lại vụng về, những ký ức quá khứ đan xen với hình ảnh hiện tại càng khiến cậu không thể chấp nhận một người máy thế chỗ cho những ký ức tốt đẹp.

Entelequia - trong tiếng Tây Ban Nha chỉ những điều đẹp đẽ đến nỗi chỉ có thể tồn tại trong mộng tưởng. Trong giấc mộng 250 năm ấy Hikaru sẽ mãi là Entelequia vĩnh cữu trong cậu, cho tới khi Hikaru B xuất hiện...

Tình yêu xuất hiện với muôn vàn dáng vẻ, dù từ những cử chỉ ngốc nghếch vụng về, và dù rằng chỉ là một người máy thay thế bản lỗi, Tora lại một lần nữa mở lòng, chỉ là lần mở lòng này có đôi chút muộn màng...

Having enjoyed THE PRINCE IN HIS DARK DAYS quite a lot I went searching for more by the creator and came upon this...alternately wistful and melancholy story that eventually has an optimistic conclusion.

Told halfway through flashbacks as Tora recounts how he and Hikaru fell in love, the latter half is an examination of what love really is. Tora is resurrected twice - first because of the love his parents had for him and then because of the love Hikaru*B had for him.

In some ways it reminded me of PLANET LADDER - maybe because a lot of time passes, but love is what grounded the various characters the most.

Of course now I'm like "but Tora is still human, he can't live as long as Hikaru*B so what will happen??"

I liked the cover so I was curious what it's about. So not gonna lie, I wasn't really sold in the first few pages. I felt like Hikaru was too idealised--like he's probably a really nice dude and that's why Torao likes him so much, but his death is mentioned on page 1 so we didn't really get to know him. Because of this, I didn't really buy it when Torao jumped from the top of the building just because Hikaru died, you know what I mean? I'm supposed to care because?

But then the manga started pulling the rug from under my feet and doing its own thing and I got hooked. I do have a minor quibble about the worldbuilding (it was an infodump pretty much, but to be fair to the manga, Torao did sleep for a very long time and needed this infodump), but the things I had a problem with turned out to be really strong foundations for the story Yamanaka Hiko wanted to tell. It's not about Hikaru per se, but Hikaru B--a copy of a copy who shone (hehe, pun intended) the most because he's the one we got to spend time with and the imperfect one.

The worldbuilding is there to make the story possible. And I know that sounds like it's been shoehorned in, but it's not. I was fooled at the start but the story got richer the longer I stayed.

There are some really good lines in the book too. The whole bonus track was a bittersweet punch to the gut. I'm not sure why, but it hits different in Japanese.

Honestly I just saw a used copy of this being sold online and it wasn't even marked as BL, but I'm really glad I looked into it because it's easily one of my favourites this year.

His Romance of 500 Years. Kurasa inilah karya terbaik dari semua karya Yamanaka-sensei. *sob sob* Dengan setting di masa depan, kisah ini berangkat dari tema Romeo & Juliet yang dipisahkan oleh kematian. Walaupun begitu, ini adalah kisah cinta antara manusia dan android.

Note : karena aku bacanya versi Chinese raw, so aku tidak tahu apa nama depan Yamada dalam bahasa Jepang, sementara aku juga ragu apakah nama depan Ōta : 光 di sini adalah Hikari (glow) atau Raito (light)...jadi aku akan terus gunakan marga mereka untuk menyebut nama mereka.

Perseteruan keluarga Yamada dan Ōta sudah berlangsung cukup lama. Namun meskipun sekali ini keluarga Yamada lebih kaya dan lebih berpengaruh daripada keluarga Ōta yang miskin, hanya satu hal yang tak dapat ditoleransi ayah Yamada : putra keluarga Ōta lebih unggul dalam dunia pendidikan. Sehingga keluarga Yamada secara khusus mendidik putra tunggal mereka supaya bisa mengalahkan putra keluarga Ōta. Namun semuanya berubah saat kedua putra mereka menjalin cinta ketika di bangku kuliah.

Bagi Yamada, bisa jadian dengan Ōta itu bagaikan mimpi yang jadi kenyataan. Secara selama ini Yamada mengira cintanya tak berbalas. Hubungan mereka mendapat tentangan keras terutama dari ayah Yamada. Yamada sendiri tidak peduli meskipun hubungan mereka tidak disetujui ayahnya dan diusir dari rumahnya karenanya, terutama karena hubungannya dengan ayahnya diperburuk oleh didikan keras ayahnya sedari kecil hingga dewasa.
Karena itulah, suatu hari ketika Yamada mendengar berita kematian Ōta (karena kecelakaan?) di TV, Yamada pun terjun dari atas gedung di tahun 2010 untuk menyusul kekasihnya.

250 tahun kemudian, di tahun 2260 tepatnya, Yamada terbangun di rumah sakit dan mendapati Ōta masih hidup. Namun ia bukanlah Ōta yang asli, Ōta yang ini adalah android yang memiliki memori Ōta yang asli. Dari hologram yang ditunjukkan android Ōta yang namanya Ōta =B= JW2260MCHINA ini, Yamada mendapati bahwa atas permintaan kedua orangtuanya, tubuhnya dibekukan sampai dunia kedokteran bisa menyelamatkan nyawanya kembali. Dan sampai saat ia terbangun dari tidurnya itu, kedua orangtuanya meminta dibuatkan android serupa kekasihnya sehingga putra mereka tidak kesepian ketika terbangun dari tidurnya setelah ratusan tahun berlalu. Orangtuanya sendiri sudah meninggal sejak 200 tahun lalu. T____T
Sebenarnya Yamada sudah bisa dibangunkan dari tidur bekunya pada tahun 2040. Namun pada saat itu dunia belum bisa menciptakan android manusia yang sempurna sehingga tidur bekunya Yamada diperpanjang hingga tahun 2260, saat android untuknya mulai sempurna.

Walaupun Yamada pada awalnya enggan, namun perlahan-lahan ia mulai mau menerima android Ōta di sisinya. Dan dimulailah hari-hari Yamada bersama androidnya di tahun 2260.

Walaupun penampilan luar Android Ōta type B ini mirip dengan Ōta asli, tapi Yamada menyadari bahwa android ini sama sekali berbeda dan malah bisa dibilang jauh lebih tidak sempurna ketimbang aslinya. Ōta yang asli selalu membisikkan "I love you" padanya semasa mereka pacaran, sampai-sampai Yamada protes karena Ōta tidak tulus dan main-main saja karena begitu seringnya Ōta mengucapkannya. Namun Ōta hanya menjawab bahwa ia tulus mengatakannya, dan karena melihat wajah Yamada yang sangat cute ketika mendengar Ōta mengucapkan I love you itu membuat Ōta makin mencintainya. Sehingga ia terus-menerus mengucapkannya. *Me -> swooning*
Tapi, android Ōta sama sekali tidak bisa membedakan apakah Yamada sedang menangis karena bahagia atau sedih... android Ōta juga tidak memiliki ketrampilan seperti Ōta asli. Android Ōta ini sama sekali bukan Ōta, biarpun ia punya memori Ōta.
Walaupun begitu, lambat-laun Yamada mulai jatuh cinta pada android Ōta type B dan ketika ia akhirnya mulai bahagia bersama dengan android Ōta type B, ia harus kembali kehilangan cintanya. T____T

Android Ōta type B digantikan android Ōta =A= JW2260JPN.

WARNING, MAJOR SPOILER. Pokoknya ditanggung resikonya sendiri kalau penasaran dengan isinya. :p Secara cerita yang kututurkan di atas baru separuh bukunya. Masih banyak plot twist yang tak terduga. Tapi aku berusaha supaya tidak membocorkan semuanya.
Ternyata, ada alasan kenapa android Ōta type B itu tidak sempurna dan tidak seperti Ōta asli. Karena android Ōta type B ini adalah android cadangan atau pengganti sementara android Ōta type A disempurnakan hingga bisa 100% mirip Ōta asli.

Lantas kenapa baru diganti sekarang? Itu karena penyempurnaan android Ōta type A ini membutuhkan waktu yang cukup lama. Dari hologram peninggalan android Ōta type B padanya, android Ōta type B menjelaskan bahwa android Ōta type A jauh lebih sempurna darinya, ia menjelaskan bahwa ada alasannya kenapa dia dinamakan MCHINA dan yang type B dinamakan JPN. MCHINA artinya Made in CHINA, dibuat oleh China Block (mungkin ini maksudnya kawasan China, karena di 2260 itu cuma ada 3 negara adikuasa yang tersisa...kalo ga salah ya, soalnya aksaranya rumit bgt, jadi bagian sejarah dunia 2260 itu aku main skip aja... @__@), dan JPN itu dibuat oleh Japan Block. Android Ōta type B ini kebanyakan dibuat untuk berfungsi sebagai tenaga buruh, sedangkan yang type A itu untuk dijadikan teman hidup.

Nah, sampai di sini, apa yang terjadi dengan sisa 250 tahun berikutnya?

Sesuai judulnya : cinta 500 tahun...sekali lagi, Yamada kembali berpisah dengan Ōta...dan kembali dibekukan 250 tahun. T____T Sekali ini, dunia sudah jauh berbeda dengan tahun 2260. Kali ini android serupa manusia sudah digantikan android robot berbentuk kotak. Semacam android hijau botol yang kita kenal itu, hihihi. Apakah hanya sampai di sinikah kisah cinta Yamada dengan android Ōta?
Terakhir, aku bersyukur karena ending-nya tidak seperti karya-karya Yamanaka-sensei yang lain yang punya open ending.

Sayang sekali manga yang satu ini belum diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Tapi aku yakin sekali kalau nantinya bakal ada fans yang mau terjemahin manga ini. Dan aku sangat berharap kalau manga ini bisa dilisensi dalam bahasa Inggris dan diterbitkan dalam bentuk paperback. Pasti kubeli!! :) Cover yang indah, plot cerita yang sangat menarik dan mengharukan, banyak plot twist yang tak terduga...bakalan sering reread yang satu ini. Langsung jadi favoritku. :)

พระเอกตื่นจากสภาพกึ่งตายในโลกอีก 250 ปีให้หลัง ที่เทคโนโลยีแอนดรอยด์ก้าวหน้าถึงขั้นต้องตั้งคำถามว่าเราควรมองแอนดรอยด์เสมือนเพื่อนมนุษย์หรือไม่ เมื่อปมแรกของเขาคือการที่เขาได้ฆ่าตัวตายตามคนรักที่เสียชีวิตไปเพราะหมดความหมายในการมีชีวิตอยู่ แม้ทีแรกพ่อของเขาจะต่อต้านการเป็นเกย์ของเขา แต่หลังจากที่เขาอยู่ในสภาพกึ่งตาย ทั้งพ่อและแม่ก็ได้ให้ของขวัญที่น่าเหลือเชื่อแก่เขา ไม่เพียงแต่ทุ่มทุนแช่แข็งลูกชายจนกว่าเทคโนโลยีจะก้าวหน้า ยังซื้อแอนดรอยด์ที่เป็นตัวแทนคนรักที่ตายไปให้อยู่เป็นเพื่อนลูกด้วย ในวันที่เขาตื่นขึ้นมาอีกครั้งเขาก็ไม่ได้นอนอย่างโดดเดี่ยวอีกต่อไป ไม่ว่าเขาจะยึดติดกับคนรักเดิมหรือจะเดินหน้าต่อนั้น ความสัมพันธ์ของเขาและแอนดรอยด์ก็ค่อยๆพัฒนาขึ้น

เราได้เห็นความรักอันเรียบง่ายระหว่างตัวเอกทั้งสองที่เป็น LGBTQ+ เหมือนดูหนังโรแมนติกไซไฟ ที่มีความหน่วงและอิ่มใจในขณะเดียวกัน ซึ่งก็ไม่ได้คาดหวังความสมจริงนักเพราะมันโฟกัสไปที่ความสัมพันธ์ของตัวละครมากกว่า ปูทางมาสู่การที่พระเอกต้องออกตามหาแอนดรอยด์ แม้เวลาจะบวกไปอีก 250 ปี เขาก็ยังมีความหวัง เราบอกไม่ได้ว่าพระเอกจะได้เจอกับหุ่นอีกหรือไม่ แต่สุดท้ายแล้วก็หวังว่าเขาจะเจอความหมายในการมีชีวิตอยู่ต่อไป

A bittersweet story. Make sure to read the one-off extra to get the full picture. The storyline has a a lot of potential, but with how short the piece was and the manner in which the story was told, I felt that we didn’t have enough time to really get invested in or develop the characters. It’s still a good piece - I just think it could have been amazing if we had more time.

The art style matches the mood of the story. It’s a bit messy and whimsical, hard to grasp sometimes. Because it’s a one shot, you’re left with many unanswered questions...I wonder what happened to the two MCs afterwards.

Erh, viết viễn tưởng 500 năm và tới 2 mốc thời gian khác nhau trong tương lai mà chỉ vỏn vẹn trong một cuốn truyện tranh là quá tham vọng, nên rốt cuộc xây dựng cái gì cũng nửa vời. Chưa nói đến các chi tiết viễn tưởng thì kể cả mối quan hệ giữa mấy nhân vật chính cũng hời hợt, thoắt giận thoắt yêu chóng cả mặt. Thêm nét vẽ cũng thiếu chau chuốt không cứu vớt được gì nữa.
Cho 3- sao vì cái ý tưởng.

Tình cảm vốn là thứ khó lòng buông xuống được. Được đáp lại hay không được đáp lại, vẫn cứ như vậy, chân thành mà yêu.
Tora tỉnh dậy đã là 250 năm sau, người cậu ấy yêu cũng hoàn toàn tan biến mất. Nhưng lại có một người máy tên là Hikaru B bên cạnh, hắn nói, hắn sẽ chăm sóc cậu.

Bảo cậu quên đi, sao mà có thể chứ. Tình cảm đó tận sâu trong tim, huống gì, Hikaru là tất cả đối với cậu. Cậu thực sự rất đau lòng, dù nỗi đâu ấy đã được đóng băng 250 năm. Hắn lại nói
“Cậu khóc sao, Tora?
Cậu đang vui, hay đang buồn?”

Hắn nói “Tôi yêu cậu.”

Tora liền nhớ đến, thật lâu thật lâu trước đây, có một Hikaru bằng xương bằng thịt, cũng dịu dàng nói với cậu 3 từ ấy. Mỗi khi cậu cáu gắt, người đó cũng chỉ mỉm cười nói thêm “Tora khó hiểu thật đấy. Nhưng mà… tôi vẫn yêu cậu.”

Người máy Hikaru B chỉ giống 30% của Hikaru, làm việc gì cũng chả khéo léo, gọt táo cũng không bằng. Nhưng mà, hắn lại dùng hết tâm tư để cậu được vui, dùng hết tất cả thiết bị máy móc trên cơ thể, chỉ để hi vọng rằng, Tora, người tái sinh ra hắn sẽ thật hạnh phúc.

Cái câu “Tôi yêu cậu” không phải chỉ để nói ra vậy thôi. Một người máy phiên bản lỗi như thế, đã dùng tất cả các dữ liệu, chỉ để ghi nhớ về một người. Dùng hết khả năng mình có để bảo vệ một người. Hình ảnh Hikaru B ngồi chăm chỉ gọt táo chỉ để đẹp như Tora mong muốn làm tôi liền nghĩ.

Đúng vậy, nếu người đó thật tâm yêu bạn, bạn chỉ cần là bạn mà thôi.

Tôi cũng biết, khi Hikaru A xuất hiện, một phiên bản hoàn thiện và gần như giống hệt Hikaru, vì sao Tora lại từ chối. Có lẽ, ở bên cạnh một người không hoàn hảo nhưng họ cố gắng dành tất cả những gì hoàn hảo nhất cho bạn, tốt hơn nhiều ở bên cạnh một phiên bản hoàn hảo đang cố hoàn thành tốt nhiệm vụ được giao.

Có một người thực tâm quan tâm cậu như thế, một người muốn biết cậu vui hay buồn, không phải xuất phất từ nhiệm vụ hay một sự phân công nào cần phải được hoàn thành, trái tim cậu cũng vừa chớm lấp đi một lỗ hỏng.


“Thật tốt vì chúng tôi đã cùng chìm vào giấc ngủ. Phải trải qua giấc ngủ dài, cũng như chờ đợi. Nếu chỉ có một mình thì cô đơn lắm.”

Vậy là lại qua 250 năm. Tỉnh dậy một giấc, đã không còn Hilkaru B bên cạnh nữa. Vậy nên, Tora phải đi tìm cậu ấy, nhất định phải tìm thấy cậu ấy.

“Tôi muốn dốc sức làm điều gì đó cho cậu, bởi tôi yêu cậu.”

May mắn thay, cậu ấy cũng kiên nhẫn ở nơi đó, chờ cậu xuất hiện.

“Con người quả là sinh vật đầy mâu thuẫn. Nhưng chính sự mâu thuẫn đó lại là vẻ đẹp của đời người.”

Mong rằng, dù cậu một mình đi qua chặng đường dài của tháng năm không đếm xuể, một lúc nào đó ngẩng đầu, có người tình nguyện trao tất cả dịu dàng họ có, cho riêng một mình cậu mà thôi.

โลกในยุคนั้น มนุษย์มีความสามารถด้านการแพทย์และหุ่นยนต์ แอนดรอยด์กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชีวิตคน
