4 and ½ Stars! French Noblewoman Abducted by a Highland Chief
First released under the title Falcon on the Wind, the story is set in Scotland in 1294 and tells of Lady Laurien d’Amboise, whose step father would force her to wed the cruel comte de Villiers. She is just about to escape when she is abducted by Highland lord Darach of Glenshiel who needs her to secure France’s support for Scotland.
Laurien thought to return to the convent at Tours where she grew up but that was before Darach captured her heart. Little does she know he is already married. And that won’t stop Darach from claiming what he wants.
A clever plot with a twist toward the end and some good action scenes keeps the reader turning pages. I enjoyed the characters and anytime I can get a bit of the Highlands in the story, I’m delighted. There are a few historical references that anchor the story well in Scotland’s history.
Full of adventure but the pacing was slow at times. Takes place in France then in Scotland. A road trip of sorts. The hero got injured and the heroine nursed him for three days. He has a beard and a soft mat of hair on his chest. 😁 OW causing trouble in the latter half. The hero was betrayed by his wife and older brother. Thus, he doesn’t believe in love. By the end of the book, the heroine finally learns who her real father is. I like that her younger brother came to her rescue, too. I was a little disappointed in the main villain. He’s so cruel and menacing that I assumed that he could fight during a combat with the hero, but nope! He tries to escape with the heroine while his hired mercenary fights the hero. Lame.
4.5 stars! His Stolen Bride (originally pub’d as Falcon on the Wind in 1991) was so good! This is a medieval historical romance and has captor x captive vibes because the hero abducts the heroine on her wedding day. This was actually my 2nd read from this author and I had so much fun with this one more than the previous book I read.
You can find His Stolen Bride on KU and that is the version I read. This is directly from the author’s website: Originally published under the title Falcon on the Wind. This extensively revised Author’s Preferred Edition ebook includes new scenes never before published.
This is a medieval and takes places in 1293/1294, we start off in Scotland, go to France, and eventually come back to Scotland. I was hooked from the story right from the start! We follow Sir Darach of Glenshiel, a Scottish hero who desperately wants to save his homeland and needs the French king’s support against England so he goes to France and abducts the heroine Laurien who is about to marry the king’s cousin. He just wants to keep her for a couple weeks and ransom her for the support he needs for his country. We see early on that Laurien is not wanting to marry her betrothed, she was in an abbey in France for over a decade before her stepfather brought her out and told her she’s due to marry the king’s cousin. A man who is more than twice her age, has been married twice before (his last wife died just 3 months prior after a suspicious fall), is known to have violent mood swings, and regularly imports/uses opium poppy. She’s definitely not looking forward to marrying that man to say the least and tells Darach she has zero plans to return after he abducts her. Things get complicated from there and I loved seeing the reasons behind Darach’s motivations, how family plays a role in his story, and seeing Laurien’s brother and some revelations as well.
I’m just in the mood for these old school historical romances right now and this one absolutely delivered on what I loved. Action and adventure right from the start, the drama, it was super fun, had really sweet/romantic moments, and I just loved each of the character’s backstory and family history!
In desperation, seeking to obtain an alliance with France in their battle with England, Lord Darach of Glenshiel undertakes a mission to abduct the betrothed of the French King’s most favoured adviser who has been demanding hefty bribes to not oppose the treaty. Demand after bigger demand which the Scots neither have the resources nor the time to pay. Knowing how much the Comte wants the marriage the Scots hope to turn the tables on him by kidnapping his bride in return for his promise to ensure the alliance proceeds.
Sent by her stepfather when only 9 years old to a convent after her mother dies, Laurien only wants to immerse herself in her studies and has decided to take her vows to be a nun but in the space of a few short days she is taken away and finds herself to be married to a vile man who abuses her when she tries to object.
When Laurien is abducted from beneath her betrothed's nose by a brawny highlander, all she wants is to escape & make her way back to the convent. Spirited and intelligent she gives Darach no end of trouble by refusing to be cowed by him (he never expected a meek convent breed girl to leap out of a window to escape!). She wasn't irritating or blindly stubborn but quietly determined to escape being married to the Comte.
I admit I love the captive/hostage trope & the author has written a captivating and entertaining story with 2 wonderful characters. The sexual tension that develops is lovely. The story moves quickly and there's lots of action interspersed with the romance. The only complaint I have is that I felt the author put too many subplots into the story; which all resolved conveniently at the end. Too many coincidences which made the story less plausible. Otherwise a wonderful read.
This is a medieval romance set in the year 1295 Lady Laurien d’Amboise finds herself removed from the convent where she has grown up and planned to take her vows and forced into a betrothal with Comte Jacques de Villiers a French noble and cousin to the king. The Comte is an awful abusive man and Laurien definitely doesn’t want the match hoping to somehow flee her fate and claim sanctuary back at the convent but before she can act herself she is instead unexpectedly liberated and kidnapped from her own wedding her fate now to be used as a bargaining tool to force the Comte’s hand.
Sir Darach of Glensheil along with Sir Malcolm of Maclennan are the Scotsmen charged with Laurien’s abduction they expected a meek docile innocent instead they are faced with a lass filled with fire and an unexpected grit and What started out for Darach as just a simple job is becoming so much more complicated as the more time he spends around Laurien the deeper he falls under her spell. But with the fate of his people resting firmly on his shoulders Darach knows he can’t afford to get attached no matter how guilty he is now starting to feel.
This was a very easy read the pace was fast and it’s very well written. I loved that Laurien wasn’t some meek yes girl she had strength and this girl definitely had a backbone of pure steel she’s also very resilient and even with the shitstorm her life’s becoming she managed to retain her compassion and integrity but without becoming a doormat.
Darach is very much a man of his times he likes to give orders not that Laurien listens and I think he was secretly impressed by the way Laurien stands her ground refusing to be intimidated or cowed and he greatly admires her internal fire. He’s a scarred battle-weary warrior with a sad past and a deep-seated need to atone for past mistakes. He’s definitely a bit rough and around the edges and he does try super hard to fight his intense feelings knowing they only complicate the entire situation.
This had so much danger passion and intrigue It stretches all the way from France back to Darachs home shores of Scotland. There were some twists but I did kinda guess the biggest one quite early on though it didn’t spoil my appreciation any. Overall this was a great read and I enjoyed it a lot I’ll definitely now be continuing on with this series further.
This was fun! I do think the first half was a bit slow when he kidnapped her and took him back to where he lived. I would have loved more of a Scottish keep feel to the plot. The second half, though, is where a ton of the action and drama came in, which I really enjoyed!
The first half of the book was very hectic, with a lot of fighting scenes, running away, blade waving. The relationship between lead characters takes a back seat in the first half. The author spent a lot of pages describing why they were where they were and not enough time (for my taste) to illustrate the relationship. I had trouble picturing Darach in my mind. Too many words about everything and everyone that is around the lead characters but not enough about the lead characters. I went through the first half quickly.
In the second half things picked up. The relationship was on the stage. Both Darach and Laurien are likeable characters. It made me happy to read about the time they spent together. I have no problem with the fact that Darach is "married" with a son. His marital status is, in Facebook lingo, "complicated". But such things don't bother me so much as long as I am convinced that the lead characters truly care for each other. Shxt happens in life and you count yourself lucky when you get a chance to make things better.
I feel that the plot is very simple, with a lot of unnecessary secondary characters and plot twists. It is basically Darach kidnapping Laurien and planning on returning her to her evil betrothed after the political situation had been rectified. Evil betrothed came after Laurien and Darach must decide what to do with Laurien. To return her means his heartbreak and to keep her means the downfall of Scotland.
The story does not feel very Scottish. Some plots with great potential were described minimally whereas politics and warring were written about in rather great length. Overall an OK read. I would say 40% of it was really intense and wonderful reading. The rest is rather uninteresting but necessary to build the story. I like the 40% a lot and would have given 4 stars if I was only rating that. But I have read pretty good stories which do deserve 4 stars and this story kind of fall short, which is a real shame because I like Darach and Laurien a lot as a couple.
His Stolen Bride is a "Keeper" Very engrossing and exciting fast paced storyline!! I will be re reading His Stolen Bride again an again through the years.
It is the year 1295 and Lady Laurien d'Amboise has been rushed from her Tours a convent she was raised in since 9yrs. old. by her step father Louie d'Amboise. Louie has arranged Laurien's marriage to the King of France's cousin Compte Jacques de Villers, and evil opium addicted foul man. Jacque has obviously been responsible for the deaths of his first two wife. Laurien refuses to marry him so he beats her and makes her come to the wedding. Laurien prayers are answered in an unexpected way.
Sir Darach of Glenshiel is determine to get revenge for the trap that was sent set up by the English King Edward. In the trap and insuring battle his brother Galen is killed. Darach has joined with other Scots into the Auld Alliance to stop the invasion of the English into Scotland. They need help from France and when that help is not fast in coming they devise a scheme to kidnap Laurie from the Compte to force him to rush negotiations with his cousin the French King.
Darach pucks Laurien off her horse right in the middle of the wedding precession. From there the adventures begins. The Hot Sexy, Sensuous Romance also, begins. The Romance between Darach and Laurien proceeds at mild pace, not to fast. It evolves in perfect timing with the intrigue of the story. The story is full of action which had me seating on the edge of my seat at time. All the characters even the horrible villains of the story are well develop. There a quite a few major surprises in the story and many twist and turns. Overall this was really well done Medieval Gothic Romance. I really enjoyed it. I Highly Recommend His Stolen Bride!! You won't regret reading this one.
Darach is a mercenary from Scotland fighting the English and his brother Galen dies in an ambush. So Darach and Malcolm another Scots come up with a plan on how to get the King of France's support. Kidnap the Comte Jacques de Villiers bride Lady Laurien. Lauren has lived in a convent for 9 years and does not want to marry. Comte Villiers hits her and she decides to escape, but she is taken first. I don't wait to tell everything about the book it would spoil and ruin it for you before you read it. I really hope you will decide to give this book a chance it has about everything you can think of adventure, romance, plots and secrets to find alone the way.
I really loved this book, I can't wait for Shelly Thacker's next book.
This is the first book I have read from Shelly Thacker. And it really is quite good. I appreciate that there are no sub plots and introduction to sequels. The pacing of the storyline was just right. It has a lot of adventure and a lot of romance. The sex scenes are mildly described (compared to other books I have read).
The big, strong and honorable hero has a past and it has tortured him for ten years. Then he meets the kindhearted, courageous and innocent heroine. It is a story of an abduction where the heroine falls in love with her captor (the hero) through all their adventures and misadventures together. Of course, the hero also falls in love with the heroine. It really is a book that has an authentic love story and connection among its characters.
This book was a chore to read. It just went on & on & on... The events were redundant, the plot predictable, and the characters boring. I quit reading it several times, because it just wasn't a good story, but felt I owed it to the author to finish. I wish I had those hours of my life back. I just cannot understand all of the five-star reviews.
Shelly's writing paints each scene with a life-like touch. Sexy Highlanders, dangerous perils, seemingly insurmountable obstacles, heartbreak, and suspense galore keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Add in a sweet and steamy romance and you've got a splendid, well-balanced tale.
It had seemed entirely sensible at the time. A simple way to test the truth of her claim that she had lain with de Villiers. To show her that lying to him was useless. To make a point. Instead, he had ignited a desire that burned him like none he had ever felt before. He had expected Lady Laurien d'Amboise to be a timid little convent mouse. Quiet and passive and pliant. Easily manageable. Instead she was outspoken and strong-willed...and stunning in a way he could not even describe. An innocent beauty caught up in a deadly game that was none of her making.... Malcolm rose to leave, chuckling. "And what is there to laugh about?" Darach gave his jovial friend a dour look. Malcolm stopped just long enough to do his best imitation of Darach. "'Simple. Kidnap one French lass, hold her for a fortnight, and return her to de Villiers after he meets our demands. Perfectly simple.'"
HIS STOLEN BRIDE by Shelly Thacker is a superb addition to Shelly's Stolen Brides series. I have previously listened to and reviewed two books from this series: HIS FORBIDDEN TOUCH (http://www.readingbetweenthewinesbook...) and HIS CAPTIVE BRIDE (http://www.readingbetweenthewinesbook...), with 5 Wine Glass ratings for both. I enjoyed them and Shelly's writing so much that I absolutely had to pre-order this one and start reading it on the day it was released. I just couldn't wait to delve into it and I wasn't disappointed. The story was a delicious treat, well-paced with plenty of action and swoon-worthy scenes.
Unfortunately, HIS STOLEN BRIDE hasn't been released in audio yet - though I have read that it will be later this year. I just couldn't wait, so this is actually the first Shelly Thacker book that I've read instead of listened to. I am happy to report that while I missed Julia Motyka's narration, it was still a most delightful read.
Each of the books in this series can be thoroughly enjoyed as a standalone as the romantic relationships and the development of the plot are fully contained within each of the installments.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the cover - the lovely model, the view, the plaid, the sky, the castle all illustrated in such beautiful, vivid colors - caught and held my eye and my imagination.
Blurb: She’s kidnapped on the morning of her royal wedding—by her groom’s most dangerous enemy...

Darach I loved him, he could be a brute but there were times where he was like a teddy bear, "rolling onto his side, he drew her close. “Sleep, milady. I will keep you warm tonight, and safe.” He pulled the blanket over her, wrapping one arm around her waist as he settled beside her on the furs. “And for one night, at least, neither of us will be alone.” I loved how at ease and playful he could be, “however,” Darach amended, “I suppose we must have nourishment if I am to keep up my—” He flashed her a wicked grin. “—strength.” I loved how protective he was, “I wish him no harm.” He mounted his horse. “But no man will take you from me again. Not even your brother.” He reached down a hand to her." I enjoyed this book there was love and adventure.
Filled with everything I love about reading romance
This book is filled with everything I love about reading romance. It had an exciting and entertaining story that had me riveted to the end and transported to another time in history, interesting characters that I thoroughly loved and enjoyed, an evil villain and of course a wonderful passionate romance between a beautiful and brave heroine and a handsome, sexy strong hero. Laurien was kind, innocent and brave and I admired her greatly and I loved how Laurien would stand up to Darach even when she was afraid when he first kidnapped her. Darach was a hero who suffered from a mistrust of women and with good reason. This is one story that will stick with me for a long time to come and I recommend it highly.
Enjoyed the book very much. Lady Laurien d'Amboise is to be wed today, but not f her choosing. Her stepfather she has not seen in nine had given her no time to object and little time to say farewell to students, novices, and nuns who had truly been like sisters to her for eleven years. She was hopping the the wedding could be stopped. On the way to the church she was kidnapped by a Scotsman. This was not the way she had planed it.
For the most part I liked this book and all of its characters. Darach's character was Highland hero, but besides being very protective I did not get a Highlander feel. Lauren's character was written well. I read the excerpt for book two. I don't care for time travel. I was hoping the series would be a story for Henri.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the plot and the relationship between the main characters. It did get a little long, but I'm looking forward to the other books in the series.
To be clear this is 3.5 stars. Based on what I’ve ranked other books this year, it’s better than the 3s but not quite a 4! This was a nice one: good slow-ish burn romance, had a pretty high stakes plot, likable characters etc. Was it the most beautifully written romance I’ve ever read? No. Did it do the trick? Yes.
ROSE 🌹: HIGH STAKES, ROMANCE, HISTORICALLY ACCURATE DIALOGUE/PERSPECTIVES
I think the stakes in this book really made it for me, because even when Laurien and Darach were having these romantic moments- there was still the future of her betrothed coming to take her back. I like the whole plot line of the stolen bride as well - I thought it was well done without a Stockholm Syndrome vibe.
I don’t know if I would classify this as a “slow-burn” persay but it definitely wasn’t insta-love which was nice. I liked both Laurien and Darach (although they both had annoying moments), and felt invested in their romance.
I’m not saying this book was historically accurate in terms of plot, but what I did really like is that the dialogue/character perspectives didn’t take me out of the plot. I hate when authors build this great medieval world, and then the characters say these weirdly modern things or have weirdly modern attitudes. I’m a feminist, but you gotta expect a little misogyny in historical romance people!
THORN 🗡️: COVER, PACING, POV SWITCHES
I’m sorry I hate to say this but… the cover is awful. I understand that there’s likely not a huge budget for this book, but I could whip something up using Instagram story stickers that’s better than this! It’s so weirdly photoshopped! I would prefer a shirtless man!
The pace was a little off towards the end of the book. I feel like too many things were jammed into the last ten percent. I also really hated the twist at the end (no not that twist - the other one) - it was super predictable and felt very unneeded.
I don’t mind the POV switching between Laurien and Darach - I like it that way actually. But the random side character POVs that we’re thrown in were super weird? Why do we have this random soldier who wants to kill Darach’s POV? It could have the same effect from Darach’s our perspective?
BUD 🌷: MAYBE WILL COME BACK TO THIS SERIES?
I’m not into the book in this series that’s about time travel, but I might try the other ones. I wish the covers were better though!!! I promise the covers do not accurately portray the writing!!
It's been a while since I read a historical set in the 1200s. It was an interesting read and I liked it but the ending was abrupt. It's like when you're really tired and you're reading your fifth bedtime story of the night to your should-be-asleep kid and instead of reading the last half you just rush a paraphrased version of the story. That last chapter just went through and tied up all the loose ends. It was like an epilogue when the story wasn't finished. And I guessed who her daddy was by the second chapter so that wasn't a surprise. Overall, Would recommend. How I rate a story. (In order of importance): Does it keep my attention? 🌟 Yes, for the most part I was interested in the plot Is it plausible / logical? 🌟 Yes, although some times they repeated the same mistake, it was logical. Grammatical errors or odd, repetitive language? 🌟 not really, nothing that kept me from enjoying the book. Do I like the characters? 🌟 for the most part yes, they were enjoyable but a bit gullible. All in all - A Good Read - 3.5 stars. 🌟 🌟 🌟 There are very few stories that I'll give a 1 star. If I finished reading it then it had to be "ok".
This was a pleasant read. It was an action packed adventure/ travel love story. This had all the ingredients that call my name: plot heavy, romance, strong leads and a medieval setting. I can’t explain why this isn’t a five star read for me. It’s not really even something I would re read. I contemplated 3.5 stars for that reason. The villains were very “muahaha” and predictable. I dislike the trope of the jealous woman spurned by the hero who joins forces with lead evil guy. Evan a was such a stereotype: fickle, overly sexualized and evil for evils sake. Any female character who wasn’t the lead was loathsome. The heroine on the other hand was great. Not a withering rose but decisive and active. One great moment was when she outmanoeuvres Balafre but drugging him but in the process drugs herself. Connor is mad at her after she saves him (again) and he is expressing his annoyance when she passes out from accidentally drugging herself. The father reveal was very predictable. It was good. It gave Julie Garwood vibes but just didn’t have those gripping scenes that make you giddy and require a re read.
Can you change your mind? Laurien just wants to go back to the nuns but her future has been taken away from her and she will live the rest of her life as a wife to a evil man. But before that happens she is kidnapped by a scotsman and he needs her to save his family & friends. Darach had no choice he has to take her but he never knew that she would be such trouble. She tries to escape numerous of times and she almost gets them killed and yet he still won't let her go. She doesn't want to leave anymore she has fallen for this man that will break her and she knows that he is going to fight her every step of the way. Darach knows that the time has come to let Laurien go as she doesn't deserve to be happy even though it has been so long since he has ever loved a woman, he is going to miss her something fierce but he can't allow her to be unhappy by making her stay. Can they both get through this journey together or will they both lose their chance at happiness? A great story that has a great flow to it and keeps you turning those pages.
Well, because this will be one of the last book I read this year, the clock says after midnight and the date is 31/12 2021 so I will be generous and give this author 3 stars even though the lack of sex, because mentioning that they had sex after having me waiting for nearly 15 chapters before that happened is just awful to read, seriously. I wanted something worth the wait but all the author did was down cast the whole thing and it felt so unromantic, in a way that made me irritated enough to skip a few chapters.
But as I said, the last day of this year (hope it will never come back again, this 2021) is today so I'm happy enough to let the author think her work is worth much more than what it is, which is little if you ask me.
Now, was the sexy (not) part the only thing that broke this book? No, there was more things but I won't go into details about it. As I said, HAPPY NEW YEAR 😊
Laurien, a novitiate in a convent in Tours is suddenly removed to be married. Laurien becomes a pawn in the negotiations to form an alliance between France and Scotland when she is stolen by Darach Glenshiel and Malcolm MacClennan on her way to her wedding to a man she doesn't even know (except that he is abusive, nearly choking her when they first meet).
Thus begins this historical romance of a reluctant bride who tangles with a Scottish warrior. She is beautiful and feisty; he is aloof and handsome. She only wants to escape and return to the convent. He only wants to secure the alliance, but will they come to respect each other? Will they come to love each other or will the comte de Villiers (and his soldiers) finally find her?
A few twists and turns, and not too many What-the-tuck trends.
I received this book free from one of the book sites. I do not remember which one! This is my honest and voluntary review.
This book is written by an author who knows how to write! Descriptive, beautiful details will have you smiling and sighing in delight; fear and rage will cause shivers through the body. I have read about some obsessive villains, but this one is pretty bad.
This is explicit, but not done in a manner that will disgust. The scenes have a sweetness about them. They are well written. Well done.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great romance with drama and mystery.
Wonderful mix of history and romance with a smart, spirited heroine
So happy to have discovered Shelly Thacker (via Glynnis Campbell cross author promotion!); I've become an instant fan. Solid history of a place and time and the countries battle for territory and the impact on everyday lives. H and h well drawn, strong but mature personalities, flawed but honorable at core, and deserving of each other and their happiness. Lady Laurienne is the heroine you want your daughters to model on.
FMC has been arranged to marry and deranged and abusive lord. On the day of her wedding, the MMC kidnaps her whilst she is being brought to the church for her wedding
MMC wants revenge due to the war and his younger brother being killed years ago, and needs to use FMC as leverage
Cant remember much but MMC and FMC start to get intimate as they journey to his home land. MMC struggles as he wants her but is thinking about the ultimate goal of his revenge. FMC starts to fall for him but doesn’t trust him as she doesn’t want to go back to her abusive intended groom
