Ο Ινδός Τζαγκάτ Ράι έδωσε όρκο να εξολοθρευτεί και ο τελευταίος απόγονος του Άγγλου συνταγματάρχη Μιλς.

Έναν αιώνα αργότερα, ο δισέγγονος του συνταγματάρχη, ο Φίλιπ, στρατιωτικός και ο ίδιος, για να αποφύγει το σκάνδαλο που δημιουργεί ο παράνομος δεσμός του, παντρεύεται την Τζέιν και φεύγει για την Ινδία.

Παρ' όλο που αψηφά την κατάρα, η τύχη του είναι ήδη προδιαγεγραμμένη: θα δολοφονηθεί μαζί με την ερωμένη του, η οποία στο μεταξύ είχε χωρίσει και τον είχε ακολουθήσει.

Ο Ράμες Ράι, που υποχρεώνεται από τον παππού του να τηρήσει τον όρκο των προγόνων του, πλησιάζει την Τζέιν με σκοπό να την παρασύρει και να την ενοχοποιήσει για το θάνατο του συζύγου της.

Η μοίρα, όμως, έχει αποφασίσει διαφορετικά. Έτσι, ένα παράφορος έρωτας θα γεννηθεί ανάμεσά τους, ένας έρωτας που θα τους φέρει αντιμέτωπους με τη κατάρα. Ο αγώνας τους να γλυτώσουν αποδεικνύεται μάταιος, καθώς η Τζέιν θα πεθάνει φέρνοντας στον κόσμο τον καρπό της αγαπης τους, την Ίντου, και ο Ράμες θα αυτοκτονήσει μην μπορώντας να ζήσει χωρίς εκείνη.

Ο γιατρός που τους βοήθησε φυγαδεύει την Ίντου και τη στέλνει στον παππού της, στην Αγγλία.

Η κατάρα, όμως, συνεχίζεται...

J'ai choisi ce livre malgré le résumé pas forcément super car je voulais lui laisser une chance puisque j'aime beaucoup tout ce qui se passe en Inde.
Ce fut une bonne surprise car l'histoire était bien mieux que ce que le résumé laissait imaginer (il faut dire, il n'est vraiment pas top, ce résumé...). Les sentiments des personnages sont un peu rapides à évoluer, ils tombent un peu amoureux sans qu'on ait de réelle évolution, mais cela ne nuit pas à l'histoire globale car il se passe trop de choses pour qu'on puisse s'attarder sur chaque couple du livre.
Bref, une bonne surprise et je recommande le livre.
