Kellan She’s gone. And I don’t care. At least that’s what I tell myself, but she also left me with a really big mess to clean up. My siblings hate me. As they should. I may be twenty-four, but no part of me feels up to the task of taking care of my four younger siblings. I barely have my life under control, but it doesn’t matter now. I have temporary custody, and I’m going to do everything I can to make sure it’s not only permanent, but also the best thing for these kids.
Phillip I haven’t been a social worker long, but I already know, without a doubt, this case has the ability to break me. Four minors left with their oldest brother—a brother still fighting with addiction and so much bitterness, it’s stifling. But I won’t give up on them like the rest of society. No matter what, I’m going to find a way to make sure this arrangement isn’t merely temporary—I just need to make sure I don’t lose my head or my heart in the process.
Nicole Dykes is a wife and a professional assistant/mom to two gorgeous girls. Currently residing in Kansas, she’s a lover of coffee, Kansas City Chiefs, and all things romance.
She's found her passion in writing M/M romance because love is love is love. Some popular works include Hostile, The Spark of Hope Series, and The Kensley Panthers Series!
This was my first book by the author and while it wasn’t perfect, it got me. It’s messy and emotional and full of people just trying to figure their shit out - and I loved that about it.
What stood out most to me was how real the character development felt across the board. Kellan’s journey - being completely overwhelmed, trying his best but still fucking up here and there - was incredibly relatable. Phillip, meanwhile, was so compelling in his self-awareness. He knows he has a saviour complex, and he doesn’t shy away from acknowledging how toxic that can be. We love a self-reflective king.
The portrayal of the kids was also a major highlight for me. There was no sugar-coating or magical instant forgiveness; they were prickly, distrustful, resentful, and deeply shaped by everything they’d been through. It made the family dynamics raw and believable and their emotional arcs feel earned and powerful.
I also really appreciated how addiction was handled - there was a lot of nuance in how the story explored the emotional aftermath of growing up with a parent who struggled. It wasn’t just about trauma, but about the complicated love, guilt, and longing that can come with it. That part felt incredibly layered and moving.
And then there’s the romance. The chemistry between Phillip and Kellan was gorgeous - charged and intimate and full of that forbidden tension. But I have to admit, I would’ve liked a bit more buildup when it came to Kellan’s shift in attraction. He went from I’m pretty sure I’m straight but somehow I think he’s beautiful; huh, I wonder what’s that all about?’, to ’I need to kiss him right now or I’ll die and oh btw I’m all fucking in!’ pretty fast. I would have loved a bit more push and pull and yearning and careful exploration.
One element I’m still not sure about is how Kellan relentlessly pursued (pushed?) Phillip. There’s a fine line between ‘aw I love how he goes for what he wants’ and ‘no actually means no, you dick’ and this book toed the line there for a while.
That said, I couldn’t put this down. I really enjoyed the themes and the writing and I absolutely adored this cast. Tatum especially completely stole my heart, and I’m beyond excited for his and Remy’s story next. The fact that we’re also getting Cason’s and Liam’s book? Yes please and thank you. I’ll be following this series closely.
Thank you to GRR for the chance to read this ARC, this is my honest opinion!
Really enjoyed this one! It didn't feel realistic in any way, but the connections between the characters developed and grew so nicely that it was impossible to not feel hopeful for their outcome.
Kellan was a really interesting character and he had to take on so much when he didn't really have much of a clue what to do or how to do it. Seeing his growth and his confidence developing as he settled into the role of guardian for his four younger siblings was really enjoyable to see. Philip was literally the sweetest do good character I've read in a really long time, and his dedication was really cute, even though it was ethically concerning!
I loved the support Kellan received from his best friend Tatum too, and the way these characters are all working towards becoming a family, even though the kids don't really know what to do with their emotions.
I'd actually love a book for Cason in the future...

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review
The story had an interesting setting, developing a love story between a guy wanting to get custody of his younger siblings trapped in the foster care system and the social worker who's assigned to their case.
Even though this book has some serious topics, it's really not that heavy. It's basically pretty light and the characters don't get to experience too much drama on-page, and even if they do, the pacing is fairly fast and you don't get as much heartache.
🟢 A mechanic / a social worker 🔵 Age gap 24 / 26 🟣 Size difference 🟡 Gay / bi-awakening 🔵 Forbidden (unethical) relationship 🟢 I like the NSFW cover 🟠 Addiction 🌶️ Good sex, first times; oral, penetrative, rimming; t/b
Kellan is a former addict from a single mother home who was also an addict. He left home when he was 20 years old, wanting to get away and get better, so at present he's living in a small, rundown house with his best friend Tatum and he's just finding out his junkie mother died, so his past comes running in and makes Kellan face his four younger siblings he's left behind.
The kids are traumatized and untrusting, but Kellan really wants to make it work, so he's really trying with the help of Phillip, their social worker.
The romance had a cute start, some sweet tension and good sex, but also a very predictable development.
Kellan and Phillip are meeting up in secret, they get found out, third act break-up and then Phillip does a completely unlogical thing and quits their case mere months before Kellan gets that guardianship and it seemed a bit ridiculous and stupid, I mean couldn't they have waited a few months more? Getting another social worker on their case could've meant a completely different outcome for those kids.
After that they just start living together and we get an abrupt ending with them three years down the line, already married. I just felt like so much was missing in their story. I definitely could do with more of Phillip and Kellan. I didn't get enough. Their relationship is quite a big deal for Kellan and I thought it didn't get the hype it deserved. It's warm and loving, but just not developed enough, at least for my taste.
Even so, the book is light, sweet almost and does have a likeable love story, so no worries there.
I liked Tatum, so I'm really looking forward to his book and hopefully we'll get more of that relationship development, since right now Tatum is a complete womanizer but apparently has a dark past with Remy, the principal of the school Kellan's siblings go to.
This one needed a shot of angst and I could do without the break-up, but it's a nice one, I enjoyed it, read it quickly too.
For a moment there, I was afraid I wasn’t going to like this book because I’m not always a fan of kids in books, and this one had 4 and 2 were angsty teenagers!
But still, it was very moving and enjoyable. Kellan was probably the most mature 24-year-old ever, and Phillip never had a chance to resist him.
I wish I could read Tatum’s story, but I don’t think that got published as a book, so 🤷🏻♀️
So so good! This was such a sweet and emotional read. I was hooked from the first page and couldn’t put it down. I loved this family so much, I just wanted to wrap them all up in a hug. I will definitely be rereading this one and I’m already excited for Tatum’s story!
Only Temporary was messy and emotional, and had me hooked from the start.
The story follows twenty-four year old Kellan, who finds himself with temporary custody of his four younger siblings after the passing of their addict mother.
Kellan barely has his life together, but is willing to do whatever he takes to make sure it’s permanent and that his siblings have the life they deserve.
Enter Phillip, the young and friendly social worker assigned to their case. From the moment he and Kellan meet something sparks between them.
Phillip does everything he can to make sure everything is strictly professional, but the more he gets to know Kellan and his family, Phillip realizes he may be over his head on this one.
Holy cannoli, I loved this one! The characters, their stories, and their development throughout Only Temporary was fantastically done.
I really loved Kellan’s journey the most—from the panic of being a new ‘parent’, to dealing with his anger at his mother and his guilt for leaving his siblings behind, to repairing his relationship with them, and figuring out his sexuality and exploring that connection with Phillip. It felt raw and genuine.
The family dynamic here felt realistically portrayed as well. I loved that Kellan wasn’t instantly a father of the year type, he made mistakes but still did his best by the kids. I even liked that his siblings gave him shit for abandoning them—even if it was for the best—and didn’t instantly forgive him for doing so.
I wasn’t overly invested in Kellan and Phillip’s romance tbh—it was sweet and steamy and everything I expected from Nicole, but the family dynamic here is what really cinched this for me.
𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗖𝗧: - mechanic + social worker - forbidden attraction - different worlds - bi awakening - found family - angsty + emotional
I loved this one so much !! Nicole Dykes does hurt/comfort so well every time 🥹 Kellan & Phillip were so sweet and easy to root for, I just wanted those bbys to be happy 🥺
I would call this one more moody/sunshine than grumpy/sunshine. Kellan and his siblings had such a hard life so it was understandable why he felt the way he did…except when it came to Phillip. That moody man stood no chance against his sunshine man and that’s why I love grumpy/sunshine trope so much. Seeing the walls slowly (inevitably) crash down bc the grumpy truly just wants to be happy? Oh, I eat that shit up every time. Phillip was such a sweet, intuitive character that didn’t feel cliche because he had his own hang ups that were so relatable to anyone who loves hard.
This was a quick, emotional read that I literally finished in a day bc that’s just how it always goes with a Nicole Dykes book. She writes characters that you feel for almost instantly and this book was no different 🥰
This book is amazing 😍 I love it so much, because it’s believable angst. It’s not made up nasty parents or family feuds that I’ve been reading about lately but actual life and family drama. The kids behave also very realistic, left without their mom in their brother’s care. And I really liked how much Kellan loved them and became sober because he wanted to take care of them. And Philip and his savior complex was just the best. Their connection was amazing and everything I ask for in a book.
So five gold stars. And this book goes straight into my favorites category. I read it in one go (almost, did have to stop to feed my kids, but as soon as we were finished eating, I picked it up again) 🙈
Will reread and definitely recommend! 🤗
I received an ARC for this book and these opinions are my own
This has been on my TBR list for a long time, but I haven't been in the right headspace to tackle anything even remotely serious. Thankfully, I finally got there, because I absolutely loved this.
Phillip, Kellan, and the four kids (plus Tatum) were amazing characters, and I quickly became invested in them all. Such a great book. It took a while for me to get there, but I'm so glad I was finally able to read this, after so many glowing reviews from all of my friends on here.
Only Temporary is my second book by Nicole Dykes, and it's safe to say that I'm in love with the author's writing style. I devoured it in almost one sitting.
We're following Kellan Rhodes, a recovering addict who has to take care of his siblings after the death of their mother.
The characters are so easy to love. Kellan really broke my heart; his story made me sad. I really appreciated his strenght and the fact that he wanted to be a better person for his siblings. He didn't give up, and did his best to earn their trust. He regretted abandoning them, but I understood his decision. In order to be a good guardian, he had to be in the right state of mind. He needed to heal on his own.
Despite doing okay now, I appreciated the fact that Kellan wasn't 100% fixed; he still had issues but he tried. His relationship with Phillip, albeit good for his health, wasn't his main reason to get better though. He always had his siblings' best intentions in mind, no matter the hardships he faced.
Phillip was another great surprise! His optimism, his unwavering support towards Kellan, and the love he has for the kids; it all warmed my heart. They both deserved the other, and I do think they're a good pairing.
Kellan has never been attracted to men before, but I just loved how he wasn't bothered by his new-found interest in Phillip. They were both so cute, and so horny for each other, I couldn't stop smiling and rolling my eyes sometimes.
Kellan's siblings were great side characters, espcially Raegan and Cason. Oh, Cason. At the end of the book, I was ready to beg the author to write a story for him, and guess what? He'll be getting one (after Tatum's)! I'm so happy. This boy, despite not being a main character, stole the show. I have a soft spot for these types of characters. He's an angry kid, who had to grow up faster than expected to take care of his brothers and sister after Kellan left. I want to know more about him.
Nonetheless, I wanted to read more about this family. I had such a great time reading about them that more scenes between Kellan, Phillip and the kids would have been greatly appreciated. Still, this story felt special to me. Kellan and Phillip found their person in each other, but gained a bigger family.
I can't wait to read more about this universe and all these characters.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Wow, this story really hit me deep. First things first: this story contains some heavier topics and you should check the triggers before reading 🌸
Kellan and Phillip come from different places. Kellan is the oldest of 5 siblings, giving him a lot of responsibilities for his young age since their parents are not available. I felt so many things reading this book and I wanted to hug Kellan ever so often. He is such a strong and loveable character. Phillip is the social worker for his family, and their attraction is undeniable.
The siblings were represented so well, considering every one of them had a lot to deal with. The dynamic between the siblings was on point, and every one who has brothers or sisters knows how hard that can be, especially in such a unique and tragic situation.
I was so happy how the story turned out, these characters deserve the whole world! 🩷
This was everything I needed and more. Nicole has this amazing way of putting so much emotion into her characters without all the extra fluff and Only Temporary was another great example of that.
Immediately my heart breaks for Kellan, a recovering addict who is trying his best to be there for his younger siblings when they get placed in his custody. After leaving them four years ago, anger and grief radiate from the entire family. Kellan reminds strong throughout and I loved his character. He was doubting himself every step of the way, but that underlying strength allowed him to keep pushing forward and make sure he was doing what he needed to to stay clean.
Phillip is our sweet angel baby here. The social worker who goes above and beyond (haha a little too beyond) to help Kellan and his family. I loved their connection together and how they each brought something out in one another. Phillip was definitely the sunshine here but I wouldn’t call Kellan a black cat… maybe a brown cat lol. Above all, I loved Phillip for how he acted with the kids. He was definitely a safe space for each of them and really catered to their own individual needs.
I do wish we got a little more of Phillip’s backstory because I think it would’ve helped to piece together why he is the way he is. But regardless, he was super sweet, patient and kind. 🥰
Watching them both slowly morph into parental figures was so wholesome! Even while dealing with moody ass teenagers, they stumbled a bit but just kept at it together.
This was just a perfect amount of lighter emotional angst mixed with happy tears and a great ending! I wouldn’t say this was a heavy read but it does have sensitive subject matter. Can’t wait for the next books!
This is the fastest I’ve read a book in a long time. I just couldn’t put it down. Nicole did such a good job with this one. I was completely captured by it. I honestly want more of Kellen and “the social worker” Phillip, as well as Tatum and all of Kellen’s siblings.
I do like this author’s characters. I also like that the MCs usually get together early on so we can see the majority of the book with them together. I liked these two together they were really sweet. I did find the bi awakening to be a little unrealistic though. It kind of came on too quickly. I liked how the addiction was handled and talked about and how the kids dealt with their new reality.
I already knew there was going to be a third act break up because I’m pretty sure there’s been one in every book I’ve read by this author. I wasn’t the biggest fan of how they came back together after the break up. Phillip begs Kellan not to hurt him, kellan swears he won’t and then what does Phillip turn around and do? Hurt Kellan. And then doesn’t even really apologize to breaking up with him, just kind of made it all about himself and his past trauma. Idk that’s just my personal opinion.
Anyway I hate that Tatum was described as such a manwhore because I loved him. But I could have done without hearing about all the cum stains, condom wrappers and the women’s underwear found in his room. Hearing about how much he gets around does not entice me to want to read his book, even though I will. He also cheated on his girlfriend with her friend and he just had relationship red flags all around. I hope he slows down way before him and Remy get together.
NO CHEATING (secondary character only) NO OP DRAMA THIRD ACT BREAK UP TALK OF ADDICTION DEATH OF A LOVED ONE HEA (married)
This is probably an unpopular opinion, and definitely a me issue, but I just couldn’t turn my brain off with this one. Yes, it’s a feel-good, slice-of-life romance, (or, well, as much as a story about getting temporary custody of your neglected younger siblings can be). But for me, the unprofessionalism was impossible to ignore.
I find it incredibly selfish, and frankly unethical, to risk your license and your ability to stay on a case for personal, romantic reasons. What makes this family and these kids so special that Philip is willing to break the rules for them? He clearly has other cases, and he’s written as someone who genuinely cares and can make a difference. So to risk his job, and by extension the wellbeing of other vulnerable children, because he’s developing feelings? That doesn’t come off as romantic. It reads as irresponsible.
To prioritize your own wants and needs over your responsibility to multiple at-risk children, children who could lose a supportive, invested caseworker, is incomprehensible to me. Despite Kellan and Philip constantly saying the kids are their priority, it doesn’t feel like it. It feels like two adults putting their feelings first, no matter the cost.
And yes, I know someone will say, “It’s not that deep, it’s just a 250-page romance.” But for me, it is that deep. As someone who works in welfare, I simply can’t disengage from the implications here. I can't finish it, because I don't find it romantic, and it's pissing me off.
It was a sweet and emotional story but I felt something was missing.
We’ve learnt many details about Kellan’s past, and his struggles, but I felt like I crave more of a deep dive into his feelings. - Maybe having some peeks inside of his AA meetings?
On the opposite, we only got a very few glimpses on Philip’s past, and I felt like more details would have helped to understand his motivations on becoming a social worker, or what difference the Rhode - Kellan’s - family made to get him so attached, other than wanting to bone Kellan. Maybe a parallel past situation? Without such details, it came off a bit shallow.
This also had me thinking about the romance situation, and while it was decent, it still left an itch; the romance felt a bit too circumstantial. Sure, there is always something that pushes the main characters on each other’s paths, but if I take a look at the relationship without the initial push, I can see if the characters click regardless. Things and interests in common, similar mindset and etc… But I just couldn’t really see Kellan and Philip really click.
The story kept progressing and moving forward smoothly, and at some point I just couldn’t help but feel that it’s too smooth for my taste. I felt despite all the described struggles, everything did came easily, or the struggles were resolved easily. There were no real high stakes, cause they all got smoothed over.
Only Temporary is a MM romance story about Kellan and Phillip.
Kellan is a twenty-four year old former addict working as a mechanic and trying to get his life under control. He is awarded temporary custody of his four minor siblings after the death of their mother. Phillip is a twenty-six year old social worker assigned to Kellan’s case.
It was tough to hear what Kellan and his siblings had gone through growing up. My heart went out to them. Kellan left them four years ago to try to get clean, and now he is going to do everything he can to earn back their trust and show them he is there for them. His siblings certainly didn’t make it easy on him. Thank goodness Kellan had the support of his best friend Tatum, as well as his social worker Phillip.
Their journey definitely wasn’t easy, and we see the challenges they have to face. I found myself rooting for things to all work out. I wanted nothing more than for Kellan to get permanent custody of his siblings and for them to finally accept Kellan. Phillip was just the most caring person ever, going above and beyond to help them out. The way he cared about Kellan and his siblings warmed my heart.
Kellan and Phillip had an instant connection. They tried to fight their attraction because of their situation, but I definitely was a fan when they finally gave in. They were perfect together. Both Kellan and Phillip had been through a lot in their pasts, and they deserved a HEA. This story was an emotional one and I absolutely loved it. I have to say this book is now at the top of my favorites by this author. I do hope we get Tatum’s story next!
I received an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review.
This book definitely had me in my feelings all the way through! I loved Kellan and Philip together so much. There was an instant connection between them and I devoured every page! The 4 siblings just made me want to hold them and love them. I definitely recommend this book and I hope that Tatum gets a story asap!
The book starts off with a beautiful foreword that I think sometimes we all need reminding of.
“You are not broken, and no matter how alone you may feel, there will always be someone there to help you. Don’t fight it so much and let them. Because you matter. You are worthy, and you can do anything.”
The subject matter is deep, and a lot of different issues are touched upon, but nothing is looked at in depth. So, the story, despite its topic, is light and relatively simple, with some of the plot being predictable. Kellan and Philip’s relationship is not unbelievable. I’m sure people cross lines like this a lot, and although it took them a while, they did the right thing in the end and got their HEA. The story of the kids felt like it was one bad thing after another, but this is life, so it was believable, and I was glad for their ending.
Kellan realising he’s attracted to Philip is a little predictable, but cute. First noticing details, tingles when they shake hands, the usual. Kellan is gruff, and Philip is sweet, and because it’s from Kellan’s POV, there’s a lot of ‘WTF I’m not gay?!’ It’s very insta-love, but a lot of stories are this way.
If you like comfort and low-angst love stories, this is for you. They love hard and fast, and the kids deserve their HEA. I think I would have liked a bit more depth to the issues mentioned but it was still enjoyable.
————- I received an ARC of this from GRR, and this is my honest review.
Tropes: hurt/comfort, secret relationship, forbidden relationship Feels: 3/5 Steam*: 1.75/5 Kinks: n/a Angst: low/medium HEA: yes Pairing: MM Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: bad parents, death of parent, drug addict parent, money struggles, attempted sexual assault of minor character, reference to past domestic violence and death of an ex, short third act break up Cheating between MCs: No Any cheating: No Other person drama: Neither of them have any interest in anyone else after they meet. Phillip does mention his past exes, and having been in love before, as he's explaining to Keelan that he has had bad taste in men.
3.5 stars
Keelan is 24 years old. He is a recovering addict. He left his home at 20 because his mother was also an addict and his younger siblings were in danger in the environment they were in, and he knew that the right thing to do was for him to get clean and try to get custody of the kids. It took him four years, but he is clean, he has a house, a reliable job. His mother dies of an overdose and he takes custody of the kids. Phillip is assigned as his social worker. Phillip is gay and has had bad luck with men, he always picks men who are broken and need fixing and gets treated badly. Phillip and Keelan start falling for each other. Phillip is spending a lot of time with Keelan's family, caring a lot, becoming important to them all. But they have to keep their romantic relationship secret, because it could risk Phillip's job and Keelan's shot at getting custody permanently. But keeping secrets is difficult around all the kids.
This was a sweet little love story. They really fell for each other and made a family unit. It was nice seeing the family come together. They had a lot of hurt feelings to heal and trust to rebuild. Nicole navigates that well. It was sweet seeing all the grumpy kids warm up to Phillip and Keelan. There were some funny moments thrown in there for comic relief too.
I struggled a bit with the book at times because of the ethical issue of the two of them having a romantic relationship. It's just an uncomfortable ethical ground. And there were some moments that were unrealistic. Like the fact that Philip did not report the attempted sexual assault of Keelan's sister, with him being a social worker he must have had an obligation to report that. Also, I think this book is a little one sided. We only hear about Phillip's life in connection to Keelan - Philip is always doing something for Keelan, or telling Keelan about his exes, that's how Philip is defined as a character. We don't hear Keelan supporting Philip after Phillip has a tough day with other families he supports as a social worker. So it's not realistic or fair as relationship dynamic. Phillip is the one that always gives.
Some notable moments:
I love a protective brother. "“Great. I’ll have my big brother take me to the dance.” She’s getting huffier. “Maybe have Tatum come too. Threaten to break his legs.” “That’s a good idea.” Kellan looks intrigued, and I shake my head at him, making his face drop."
The idea of them getting their 8-year-old brother to beat up the guy cuz he's less likely to get in trouble for it... LOL "“She’s okay, Cason.” “Are you sure?” I nod my head. “He tried to push her further than she wanted to go, and she broke his nose.” “I’m going to kill him.” And I see that murderous glint in his eyes—one I felt myself. But I’m not so sure Cason won’t act on it. “You’re old enough that they’d try you as an adult.” I think he’s going to tell me to fuck off or get angry, but he actually smirks with a quick scoff. “So you’re saying it’ll have to be Kieran who does it?” “Or Braylen,” I say with a quick answering smile."
Innocent Braylen! "“I’m not your caseworker anymore,” I cut in, hoping that leading with this will help ease them into it. “What?” Braylen looks upset as he gazes over at me. “You don’t want us anymore?” Okay, so I fucked that up, I realize immediately. “No. That’s not why I can’t be your caseworker. The opposite actually. I want to be in your lives more,” I try again. Cason scoots back from the table, but he doesn’t get up. When I look over at him, I see his nostrils are flared, and it’s an indication he’s ready for a fight. “You want to get into my brother’s pants more, is what you mean.” “Why would you want to wear Kellan’s pants?” Braylen asks. The poor kid is super confused now. “They’d be huge on you.”"
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

∆ If I may say so, Nicole is an author that I have been reading since I guess ending of 2022 and the fact that her writing has only improved makes me feel so happy! I loved reading Only Temporary because it has many elements made my heart ache and yet all I wanted was to comfort each and every character. Highly recommended 💙
∆ My sweet little heart couldn't even imagine the pain the kids would have gone through, all of my love was going out to them, oh my. I needed to make them feel better. Even Kellan because he too is a kid. (I am only 22)
∆ I loved reading how Kellan just knew and accepted that there were few lines that couldn't be crossed and he actually makes it even better with Phillip! I am in love with these two boys!
4.5 ⭐️ Kellan and Phillip 😭🥰 I love them so much. The story, the heart, the chemistry?? It was all so good. Obsessed with the sweet, messy family from this book.
I loved that the focus of this book just wasn’t on the romantic couple, but also on Kellan and his siblings fractured relationship. I enjoyed reading about the highs and lows they experienced as a family because it was real. You could empathise with every single character, even when they acted out.
Phillip is a total sweetheart who is set on helping this family as their caseworker, then as their friend. Even though some members give him a hard time he doesn’t give up. Along the way he and Kellan develop feelings towards one another which is surprising because Kellan has never felt anything for a man before. But, he takes it in stride and never freaks out, just leans into what he feels with Phillip.
The other sweetest person in this is Kellan’s best friend Tatum. The man literally moves out of his shared home with Kellan just to be able to help him get the kids. He watches them when asked and covers him at work. He and Kellan seem to lean on one another after being there for each other through their addiction recovery. I’m very intrigued by his story and past with the boys’ principal, I can’t wait for his book.
This is an amazing reading about a broken family finding a home again and being able depend on their brother. It’s also about a man finding love for the first time and wanting to be better for his family, his boyfriend, and himself.
- Caseworker X client - Recovering addict MMC - Guardian to siblings - First times - Secretly dating
Another fantastic read from one of my favorite authors. My first book by Nicole was *Hostile*, and I’ve been hooked on her writing style ever since. *Only Temporary* gave off a similar vibe to *Hostile*, so naturally, it has become one of my favorites.
*Only Temporary* tells the story of Kellan, who unexpectedly becomes the guardian of his four siblings after their mother overdoses. Having left behind a toxic environment four years earlier in an effort to stay clean, Kellan now finds himself facing the anger and sense of betrayal from his siblings. Despite the tension, he is determined to win them over and gain full custody.
Enter Philip, the optimistic caseworker assigned to their family. He believes in fixing things and helping others, and he immediately takes a genuine interest in Kellan’s situation. From their very first meeting, there is a strong attraction between Kellan and Philip. Kellan, who has always identified as straight, struggles to understand his growing feelings for Philip. Meanwhile, Philip, who is openly gay, knows he has to keep his emotions in check to avoid compromising the case.
What I loved most was how deeply Philip cared—not just for the children, but also for Kellan. Even when things got difficult, he remained composed and unwavering in his belief that Kellan could stay clean and succeed. Once Kellan came to terms with his feelings, he was all in, and their chemistry was undeniable. The intimate moments were not only sexy but filled with genuine emotion. Their hard-earned HEA (Happily Ever After) was incredibly satisfying.
The children were beautifully written—flawed, hurting, and healing. You couldn’t help but care for them, even during their tough moments. Braylen was absolutely adorable, and I loved every scene he had with the boys. Tatum was another standout side character—loyal, supportive, and exactly the kind of best friend Kellan needed.
Overall, I absolutely loved this story and highly recommend it. I’m especially excited to read the upcoming stories for Tatum and Cason (not as a couple, but each with different love interests). Nicole continues to deliver emotional, heartfelt stories that stay with you long after the final page.

Another story that I really enjoyed reading! Topics such as the socio-economic gap, addiction and abuse always touch me deeply! Nicole Dykes has taken up these topics with great sensitivity. Despite the heavy subject matter, this book has so many beautiful moments. Watching Kellan and his siblings try to find each other again, and build a renewed relationship was great. The pure love (and hot spice 😉🔥🌶️) between Kellan and Phillip, beautiful. Phillip who has so much unconditional love to give, you just have to like him. But I was also very impressed by the deep friendship between Kellan and Tatum! I can't wait to find out his story too!
This book is ridiculous! I didn’t like the writing. The pacing was all over the place. Both characters POV was just them doubting themselves and each other and way too much in their own heads. Then we have the fighting the feelings trope. Then the worst fucking part is the third act break up at 83%! But don’t worry, they are back together at 86%! See what I mean about pacing?! 🙄
Oh and a whole lot of telling and not showing! I would have loved to read about some of their firsts as it was happening, but, no, just was told that it happened. I would have loved to read about the court day and how they felt when Kellan was granted custody, but nope, just told about it in the epilogue 3 years later!
