Convicted: A Short Story

Rate this book
Jahlil Carter’s world implodes when his teenage daughter, Aaliyah, is found murdered. The pain is unbearable, but his nightmare turns surreal when he becomes the prime suspect. The evidence is stacked against him, but something feels deliberate —his memories are fractured, and someone wants them to stay that way.

As the city turns against him, Detective Marissa Tate begins to sense a darker force at play. The deeper she digs, the more twisted the truth becomes. Someone powerful wants the real story buried—and they’ll erase anyone who gets too close.

With time running out, Jahlil must uncover the truth before he loses everything. But when the final piece falls into place, the truth isn’t just devastating—it demands a justice or vengeance?

A powerful 20 page read.

What really elevates this short story isn’t just the mystery—it’s the layers of injustice woven into every page. You feel the weight of public opinion. The corruption. The power plays happening behind the scenes. Detective Marissa Tate’s slow realization that something much bigger is at work adds another tense layer to an already suffocating situation.

And then the ending.

The author doesn’t just hand you answers—they hand you questions. The kind that sit with you. The kind that force you to examine justice vs. vengeance, truth vs. narrative, guilt vs. manipulation. For such a short read, it hits surprisingly deep.

It’s quick, but it lingers. And honestly? Those final questions are what make the story come alive.

We need more!

This story had 5 star qualities and I absolutely love the concept of what the author was doing with it. I feel like it needed more fleshing out and if it would have had more buildup added to each chapter, this would have been a banger for sure!!

Another book by this author that left me with so many questions. This was sort of like a prologue in my opinion. Like I sneak peek to a full novel.
