'TOAST'

A short story by best selling author Terry McDonald

Told from the viewpoint of a special needs teenager, 'TOAST' is the story of a family who attempt to wait out an Alien invasion inside an elaborate bunker built by Jacob Green, the father. He planned well, but not all plans are destined to be successful. After more than ten years, the family is down to their last few days of food. Jacob doesn't think it's safe to leave, but they have options. One is to crack the seals to the bunker and the other is a remedy of last resort. Toast is the drama that leads to hard made decisions. I hope you enjoy this story. Let me give warning, this is not a feel-good tale.

Language, Adult Situations
Disclaimer. 'TOAST' is a reiteration of a former story, Bunker Christmas. TOAST is a complete rewrite and update.

A special needs teenager has been living in a nuclear bunker most of his life after an alien invasion left the planet infected with dangerous fallout. He lives with his dad, sister Patti and neighbour Roberta, his mother having died a couple of years back. With food running out, a mission will be launched to leave the bunker and film the devastation for anyone who finds the footage.

This is a pretty grim story as the group come to terms with the suicide that they must face, except for Marcus who doesn't grasp what the others are planning. I don't mind a grim story with unhappy ending but the way the characters were so cruel to each other was pretty bad. Marcus is hit several times which I found unacceptable and very nasty comments are always being directed his way-and this from people who are meant to love him!

Would have liked more-flashbacks in detail about them running for the shelter, the build up to it...instead of an info dump about the fate of man. Just not enough for me.
