I started writing this lengthy review and I felt guilty. This is a small local author. Martens, if you are reading this because I am one of like 20 reviews on Goodreads, when your writing hits, it hits so good. I think you are genuinely a good psychological horror author, although if you haven't already, hire an editor to reduce some of the repetitions (I can only read "molten ice" so many times). Lex works so well as your villain because he is so smarmy and disgusting and awful that he ties the plot together nicely.

My biggest issue is I came for Edgar Allen Poe and gothic horror and it's just not really here. You could largely eliminate any reference to EAP and the plot would be mostly the same, especially since the curse doesn't play that large of a role in this one. If you want psychological thrillers with some romance and a few cheeky winks to Poe's works, this is probably great. It's just not what I was promised.

Also, the next book is going to be The Black Cat??? The book after Poe gets a black kitten??? MARTENS, I SWEAR TO GOD.

Awed

I am simply in awe at how the author intricately wove these words to create the haunting second book in the Poe series. I was immediately gripped with the first book and this one just held on tighter. Fans of Edgar Allen Poe will love all the related mentions of this plot that knows no bounds regarding hard limits and his work.

No spoilers, since Rest In Peace really isn't a standalone read and you have to start with the first book Nevermore to understand this one.

Rest In Peace is the second book in a six book series. Paranormal isn't a typical genre that I read, the tie in to Edgar Allan Poe originally caught my attention and I liked Nevermore (Book One) so much that I wanted to continue with the Poe series.

It's well written, the author grabs and holds your attention, and puts you right there in the pages. With the continued saga of Poe and Frost as they recovery emotional and physically from tragedies they suffered and as they try to rebuild their relationship.

She keeps you reading, both lead characters are likable, you also have a great support cast that keeps the storyline believable and makes it feel so real.

I like Martens writing style, it has the perfect pace to keep me interested, very dark, suspenseful, full of twists and turns, several intertwining storylines, tension filled, action packed, very gripping, you have a few nasty characters and it all builds to a great conclusion.

I've never been a fan of first person books, but Martens executes it perfectly, through Poe telling the story and even gives her full control of story.

I just hoped that when Poe and Lex had their final battle, that Poe would take him out avenge the pain and suffering she endured because of him and without Lex getting the upper hand again.

Rest In Peace is a worthy read, but it's not a standalone read and you'll have to read Nevermore first. Discover Rachel M. Martens, she's a young talented author, with a great future and she'll end up being your new favorite author.

Edgar left our Poe with a warning, for her to sleep with one eye open. After all that has happened, Poe still isn't free of the curse, nor of what she is going through in areas. She is also not free from some other things that aren't just her past either. Caleb is interesting. Frost and Poe have so much more to learn about each other, life and the issues that just being Poe create. Our very eerie bad folks from the end of the first book are not out of commission yet. This is still a full length read, so I'm not quite through reading it yet. The suspense has not let up, and though this is set up for a six book series, I hope that more of them will be in Story Cartel for us to read! While the first book can be more PSTD related, this one has a bit of a shift.

My copy of this book came from Story Cartel in exchange for my honest review and nothing more.

I recived a free copy from Storycartel in exchange of my review. I have read the first Poe´story and like it a lot. I found this one even more darker than the first one.
