I know I read this when it was new, but I didn’t remember any of it on this re-read. That said, I think this is actually a better book than the original. Frankly, you don’t even really need to have read the first book to fully appreciate this one as the only real holdover is Slappy.
This time out, we’re following the middle child, Amy, who wants to get work as a ventriloquist. Her current dummy is broken, though, so she needs a new one. Enter Slappy! And, of course, the magical words that unknowingly bring him to life. But will her parents believe that it’s Slappy ruining her big sister’s paintings and not her? Of course not!
My only real complaint with this one is how quickly Stine tries to wrap things up. The story is moving at a normal pace until the last 30 pages when he decides it’s time to be done. At least that’s how it felt. The last moments just happen so quickly that it feels like he forgot he only had 120ish pages to complete the story, so the conclusion is just “we had this plan, and it worked”, and little else.
Still, I liked the characters well enough, and there were some genuinely creepy moments with Slappy that I thought were done quite well. As I mentioned, this one holds up better than the original and has me excited for part three!
