As a writer of suspense thrillers I often ask myself what if? What if this happened instead of that? Or why a particular person reacted as they did. So often fact is stranger than fiction and these books start with a fact which I develop. You may be surprised to know, for example, just how many patients experience changes in their likes and dislikes after a transplant operation ~ The Darkness Within. Or how easy it is to look into someone’s home through their CCTV ~ Stalker.

Just a little bit about me. I live in England and have three children. I have always been a writer - from when I was at school, with poems and articles in the school magazine. In my teens I began writing short stories, a few radio plays and novels. I finally made it into the bestseller charts with Damaged in 2007 which I wrote under the pseudonym Cathy Glass. Since then I have had 28 books published, many of which have become international bestsellers.

Thank you for your time, I hope you enjoy the Lisa Stone thrillers.

I don't know why I put up with this - I have to be a masochist. This reads like a series of household chores, only occasionally interrupted by a ghost causing disturbances.

"She prepared dinner. The girls ate. Her husband came home and she ate with him. The sofa shook and there were whispers in the house. She did the laundry."

Note that everything is done by the wife. The husband works, brushes off her concerns about the house and goes to sleep. I can't remember if he even has one full conversation with his daughters.

For a horror novel, it's incredibly boring, aimless, and with such stupid protagonists who don't act but only react, that you eagerly await their deaths. At least the book remains consistent: The end is as disappointing as the rest and nothing is resolved, true to the motto: Go, book, give us nothing!

Not the best, read like a recipe. Then she, then this, then that... Nothing really got tied up and the husband is an ignorant pig.

The Forever House follows Jasmine and her family as they excitedly move into their forever home, 13 Ravens Lane. But very soon, it becomes clear that something is wrong with the house. It’s almost like someone, or something, doesn’t want them there. It’s not long before Jasmine is forced to question whether she and her family are really safe in their new home. Or if whatever is lurking inside is going to be the death of them all…

The Forever House has a simple premise: a family move into what they hope to be their forever home, not realising it comes with a sinister addition. When eerie things start happening - drops of temperature, dying plants, swarms of insects and wounds that won’t heal - the family are put through an unpredictable turmoil that creates a sense of dread that lingers on every page.

I enjoyed the pacing, and flew through this book in just a few hours, however I did feel the plot was a little rushed and the ending was slightly underwhelming. I felt some of the supernatural moments became quite repetitive, and I was itching for more depth from both the characters and the plot that I’ve come to love from Lisa Stone’s books. That said, The Forever House does excel when it leans into its strength: transforming an ordinary domestic setting into something eerie and unsettling.

Thank you so much to Harper Fiction for sending me this copy of The Forever House to read and review. My opinions are my own.

Another absolutely fantastic, jam packed full of mystery treats along the way with a hint of spiritual elements which keeps you absolutely hooked throughout! Every chapter keeps you going and you genuinely feel like you’re living everyday with this poor family! Dolls with china faces, grey top and green bottoms! IYKYK Lisa stone in genuinely my favorite author and this book, like all the rest has continued that title! 💙 🏠 🏠 🏠 🏠 🏠 a recommendation for Halloween 👻

The concept is good, but I had problems with the way it was written. It seemed basic. However, books need to be accessible to all, and that's a plus for this. The ghost and the outfit she wore seemed like a joke, it was her favourite outfit, and she was buried in it, It sounded unappealing no wonder she was haunting the place; she probably wanted a better outfit. The narrative failed for me, but that does not mean it would for others. The concept was good, as I stated, just too basic for me. It was like a shopping list, to do list, decorating list etc. The ending came so quickly, it was such a sudden and disappointing conclusion, that I altered my star rating. There are many budding authors who can write better. How this had such a great publishing firm I do not know.

There were too many unanswered questions, plot holes, and the ending was incredibly rushed. At the beginning, I thought this book was written by AI. The writing style read more like a script than a novel. It became more interesting toward the middle, but ended very unsatisfyingly.

I felt genuinely compelled to write this review, as this was honestly one of the most disappointing books I’ve ever read. The writing style was weak—repetitive, simplistic, and often dull. At times, it felt like I was reading a horror story written by a teenager or an early draft that was never properly edited. I honestly don’t understand how this book made it through the publishing process.
Although marketed as a thriller, the book completely lacked tension, atmosphere, or any sense of suspense. The plot revolves around a family moving into a new home, where strange, supernatural events begin to occur. However, the characters’ reactions are so unrealistic and absurd that any chance of building fear or intrigue is instantly lost.

Mark, the husband, is perhaps one of the most detached characters I’ve ever read. His response to every disturbing event is to brush it off, try to rationalize it, pour himself a glass of wine, and ask what’s for dinner. In fact, his go-to solution after traumatic events is simply to go to bed, which made the whole narrative feel even more unbelievable. Jasmine, the main character and Mark’s wife, works remotely but is always behind on her tasks. Rather than taking responsibility or trying to catch up, she randomly decides to take a week off to relax. I honestly found myself wondering what kind of job allows that level of carelessness—sign me up.
The characters, in general, felt flat and poorly written. Mark and Jasmine’s children are barely present, mostly playing outside, and sometimes it even feels like Jasmine doesn’t want them around, as she constantly brushes off what they say. Meanwhile, Mark’s relationship with the kids is practically nonexistent. He seems more interested in flirting with the neighbor, Poppy—a subplot that’s introduced and then completely forgotten without any resolution.
There were numerous plotlines that felt promising at first but were never developed or explained. I kept reading in the hope that the story would improve or at least tie up some of the loose ends, but it only got worse as it went on. I found myself sighing and rolling my eyes more often than I’d like to admit. By the end, I was left frustrated, disappointed, and stuck in a major reading slump.
To make matters worse, the book is full of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. One mistake that stood out was the use of “eating tea” instead of “drinking tea”—a small thing, but one that reflects the overall lack of polish.

No exaggeration—this was the worst book I’ve read this year and possibly one of the worst books I’ve read in general. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, as it genuinely felt like a waste of time. While I’ve heard the author has written better books, this one completely killed any curiosity I had to read more of her work. It’ll likely take me a while to recover from this one.

Oh dear... I really enjoyed the Cottage, so I was looking forward to this new novel by Lisa Stone. It didn't read like the same author. Or Lisa Stone just doesn't understand what makes good ghost stories work.

I'll forgive the mechanical prose (which read like a script) and robotic dialogue (even the ghost sounds robotic), but much of the entire narrative is just a series of random paranormal happenings the author must think constitute a ghost story. There is no atmosphere or mood. Just a basic modern house with a lawn. There is no fear or suspense since the characters keep dismissing the strange events and blaming in on their imaginations (Mark the husband must have Alzheimer's or form of memory loss because he keeps forgetting he's seen the ghost multiple times), the characters act and speak like robots so it's impossible to muster any emotion for them, and there really aren't any twists, turns or even surprises. The marketing copy claims there is "a twist you won't see coming" but there is not one twist in this book. It's false and misleading. Everything pans out with little imagination and with zero original thoughts. The twist is... there is no twist!

Clearly Lisa Stone can write a good thriller but should probably stay away from writing ghost stories unless she really wants to learn what makes them tick. It's the most straightforward ghost story you're going to get only less original than you might imagine. It might have worked as a short story, eliminate all the mundane day to day detail and hone in on Angela - it could be a good ten page story.

Also, this is the formula used in almost every chapter: make coffee at 7am, start work, make breakfast for girls, insert random happening, put kids to bed, wait for husband to come home to gaslight you and go to bed, wonder if it was your imagination. It gets very repetitive. It gets boring. And horror should never be predictable. It should play with the formula, smash the formula, pull the carpet from under the readers feet and unsettle them. Unnerve them. But this uses the same formula every single time.

Minor point but Jasmine keeps denying the possibility of the "supernatural" but yet speaks to her dead mum and looks out for signs from her, so which is it?

I think I'll stick to Lisa Stone's books that stay well clear of the paranormal.

I read a reader review that perfectly sums up the book:

"Go book, give us nothing!"

I kept waiting for this story to pick up, but unfortunately it never did. It was very slow moving and not at all frightening or eerie. Just too common place. The characters were boring. They held little interest for me. The wife was the main character, but had little going on. She and her family lead very mundane lives. Every day was the same: they got up, went about unexciting days, ate and went to bed. The husband might as well have not existed at all. He added nothing to the story and was in denial of everything going on right through to the end of the book. For some reason the author liked to talk about lunch a lot as if it were an important factor. Even the haunting was fairly boring. Nothing very much happened or ever built up to any kind of climax. There were so many missed opportunities for the family to communicate or understand the ghost and why she was there, but they passed up every chance. A priest was even introduced and was basically useless. It seems odd to say a ghost could be so uninteresting, but she was. Secondary characters didn’t add much either. They hardly served a purpose. Nothing was ever resolved and the ending was disappointing. Just bland. Sorry, but I cannot recommend this book.

What do you do when you’ve just moved into a house and find out it’s haunted?
How do you live with a ghost?

A plot focused, easy read with a creepy feel to it. It’s an interesting storyline and definitely enjoyable. Short, snappy chapters keep the story rolling along. Despite it being supernaturally goings-on I found the story fairly plausible (if you believe that hauntings are a real thing that is). I was interested in the fact that there seem to be people who believe their houses are haunted and get priests involved to rid the house of the ghosts!

I found the writing to be very descriptive. There was a scene towards the end of the book that felt a bit off to me and it didn’t resolve well enough in my opinion. The ending left me hanging quite a bit, it felt rushed and unfinished.

Overall definitely readable and if you’re interesting in the topic it might well be worth a read.

The Forever House. by Lisa Stone.
Jasmine and Mark are renting a place .. but really want to buy their own house … their forever home to live in with their 2 girls Leah and Isabel. Jasmine is certain she has found that very house .. when Mark is home from work they will all go to look at the place together.
They are all excited and the viewing goes well … or does it! They buy the house and move in slowly getting everything sorted into place … Jasmine is now a bit worried as things are not as they seemed .. she is sure weird things are happening and now Isabel is starting to see things too!
A intriguing book that makes you think if these things are happening.
Good read from a great author.

Solid 4 stars

Being a big fan of residential haunting books, I very much enjoyed this. The haunting is subtle and far more believable than “Hollywood” portrayals. It builds slowly with the husband not believing the wife at first and leads into an interesting story which explained why the house was haunted. I found the characters to be very well written and likeable.

I listened to this on Audiobook, I did feel that the author and narrator could have built up the tension a bit more as I didn’t find it particularly scary, which is what I was hoping for when choosing this book.

I particularly liked the fact that the haunting was not wrapped up with a nice bow at the end as I find other authors do.

💬 Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)

This was my first time reading something that leans more towards a ghost story than a typical suspense novel—and wow, it seriously spooked me. I started reading at night thinking it would be a regular thriller, but ended up needing to play music just to calm myself down 😅

The plot is gripping and fast-paced, with each chapter pulling me deeper. Even though the story felt eerie and disturbing at times, I couldn’t stop reading. It’s one of those “I’m scared but I have to know what happens next” books.

If you’re into creepy, dark stories with a strong psychological twist, give this one a try. But maybe… read it in the daytime. You’ve been warned! 👻

“Standing behind her, ‘It’s either you or your daughters,’ she said, pointing at Jasmine’s chest just as a red mark appeared…”

Jasmine and her family are thrilled to leave their cramped apartment behind and settle into what they hope will be their “forever home”—a charming house with an overgrown backyard and quirky but seemingly kind neighbors. Everything seems perfect… until it isn’t.

Unbeknownst to them, they aren’t the only ones living in the house. Strange, unexplained events begin to unfold—televisions turn off on their own, swarms of flies appear without reason, and their daughter insists she sees someone no one else can. The family brushes it off at first, offering logical explanations and even calling in a priest. But things keep getting worse.

The eerie atmosphere and slow-burn suspense reminded me of Poltergeist, where the horror creeps in gradually but relentlessly. A mysterious presence named Angela begins to make herself known—promising to stop her “bad behavior”… for now.

What would you do if your dream home became a nightmare? How far would you go to protect your children, your sanity, and everything you’ve worked for?

Jasmine and her family move into 13 Ravens Lane. A house that should become their forever home. Following strange occurrences, Jasmine begins to suspect there is something going on in the house…

This book had creepy house vibes… a sudden drop in temperature, swarms of flies, plants dying for no reason….

It was an easy read, and quite predictable, but it had me gripped and want to keep reading.

Thank you to Harper Fiction for the finished copy. Opinions expressed here are my own.

Thought I was going to really enjoy this book at the beginning, but ended it feeling disappointed. The book felt unfinished, too many unresolved issues. Also must say the husband character in the story was completely unlikeable. Thought there may be an explanation for his attitude further along in the book, but alas again no mention of why he was portrayed the way he was. I gave it three stars because it wasn’t terrible, but could have been so much better.

So bad it was almost comical! Reads as if it is a spoof on domestic thriller novels. Protagonist is literally obsessed with asking what her children are playing or going to play with and the author is obsessed with stating different times of the day relentlessly. “It was 4pm” “now it’s 4:15pm” “then it was 5pm”. If she told us the protagonist worked four days a week once she told us a trillion times

Jasmine, her husband and two children move into a haunted house, with hauntings including all photo frames breaking during the move, a cut hand that won’t heal, dead plants and vegetables in the garden and a shaking sofa. I’ve read far better ghost/haunted house stories. The characters were also flat and generally, dull. Personally I think Lisa Stone is a good thriller writer, and that’s what she should stick to.

Disappointed

The first 3 books by this author were great.
this book and her last one would be better for teenagers.

Reminds me of point horror books that I read as a teenager.

It's such a shame. I didn't want to finish it (I always finished books) as I found the storyline dragged out and wasn't very interesting. I skipped some pages so I could see if it got any better.

undeveloped story

Ghosts in a house…fine. A family moves in unaware…fine but the rest of the book just skims over the greater story. The story telling could have been so much richer. I’m sorry to say I stuck with it hoping it would get better. No such luck.
