Curiosity shop owner Owen Derleth is just as much an oddity as the items he sells.

After losing both his eyesight and his wife in the same tragic accident, Owen plunged into a literal and emotional darkness. Almost ten years later, longtime friend Elizabeth Everly enlists his help -- and his clairvoyance -- in examining the disappearance of her colleague’s daughter.

Now Owen is forced to revisit the mutual but long-buried feelings between them, and the haunting premonition he’s kept secret about her future.

I was very kindly given a copy by the author.
This is such an interesting very short read. Not at all what I am used to reading but very good. It is set in the late 1940's, early 1950's and has a kind of paranormal story line. There is the also the mystery part, and it is kind of "noire" or dark. It is gripping and at the same time you want it to be over, that dark part.
Owen, you feel he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, rightfully so, but in the end you feel that despite the darkness- his darkness and ours- the sun rises somehow.

Looks like I get to be the first person to review this novella. Wasn't sure what to expect, completely unfamiliar (but hey practically local) author, intriguing cover, not overly committal length, sure why not. Turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Something of a mix of supernatural & investigation & romance & mythical beings, but mixed in just the right proportions for a very enjoyable read. Set in 1940s and 1950s and the author got the cadence of the era just right, it has a charm, charming characters (well, for the most part obviously), charming writing. The story remained interesting throughout without ever devolving into some cheesy paranormal romance. Great cover too and actually accurate to the plot. Light quick entertaining read. Recommended.

I. Loved. It. A supernatural noir-esque novella set in the late forties-early fifties full of suspense, fully real, developed characters and even a hint of romance. I honestly cannot recommend this story highly enough, as it seems custom-tailored for me. It was a quick read but well-worth it, and I will definitely be returning to it again.
