The author compares the cheetah to other cats and tells how they are alike and different so the young reader can easily relate to the material about Cheetahs. I learned a couple of things about cheetahs I didn't know. As usual in Emma Child's animal books, her through research gives the reader much insight into the subject animal. The writing is geared towards young readers with little asides they are able to relate.

And always the excellent set of photographs.

Another fine book.

I liked reading the cheetahs book and learning more about them, especially the differences between the girl and boy cheetahs.

There are many amazing facts about animals in the world, one of the most amazing is that the Cheetah can run at nearly sixty miles per hour for short distances. Furthermore, they have an ability to go from zero to sixty that will put many powered vehicles to shame. Add in an amazing agility to stop and turn quickly and they are an incredible example of efficient bio-engineering.
This book about Cheetahs is written at a level that is roughly at the third grade. The paragraphs are of normal length but there are few of them per page and many illustrations. Facts about the social life and the process of a Cheetah developing into an adult from a cub are covered. It is interesting that the female Cheetahs are generally solitary while the males form coalitions.
Science and understanding of the world, along with the curiosity to investigate and explore is an important skill to acquire as a child. This book makes the learning of science fun.

How can any animal be as photogenic as the cheetah? They are regal, yet elegant and I can easily imagine an Egyptian ruler sitting on an elaborately carved golden throne and reaching out to stroke his favorite pet cheetah.

I knew that cheetahs are the fastest land animals and that they can leap incredible distances. I DIDN'T know that they are bad climbers or that they are unable to roar. I was particularly interested in the information that the females are solitary, but the males live in groups. This is contrary to the living arrangements of most animals.

As Ms. Child points out, cheetah populations are endangered because of hunting and habitat loss. Ironically, successful projects to protect and increase lion populations have worked against the cheetah, since lions prey on young cheetahs. Hopefully, the growth of "eco-tourism" will prompt countries with cheetah populations to greater efforts to preserve them.

The pictures are wonderful and the text is entertaining and educational. Anyone of any age who loves animals, will like this book.
