A brick of refuse from God's own trash compactor. A diaper filled with glitter, discarded in the parking lot of a Rodeo Drive boutique. A 1972 collectible Burger King Harlem Globetrotters tumbler, filled to the brim with the oldest and finest cognac, aged in barrels crafted from shards of the True Cross.

June Flaum Singer, why are you so chronically underrated? The filth-nastiness of Harold Robbins, the histrionics of early Judith Krantz, an ability to describe wealth and social climbing that's reminiscent of a recovering-from-a-head-injury Danielle Steele.

The Movie Set tells the epic story of four young friends who meet at college, and their eventual rise to varying levels of fame and stardom in Hollywood. Along the way, there will be murder, S&M, roofies, seduction and many, many descriptions of satin jumpsuits. This, my friends, is the perfect book to read while quietly getting drunk on a mix of Slimfast and the kind of vodka that comes in plastic bottles. Bottom-shelf quality dressed up in top-shelf hairdos. My favorite kind of garbage.

People tend to pick up books for me while they're out, knowing I like reading a multitude of different genres. I was not expecting to enjoy this and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the characters. Some parts were weak in writing, but otherwise, I thought this was an interesting read, an exploratory of human psyche in an unexpected way.

The reason I only give this book One star is not because it is a soapie/glamorous novel. I like to read Sidney Sheldon, Jackie Collins and Judith Krantz.
The plot is so-so, but almost all characters are mean. I Know Hollywood is not a place for kindness, but these characters are greedy.
This novel start 1964 and ends 1981, but even If it takes place over three decades, it could have been shorter.

Three stars because I hated the ending.

Not a bad read, kind of real lengthy and full of squeamish moments here and there and the ending is very anti-climax as well. Not a book I'd recommend if you want to get lost in a novel but not bad for passing the time.
