A brief and fairly superficial overview of the major events of the battle of Gettysburg. It is a given that an in depth review of this huge and pivotal battle cannot be done in 200 pages. Still, several time worn and somewhat dubious battle legends are given coverage here at the expense of the truly significant actions. There are, however, a few very good points in this book. The author has included many battle reports and communications between the participants in the battle which are a priceless resource for students of the Civil War. There are also several good maps of the three days of fighting. The final section contains very short biographies of the Union and Confederate leaders of the battle. Most of these seem to merely repeat the stories already related in the text and could therefore be dispensed with.
