Ingledene

Rate this book
They were looking for their dream home. They found a nightmare.

In 1886, Ingledene was the scene of the brutal deaths of a greengrocer and his wife at each other's hands. 138 years later, the house had lain empty for almost a decade with nobody willing to enter the dark and rotting home. That is until author River Johnson and her husband Cole arrive in the Devon town of Smallwood, looking for their ideal home. Their budget is far smaller than the average property values, but when Cole notices a joint listing for Ingledene and the greengrocers in the high street, the price is too good to pass up.

After a strange encounter with the house's caretaker, River begins to feel as if something is very wrong with the house. Over the next few days, she sees faces at the window, hears breathing in the darkness, and has an encounter with a mysterious man with an axe who vanishes before her eyes. A few days later while checking out the greengrocers, a warning is thrown through the shop window, warning them that they are in danger, and to leave as soon as possible.

But it may already be too late.

From the author of Eyes In The Dark, Horizon, and Little Nightmares, comes this British horror full of scares, jump scares and blood. Lots and lots of blood.

David W. Adams is the author of 16 dark and atmospheric novels spanning horror, sci-fi, and dark fantasy. Born in Wolverhampton, England in 1988 and raised in Telford, David took a non-traditional path, leaving formal education to work full-time, before discovering his passion for writing.

His debut collection of haunting short stories was published in early 2021, born from the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, his work has been praised for its emotional depth, chilling atmosphere, and cinematic storytelling.

In 2024, his sci-fi horror novel *Horizon* won AudiobookReviewer.com's award for Best Dystopian Novel, thanks in part to the gripping narration by frequent collaborator Brandon J. Peterson.

David now lives on the Isle of Portland in Dorset with his wife, Charlotte. In addition to writing, he designs book covers and reviews books on YouTube and TikTok, where he shares insights into the craft and the indie publishing world.

What a fantastic, thoroughly haunting short read! The ending was a big twist - even eventually knowing what was going to happen, it was like a car crash you just could not take your eyes off of. This was an impossible to put down slasher fest. I'd 100% recommend this book to anyone that enjoys the horror genre.

Wow, what can I say? This book was exactly what I needed and exactly what I expected from such a super talented author.
David delivers by the bucket load in this book.
The story keeps you gripped from the 1st to last page.
Blood, guts, ghosts and twist even i didn't see coming.
Well worth read if you like your book on the bloody side.

I'll prefix this by the phrase: "I don't like horror." However, I do like David's work and have read most of his dark sci-fi output, which is horror-adjacent.
Because horror keeps me awake at night (do not interrupt my eight hours!) I read this in the mornings before work. It was a great way of stopping me from falling asleep at my desk.
It is a proper ghost story. The wronged man, the recurring curse of the gothic house, the scrapes in the night, the shadowy figures at the edge of vision. And it is so well written, descriptive, fast-paced with a satisfying, but unexpected, conclusion. Loved it, but I'm now scared of greengrocers.

Why you should never buy a house unseen!

I'll start this by saying I don't normally read horror. However, I love David W.Adams' other books, so I knew I'd read this anyway. I'm SO glad I did. Sure, it's gory, creepy, and people die, but it's advertised as a classic British horror, and that's exactly what you get. The story is engaging, and I whisked through, absolutely wanting to know what was going to happen next. Brilliant.
5 stars to both writer and narrator (I listened to the audiobook whilst reading the ebook).

Brilliant book! Follows a couple who move into a house with a dark history that refuses to let go of those in the present. If you enjoy classic horror, this will be an instant hit for you (with an axe 👀🪓).
