this was a lot more dark, emotional, and angsty then i thought it would be. it also did not go the way i wanted it to go after the book 1 ending but everything that happened is for the plot so i guess it’s forgivable. i really think a lot of people would enjoy the way the book was written because it gives the slow burn with all the tension but i’m not a fan of those things in books. yes, even if they are in some high stake fantasies. AND THAT ENDING? it gave ouabh 2 so hard that i don’t know what to do with myself because book 3 just doesn’t exist.

What a mindf*ck in the best way possible.

The Dread Prince took this series to the next level. It's darker, more emotional, the magic is more complex, and as the story progresses you are uncovering the truth in real time through the characters.

There are some big plot twists and the way they play out had me hopeful and then questioning and then devastated, back to hopeful.

Lauren excellently captures the struggle of grief, loss, and an imbalanced/abusive relationship through Maeve. The most simple way I can think to explain the complexities of Maeve's journey is that she is essentially experiencing an identity crisis in such a deep and life alternating way, based on most of her reality being so far outside of her control as it once was.

Not only does Maeve's perspective leave you reeling, but Mal's descent into losing himself while trying to save their world is quite heartbreaking, but also unsettling because for so much of this book it can really be hard to understand what is the true him and what isn't.

One of the bigger surprises for me was how much I like Reeve. His role was unexpected but made perfect sense when you read into some of the Easter eggs from The Dread Descendant. I need more of that side of the story.

This is truly such a well done, gripping fantasy that absolutely consumed me.

“I never wanted a crown. If one thing in my life I did desire, it was only her.”

I have so much to say. This won’t go into super detailed spoilers, but it’ll hint at some things that go down, so be warned!!!
————————————————————————————————

I genuinely cannot explain how wild of a read this was. At absolutely no point did I know where the story was going. And I freaking loved it—loved that I was conflicted and equally thrilled, I think, ninety percent of this read. I got the ARC in the mail a day ago and I’m already done, if that tells you anything!

Okay, so we start off 6 months post tDD, and I’m kind of pissed off at Mal from the last book. He was way too closed off (not in a cute way, in my opinion) and didn’t seem like he even saw Maeve as a person, not to mention he had like zero morality most of the time. But across the first 33% of this book, I’m totally loving him. He’s thoughtful and still his cold self but has enough of what a girl needs in a male MC.

Now, keep in mind that I am coming off of the Dread Descendant being full on team Reeve. I still kind of am…

“Even with daggers in her eyes, she was radiant. ‘She’s beautiful,’ whispered Mely, her eyes lit with awe.

A smile tugged at the corner of Reeve‘s mouth. ‘That she is.’”

This high lord obviously really wants to help her, but she just cannot ever choose herself. This is my biggest bone to pick with Maeve. I’m not saying it should’ve been done differently because it’s not my story to write, and I do understand why it was done this way, but I was so mad that Maeve never stood up for herself. Though, admittedly, I loved not being able to mentally will the MC to do what I wanted her to. People in this narrative are not dancing the stereotypical plot line that most stories adhere to.

However, some of the things that happened to her… I would be traumatised for life and then some. And she never held it against Mal. LIKE WHAT!?? And yes, I understand that technically it was Shadow—but was all of it her? Or was it also a bit of him, too? I mean, I have no clue, and it's ruining me. Maeve is genuinely so forgiving and loyal to the point where I wanted to jump out my window. I love the old Mal, but I could never put up with what he became if put in Maeve’s place. She's both inspiring and infuriating.

“‘Please,’ she said softly. ‘I cannot lose you. Please let me help you fight the darkness. I never intended for you to carry this burden alone.’” 😭😭😭😭

I can’t tell where this story is going at all, and I’m scared because, at points in this novel, I was SO sad for Maeve, Mal, and Reeve. I don’t even know what I want anymore.

Will she end up in Aterna? Can she save Mal? And even so, I don’t know, as a reader, if I can forgive him for some of the crap he pulled. The stuff with the ring? The jab about her father before the duel? I mean, he’s so abusive at points I'm losing my respect for Maeve just reading it. I just need to know if any of his antics were from his true self becoming totally unhinged or if it was all the poison from the Dread Lands.

(One more Reeve/ Maeve quote—I’m sorry; I’m terrible)
“‘I hope you think that of me to come. But I don’t foresee it.’

He smiled. ‘Now you are a prophet?’

‘You have an eternity to mock me,’ she said with a small laugh. 'Take the day off.’”

Also, I have no clue where this son came from, and I’m still very confused about the timeline with that, but I absolutely adore him. I adore all of them, honestly. And I love how so many secrets are still being kept. Uncovering them is the best part about reading.

Now, I think if it was a typical series, you would see Mal fall to the darkness, and Maeve end up fated with Reeve. But really, none of this has been typical. I also think Leake is a sucker (in the best way) for saving the unredeemable, so perhaps Mal will make it (this is a plea). Though, again, knowing who he was before Shadow…I feel like he would never forgive himself for what he did under her influence.

Anyway, this was phenomenal. Seriously, one of the most entertaining books I've read this year. Maybe a bit heavy on the words 'softly' and 'coolly' as adjectives, but it absolutely did not get in the way of the story. The dialogue was pristine and not at all cheesy, and I have no complaints because it was a completely original read.

Y’all this ARC read was one of my most anticipated reads of 2025 and it did not disappoint! I felt every possible emotion while reading this - I went from giggling and kicking my feet then screaming at the book then tearing up. Mal and Maeve’s story is full of dark twists and turns and it’s a brutal tale that has you begging for more. Maeve’s journey through grief was so well done and really captured the raw, heart-wrenching nature of loss. The way she grapples with her emotions while navigating a world full of danger, betrayal, and impossible choices is powerful. Mal, as a character, is equally complex—his darkness and conflicting desires make him impossible to forget. Their chemistry is electric, and the tension between them kept me on the edge of my seat. The world-building is rich and immersive, with a depth that made me feel like I was living in the pages alongside them.

This book is intense, unpredictable, and unapologetically fierce. Lauren Cate Leake has crafted a story that is both captivating and emotionally stirring, leaving you thinking long after you’ve turned the last page. If you’re into stories full of suspense, forbidden love, and characters you can’t help but root for—even when they’re doing things you shouldn’t be rooting for—The Dread Prince is a must-read. Can’t wait for everyone to dive into this dark, twisted world!

✨ ARC Review ✨
The Dread Prince by @writer_lc

5 ⭐️ 1.5 🌶️

WOW okay. Where book one was written for the Tom Riddle girlies, this one feels like it was written for the Sauron girlies.

“This book is much darker than the first. If you thought these characters were morally grey before, they are now pitch black.”

This book was so wild and I don’t think I expected a single turn of events! There was a singular surprise that I might’ve seen coming, but most certainly not to the extent that it was. (And like, I’m just going to be off in my corner shipping these characters). Book two was a thrilling adventure that keeps you conflicted but you keep reading anyway.

It is frequently hard to keep the second book of a series as captivating as the first, but Lauren Leake did such an amazing job here. I absolutely cannot wait to see where she goes with the next book!

The first of the series, The Dread Descendant is available now on KU and paperback/hardback. This book, The Dread Prince, will be available in the same formats on January 30!

3⭐️ Again— eating up the concept. Love the story. Need to know what happens next. But the author is SO LAZY jfc. Like did you even give it one (1) proof read????? There are so many misspellings, grammatical errors, and again….. how are we spelling people’s names wrong… they’re your own characters!!!!! A lot darker than the first but.. I like it

Can I rate this more than 5 stars? ♾️⭐️

This book was life-altering—my brain chemistry has officially been changed. The story grabs you and doesn’t let go. It has you in an emotional chokehold from page one. The characters- I loved them, hated them, and stayed absolutely addicted to every single one.

The Dread Prince is book two in the Dread Descendant series, so fair warning: spoilers ahead if you haven’t read book one!

The story picks up after Maeve’s father dies, and one of the central themes revolves around grappling with identity and grief after such a huge loss. There’s also themes of manipulation. I have multiple Kindle notes like “I don’t know how I feel about Mal coercing her…” and “WTF, Mal?” But then… CHAPTER 56. AHHHHH. That’s all I’ll say. 🥲🤯😭 (Okay, I’m done.) but…. 😭😭😭

Also, the playlist? Everything.

I am dying a little inside waiting for the next book.

Mal was just annoying me in this book and almost made me DNF it, it felt like the author was trying to write a morally gray character but fell extremely flat. Anyways, I really hope Reeve ends up being end game, which is the only reason why I will read the next book. I had such high hopes for this series but so far it’s not looking good…

5 ⭐️ Wow that was INTENSE! The author was not kidding when she said this one was going to be DARK. I’m in awe of the world-building and the magical world that she has created and built up in this second book.

And the romance?! PLS I’M SCREAMING at the yearning and tension. This is how you do romantasy. 👏

If you had any doubts with the first book, make no mistake... Lauren has put you in your place with this one.

If Melissa K Roerich, JK Rowling, and Sarah J Maas had a baby it would be this book.
Take the darkness from the Legacy Series, the magic from Harry Potter, and the romantasy portion of ACOMAF and you get this book.🤌

🎉 Book #2 - with Book #3 announced!

First off, I was Team Mal at the end of Book #1… but now, I’m not so sure. Mal is battling a darkness in the Dread Lands, so is this new attitude his or the shadows?! NO ONE knows!

Either way, Maeve is a brilliantly and beautifully written character with ALL of the flaws and grit. I 💙 her! By the way, Lauren is THE SWEETEST, so you should give her book a try for that reason alone! 5/5 stars!

I was really impressed with this sequel. There were a lot more moving parts here and Maeve and Mal’s relationship shifting was both captivating and hard to watch.

I loved all of the world building and slowly seeing Mal’s madness seep in.

The plot twists are very good, though it’s a tad hard for me to keep up with all of the new and further revelations.

I don’t think was dark like was expecting, but I suppose in its own way, when it came to her grief and the unwinding of her and Mal’s innocence as school children.

Their relationship takes a much more toxic turn, and you can’t help but root for Maeve to save him. But at what cost to her own sanity?

So interested to see how this ends.

The day I got my ARC I was stunned beyond words. I was having a really rough day and I cried when I saw the email. I was looking forward to this drop for a while. It took me awhile this time around (do to personal things), but i finally got to the end! There are so many surprises and some i definitely did not expect. The authors writing is a tad different than i’m used to, but the way she captivates the story is amazing in the end. i can’t wait to see what’s in store for the third!

This book 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I flew through this ARC - simply could not put it down. Every time I thought I knew where the plot was going it would twist and turn in ways I couldn’t expect. The story is so captivating and the characters are written so well. And that ending!? Insane. I fear I need the next book immediately. Everyone needs to read this well-crafted series.

Just realized that now that I finished this book, I have to WAIT again. And for that, Lauren. You’re on my list.

Anyways, pause here if you don’t want any light (nothing cray. I promise) spoilery chatter because tbh this book gave me trauma and I loved it and I refuse to leave anything out.

First things first, Maeve. You sweet, nasty little thing. I adore you. Bloodthirsty, ruthless, loyal, cunning - Maeve, my slytherin sister, if you have no fans, I am dead.

Reeve? Raw. Next question. (Read: ily shadow wing daddy)

Mal, complex. The writing that allowed you to literally watch his psyche snap in half SPECTACULAR. Masterful. Nuanced and heartbreaking.

This is on some SJM complexity level high fantasy magical system, and not only that, it was executed with precision and was FANTASTIC. no trailing leads, nothing I didn’t think was going to carry forward into the storyline. If it was confusing, it was foreshadowing or it was something that was coming that you couldn’t understand until they understood.

This is definitely high fantasy. Romance is a secondary or even third plot line in this book, light on 🌶️ unless it’s needed to make sense for the scene. Masterful writing from Lauren Cate Leake on this one. Seriously. Masterful. Best read of 2025 so far.

"Because you taste like victory, Maeve. But watching you yearn for my touch makes me want to start a war."
I could write paragraphs about this book series, if I could give both the first and second book infinite stars I would. I am new to Goodreads and I haven't really felt to leave more than star reviews so far this year, but I have to write something for this book and this series as a whole. I read the Dread Descendant back in November of 2024 and it climbed its way to being in my top 10 book series of all time. I knew as soon as I heard the love interest Malachite was based on Tom Riddle from Harry Potter, and as a Slytherin myself I knew I had to read this book. Maeve and Mal truly have a unique relationship to me compared to what I see in other books of this nature. For the first book and the first half of the second book Maeve leans and revels in the darkness with Mal, but as time goes on *spoiler* that changes. I just love the vibe that they give, they are so obsessed with each other and both as morally grey as each other, and just as powerful that they create a powerful couple that many in the book fear to stand against. It's giving very much, let's rule the world together. This series very much took the aspects that I loved about Harry Potter, I was always the most fascinated with the dark side of that series or the dark arts, but we don't get to see a lot of it in my opinion since we are following Harry the protagonist who is the "hero" and "good guy" of the story. However, this series took those aspects that I wanted more of, and Lauren added aspects to the story making it her own and that made it even better. All of those things stirred together have made this series perfect for me. I am going to be left with a Maeve and Mal sized hole in my heart when the Dread King releases and the series comes to an end.

*Major Spoilers from here on out as I will talk about the second book more, if you do not want to be spoiled please do not read onwards*

Shout out to Lauren Cate Leake for giving me an e-arc of this book!

Wow was this book WORTH THE WAIT. I thought the first book, The Dread Descendant, was good. I enjoyed the book and the magic system and was definitely interested in reading book 2. I did not realize just how much book 2 was going to wreck me...

I really enjoyed this read as it explored a lot more of what makes this series interesting. Not only did we get to see more of the combative magic but we got to explore the world of the Dread Lands. I loved that part. Understanding more about Dread magic and Malachite's powers but also these famous Dread Lands and how the movement of magicals to this world was important was so interesting. I thought that getting to step into that world as well as the other areas such as Aterna, was so good.

This book really made me feel for Maeve. I think she was put through absolute hell at the end of book one and this book really allowed us a glimpse into her grief and her isolation after that. I think watching her build herself back up in this book, with the encouragement of those around her was really important and will get her into the right space for the next book.

Mal, Mal, Mal. I have a love-hate relationship with Malachite Peur but this book really showed so much more to him. I loved the tender moments he had with Maeve (while he could...👀) but then also I was just downright worried about him! I mean he goes through a lot in this book and sacrifices himself to hopefully save the Dread Lands but man does that land him in some hot water... those green eyes. IYKYK. I am WORRIED about him and I am absolutely dying to see what happens next to our all-powerful prince.

Special mention to my favorite.. Reeve. I hope this isn't the last we see of him and his all powerful skills. I mean there was some serious tension with Reeve in this book and I am worried about where his story goes next too. But some of the revelations about Reeve.. not to spoil anything but really pleased me lol.

Overall, definitely my favorite of the series so far and had me begging for more. I am so interested in what Maeve has cooking up for book 3 because I am just not sure what's going to happen... and I love that about this book. Please make sure to read any trigger warnings prior to reading this book as it does explore some darker themes!

“I’d move mountains if they blocked your view, Little Viper.”

Review:

This was one of my most anticipated reads this year and it didn’t disappoint! The amount of twists this book took me on was wild! I’m still processing everything but wow, if you are considering starting this series just do it! You won’t regret it! This book takes you in a different direction than the first in the best way, it mainly takes place in the mysterious dread lands where Maeve and Mal are trying to make the land habitable while also balancing the political ups and downs of leaving earth and starting their own realm. Maeve has been through so much in book one and i loved seeing her build herself back up in this book. The way Malachite and Reeve butt heads the whole book was perfection! And the world building in this book was so vivid and immersive! If you love

✨ witchy magic
💚 romance and tension
🐍 slitheren boys / villain gets the girl
🗡️ duels, danger and magical quests
🌪️ so many twists and cliffhangers

Then you will love this book!!!

This book was somehow even better than the first. I didn’t think it would be possible. It was captivating and heartbreaking. I fell more in love with Mal in this book than I thought possible. Even though we saw Mal at his worst in this book, I will continue to protect him with my life. And Maeve. Poor Maeve. My heart was breaking for her throughout this entire book but she really proved how strong she was and could be for everyone.

Ok and that PLOT TWIST?! I think my heart actually fell into my stomach. I was not ready. I hated how much I loved it. If you have read it, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

I need book 3 asap. I can’t wait to read it but am also scared about what Lauren is going to throw at us. This series is becoming one of my favorites ever.
Oh, and team Mal. Any other answer is not accepted in this house.

I am FERALLLLL!!!!!!

These books are creeping their way into some of my favorites of all time. The world building and getting a look into the other planets and realms had me awestruck. There’s additionally some really intense character development throughout this journey, we see Mal and Maeve dive deeper into the villainous darkness as chaos ensues. The magic system is so intricate and interesting I simply couldn’t get enough.

There were multiple twists and turns I didn’t see coming, and hot damn am I already chomping at the bit for more. If you love villains, dark fantasy, shadow magic, banter, and world to completely immerse yourself in… this series is the answer.

6 gold stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️//🌶️🌶️.5

Much better than the first, the only thing that truly caught me by surprise was Reeve's final move on the chessboard and even then I'm mad because I should've expected it. The flow was more natural in this book which is funny because it's stated time and time again just how oddly time moves between worlds but nothing felt jarring as things progressed. I'm glad I decided to pick this one up instead of dropping the series after the first book and as always, I'm curious as to what Maeve will do next.
