If you are considering your professional career towards Designer/Architect role “vSphere Design Best Practices” would be a great book to start . it will provide you what you need to make the first step!

This book collects and organize all the technical topics that a vSphere Architect needs to consider before diving into the design of a new infrastructure

It is quite difficult to learn through design by way of a book, as every customer has a unique requirements, and constraints. The book guides you what is necessary to identify various design elements and apply them for a virtual infrastructure. It offers enough of a high level overview that it does not overwhelm you with vSphere design.
