There’s just something about a Maggie Sunseri vampire book that is just *chef’s kiss* Firstly, I want to thank the author for the gifted arc! I was on the arc team for her other duet set in the same world, so I was ECSTATIC to be approved for her street team!
This book is a solid mix between dark romance and fantasy, but the emphasis is definitely more on the romance. I absolutely LOVE a stalker romance—add vampires and I’m SOLD. For some reason, stalker romances are like the only time I like insta-love/insta-lust. As usual, the spice was fantastic and kinks are handled responsibly.
Our FMC Evie is an angel baby who has dealt with a lot of trauma. Some of her decisions and actions did annoy me at times, but they made sense given her past experiences and trauma. I can’t wait to see her feminine rage era in the next book.
Kylo was great too—he was such a sharp contrast to Jacob and truly became everything Evie needed. I’m always a sucker for a big scary guy who’s just a big softie for the girl they love.
I’m already looking forward to the next book because that ending has me STRESSED. I can’t wait to see where the rest of this story goes!!

AHHH I DID NOT REALIZE THIS WAS BOOK ONE IN A SERIES AND IT ENDED ON A CLIFFHANGER ?!?! SEND HELP 🥺 I need more Evie & Kylo immediately.
Evie, our half-witch, half-mortal fmc was kind and lovely. I think her inner turmoil is sooo relatable. She has endless potential, just barely scratching the surface of her powers, but always putting others before herself. And Kylo is the perfect blend of obsessive, feral and dominant that I love in an mmc. Lethal and dark vampire with shadow powers? Yes please. From the minute Evie catches his attention, he fixates on her. He’s drawn to her, deciding he’ll stop at nothing to be with her. HAWT. But at the same time, he’s so nurturing to her. It’s at odds with his brutal and calculating nature as he works to fight against the evil forces growing in their city.
These two had such a delicious battle of wills 😈 the tension was excellent. The spice had me blushing !!!! THE PRAISE? THE DEGRADATION? Ahhh. I’m getting flustered just thinking about it. Evie was a top tier brat sub for Kylo lmao. And a man who performs aftercare is a man after my own heart.
After the way things end here for them with her being drawn more into his world and the growing conflicts between vampires that threaten the city, I can see this story hitting the fan in crazy ways. I’m ready for book two and more of this world STAT.

DNF at 74% just felt like I kept waiting for something interesting to happen the entire time but nothing ever happened. Also if I come across one more book with spitting into mouths & as play, I quit.

Was the romance built on mutual trust, respect, experiences, or even just common interests? Also no
Was the dialogue realistic and not just very long detailed monologues about how amazing the FMC is? Nope
Did this need to be 500+ pages when the same story could have been told in half of that? Not at all
But did I have fun? Yes, yes I did. The smut was smutting

How do I even start this review? This if my first official romantasy book; impressed is an understatement. This book exceeded every expectation I had. I was so ingulfed in this book I didn't even realize I was close to finishing. This is a duet so it does end on a cliffhanger. Stressful isn't even the word for the end lol.
This book is probably the darker portion; it takes you through our fmc's absolute heartbreaking childhood and her defense mechanisms while simultaneously holding down her real power. To dealing with secrets, betrayal, and power. This book has so much realness and depth it became overwhelmingly beautiful. By the end of the book you're unbearably attached to Kylo, Evie, Idris, and Mena. The pull between Kylo and Evie is magnetic, you'll never see a love so gorgeous. Despite their ups and downs they will never be free from one another. There destined together forever. DON’t even get me started on the smut, let’s just say “shadows” are involved..
If you're looking for a read that will ultimately drag you so far down into their world you become sad to put the book down; this is the one!

That cliffhanger?!!!
Oh my gosh, this book was everything I loved the representation of generational trauma in here. Our shadow wielding Vampire MMC Kylo was so endearing and a total cinnamon roll for the FMC Evie. we love a man that respects boundaries, is patient & helps heal the FMC’s trauma.
Evie our FMC is a half witch with secrets. She and her brother have been on the run for years but they managed to start a new and safe-ish life after escaping Lillian‘s cult.
She’s known nothing but trauma, being used, and emotionally abused her entire life so trust does not come easy for her but when our MMC Kylo crosses paths with her. He instantly becomes obsessed And the way he takes care of her, heals her and breaks down her walls was everything.
The only issue is while these 2 slowly start to fall for eachother, The Born Vampires have been pushing boundaries with the turned Vampires and hunting down chaos witches. This winds up putting our FMC Evie in danger and secrets start to unravel.
I cannot wait for Book 2 to see how Evie finally comes to terms with who she is and really comes into her power. That cliffhanger was insane. I need to know what happens next!

*seriously though* This is exactly the kind of book I’d normally black out and devour in one sitting, but unfortunately, my lungs decided to go for a second round of pneumonia this year. (Aspiration this time—at least it’s switching things up!) It’s only May, y’all. Pray for my immune system because she clearly is working through some things

Maggie Sunseri writes the best vampire books. Period. I absolutely loved the Eternal Obsession duet(one of my favorite series of 2025) but as soon as I started reading Marked by Masks and Secrets I immediately knew this was going to be my new favorite of her books.
The book follows Evie, a half human, half witch on the run that's dealt with and experienced an abundance of trauma that she struggles to confront. Along with Evie, there's Kylo, (obsessed with this name for an mmc, iykyk) the vampire shadow daddy that is instantly obsessed with Evie the second he lays eyes on her. I loved that the story started out in Kylo’s pov because I love a man obsessed and I was hooked instantly. The mystery woven within the story had me so intrigued that I couldn't put the book down because I had to know what was gonna happen.
Maggie created another masterpiece that blends dark romance, suspense and fantasy in such an interesting and beautiful way. The characters she creates have such a real depth to them, plus the chemistry between Evie and Kylo was SO good. The banter, the push and pull dynamic, and the spice was beyond good. Maggie Sunseri has my favorite spice scenes of any fantasy book I’ve read without a doubt.
10/10. 5 stars. Perfect.

I feel not one ounce of shame or embarrassment for being absolutely in love with these books. Sure, maybe I am more aware of the guilty pleasure I have for the sinister side of myself, but I can’t hate myself for it. Maggie is unmatched in her ability to develop a highly possessive vampire (Rune was my first love in her work) and I’m here for it 100%. Her books are always fun to read, perhaps lacking the depth I long for most of the time, but enrapturing nonetheless 😌
Kylo is a great continuation of this morally grey framework started by Rune, and I enjoy the way Maggie entangles Rune’s story into this one. They are very similar in nature but also fundamentally different, with a much darker FMC (I enjoyed Evie as well, even if she’s a little crazy at times). It’s essentially a retelling of her first series but as if it was another world entirely. A possessive vampire always brings me back to the first vampire love I ever had, Edward Cullen. Nostalgic in ways, but as an adult now, I am more thrilled with the new nature.
Kylo is a great continuation of this morally grey framework started by Rune, and I enjoy the way Maggie entangles Rune’s story into this one. They are very similar in nature but also fundamentally different, with a much darker FMC (I enjoyed Evie as well, even if she’s a little crazy at times). It’s essentially a retelling of her first series but as if it was another world entirely. A possessive vampire always brings me back to the first vampire love I ever had, Edward Cullen. Thank you to the author for providing me with e-ARC of the book. I am choosing to leave a review, and all my thoughts are my own honest ones.
This was a pleasant surprise. I honestly signed up for this so long ago because I liked the tropes and then forgot about it. I went into this blind and I had fun!
The magic, world, and its politics were fascinating. There is such a unique take on witchcraft, spiritual guidance, and an interesting dip into cults. The power struggle between the turned and born vampires as well as the acts of resistance to tear down the status quo had me so invested. I have quite a few quotes highlighted about the turmoil of their world that can definitely apply to ours at the moment too.
Evie is a soft hearted FMC who likes to tend to her garden, read romance books and abhors violence. She loves her brother and adopted grandmother and wants for nothing but their safety and happiness. But Evie has a dark past and even deeper dark tendencies when it comes to her magic. She chooses to suppress her magic and rage out of fear of what she will become. However, her interactions with a certain Vampire that likes to lurk in the shadows, has her stepping toward a path that she swore she would never walk.
Kylo is deliciously unhinged but still noble in his pursuits to protect the humans and eradicate wealthy born vampire corruption.His thoughts and discussions with Evie were quite philosophical and he was often such a beloved sweetie pie. But that being said, this man is crazy possessive and absolutely obsessed with Evie to the point of being very UNHINGED. Did I mention that he is a hot masked turned vampire leader that hunts other vampires who wields shadows??? LIKE HELLO?? I loved me a masked tortured hot morally grey man every time. The romance was a bit more on the insta-lust side, but I actually have no complaints (I think I needed a fast quick romance given the state of the world). Although things were fast paced in a way, there were plenty of sweet moments filled with vulnerability and honesty. The spice was hot and yet full of kinks and consent. We love to see it.
This one ended on a cliffhanger and I will be tuning in for the next one to see how things unravel.
This was a pleasant surprise. I honestly signed up for this so long ago because I liked the tropes and then forgot about it. I went into this blind and I had fun!
The magic, world, and its politics were fascinating. There is such a unique take on witchcraft, spiritual guidance, and an interesting dip into cults. The power struggle between the turned and born vampires as well as the acts of resistance to tear down the status quo had me so invested. I have quite a few quotes highlighted about the turmoil of their world that can definitely apply to ours at the moment too.
Evie is a soft hearted FMC who likes to tend to her garden, read romance books and abhors violence. She loves her brother and adopted grandmother and wants for nothing but their safety and happiness. But Evie has a dark past and even deeper dark tendencies when it comes to her magic. She chooses to suppress her magic and rage out of fear of what she will become. However, her interactions with a certain Vampire that likes to lurk in the shadows, has her stepping toward a path that she swore she would never walk.
Kylo is deliciously unhinged but still noble in his pursuits to protect the humans and eradicate wealthy born vampire corruption.His thoughts and discussions with Evie were quite philosophical and he was often such a beloved sweetie pie. But that being said, this man is crazy possessive and absolutely obsessed with Evie to the point of being very UNHINGED. Did I mention that he is a hot masked turned vampire leader that hunts other vampires who wields shadows??? LIKE HELLO?? I loved me a masked tortured hot morally grey man every time. Noteworthy: Book 1 of a duet. Heavy on the obsessed stalker vibes. Check TWs.
This is the first book of Maggie's that I've read, and it took me a bit to get used to her writing style. It did feel like we were plopped right down into the midway point of the start of the story. Like we needed softer introductions, especially for Kylo. Just right into it. That made it tough for me to connect and buy in right away. That being said, once I did connect, I was all in. It took me 3 days to read the first half and 1 night to read the second half. I feel like I say this for most fantasy style books, though. That pesky but necessary world building.
The FMC Evie was a very layered character. It's easy to get as frustrated with her as she gets with herself. We are missing parts of her story until it unfolds as we go along, so I think that contributes to it. I understood why she latched onto things (fear, protecting her family, self degradation, Kylo). I hope she has more growth in the next book and shows more self-reliance for her own benefit, not just as a self-sacrifice.
The MMC Kylo was a lot. Like a lot a lot. His push and pull between control and nurture gave me whiplash at times. It was like he had 2 personalities. But I think it's the demons he battles with due to his past trauma and maybe a little OCD. I hope his character growth shows a better balance of these two extremes or at least a smoother transition between the two moods. Merge those personalities, babe.
I would recommend this book for anyone looking for vampires and witches, ferally obsessed MMCs, and duets which provide a quicker read rather than long series.

Maggie Sunseri knows how to write an obsessed, stalking man (or vampire) who we adore. I’m a huge fan of Maggie’s Lost Witches of Aradia series and the first duet, the Eternal Obsession duet, so I was THRILLED to receive a prepublished ebook copy of book 1 in the Everlasting Possession duet.
This is set in the same world as the first duet, and Kylo has a ton of similarities to Rune my book boyfriend. Rune is still #1 in my book, but I actually enjoyed Evie’s character even more than Scarlett. Maggie knows how to write witches too, being a witch herself. Evie’s identify as a witch and her character arc in this book made me absolutely adore her. I also really loved reading Evie’s character growth after her experience with her scumbag ex because so many of us, myself included, have previously dated someone who puts us down and tries to dull our lights. I cannot wait to see her in book 2 and her complete character arc.
I also really enjoyed the political themes in this book. I noticed a few parallels between our current political climate, and it made me appreciate Maggie even more as an author.
The smut was also SMUTTING in this book. Slide for some of my favorite quotes. My FAVORITE microtrope comes up in this book where the MMC washes the FMCs hair 🥹. I’m soooo ready for book 2 after that cliffhanger ending.

Phew 😮💨! I love Maggie’s writing style SO MUCH! I was so impressed with this book! When it comes to vampire romantasy she is my QUEEN 👸🏼.
I will admit- Evie did irritate me sometimes - her naivety & weakness really irked me. Granted, she has A LOT of trauma! But I was really hoping she’d come into her own and stop being so negative about her magick & herself. I wanted to see her really stick up for herself & be a capable badass FMC! I’m hoping that delivers in book 2! Although, I tend to be picky about FMCs so this is no fault of Maggie’s.
Kylo! OHHH KYLO! Had me clutching my pearls. He’s the perfect morally grey MMC! So delicious. I am in love with him 😈.
This book had many MANY spicy scenes that had my jaw on the floor! I couldn’t get enough- Maggie really knows how to bring it 🤣. The plot was amazing! I didn’t find it too predictable- the cliffhanger was bearable 🤪. And it wasn’t really a slow burn which was nice- their relationship was INTENSE! And moved pretty fast.
I cannot wait for book 2! I will try my best to be patient 🤣

Now that I have collected my thoughts and feelings about this book LOL. I absolutely devoured this book (as per the read in 24hrs lmao)
Honestly, I really enjoyed both main characters in this book and their story. I am absolutely obsessed with Kylo and need more of him NOW (respectfully). I loved Evie's bratty side, especially in the spicy scenes. I DEVOURED the spicy scenes, Maggie left no crumbs in those scenes. I cannot wait to dive into the second book later this year and learn more about the characters and their story.
The praise was SOOO good.
If you are looking for a new dark romantasy (vampire x witch), stalker MMC, praise, virgin FMC, MMC that LOVES gift giving, I definitely recommend reading this!

thank you so much maggie for giving me the chance to arc read 🖤 i actually inhaled in this book and tried to drag it out as much as i could omg 😩 i was immediately sucked in from the very beginning.
this is a dark romantasy, vampire shadow daddy mmc, innocent witch fmc, stalker, rival dominance, magic, spells, shadow play, fear play, praise and degradation, bondage, shifters, protective, obsessive, possessive, blood bonding, found family, cliffhanger, and dual pov !!
since her childhood, evie has spent every day running from her past and who she really is. her sole purpose was the get her and her brother out of that abusive household. they ended up in a mortal run city protected by the very beings evie grew up hating. but she’s still running from herself. she wants to be better and wants to blend in. she changes everything about her appearance and wears pretty bright colors. they are grown up now and she spends her days practicing magic with the plants while her brother attends university. she is half human and half witch and wants to use her magic to do good. evie holds herself back and bottle up her magic whenever she feels like she might explode. she never had proper training or knowledge about what her magic can do.
when she feels that she’s being stalked, she goes toe to toe turning her life around with this sexy shadow daddy vampire kylo 🤭 the moment he met her, he was instantly obsessed. this man is all about evie omg !! their push and pull dynamic was so damn hot i literally needed to take breather 😮💨 their chemistry is off the charts and the way he’s so protective over her actually had me slipping and stumbling. kylo doesn’t stop approaching evie, even when she says she hates him. she’s his to use, to tease, to bicker with, to own. everything that came out of this man’s mouth had me falling so hard like i would’ve folded so fast if i was evie honestly 😭 he’s a walking red flag but HEAR ME OUT !!! this man literally saw how evie would take the barest of minimum and lower her standards and he would not have it. kylo showed evie that everything she was asking for doesn’t have to be earned and show be given freely, especially from people who should’ve loved her unconditionally. he taught her so much about herself that she didn’t even know were there. he gave her every bit of himself, even when she was holding back 🫀
i’m so excited for book two !! maggie’s writing is so easy to pick up. this was such an amazing read. the world building was super easy and the terms “born” and “turned” was perfectly used to describe the differences between kylo’s vampire family and their rivals. this was everything i needed to fall in love with both the mmc and fmc !!

I really enjoyed the back & forth between Evie & Kylo, the wit & sarcasm just worked! It’s not quite enemies to lovers but there’s a bit of the flavour there, at least on Evie’s side. I get it though, because no kidding, he kinda is a walking red flag.. but I’ll allow it 👀😅 (it was the hair brushing for me.. *swoon*)
I actually can’t wait for book two, because I still feel like there’s more to Kylo we haven’t seen yet. Although he’s definitely not one dimensional in this first entry. I would really like to see Evie bring her strength in the next book as well.

I actually can’t wait for book two, because I still feel like there’s more to Kylo we haven’t seen yet. Although he’s definitely not one dimensional in this first entry. I would really like to see Evie bring her strength in the next book as well.
Speaking of book two, I NEED IT RIGHT NOW.

Dr. Smut's Checklist Book Review: Marked by Masks and Secrets by Maggie Sunseri
1. Trigger warnings: 1/1 point.
This book delivered every single trigger warning my little black heart craves. We got prior trauma that shaped the characters and gave them depth, we got the most delicious touch-her-and- energy, and, best of all, we got a glorious buffet of k!nk play.
It was filthy. It was fun. It was delicious.
Full points for feeding my darkness.
2. Characters: 0/75 of 1 point.
At first, I was worried. Evie was meek, letting the men in her life walk all over her... and then this Vampire Dom shows up and starts bossing her around, and the feminist in me was screaming.
BUT.
This man worships her. He helps her realize how powerful, badass, and worthy she is. He gives her space to grow, to explore her strength and her k!nks, safely and on her terms.
That’s why it’s getting 0.75 out of 1 point for Characters. I’m expecting some more badassery from Evie in book 2 and then we can give her the whole point
3. Plot: 1/1 points
This book has it all—Vampires, Witches, and Humans, oh my! And it’s not just vibes for the sake of vibes. There’s political intrigue woven into the worldbuilding, layered power dynamics (both in and out of the bedroom), and stakes so high the literal fate of the world is on the line.
There’s strategy, betrayal, lust, magic, and moments that made me gasp out loud.
Full point for plot. I was hooked from the first bite.
4. Smut: 1/1 points
I learned a new phrase recently that I am so excited to use... This book is a one-handed book. IYKYK.
The k!nk menu in this book was absolutely divine. The level, frequency, and variety of spice were impeccable, intentional, and hot as hell.
Mr. Smut enjoyed this book. Multiple times.
Full point for smut. No crumbs left.
5. Fun-to-read: 1/1 point.
I devoured this book. The fantasy world was rich, beautiful, and refreshingly unique. The plot had me in a chokehold from start to finish. The spice was absolutely delicious, deeply satisfying, and perfectly woven into the main story without ever stealing the spotlight.
I could not put it down. This book had me feral, emotionally invested, and fully obsessed.
Full point for plot. No notes... just vibes, pacing, and desperation for book 2!
Overall: Thats 4.75 out of 5 stars. And I'm giving it 4 chili peppers for spice because it was hot and heavy and k!nky and plentiful but it did not overwhelm the plot. I am obsessed and DESPERATE for book 2!
