HOLLYWOOD CRAZY: A HOLLYWOOD ALPHABET SERIES THRILLER
So you think things are crazy in Hollywood? Just wait, they’re about to get a lot crazier. Maybe it’s because LAPD homicide cop, Kate Sexton’s best friend, Natalie, has a new boyfriend who is brilliant but deranged. Or maybe it’s because Kate is now living with roommates and a landlord who make the Adams Family seem tame by comparison. Or maybe it’s because Kate’s canine partner, Bernie, is about to pay the price for some serious mischief. Or maybe it’s because Kate’s love life is like a rollercoaster, full of wild twists and turns.
A murdered Hollywood power couple, an escort service for the rich and powerful, an out of control canine partner, a love triangle, and a family secret that’s been buried for more than thirty years all combine to make Hollywood Crazy one of M.Z. Kelly’s most exciting thrill rides yet.
Hollywood Crazy continues the laugh-out-loud humor, crazy characters, and nail-biting excitement of the first two books in the series.
M.Z. Kelly is the author of three books in the Hollywood Alphabet Series Thrillers: Hollywood Assassin, Hollywood Blood, and Hollywood Crazy. And coming soon, the fourth book in the series, Hollywood Dirty!
M.Z. "Mack" Kelly, spent over thirty years in the field of law enforcement. He often draws on his experience working with gangs, violent offenders, and the court system in writing his books. He currently lives in Southern California, not too far from the streets of Hollywood that he writes about!
I like the series. The cases are interesting, lots of inter-connectivity. Kate's romantic relationships are hit and miss. Not sure where the author is going with it - unless it is another series in which the h waffles between 2 guys. I'm not sure I can take it. I'll try another one to see in which direction the author is taking it, then I'll decide.
I was debating between 3 and 4 stars on this one. I had some trouble getting into it and sticking with it. Although her friends say some funny things they are so over the top, it seems like someone is trying a little too hard. But I have also been struggling with actually reading a book during all of this coronavirus thing so maybe ‘it’s me and not you’. I’ve had an easier time with audible books. So I decided to give the 4 stars I gave to the other 2 books in the series because I think it’s more about the time in my life than it is about any problem with the book. And by the end I got into the story and it was a pretty good convoluted twisty story.
These are good stories with interesting plots hampered by secondary characters that are caricatures. Kate’s mother, Natalie, and Mo were humorous in the first book, tolerable in the second and flat-out annoying here. And the things they and other characters get into are too over the top to be believable.
This e-book also had a ton of printing errors, such as carrot for carat and sink for sync. There were also many commas where they weren’t needed. Such obvious goofs are unacceptable.
This book was too good for 1 star but not good enough for 2. So it really only deserves 1½ stars.
So I won’t be back for the next Kate Sexton adventure.
I've just got too many books to read to put up with this. The beginning was pretty bizarre, but I believe in reading to the end, with the assumption that a book has got to get better. However, I just couldn't do it with this one. I was already pretty irritated by the misuse of commas when I got to this at the 4% mark: "His diamond stud earrings looked to be at least a carrot each." I really hope that's not what the author intended to write, but I can't go on with the prospect of that many errors. Nope. Done.
Hollywood Crazy is another 5 Star novel from MZ Kelly’s Hollywood Alphabet series. It’s a mixture of thriller, drama & humor rolled into one novel. If you enjoyed any books from the Hollywood Alphabet series, you’ll enjoy this one.
A couple is murdered on their wedding night before they can even enjoy the honeymoon. Kate & her partner are called into the investigation. There are many twist and turns in this hilarious thriller. Nat & Mo add to the comic relief in this page turning thriller, with a new character or two. Kate’s love life always seems to be on the frizz just like her hair, but some people always seem to have bad luck in that department.
After reading three books in this series, MZ has made it into the top 10 authors I will read and tell others about. MZ has a great style of writing that I truly enjoy reading. If you had to put the series into a category, it would be in crime/mystery, but the humor just adds to the enjoyment of reading these novels. There are so many twist and turns, that you feel like you’ve just stepped off a 400 page rollercoaster.
I can’t look at my father-n-law the same way, since his name is BOB… Thanks MZ!!!!
I loved 'Hollywood Crazy'. It was full of adventure, mystery and humor. I loved the storyline. Kate was a great character. Her sense of humor had me laughing out loud at times. The characters were a great cast of personalities. Especially the roommates. Hilarious combination. The way the story played out was awesome. Quite a few surprising twists. Well written. M.Z. Kelly did an awesome job on writing this story. This is definitely a series I'll read more of. A great add to your tbr list. Recommended.
I like the series and especially like that it can be a stand alone. I had thought once Sexton finds some truth about her own personal mystery, she'd leave things alone but nope. She's determined. Some times stubborn characters annoy me so I'm surprised it didn't bother me how she is. Actually works for her. She is so obaessed witb her hair I want to see it. Can't be that bad. LoL I missed a book cause last Sexton book I read her friend Natalie was married and in this story Natalie has a boyfriend. Someone fill me in?
This is the third book I've read in the Hollywood alphabet thrillers. I really enjoy all of the characters. I adore Kate but her friends Natalie and Mo crack me up too!! I definitely plan to read the rest of the series. I also love all of the story lines so far in this series. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out 'who done it' I haven't figured these out yet!!! Good read!!
You won't be disappointed and you'll laugh and cry out loud! Great story, great plot twisrs that'll keep you guessing up to the end. And it has puppies too. How could you go wrong with a book that has puppies and vibrators?!?!? And a hair band. It has it all. Off to the next book in the series. Just buy them all at once so you don't have to waste time buying them one by one. ENJOY!!!!
Loved it, loved it, loved this book! If you are a California native, like myself (and even if you are not) you will love this book as much as I did! Fantastic characters, great plot and fantastic writing! What more could you want! Thank you so much for sharing this book with us. Sincerely, Diane Galburt
I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story. Characters are fun and unique. Most are believable. This book along with the series are worth your time and money. These stories keep you coming back for more and looking for reasons to read instead of doing anything else! Keep them coming.
I have enjoyed all of MZ Kelly's books of the character Kate Sexton. I love her dog Bernie too. It's enjoyable that characters in the earlier books do have a part of the present book plus there are new characters. There's always intrigue, mystery and suspense. You don't know who the killer is till the end. You don't want to put the book down til you're done!
Having now read three books in M.Z. Kelly’s Hollywood mystery series, all featuring Los Angeles Detective Kate Sexton and her canine partner Bernie, I feel as if I have actually read six books. For each Sexton novel, including Hollywood Crazy (the second word of each title begins with a consecutive letter of the alphabet), feels like two books, one pretty good and one quite dismal. Each novel in the series rises or falls depending on which of the author’s dual storylines and personas is predominant.
On the plus side, author Kelly, himself a Los Angeles cop, knows how to plot and write a compelling mystery. His storylines are complex albeit farfetched and hold the reader’s attention. In Hollywood Crazy, Sexton finds herself investigating the murder of a local power couple on their wedding night. He was an internet tycoon a la Mark Zuckerberg, while she was a rising local TV star. The actual killer is a professional hitman who calls himself the Wolf. It’s obvious that the Wolf is one of the many suspects Kate and the readers encounter in her investigation, and the mystery of discovering his true identity is quite well plotted. Kelly alternates between using Kate as a first-person narrator in most chapters to a few written in the third person from the Wolf’s point of view, an effective technique to build suspense. And, to give Kate even more reason to concentrate on the case, she soon realizes that these deaths are tied into a couple of decades worth of mob shady dealings and crooked cops, earlier crimes that may have led to the death of Sexton’s father, himself a cop, some 20 years ago.
Unfortunately for Kate (and readers) the mystery of the murdered newlyweds in Hollywood Crazy frequently takes a back seat to the antics of Kate’s friends. For, Kate surrounds herself with as wide a variety of kooks and weirdos as most readers will find in an entire library full of mystery novels. Kate’s roommates and hangers on include Natalie, a British blonde sexpot who fancies herself a private eye and whose every other word is a Cockney slang curse word. Kate also has to deal with an obese female pimp, a stereotypical transsexual, and an 80+ year old great grandmother who enjoys wearing skintight clothes. Every character in the book is sex obsessed, and every character except Kate constantly jokes about it.
The problem is that none of these jokes are funny. In fact, most of them are actively annoying, so much so that I gritted my teeth every time Kate’s entourage showed up, which was far too often. At one point in Hollywood Crazy, Kate is attacked by a prowler in her own home and barely escapes. On the next page, she is surrounded by her roommates who use the opportunity to tell more of the same moronic jokes they had already told 50 times in the book.
Hollywood Crazy is a very frustrating, schizophrenic book. On the one hand, it has everything mystery fans love: a tricky plot, kinky sex (the dead woman has a history as a high-end escort), financial intrigue, police corruption, an odious mob boss, and a historical mystery that has had a lasting psychological impact on the heroine. But every time the story builds some momentum, Kelly interrupts it with a lengthy interlude involving the least comical and most annoying comic sidekicks in sidekick history. I’m giving the book a three-star rating as the main storyline is slightly predominant and did keep me reading despite the non-comic comic detours. But call me crazy, I’m hoping that the killer in the next Hollywood book starts ridding Kate’s fictional universe of some of her hangers on.
Quirky to say the least. The cast of characters were unique and the story flowed page after page. Kate Sexton an LAPD detective must solve the wedding murders with the help of her new temporary partner. They went to high school together, so you know there is a back story there. She is divorced from her husband, a DA who left her in debt, she currently has 2 lovers, both dedicated to doing the right thing, which leaves her with a lot of free time for her police dog Bernie and her eclectic roommates. This was a surprisingly good read,
Another fantastic thriller from the author MZ Kelly. Enthralled from the beginning to the end as we follow detective Kate and her team track a killer. Kate has some very colorful room mates, Natalie and Mo who call themselves Sistah Snoop. Great laugh out loud moments, mixed with lots of suspense, tears, twists and turns you don't see coming. Kate is also investigating the shooting of her father, which happened when she was a little girl. Highly recommend.
I'm enjoying this series. I like the characters and the story line is not the same old predictable line. This is the second one I have read and I am looking forward to the third.
If you love Stephanie Plum, you'll love this series. Kate was investigating the same people her father was investigating when he was murdered. She needed to know who killed her dad.
Such a good book. I love how this series leaves me on the edge of my seat. Just when you think you’ve cracked the case, you realize that there’s more going on.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
A couple are killed at their wedding. Kate and Bernie are looking for the killer. She finds out that there is a connection to her fathers killing in the 1980s.
