I think the subtitle is misleading; 95% of this book is simply an autobiography of someone who had a terrifying, impoverished childhood. The process of growing up and recognizing the deficiencies in her coping mechanisms led her to find redemption in Christ. She excoriates evangelicals of the 1980s for their lack of compassion for gays, but at the same time says that since 80% of what kids learn from their parents is "caught" non-verbally, children of homosexual parents can often be very confused about human sexuality. Such complicated views are not very welcome in the present day and age. At any rate, it was very inspiring that she was able to forgive and love her mother in the end.
