Previous And Call Me in the Morning

Eli’s still not great at wearing his heart on his sleeve and Zane’s still got trust issues, but they manage just fine. It’s all good. Right?

Yes and no. When the doctors find themselves grounded between trips for Medicins Sans Frontieres, things begin to change. Zane’s making plans for where they’ll go next, but homesick Eli discovers the opportunity to open a clinic of his own in his old neighborhood. He’d have thought Zane would be all over that, but Zane’s not listening. Meanwhile, there’s trouble in paradise between protégés Taye and Richie, and Eli’s ex-wife Marybeth has come back to town, bringing a heaping helping of hassle with her. Eli figures it’s no wonder he’s been having a heck of a time with chest pain--which he hasn’t told anyone about.

There’s something to be said for setting the story straight, it’s true. Eli knows he and Zane have a good thing going even if keeping it that way is the hardest--and best--part.

Willa Okati (AKA Will, AKA Daniel) is made of many things: imagination, coffee, stray cat hairs, daydreams, more coffee, kitchen experimentation, a passion for winter weather, a little more coffee, a whole lot of flowering plants and a lifelong love of storytelling. Will's definitely one of the quiet ones you have to watch out for, though he -- not she anymore -- is a lot less quiet these days.

Sequel to "And call me in the morning"

“So there was nothing to be said for setting the record straight, as it were. Eli couldn’t say he minded being proved wrong, not when Zane was both reward and incentive to turn his life around. Change might never be easy, but it was well worth a man’s while.
But what then? After a guy fell in love—with his best friend, no less—what came next?”

First book was easily one of favourites but this one felt flat and I found myself bored and skimming... 3 stars heavily rounded up.

And Call Me In The Morning was my first encounter with the writing of Willa Okati and I was hooked, I fell head over heels in love with Eli & Zane. They were so perfect, not because they were 'perfect' but because they weren't. They had flaws, insecurities, human failings, quirky friends. I was so smitten that once I finished the book I went back to the beginning and read it again, but no that still wasn't enough I had to read it a third time before I could move on to other things. Why? you might wonder or at least to be honest I did because honestly I've never done that before. I still didn't really know why other than to say that I connected with this story, with these characters and at that time that was it. Eli and Zane were all wrapped up in that one beautiful story.

So now here we are several years later for me and for Eli and Zane and lord love Willa Okati because she has given us more of these two beautiful men. And now I think I finally understand why I love these characters, these stories so much. It's because to me this is a story about love, plain and simple. It's not an epic adventure, a terrifying thriller, a mind boggling mystery, none of those things. It's love at it's basic level. It's the day to day struggle to be who and what the person you love needs, knowing that their happiness means more to you than your own, it's compromise, sacrifice, give, take, want, need. All the things that make and break relationships. So yes parts of this book were a little boring but that was also part of the charm and the realism for me because life can be and is at times boring. Then there were the parts that made me hold my breath and cross my fingers that something wouldn't happen to make me have to stop reading because I knew I just needed to keep going and stay part of this story.

My recommendation, if you want something that will make you feel warm and smile and maybe even shed a tear or two. Read 'And Call Me In the Morning' then follow it up with 'And Call Me In the Evening'. If you want an epic adventure or any of that stuff do yourself and these books a favour keep looking because this isn't it.

This was at least the third try to get into the story. At least I got up to 30%, but honestly? It's boring, I don't care even the slightest about any of the mentioned people and I don't find their banter funny. Don't know what happened to the MCs, they are totally different than I remember, but that doesn't matter. I couldn't care less. Now I'm done with it.

3.5 stars. A nice sequel to what I consider a memorable book, but 'Evening' did not resonate with me like 'Morning'... or perhaps my reading expectations have changed over time.

After a guy fell in love—with his best friend, no less—what came next?

That’s exactly what I want to know! We got the small bit of Eli and Zane with their HFN at the end of “And Call Me in the Morning,” and now we have the chance to see how these best friends to best lovers are doing? You bet I jumped on that chance.

So Eli and Zane are together and have been for a few years so what’s been happening? They are now on again, off again residents of Chicago when they aren’t off saving the world as hunky yet humble doctors of Medicins Sans Frontieres, but this time back at home things are a bit different.

Zane has taken a teaching job at the University and Eli is left to meander around after an illness and trying to find something to do with him since the good folks at Immaculate Grace don’t want to take the risk of hiring the good doctor back only to have him leave again.

Holly and Diana are pretty much still the same but Taye and Richie or as I like to call them; Eli and Zane the second coming, are not in a good place. I was more than curious to find out what riff could cause these two young boys who are so head over heels for each other to hit a rough patch. I wanted them to kiss and make up after I learned there was trouble in young love paradise but I was made to wait. Boo.

I loved seeing Zane and Eli with each other this time around. They are more comfortable and settled in their relationship and just adorable as ever. The small steps even years later the Eli takes to show Zane and the world that they are together were so endearing. It’s not easy for the ex-cop now doctor to ever show his feelings, let alone that he is in a relationship with his best friend and a man, but the want in Eli to do so, I just loved it.

You can’t tell the heart who and what to love, or even when or how. Try it, and you end up withered and wrinkled and cold and sour.

The boys still have great chemistry together and their intimate moments were hot once again. The self-imposed UST with Eli drove me bonkers because I wanted it. Not only because it’s one of my favorite things with boys but I just wanted it for Eli because he wanted it so badly and the wait was well worth it.

There were communication issues with Eli and Zane, typical from the first book but I hoped they would have developed that within the relationship more over the years. It wasn’t my favorite thing but it’s believable, the non-communication, and the boys work through it well.

The big flip from the first book of who was in “danger” made me pause but after reflecting on it, again I could see it as being something that could happen. I liked the dreams Eli had about Zane and Marybeth and everyone in the room but I would have liked Zane there more. I mean, Eli was there when it was Zane and I really thought… but then I get it even when my heart wanted more.

I would have given this a higher rating but a couple things nagged me:

• The constant mention age and being old, got old. I know that Zane and Eli aren’t young men in their 20’s but they aren’t in their 70’s either. They are still at a good age and the repetition of how old they were, of not looking their age etc. started to wear me down.
• The conflict with Taye and Richie was so mysterious that I thought it would be a more involved side story but the reveal was just tossed out there like it was nothing. A lot of foreplay with their story and no release. *sigh*

But… I did had a few favorite parts but one that stands out the most for me was Eli’s declaration to Zane about labels;

“I’m just Eli. And I’m with you. Does anything else matter?”

As many times in GFY story-lines boys are forced into being gay, bisexual etc. and this time, Eli was just a man who was in love with his best friend. I really liked that. It was simple, matter of fact and well done.

And Call Me in the Evening was a nice follow up to see where the boy and the gang are. I was happy with the end and wish Eli and Zane nothing but versatile happiness.

Boo, I was kinda dissapointd by this follow up. I LOVED the first book, but this missed the mark for me with how things were handled with the entire hospital scene and after that. Still, love me some Eli and Zane and they were still sexy together!

Whoa, BORING! I made it to 17%. The sex scene didn't even save it. Do you know why? Because they did too much cheezy talking before they got to it. Pages and Pages, or location and location (on my kindle) of it. I remember liking "And Call Me in the Morning" because it was to older and established men finding love. Maybe since it has been so long since I read that on that I couldn't get into this one. I don't have anything against older characters. I wished there were more books with older characters but that doesn't mean they have to be boring. I don't know where the book was going, it didn't seem to have a point. Maybe if I read further I would get to the set up of the plot but I just couldn't take it.

I won't give this any stars since I am dnfing it.

The things I did not like about the first one - basically Eli - were amplified more here. Eli is still having a hard time being out with Zane, even holding hands or touching. Every time he pulled away from Zane I wanted to hit him. He created unnecessary drama that basically made up the whole plot line of this book. I was disappointed, but I will say that it was worth it just to get a peak into their lives.

Didn't think it could get any worse than the first book. Boy, was I wrong.

Skimmed like 95% if the book. I had no idea what was going on. Their conversations with each other and with their friends were boring as hell. No real plot. Did not enjoy it at all.

Oh man. I was so looking forward to this book. I just loved “And Call Me in the Morning”– book one in this two book series by Willa Okati. It was one of the first m/m books I had ever read, and it touched me. It is a “gay for you” “friends to lovers” book between two men who find love and their sexuality late in life and it is incredibly sweet and yet very sexy. Willa has away with words that just gently tugs at your heart-strings and leaves you with a sappy smile, while still getting you a bit hot.

In this book she continues approximately where the first book leaves off and you definitely could not appreciate this book without having read the first. We find our newly minted lovers living their new lives together and we see what in their lives has been working well, and what has been struggling. I can definitely appreciate this look behind the HEA, kind of like seeing what happens to Cinderella after the wedding.

We also get to revisit old cast members like Taye and Richie and Diana and Holly and it’s very nice seeing them again and catching up on their stories. But, as it should be most of the book is about Eli and Zane.

I just love Zane’s character, he’s so sexy and sweet, but we see even less of him in this book than we did the first. I would have loved to “hear” more from his POV, especially since the first was mostly from Eli’s POV, it could have been an interesting twist.

Both of these books are really about Eli and his personal journey. Eli is a man’s man and struggles with being “gay” even though he has no problem admitting he’s in love with another man. That’s the main struggle in this sequel. Eli admits his love for Zane in book one and then deals with that fact in book two.

While this is probably fair and even a bit realistic, it can get a little dogged, and at times, trying.

Here is where I got a little disappointed. Well, a couple of places.

First, I didn’t realize just how much Eli had to still work through. I had thought we managed to get through most of that in book one. I have to say, though I love the characters and really enjoy Willa’s cool, smooth writing style, this got a little tedious. I was like… are you kidding me? I thought we had already worked this out! I seriously felt for Zane, he seemed to have a lot of patience for putting up with Eli’s hang ups and lies by omission, and at times caved in where I wouldn’t have.

Second, I love a good book about older characters, but in this book, my hot-for-each-other doctors were seriously showing their age. I appreciated the leaning towards realism, but it wasn’t what I necessarily wanted to read. I liked picturing them gettin’ busy and hot for each other, not getting sick with… well I’ll leave that to you to find out. But it sucked! It all works out in the end, have no fear, but – WOW – reality check!

I really did like seeing Taye and Richie and seeing them “grow up”. Holly and Diana were the same, which was nice. Mary Beth, the ex-wife, kinda confused me… a lot. But I guess she added her part to the story as well.

Overall, as sequels go, it did what it promised: it helped set the story straight and showed us more of these two beloved characters, and I did really love seeing more of them. I definitely felt that their HEA was a rock solid HEA by the end of this book. That’s always nice. But, I can’t say I loved the book. If “And Call Me in the Morning” earned a happy 5 hearts, then “And Call Me in the Evening” earned a less happy three and a half hearts, mostly for good writing, solid editing, and a lot of sentimentality.

I recommend it to those who loved the first book, I think you’ll enjoy catching up on these old friends.

"Don't go where I can't follow" ... Beautiful!

So I'm browsing my GR recommendations page looking for something to read and I see this and I'm soo excited to read more of Eli and Zane that I immediately bought it and started rereading And Call Me in the Morning. I ended up giving it 3 stars not because I didn't like it much but because the first one was so much better, I had higher expectations.

My thoughts:

1- I absolutely adore Eli and Zane's relationship. IT's real, life-like, grounded, it's the kind that lasts forever. Their relationship is so easy and mature; it's not perfect but it's perfect for them. They're flawed characters who make mistakes, but it's okay because they have each other no matter what.

2. I love love their friends; Holly, Taye, Richie and most especially Diana.

3. I didn't like that Zane was absent during the hospital scene, especially when Eli wouldn't stop calling out for him. It was heartbreaking. Yes, at the end you're supposed to understand why. The key word here is 'supposed to' because I honestly didn't. It was a sweet gesture but it wasn't enough compensation for not being there. He was supposed to be there; a worried, teary mess, pacing, yelling orders and basically just falling apart. Anyways, that's just my opinion.

4. I also didn't get the part with Richie. It made Taye happy so I guess that's good, but still, I don't get it??

All in all, I liked the book well enough, just not as much as I did the first one. However, any opportunity to see more of Eli and Zane is more than welcome .

Honeymoon stage: over.

This story opens several years after Eli and Zane became lovers and then partners. They had made decisions years ago that affected their medical practices and it affects them differently. This also opens to Eli not feeling his best but is true to his being a doctor: he ignores all signs and symptoms and becomes an epic failure at the other end of the stethoscope.

Eli is basically homesick and sick but Zane is still hyper excited about his work with the Medicins Sans Frontieres and is at that stage where he assumes to know what Eli is thinking and feeling and not being that observant about what was in front of him.

So yes, the honeymoon is over but their love is just as steady, just as strong. They face tests they never thought they would have to and it does make up for some bit of drama. The other drama involves good friends really so, as a reader, I felt I was being played along a bit, given a treat involving two men I fell in love with years ago and really made me addicted to the MM genre.

For those of you who have never read And Call Me In The Morning, it is best to pick it up. It may have been written a while ago but it is a timeless story not easy to forget. It can also make you see why readers love these two men so much.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

Let me start by saying you really do need to read book 1 - And Call Me in the Morning before you read this.

In book 1 we met Zane and Eli and I totally fell in love with them. They are both older men, best friends and it was a kind of gay for you theme after they both kissed. Authors don’t write about older gay men nearly often enough in my opinion.

In this book we are 4 years down the line and Eli and Zane have just returned home from yet another trip into the wilderness using their medical skills. Zane is already excited and making plans for their next trip whilst Eli is not being entirely honest about the fact that he wants to stay home and do something different. Eli is also feeling unwell and it is a little more serious than he thinks, something he and a myriad of doctors he is friends with seem to overlook.

There was no excitement for me in this book and it sadly fell a little flat. I was looking forward to see how the two men had grown and progressed with their relationship but they hadn’t, they did take a few steps toward the end but it felt a little forced after Eli’s health scare.

It WAS nice to catch up with both men again and I would certainly like to read more about them in the future but I came away from this book not really knowing anymore about them than when I went in.

3.5 stars, wanted desperately to round up to 4 but had issues. I loved Eli and Zane from book one and was giddy to get more of them here. Their relationship is just as intense as book one and their friends just as fun.

My first issue I could overlook if it was the only one. Eli and Zane have a friend, Taye and his partner and there is a mystery of what is going on with them. And it's resolved so half-assed I nearly couldn't believe it. But I would have over looked it if it was my only issue.

My big issue was how the author used a health crisis to force the emotional reconciliation between Eli and Zane. This felt like a total cop out! Eli and Zane are mature men who've negotiated a relationship and clearly have more negotiations to do. I felt cheated out of this development when this plot thing happens and suddenly after one quick conversation the men re-negotiate their relationship. NO! I wanted to see it as I did when they fell in love.

Of course, if you're a fan of book one you'll read this and like it as I did but I gotta confess I was a tad disappointed.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

I read And Call Me in the Evening immediately after And Call Me in the Morning and found that the flow was easy to follow but recognized that almost five years have elapsed for Zane, Eli, and their friends. With Zane and Eli now nearing their 50s, Eli is showing signs of slowing down. He is not as young as he used to be, while Zane seems as full of energy as always. Other than Taye and Richie having relationship issues, everyone else appears to have been put in cryogenic freeze and “woken up” exactly as they had been.

I highly enjoyed the first book in the series. I loved the double gay-for-you, friends-to-lovers, and older characters aspect of it. I also loved Zane and Eli. So I was looking forward to reading more and seeing how they had grown, but much to my disappointment there wasn't a lot of growth. It picks up a few years after the first book, and they were still having the same problems as before. Eli is still having difficulty admitting their relationship and being more affection towards Zane. And do not even get me started on Zane. I also didn't like Taye and Richie's subplot. I just didn't add up. But despite all of its imperfections, I still enjoyed catching up with Zane and Eli.

All of their insecurities come to a head in this book. After exploring the world and their relationship in a stint with Drs. Without Borders, Zane and Eli are back home because of some leftover medical conditions they've contracted while abroad. The insecurities in traveling start popping up and Eli would much rather be home than off saving the world. At their age, they really should've had some more communication than what they had. Just be honest and things won't get so complicated. The theater scene just about killed me. Loved the secondary characters & so glad for this HEA!

This suffered from the exact same issues I had with And Call Me in the Morning And Call Me in the Morning 1 in that parts of it just totally passed over my head. So while yes, it was nice to catch up on the characters, I still had moments of "huh?" that I don't appreciate in a romance book.

That was a very nice read. I was happy to catch up with Eli and Zane. It was good to see them happy together but no where close to perfect. There were the typical issues with communication (a common relationship problem), but that just made the relationship seem all the more real because of it. I would have liked to have Zane's POV, but I still enjoyed this quite a bit.

I read book 1 about Eli and Zane back in 2016 and remembered how much I enjoyed it. Wonderful to revisit them now that they are together. Such a realistic portrayal of a relationship between two men, living their lives with flaws and illness and the vicissitudes of life. W. Okati has such a unique style in her writing.
