The third audiobook in an hilarious series centred on the Olympian gods, comedically and lovingly narrated by the author herself.
Elliot's life is spiralling out of control. He's been suspended from school, his ex-convict dad is useless around the house and his mum's health is worsening. What's more, the gods are determined to forge on with the quest for the third chaos stone. An unlikely, hilarious and heartwarming odyssey begins. But Elliot has heard of a mythical potion rumoured to cure all ills - can he save his mum, even if it means sacrificing the fate of the world?
I'm such a fan of this series, and this is a heart-wrenching, extremely exciting third instalment in the series. (8+)

Beyond The Odyssey by Maz Evans Book three of the Who let The God's Out series❤️
Back to see what Elliot's doing now ...😇 A house full of Greek gods and a mortal constellation, a mom who's in a world of her own, his life couldn't be more adventurous... right? Wrong! The threat of Thanatos still looms, the chaos stones are still being hunted and to top it all, he's on a mission to get some panacea's potion which is a cure for all ailments, for his mom. Hence, begins his journey to the island of Cyclops, and back. All this is done in the usual hilarious style for which I've come to love her books. And as always, not only does the author, Maz Evans, entertain, but also highlights issues surrounding tweens of today in a deft manner. She explores the grief of a child, the fears, thoughts and actions of someone dealing with the biggest event in their lives – trying to exist in a world when things have been turned upside down. But, nowhere do they make the reading experience sad or overwhelming. The smiles and giggles are what I know will be aplenty everytime I pick the series up🙃 I can't wait to find out where the final book lands Elliot on this madcap journey which is shaping him as a responsible, smart and capable young man!
I normally get bored with series after a while, whether it's tv series or books. But this series goes from brilliant to something off the scale brilliant. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. Maz Evans has the ability to make you cry with laughter and then just cry. Can't wait for number four!
This book is a comedic story with sad tones. This is a good book for light reading, but it also deals with the issue of being a young carer for somebody with a mental illness. I enjoy this book every time I read it and I would recommend it to anyone from 8-13 years old who likes comedy.
Gods it’s brilliant. More emotions than I can list. The exceptional humour of the past two, more twists and turns than you can count, a massive dollop of sadness, some more exceptional Greek mythology. New characters, old favourites, new places, old haunts. I just... yes. Maz is exceptional.
Fans of the Who Let The Gods Out series by queen of comedy storytelling Maz Evans will be delighted to see the third instalment, Beyond the Odyssey. True to form, this book is a hoot from start of finish, taking you on a roller-coaster ride that is packed with action, humour and some highly poignant moments too.
We pick up the story with young Elliot’s life going from bad to worse. With his mum’s condition rapidly deteriorating, his house full of larger-than-life immortals who are almost impossible to keep hidden, his dad (whom Elliot is unsure whether to trust) now out of prison and the nagging feeling of unfinished business in his quest to find the four Chaos Stones, poor Elliot has a lot on his mind. Not to mention the collective meddling of irritating school teachers, ultimate nosy neighbour Patricia Porshley-Plum and visiting social workers attempting to assess Elliot’s home life.
Despite all of this, Elliot is a steely and determined hero and alongside his ongoing quest to save the world he becomes highly motivated to do whatever it takes to find a magical potion that, if rumours prove to be true, will be able to cure his mum of her dementia. Along with the hilarious cast of greek gods, Elliot embarks upon a quest of ‘epic’ proportions that leads him to meet some of the incredible monsters and heroes from Homer’s Odyssey, although each one has been given a thoroughly modern and hilarious twist. Entrepreneurial Odysseus, for example, has become the CEO of corner-cutting airline Don’tcAIR, whose motto is ‘no frills, more thrills’ and witch-goddess Circe is a highly-charged working mum trying juggle the demands of business and family life. Then there is the highly paranoid cyclops Polyphemus, who surrounds himself with every security gadget going. There is so much laugh-out-loud humour in the characterisation in Beyond The Odyssey and whether you know your Greek mythology or not, the hilarious cast will leave you in stitches at the witty puns, visual comedy and many in-jokes.
As well as Maz Evans' fantastically fun brand of observational humour, the story is highly emotional in parts too, with tears of laughter giving way to tears of sadness at times. Elliot’s mum is seriously ill and one thing that is not funny is the harsh reality of her early onset dementia and Elliot’s experiences of having to become a young carer. Many readers will relate to Elliot’s sense that life is tough, even if not all readers relate to his exact situation. One aspect of this series that I particularly love is how the comical cast of mythological characters represent the incredible role that stories can play in providing much-needed comic relief and escapism for readers young and old.
The storytelling in Beyond The Odyssey is so clever and witty and I thoroughly recommend this superb action-packed adventure as a ‘totally optimal’ choice to read aloud in upper KS2. All that is left now is to wait for the fourth and final instalment and I for one am really looking forward to finding out what happens to Elliot next.
Many thanks to the publisher for kindly sending me a review copy of this book.
I`m a huge fan of this series, which centres around the life of young carer Elliot Hooper as he meets the Greek gods, who have abandoned Olympus and now live on Earth with him and his mum, who has dementia. They`re searching for the Chaos Stones, to prevent Thanatos from ruling the world, and in this installment they`re also trying to track down a potentially mythical potion that could cure Elliot`s mum. This upped the game yet again from the excellent last book, maintaining the hilarious humour the series is known for, yet felt a little darker in tone and the stakes were incredibly high for Elliot. He has to face so much in this book, and every emotion he felt, I felt alongside him as I was so rooted in the world. We also get to see other characters we`ve met in the first two books, such as ultra-organised constellation Virgo and the gods/goddesses we`ve come to know and love, while also getting to meet some new ones who provided lots and lots of laughs. If you read my interview with Maz last year, you`ll know that I think her villains are truly awful, and much to my surprise they got even more evil this time. Some of their actions were utterly despicable, and the twists were so shocking I was left doing double takes at the book more than once. After the thrilling events of the climax and conclusion, I`m simultaneously desperate to get my hands on book four next year, and dreading how it`ll play with my emotions. 5/5
The saga continues... great use of Greek mythology in the modern world, appealing hero.
4.5 stars.
I've enjoyed the first two books previously, and saw this available as an audiobook, read by the author.
This won't make much sense to readers/listeners who haven't read the read of the series. For those that have, the adventure picks up where we left Elliott and his Immortal friends. Mid-quest. His mum is still slowly deteriorating, his home still in danger of being taken away from him, his Godly friends still 'helping'.
Searching for chaos stones, we continue to get to know the Greek myths, with more characters brought into scenes, as Elliott desperately tries to save his mum and the world too.
Maz Evans reads her own work brilliantly, with great voices for a range of personalities. The story makes good sense in audio format, it's easy to keep up and the humour of a reader voicing the Gods is spot on.
There's a dark ending here, with continuation expected, hinting at what's to come. I'll be looking for the next book when it's published...
With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.
Throughout this one I was feeling like it might be dipping a little in quality compared to the start of the series, but overall I think it’s ended up measuring up. There was a ‘twist’ in there that I’d figured out on pretty much the first page but little one didn’t see coming, and that just made it so endearing, so I think it did its job. Sprog thoroughly enjoyed it again and we shared lots of laughs and fun times. It did get very emotional and genuinely quite perilous towards the end and we’ve finished feeling quite anxious for Elliot and thinking that everything is not going to end up ok. I was actually quite worried in places that it might be a bit too heavy for her considering her family circumstances (she’s fostered), but ultimately I think it’s allowing her to explore those big emotions in a safe way so it’s got to be a positive. Just a note that if you’ve got a little one for whom these things are a bit more raw/recent it might spark some things for them and need a fair amount of extra support.
This one was a huge downgrade from the previous 2 novels. It was fun to witness Maz Evans' version of a few of my favorite mythological characters and the novel ends on an interesting, albeit extremely obvious, cliffhanger; compelling me to start the next one right away. However, the problem was the relatively slower pace (it's a short book but it seemed like a slog) and the fact that Elliot was absolutely insufferable in this novel. While I understand that it's a story about a 13 year old kid and probably caters to children of the same age group, who can understand the angst, he was extremely irritating in this one.
Boom! Elliot, Josie-Mum, Patricia Horses-Bum, the Gods and assorted Immortals are back! With the authorities sniffing around his home, Elliot is desperate to find a cure for his ailing mum so sets off on a perilous journey to the Afterlife...
Keeping up the breath-taking pace of the previous two books, there are twists and turns galore as Elliot does battle with a variety of challenges, both physical and mental. A fabulous third instalment, it is set up perfectly for the final book in the series next year. I can't wait.
Yep, it's super-optimal all right! I think this is actually the best of the three so far; it's so much more than a simple quest story. I'm a huge fan of The Odyssey anyway so I had a good cackle at the jokes there (I will never stop being amused by Mypu). What a great way to introduce kids to such a classic.
Elliot's arc is deftly done and my goodness, aren't those villains something else. Literally. My daughters (12 and 7) both loved this installment, and I've just let a copy loose in the school library too - I can't wait to see what the kids make of it!
This has been my favourite in the series yet. The characters have continued to develop well and the story has continued to get more interesting. Elliott is on the hunt for the third chaos stone and a way to help his mother whose dementia is becoming more pronounced. There are some really funny parts to this book, in line with the rest of the series, but there are also some darker parts which are handled well. With Elliott desperate to do anything to save his mum, the future of the world is in peril. The ending is a huge cliffhanger, so looking forward to seeing how this one ends.
BOOM! And we’re back with Elliot, Josie-Mum and the Gods for the third instalment of this gripping series. I need time to process everything that happened before I write my full review, but it’s super-optimal! Laughter, tears, and more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie box set, all combine to produce an epic adventure that just gets better and better with every book. Now the long wait for the final instalment next year...
The third instalment of the WLTGO series is a tense, exciting and heart -wrenching story. Brilliant writing again from Max Evans, I cannot wait to read the final book in the awesome series.
Next in the saga - I admit to crying a little at this one, but it certainly sets the characters up well for the final instalment. A rollercoaster ride and all the characters take different paths... a twist in the tale, which I suspect adults will see and a good one for children to see if they spot it.
This book was amazing. Back for another crazy adventure. This book was quite emotional at the end. These books are great too pass time o train our flight. Absolutely hilarious this series is awesome!!!
Another great and very funny book in this series. This is book 3 and my only complaint is that it ends on a cliffhanger! I am hoping book 4 is coming very soon! This is a very funny fantasy adventure series about a normal boy who gets mixed up with Greek gods and mythical beings.
Probably best read in sequence, I read this for work, which reflects the rating. It’s an exciting adventure with a real emotional impact, interesting characters and lots of discussion points. Would definitely recommend this book but read it in order.
Book #3 of Who Let the Gods Out series. Elliot needs to save his mother and cure her illness. Will he be able to enter the underworld, survive, and get the cure for his mother? Great adventures for those who love mythology and human interaction.
Halfway through the brilliant WLTGO series now, and it just keeps getting better. Tried an audiobook this time, narrated by Maz Evans herself, and it was wonderful!
As hilarious as it is emotional; as intelligent as it compelling - not many books have it all, but these do!
This is getting serious now. Like PJO sea of monsters if it was more depressing. It was slow ish to start but Josie’s narrative ?! Omg did not see that coming. And then the plot twist at the end ?? Absolute heartbreak. Justice for the Cooper family.
