My Rating: 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ FINALLY!!!! A five star winner!!!! Laughs, feels and thrills!!!

This is the 16th book in the DCI Jack Logan Thrillers - and while some people may throw caution to the wind and decide YOLO I am jumping in (Pink I am looking at you….) I would suggest starting at the start. Not only because these books are great but also there is a theme, a story, a character development that you miss if you don’t - BUT suggestion only so don’t say you weren’t warned if this one doesn’t make sense when you dive right in!!! 🤣

DCI Jack Logan and his team head to the far north of Scotland to investigate a grisly murder of a seemingly harmless, elderly lady who apparently has no enemies… however she’s dead so this simply cannot be true.

The close knit community is closing ranks to protect their own… can the team (along with a new interesting member) break through to crack the case before more elderly ladies are knocked off??

OK FINALLY a 5 Star book I can get behind!!! I say this every time I read one of these books BUT I always expect after 16 books that these will start to become not so good… God am I always proven wrong and thank goodness for that. I just love this series and I simply never want it to end.

J.D. Kirk has me laughing out loud at some of the most ridiculous scenes that play out in these books and I love it. Simultaneously some of the goriest things happen as well… so you laugh… you cringe… sometimes you cry (I didn’t cry in this one… stop asking 🤣).

The book starts off with a familiar character who has made an appearance before…and you are left wondering… what will happen there. Then we have a new addition to the team (Sinead is about to pop - for those that have read these will know what thats about)… and well the newest member is INTERESTING to say the least. I honest didn’t know if I liked her at first… but she grew on me and the way JD writes her is wonderful. And we get another appearance of someone that everyone loves to hate… thats right good old Bob Hoon is back in all his glory!!

These books never fail to entertain… that is what they are here for pure unadulterated entertainment… if you have a wild sense of humour you will love this… there are a lot of Scottish terms, references to food, cups of tea and many a biscuit and the jokes!!! BUT be warned and I warn you all in every review… IF YOU HATE SWEARING DO NOT READ THESE BOOKS …. They feature some pretty foul language… it doesn’t bother me because it add to the colour of the characters… I know some people find it unnecessary but… in this case I think it actually adds to it… thats just for me though… so if you are easily offended by swearing then I would suggest skipping these… and especially the spin off Bob Hoon novels because he is a foul mouthed mongrel at best 🤣

I probably should mention something about the story… In my review hahaha. It was entertaining and interesting. I did not guess the ending at all… and you would think you could see it coming a mile away but nope.. this was out of left field but also kind of believable if not a bit sad. There were some really good emotional bits and some great character development. Dave Davidson was back he is one of my faves. Shona of course is there and her and Jack have a lovely relationship but it didn’t feature as heavily in this one. Palmer is there p*ssing Jack off with is very presence which I find amusing… and of course I said Hoon is back… I loved his bit. I think it was very fitting and very Hoon!!!

Overall - I recommend this to you if you love a good solid police procedural, don’t mind or can put up with a fair bit of swearing (I promise no C bombs), you like reading about different places - the Scottish scenery and landscape features heavily in these books and I love it and you just want to have a laugh… If none of that appeals to you then definitely don’t read it.

This is also quite a long book but I (as always) smashed through it in 24 hours and am now left wondering when the next one will be released… and what I am going to do with my life.

As an aside, JD Kirk has a really good newsletter and website - all the places he writes about are on a map that you can go and have a look at and he also does a blog and the most recent one is quite good where he writes about him having Aphantasia which I found incredibly interesting - just google J.D. Kirk.

Again I find myself repeating the praise I always give these books but we’ll see where it goes..
This is another very fast paced, gritty and realistic story that mixes suspense with moments of humour, which come mostly from the dialogue and the strong personalities of the team. Speaking of I really liked the new addition, they gave me a lot of laughs.

The characters are still telling their own stories which doesn’t become a filler but makes you feel a bond of sorts with them. The personal struggles and growth of the team are just as important as solving the crime and Kirk doesn’t shy away from it or make it an overbearing thing. Despite the serious subject matter, the humour is well timed and never feels forced and of course is just hilarious.

”If you want to keep someone distracted, then boring them into a coma with the ins and outs of Police Scotland’s internal processes was certainly one way to go about it.”

Overall it’s another successful crime/thriller which is well paced, atmospheric, has that familiar Scottish humour I love, great characters and a beautiful setting. I felt this book dealt with a lot of personal issues but didn’t let that become an overbearing factor which I liked. Great ending too..

10 out of 10 for Book 16.

It’s definitely at a point in the series where you need to have read at least the past five or six (but who would want to miss any of the previous instalments) to thoroughly enjoy, and also getting to where changes in the team are inevitable.

As expected the team is still brilliant and I loved Sinead’s maternity replacement. A lot happens with the character development in this novel which is excellent. Hoon, in his consultant role adds spice to the story (and flowery language used). The one-liners - just masterful!

I now need to hold myself back as I only have one left to read and then I have no idea what I’m going to do with the withdrawals…

It was weird waiting months for this volume to drop. Last year I read about a book a week after reading my first DCI Logan novel. And this marks the 21st under the Kirk name and coming up on a dozen under the names Barry Hutchison and Barry J, Hutchison. So this is the 33rd volume from this author in under a year that I have read. I have now read the first 16 in the DCI Logan series and all 4 in the Robert Hoon series, as well as stand alone VIP exclusive short story. I picked the first for a few reasons, but mainly because authors Alex Smith and JE Mayhew have both recommended the author and series. I am a big fan of Smith’s DCI Kett novels and Mayhew’s DCI Will Blake Series. I have been hooked since that first read. I had no idea how addictive Kirk’s books would be or that like Mayhew and Smith, Kirk publishes under three different names. Kirk publishes children books as Barry Hutchison, and other adult fiction as Barry J. Hutchison. He is coming up on 200 books across the three pen names. If I had known that or I might not have picked up this first one. Friends call me a ‘completionist’ in that when I find an author I like, I try to read everything they have published. Being caught up now on his works as J.D. Kirk I will have to wait for each new one to come out. But back to this volume.

The description of this novel is:

“Age is just a number... Until yours is up.

When a blood-soaked old man is spotted wandering through a sleepy fishing village in the far north of Scotland, his neighbours think he’s been in an accident.

Until he leads them to his home, and to the carefully arranged remains of his late wife.

It is the first murder that the remote Highland village has ever seen.

It will not be the last.

Someone is targeting the elderly and vulnerable in their homes. Someone they know. Someone they trust.

Arriving to lead the manhunt, DCI Jack Logan finds a close-knit community closing ranks. Can Jack break down the wall of silence before more lives are lost? Or, in this twisted, sadistic killer, has Jack Logan finally met his match?”

Like many of the other stories in this series these murders are gruesome and particularly shocking based on the ages of the victims. Soon Logan and the team are working out of a small detachment, in a pretty closed off community. Sinead is, back at the unit, doing research and coordinating things. She is about to head off on leave to have her twins. She is feeling left out and useless. She is also trying to make a difference in a case one last time. Shona is pondering the loss of the opportunity of children. Tammi-jo is assigned to fill in on the team, and she just does not stop talking. As time is ticking away can Logan and the team fill in all the pieces and solve the case?

This is another great read in an excellent series. I love the two series written under the pen name J.D. Kirk are definitely Scottish Mysteries, and I can see the comparisons with Smith’s and Mayhew’s works, as well as several other more mainstream names. Kirk has also announced a new series, DCI Heather Filson, which is out soon. Each time I finish a book by Kirk it takes willpower not to just pick up the next one and keep going, no matter what name they were published under. I have now read all the books published buy this author under this name, and I am looking forward to that new series that has been teased. As mentioned it is now time to branch out further into his other works, having read s stand alone and 10 from series. I love that the stories are set in Scotland! This book and series would be great reads for fans of Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan, or Temperance Brennan. I state it again this is a great read in an excellent series!

Simply brilliant.

At last, my pre-order of 'One for the Ages' was delivered. I started reading and, as per usual, didn't stop until the book was finished. This one is up there in my top 5 favourites so far in this series. The humour had me in stitches in many places. I enjoyed meeting a new character who I think has great potential and the return of a previous character who, I hope, has a bigger role in future books. As for Bob Hoon, well, who would have thought what his input would be! Absolutely wonderful use of him. My only complaint is that these books are impossible to put down once started. The story always grabs you from the first page and doesn't let go until the end. I think this is the sign of an exceptional writer. Hope the wait for book 17 isn't too long in coming. Bravo JD, job well done.

The long-awaited Logan 16 landed in my Kindle at midnight and I did my best to read it in one go. Unfortunately, sleep overtook me and I had to finish it this morning. It's an excellent story as always, just the right balance of thrills and comedy. There's also a bit of drama - no change there, then - to add to the mix. Logan's team is sent North to Wick to investigate the bloody death of an elderly lady, much loved by everyone in the community. Or was she?? Right under their noses, a second death occurs but are they linked? Suspects are eliminated until the newest member of the team breaks the case. It's a shocker!! Meanwhile, back in Inversnecky things are all about to change for some in the team. Oh, and Hoon pops up - always a delight. If the ubiquitous "alright" could be swapped for "all right," this book would be perfect. 😉

Wonderful!

This was excitung, scary, very involved, and no solid suspects for the murders! All suspects were cleared leaving the team with nothing. Sinead is working the office because her babies are almost due. She makes a final attempt to track a suspect on her own but very unexpected things happen. The reader will never predict the ending or the birth of your the twins! Very satisfying entry, involving this excellent police team!

Don't read at the hairdressers if you want to keep your dignity

I made the mistake of booking a hairdressers appointment on the same day I was reading Book 16. Like an impetuous fool I thought I'd take my kindle with me and enjoy the story while I waited for my colour to set. Having laughed, cried, whimpered and dribbled in the salon for 30 minutes whilst sporting a full head of highlighter foils I now have to find a new hairdresser. Mr J D Kirk you are more of a clarty fiend than Bob Hoon.

The brutal murder of an elderly woman in her own home sends Logan and his team to a remote Highland village. Was is the husband, found wandering around drenched with blood? The carer, a frequent visitor to the home trusted by all? An estranged family member hoping for an inheritance? The team has their work cut out for them, especially with Sinead having to stay behind and an overly chatty temporary replacement to integrate into their efforts.

An entertaining read, as always. Could have done without the invitable dramatic childbirth scene, which was a little too cliché, but otherwise greatly enjoyed this.

One For the Ages is book 16 in the DCI Logan Crime Thrillers by J. D. Kirk. Jack Logan was in Glasgow when he and his team caught the case of the murder of an older woman in the far north of Scotland. However, DCI Logan and his team can not determine why someone is hitting on older adults in this small rural community, and they have to race to find the killer before another elderly adult dies. One For The Ages readers will continue to follow DCI Logan to discover what happens.

One For the Ages is a fantastic addition to this excellent series by J. D. Kirk. I enjoy reading books in this series, and One For The Ages did not disappoint. I had trouble putting this book down. I love J. D. Kirk's portrayal of his characters and how they interact throughout this book. One For The Ages is well-written and researched by J. D. Kirk. I like J. D. Kirk's description of the settings of One For The Ages, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.

The readers of One For The Ages will learn about the role of a carer of older adults. One For The Ages readers will learn about living in a small community in the far north of Scotland.

I recommend this book.

another fantastic read

When I download a Jack Logan I try not to start it, if I do I know I’ll devour it within the day. They are THE best books ever. So many laugh out loud moments. With every member of the team adding their own flavour to the Logan soup. Come on JD you just can’t write these quick enough!!! With 16 books in the series they just get better and better. Roll on number 17!

SUPERB I LOVED IT!

Awe Barry you have excelled yourself with your latest "One For the Ages" It was an absolute master piece which I tried to make last by "trying" to read more slowly because I just did not want it to end. The humour this time was simply hilarious with loads of one liners just pure genius. It was a terrific story and it was a pleasure to be introduced to your new talkative DC who made such a massive impact on the story, a sure hit who will be taking Sinead's place while on maternity leave. Always lovely to have Dave and Bob Hoon back to add to the fun and what an unlikely birthing partner, poor old Tyler. I will never tire reading your books and I'm already counting down the days for book 17. With huge thanks BP Sheffield x

Oh, how I've missed you, JD Kirk!

The murder, the suspense is as intriguing as many of my "favs" - Penny, Stabenow, many others. But your characters, and the team interactions are the best. Laughter is the perfect magnet that draws me back to your books!
Now I guess I Must hunt for another Bob Hoon story.

I woke up wanting the read more and write a review.
If I had more stars I’d use them!
Read more because there are a few threads left dangling…
Laugh out loud moments.
Fully developed characters that make you believe them.
And believe in them. And care about them.
The who-done-it kept me guessing.
I’d read it again just for more.
