Gaia: Shadow and Breath

Rate this book
The Seasons meet on the coast to discuss the reason for the unseasonal changes taking place. A hardened, established killer gets a job he doesn't want to do, finding much more than he bargained for in a fighting dog's shed. A husband loses his wife, but finds her again in a patch of woodland, nestled in the wet, inviting earth. And a tea party with an odd set of guests. GAIA: SHADOW AND BREATH is a collection of fantasy, dark fantasy, magical realism inspired by the goddess Gaia, mother earth. A portion of the proceeds from this anthology will be donated to the Nature Conservancy.

Not much here for me. To be fare, I am not a fan of fantasy writing. I was drawn to this anthology for the Kelby Losack story, which was ok, but bounds away from his later work. Other than that the first story was alright, and the last two were ok. I was not too into these stories, but a fan of fantasy or magical realism might find some interesting stories here.

Very nearly four stars - this is an interesting anthology, inasmuch the authors don't come across as tired and going through the motions. They may lack skills sometimes, they may fumble the ball, but they carry on and through on enthusiasm and (sometimes) that old standby, the intestinal fortitude. A fun selection, really.
