Sandy Douglas watches birds—the feathered kind mostly—especially birds of prey. When someone begins murdering women, killing them by night, ruthlessly, silently and totally without warning, it is Sandy who first gives the killer a name—The Hoolet—after an owl he has been writing about in his nature coloum for a London newspaper.
Called in by his editor to cover the investegation, Sandy becomes a creature of the dark, a lurker in shadows, an anticipator of evil to come. While each successive killing baffles the police even more and increases the fear that holds the small Scottish town in its grip, Sandy seems to be one step ahead. But how far can his word be trusted? How true are the newspaper reports he files every day? And why have the police started watching Sandy?
