Paul Strathern (born 1940) is a English writer and academic. He was born in London, and studied at Trinity College, Dublin, after which he served in the Merchant Navy over a period of two years. He then lived on a Greek island. In 1966 he travelled overland to India and the Himalayas. His novel A Season in Abyssinia won a Somerset Maugham Award in 1972.
Besides five novels, he has also written numerous books on science, philosophy, history, literature, medicine and economics.
Russell asserted that throughout his life he was driven by three great passions: 1. the longing for love, 2. the quest for knowledge, and 3. heart rending pity for the suffering of humanity. I feel the same way except that I might change the word "humanity" to "all living things."
Russell and Wittgenstein had a fascinating discussion about whether or not there was a hippopotamus in the room. Russell insisted there could not be one on scientific grounds, but Wittgenstein refused to agree because it was logically possible.
One of the things I admire Russell for politically is that, unlike George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells who were duped by Russian communism, he was always aware of its failings. This made him unpopular with leftists, but it showed he could stand up for what is right.
"Mathematics may be defined as the subject in which we never know what we are talking about, nor whether what we are saying is true."--Bertrand Russell
"The Picasso of modern philosophy."--A. J. Ayer describing Russell.
"Vomitive"--Wittgenstein's opinion on Russell's essays.
"Will machines destroy emotions, or will emotions destroy machines?"--Russell.
It's just unbelievable that a book who claims to discuss an introduction about Bertrand Russell in any moment (that's true) remarks his works on religion and atheísm and what he passed through for attacking the christianism. What such a deception!
Russell wrote ”The Wisdom in Western Philosophy” which he is most famous for. He was driven by three great passions: 1. the longing for love, 2. the quest for knowledge, and 3. heart rending pity for the suffering of humanity.
He created logical atomism. In order to discover if a statement is true we can break it down into its logical atoms and see whether these have been combined in a correct logical way.
Russell had quite a lot of thoughts in mathematics, for example believing that zero is a number and that no two numbers have the same successor. Russell held that the ultimate objective of both science and philosophy was to understand reality, not simply to make predictions.
Things that can not be verified shall not be talked about because it is pointless to argue about.
"A thing can not be itself and at the same time not itself" The world is divided by things that are apples and things that are not apples.
This is the first book in the series that I have read. It was gifted to me. The greatest asset of this book is that it does an effective job summarizing the life of Beteand Russell. Furthermore, the book does a very focused job of relating only the facts. There seems to be little judgment or evaluation of the actions taken by Bertrand. Finally, I must concede that the judgment and evaluation could be interpreted as selecting which facts the author chooses to include. Even if this were the case, Strathern does a good job of presenting the life of Bertrand in a fair and balanced way. At least as effectively as you can do that in 75 pages!
I enjoyed reading this light overview and biography of a serious thinker. It will not give you any depth, but it will give you a quick overview of the books you should read. It was a fun, light read.
One of the better 90 minute books, this placed bertrand russell into the historical line perfectly and totally made clear his place in the lineage of philosophy. Fantastic intro to his ideas, making their purpose, goals and achievements, shortcomings, ect all extremely clear to me.
The kind of book i would never have read 15 years ago because i would have derided it for its introduction-ness and dismissed it as 'for dilettantes'. Having recently remembered that i AM a dilettante when it comes to philosophy, i found it very informative.
