Was on the edge of my car seat as I drove listening to this book in the series, kept me entertained for a good potion of an 10-11 hour drive.
Was audibly laughing, gasping, smh, getting angry at Kevin the whole way through this book. I also enjoyed that we are getting different plot lines of what’s happening with Luna, Kevin, and Chloe
Suddenly young children are the undisputed leaders in groups of adults. It can be done, but this felt frustrating. My biggest grievance is the way the books are structured. I think this series could/should have been just a single book. One book ends (typically on a cliff hanger) and the next book picks up exactly where the previous left off as though it were the next chapter. It just seems gratuitous to me. Still engaged in the plot but was feeling a bit more frustrated with some aspects than I did with previous books.
I'm loving this series because it is different from her other books. Most alien books, TV shows and movies are in the point of view of adults. It's nice to read from the point of young teens. And of couse they struggle harder than most adults would. But still they would do anything to survive. The only negative part is that the book is to short. Maybe next time not many books in a series but just 3 or 4 but with more pages?
“Ascent” by Morgan Rice is the third book in “The Invasion Chronicles” series. The book follows the story of Kevin and Chloe, two young adult protagonists who are caught in a stream of confusion and unwanted adventure. The book is a science fiction thriller that is action-packed and sure to please fans of Morgan Rice's previous novels, along with fans of works such as “The Inheritance Cycle” by Christopher Paolini.
The book is well-written and the thriller elements are surprising in a sci-fi story that will reach adults as much as young adult audiences. The characters are powerful and believable, and the story is fueled by their actions and decisions. The book ends in the middle of a suspenseful moment, leaving readers wanting more.
Morgan Rice is a great storyteller and “Ascent” is no exception. The book keeps readers on the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next. The plot is well-developed and the pacing is just right, with action scenes that are exciting and well-written.
Overall, “Ascent” is a recommended winner for any who enjoy epic fantasy writing fueled by powerful, believable young adult protagonists. The book is quite accessible to readers of all ages and is a great addition to any sci-fi or fantasy bookshelf.
Ok so the third book of the series threw me for a loop. In a good way. The story went in a way that I completely did not expect or see. This book reminded me a lot of Orson Scott Card's - Ender's Game in a way. I can't say much without giving away what happens, but I am really enjoying craziness of this series and am looking forward to finding out what happens in the final book.
This has potential to be a half decent book if someone put in a bit of effort. As is, it’s really not worth more than 2 stars. Maybe even closer to 1 star.
3 things before I get started: I consumed this series as a digital audiobook. I do not proofread my reviews (iOS autocorrect does); neither do I draft multiple versions. I previously wrote a scathing review of Arrival and may refer back to it.
Here we go! 3.5 stars!
I mentioned in my review for Arrival that the cliches abounded and my opportunities were missed for continuation of the storyline by use of character development. The introduction of characters to the series in Ascent was handled really well. Tying that and the development of primary characters made for a more satisfying experience than I had while listening to Arrival. I began caring more about the fate of humanity in this installment. I also appreciate the use of aloofness/calculation to contrast with emotional range.
This is definitely a series which requires suspension of disbelief. Having consumed the second installment of the series with a doubting sensibility and not enjoying it, I decided to suspend my disbelief further than usual. This attitude adjustment played a role in my enjoyment. I think the author put more humanity/heart/soul into this installment.
If you read the first two installments and weren't sure about continuing, I suggest continuing.
This book cleaves the humans together. It cleaves the aliens' system apart & holds your attention.
In the Invasion Chronicles 3_ Ascent, the plight of Kevin and Chloe seem to roll along as though caught in a stream of confusion and unwanted adventure. They seem to roll through the never-ending turmoil of being lost, in pain and now they have been kidnapped from Sedona and drawn to the larger alien vessel to be exposed to things they can't even guess how they will affect them and their lives. It's different, but exciting, avenue for Morgan Rice to present yet another world of excitement and sudden endings which leave a person wishing for the next volume. She delights in the suddenness of her stories – no time to relax is allowed. Morgan Rice does not, nor ever has, provided a moment to catch your breath ! She has written 10 Series (some promising new stories - even today) and working on 4 more series. And so far, there are no breaks for you folks, including myself, trying to keep up. And, if you really like what you read on your own, she gives the first book of each series to you for free.
I was lucky enough to have been given this book...very enjoyable.
Book three of the series sees the darker side of nature - especially without emotions. And yet, emotions can also be responsible for the darker instincts to take hold.
The Hive was an intriguing concept - having no emotions allowing for all manner of justifiable actions, also justifying arrogance and selfishness beyond all else (though it could be argued that those traits are another kind of emotion, but maybe just a cold-hearted way of seeking survival). The idea of being a collective was fascinating in regard to communication and control.
This is a fast-paced science-fiction story that has characters that are very young and yet the ideas are thought-provoking and disturbing.
There were some errors but that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story. It will be interesting to see where it goes.
I don't know what's scariest about this installment in this series: mind control, live experimentation or having to literally fight for your life! With Kevin & Chloe captives of a race of self-important beings and basically at their mercy, we find Luna and her allies attempting everything they can to save Earth and its peoples from suffering the same fate that has been visited on countless other worlds. I will say that I - somehow - foresee Bobby-the-sheepdog having a larger part yet to play. Just a thought.
One more thing; speaking as someone raised by a rabid Star Trek father (check my name!), I can't help drawing parallels between certain storylines from both series: "Hives," "Nanites" & "Emotionless Beings." They all seem remarkably familiar somehow. Let's see how it plays out, shall we?
I am always on the look out for a fast paced series to get me jumping or should I say walking faster as I do my daily constitutional. I selected The Invasion Chronicles without a lot of research. I was not familiar with the author Morgan Rice so I thought I would take a chance. What could be wrong with science fiction, aliens invading the earth, and even zombies (?) being involved.
I will be brief on this and the other three books in the series because of these books was in itself was brief. When you have teenagers discovering an alien threat what else can you do. That's book 1.
Book 2 tells us Kevin is a pawn, but is he also going to be the savior of the world? Keep reading to find out.
Book 3 shows the terrible side of The Pure. What will happen to Kevin? What will happen to all the other races in the universe? What will happen to Earth? I can't wait to find out. Can you?
I finished this book in exactly 1 hour and 4 minutes. I would have started reading the fourth and final book in the series if it weren't for the fact that it was 1 am and I was too tired.
Anyway, I liked this book, but I liked the first two more. There were POV changes in this book, which didn't happen in the first two books so the POV switches seemed to come out of nowhere. Although I understand the changes were crucial to show us what was happening in different places, I preferred reading only from Kevin's perspective.
The only other character whose POV I liked reading was Ro. He had such a unique way of looking at things, and it was both amusing and interesting.
I'm now going to read Return and hope it doesn't disappoint.

I liked the extra POV from Luna in this book. Her POV had never been shown before so it was nice to get some more insight into her character.
I also liked the POVs from one of the aliens and Chloe. It definitely made the plot more interesting.
The action was much better in this book. The fights were more intense and the tasks that Luna and her friends had to face were trickier. There weren't any easy solutions this time.
The pacing was ok. A few chapters were slower than the rest though.
I was a little disappointed by the ending but I'm still going to read the next book.
Loved , loved this book. I couldn’t put it down!!! Ugh and it ends on another cliff hanger!!! I have found usually that multi set books get boring and more expensive as you read them, but not these it’s just as faced paced as the first book!! I totally recommend these books!!
This is a young adult sci-fi story, that starts with the first book, Transmission. The story continues to the last book in this series. I did buy the three books and I'm not sorry. Morgan Rice is a great storyteller and the last book keep me on the edge of my seat.
Great book. Riveting! The only issue I have, I want to read more. I need to know how our heros make it out of the predicament they are in. Looking forward to the next volume of this series... write fast, Morgan. :)
Young hearts with a desire to live, a desire to fight for their world, their very lives and those of others. A roller coaster ride of adventure for all the characters. A Great Read!
In her third book, Rice continues the saga of alien invaders and Kevin and his friends. Will Kevin and Chloe return. Will Luna become human again? Read and maybe find out
Wow this series just keeps getting better and better. Fun full throttle light Syfy. Not super hard core and for this I am thankful. Such a great read I can't wait for the next installment.
This is the first book in almost 20 years that I haven't even been able to finish. The first book was great, the second okay and this third one was just a total loss.
