Rate this book
Dark Horse is putting together a special book and keepsake package for die-hard Buffy fans. A handsome package combines a great Buffy adventure with a dazzling trio of special items featured in the story. Book is hardcover, about 80% of comic-book size, thread-sewn, utilizing a fine matte stock. The story is an expansion of The Final Cut, part of which first appeared as Buffy #8. New pages have been added by the original creative team. Actual elements from the story are visible through die-cut windows of the custom-crafted photo cover slipcase : Buffy`s trademark gold-colored cross, the Claddagh ring, and a glass vial of holy water with flakes of silver suspended in the fluid. The Graphic novel included is called “The Final Cut” and I know I have read this story before, but this edition is tweaked a little as I know it’s a bit different. It may be an extension of the original if I’m not mistaken. I really enjoyed it though. I’m going to have to look it up though, because it’s bothering me now that I can’t place it.

Marty a student at the school aspires to be a famous movie director, and stumbles across an old film case labelled “The final Cut” he takes it home to watch and discovers that the leading character in the movie is actually able to talk to him directly. He strikes a deal with the character trapped in the film and has no qualms about stepping on a few people to make it to the top and achieving his dream.

This collectors kit also comes with the Claddagh ring that Buffy and Angel wear to symbolize their relationship as well as the cross Buffy wears that Angel gave her and a small vile of holy water. It’s a great kit for any serious Buffy Fan. *laughing* I’m such a Buffy geek :0)

Ok, not the best Buffy book I have ever read and not the best graphic novel ever read either, but it kept me reasonably entertained while waiting for lunch to cook!

The general premise is that the soul of an actor is trapped in an old movie, and the Scooby gang are dragged inside so that he can offer up their souls to repay a debt. There's some mention of money owed to the mob too and a brief picnic with Angel!

It was missing a lot of the Buffy humour and to be honest, not many of the illustrations looked like their TV counterpart. Think I much prefer the novels written by Christopher Golden.

The set itself is cool, including a cross necklace, a tiny Claddagh ring, a bottle of holy water, and a hardcover graphic novel. As for the graphic novel, apparently it's a reprint of the 8th issue of the comic series that was running at the time. The art was pretty good, good enough that you can tell who is who, but the story itself was lackluster and seemed rushed and disjointed.

Once again I find myself with a publishing oddity while reading the Buffy comics. Issue #8 of the ongoing series is the only issue never collected in a regular trade paperback. Instead, it was expanded and included as a special hardcover graphic novel in the “Supernatural Defense Kit” collector’s pack Dark Horse released in early 2000. The Supernatural Defense Kit contained the expanded hardcover, Buffy’s cross necklace, a ring, and the vial of “holy water” that Angel gives her in the comic. (I suspect that the pages concerning that vial of holy water were some of the additions made, but I could be wrong.) If you don’t have a time machine or a lot of money to use on eBay, however, the expanded comic is also collected in Dark Horse’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer Omnibus, Volume III.

You’d think that Sunnydale High School students would know better by now, wouldn’t you? Apparently not though. SHS student Marty is an aspiring filmmaker, so when he finds an old black and white film in a storage closet, he takes it home for a private viewing. This being Sunnydale, the character in the film stops mid-film and offers to make him a star…for a price….

This was decent, actually. In this format, anyway–I’m not sure how they got this to work in a shorter version, I only spotted a few pages that could have been cut without serious damage to the story. My only real issue with it is an intense mystification as to how the Scoobies avoided some serious police scrutiny at the end, but I’ll shut up about that in the interest of avoiding spoilers. The writing was pretty solid, and the art was some of the best I’ve seen from this early era of the series. With no real concrete clues as to it’s placement, I’m assuming it happens pretty soon after the events of New Kid On The Block, or just before Buffy S03E11: Gingerbread.

CONTENT: No profanity, some mild rude slang. Brief innuendo, but no real sexual content. Violence consistent with the Buffy TV show, both vampiric and the normal variety. Some brief appearances of Buffyverse vampires, as well as some unrelated sorcery.

I liked the little comic book, but I swear I've seen that episode before! This is a really cool little set because it comes with the pendant and the ring Angel gave to Buffy (hee hee, I'm such a nerd)! The holy water was questionable, but still, it's pretty cool.

Great looking set. Fun items. Nice hard-bound comic book. But, I should've read more carefully... I thought it was an addition to Season 8, but it's to the Buffy comics that Joss wasn't involved with. The story was, well, lame.
