Staying with her uncle on his California farm, nine-year-old Dani feels unwelcome and unloved while she tries to come up with a plan to save her pet goat Tyler from the butcher.
The title refers to how long you can keep a beloved (male) baby goat when your uncle is a farmer before he gets SOLD TO SLAUGHTER. While this story comes up with a happy ending, it's one that's kind of a one-time thing . I feel like this girl has some heartbreak in her future unless she learns to attach only to female kids in the future and/or comes to terms with the business side of her relatives' way of life.
I read this one when I was probably 7 or 8 -- a fact I'd forgotten until I ran across it in an older book about children's books -- and while it's nice just because it's one of the few books to feature goats and how adorable (and mischievous) they can be, it's not one I loved revisiting.
