Echo always felt adrift in the world until she found a coven to call home. It was the family she wanted. But all good things come to an end, especially for her. Trusting the unpredictability of magic, a portal rips her away from oncoming danger in 1996, landing her in the past. Alone in unfamiliar territory, a potential rescue looms on the horizon. Suspicions arise at every turn. From dark secrets to hidden powers, she knows what she must do.
The only question is…
Who will be left standing when the storm finally breaks?
The adventure? Thrilling. The characters? Enrapturing. The romance? Immaculate. When I say this author weaves a rich tapestry of a story, I genuinely mean it. The connections made throughout the story were so beautifully set up and executed, everything fell perfectly into place like dominoes. I'm normally so hesitant to start a series -- which this the first installment of -- because I worry about worldbuilding, and I often have a hard time getting into a book/series if I come out of it with more questions than answers. This book answered every single I question I had at the beginning and did so in such a perfect full-circle way that was so relieving and bittersweet that I'm actually going to be waiting on pins and needles for the next book.
There are some pretty cool twists and turns that, before the reveal, I had thought, "Wouldn't it be *crazy* if [this] happened?" And then when it did, I was verbally excited and shocked. This was an amazing read and so much fun.
I am very grateful, as well, to have gotten an ARC for this, even if I ended up finishing it on release day.
Unsteady Waters by G.M Flores was incredible. I was fortunate to receive this story as an ARC and when I told you I devoured it — I ate it up. I’ve been following G.M Flores through fanfiction as well, incredible writing all around here folks!
We follow Echo through a portal (quite literally) where she is rescued by a pirate named Silas. (Hot). I will not share a single detail other than that. Because I’m going to need you to pick this up and read it for yourself. Available on Kindle Unlimited and for physical purchase as well! Get your hands on it today!

I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest review.
I want to start off with the things I liked about this book. I enjoyed the magic system; every witch having a special gift unique to them but still being able to do other magics. The portals were especially interesting as they can take the witches to other locations and time periods. I also enjoyed the setting of the book being in the 1700s on the tail end of pirates dominating the high seas. I've always had a soft spot for pirates and enjoy most books with them in it.
Echo was an interesting character with a lot of mystery in her past. I was hoping to get more light on her past in this instalment but I was disappointed by not receiving much. I think the plot would have been better with a bit more background to some hardships she went through to understand her actions and thought process. I'd have liked for there to have been more of a slow burn with her and the male lead because the quickness didn't really make sense. Overall Echo was a decent character and I hope with the next instalment there can be more development.
Silas in my opinion is the stereotypical character who thinks they are the bad boy but in reality are just a gummy bear. His character needs a bit more development to give him the depth as it seemed more superficial compared to Echo. I still enjoyed his character and I am looking forward to what happens to him in the next book.
Kieran was probably my favorite character from the book. His constant suspicion of other characters makes sense instead of just going with the flow like others, especially in that time period. I do hope we get a better look into his past because from what we get in this instalment in my opinion is not enough to understand certain actions of his.
The pacing for most of the book was something I enjoyed. I wish the ending had maintained the same pacing because it felt a bit rushed and covered too much information. I did enjoy how it came full circle but I'd have liked for some of the secrets to have been revealed in the next book.
Overall I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it if you enjoy romantasy. I will definitely be continuing with the series and I can't wait for the next instalment.
Witches, magic portals, pirates, and high stakes?! YES PLEASE! I was instantly excited to check out this book, which has so many of my favorite things about fantasy!
Our FMC Echo is a strong-willed, time-traveling witch who escapes danger and finds herself amid pirates on the open sea. She is alone in unfamiliar territory, with suspicions arising at every turn. She must conceal the secret of her identity at all costs. But, as she grows closer to two handsome pirates, she questions where this journey will take her. Echo is relatable and someone you'll instantly root for to find the family and security she's always longed for!
This leads us to our MMC Silas, the handsome redheaded pirate who's Captain of The Sea Serpent and is instantly drawn to Echo. He feels the need to learn everything about her and protect her, but he also has suspicions of his own. He's strong and guarded but also unexpectedly sensitive. Their chemistry is instant as they battle between getting closer and keeping their distance from each other.
Between the dark secrets, tension, high stakes, and romantic chemistry, I was so drawn to this story. The magic system was so interesting, and I loved learning more about it -- the possibilities seem endless in future adventures! A major plot twist had me kicking my feet and anxious to see what would happen next. It's exactly what you would hope for from a fantasy romance!
The open ending leaves me so excited and anxious for the next book in The Portal Witch series and what adventures might await Echo and Silas! Brava to G.M. Flores on this delicious tale!
If you like: 🔮 Fantasy Romance 🌊 Time Traveling Witches 🏴☠️ Pirates 🗡️ He's Obsessed With Her 🔮 Love Triangle 🌊 Open Door Spice 🏴☠️Found Family 🗡️ Dual POV …Then this is a book for you!!
From the moment I started reading, I was hooked by this book's enthralling narrative and intriguing universe. The fast-paced storyline kept me on the edge of my seat, and I found myself gasping out loud at the plot twists. While I wished for a bit more character development, but I’m thrilled that this will be a series. This means we have the opportunity to delve deeper into backstories in future installments!
The characters were exceptionally well-portrayed, showcasing their flaws and personal issues, which made them feel real and relatable. Kieran, in particular, stood out as my favorite character with his compelling arc and depth. The universe, especially with the pirates, was vividly brought to life, and the magic system was fascinating and seamlessly integrated into the story.
The ending was a masterpiece in itself—so well-written and brought everything full circle. I can’t stop thinking about how perfectly it wrapped up the narrative threads. In summary, this book is a thrilling and immersive read that I devoured quickly. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting adventure with complex characters and a richly crafted world.
After devouring this author’s many wonderful fanfics, it was a pleasure to read her first book. It transported me to another world entirely and gave me someone to root for and cry over. It’s not every day that you read a character that speaks to you, someone fiercely powerful but also flawed — because all of us are, and that’s okay. Echo is incredibly sassy and confident. And like all of us, she has reservations about who she trusts, and her wit is hilarious.
The other characters we’re introduced to are so vulnerable and human, and let’s be honest… ruggedly handsome. Also, even the smallest of characters ave such depth to them that are a joy to read about and root for.
I enjoyed how the relationships progress and the way the story unfolds, particularly the twists and surprises.
I couldn't stop reading this book. From the beginning, I related and loved Echo and her whole persona. She's a well written and captivating character. As soon as she first portal jumped, I was obsessed. Then, SILAS! I mean, Captain! I enjoyed getting his point of view and seeing his feelings for Echo grow. You can't help but root for a man like him and hope he finds happiness. Extremely well written. Plus, the spice was just perfection. It kept me intrigued and beautifully explained the emotions of the characters. The plot twist was insane, and G.M. did a wonderful job leading up to the big scenes. I was surprised by how the plot turned out and how all the characters and twists intertwined. Then, the ending made my heart just happy and complete. 10/10 I absolutely recommend this book to any fantasy lover. You won't regret this read.

I was extremely lucky enough to have been chosen for the early release of this book, and what a bloody treat it was.
Having followed the author’s fanfics, I was eager to devour her first original and she did not disappoint.
The magic in the story was easy to follow along with - I say that as someone who can sometimes struggle with the lore of magical names/origins in other well known books, but this was so my cup of tea.
I was immediately drawn into Echo’s characterisation and honestly related more to her than I thought I would.
Overall, I really enjoyed book 1 and I cannot wait for book 2.
I devoured this whole book in 2 days! I have enjoyed this authors written works in the fanfiction community and knew I was going to love this story!
The magic system was created beautifully and I enjoyed the pacing of the plot, as well as the pirates! I am excited to hopefully learn more about the past lives of some of the characters in the next book!
I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantasy! Can’t wait for the second book!
This was my first time reading a book like Unsteady Waters. I don’t usually gravitate toward this genre, but I truly enjoyed it. The blend of witchcraft, time travel, and pirate adventure made for a unique and exciting story. The characters were compelling, the emotions felt authentic, and the pacing kept me hooked from beginning to end. The ending left me eager to see what happens next, and I’m excited to read more from G.M. Flores.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I loved how the magic system worked in this in how each witch has a specific type of magic unique to them. I also loved the writing style because there were so many beautiful quotes, it was so well paced and I loved how vivid and atmospheric it was and I could just picture every scene so clearly in my head. I absolutely loved the relationship between Echo and Silas because it was so intense and you could cut the sexual tension with a knife; not to mention, those steamy scenes were so hot and sexy and the way that Silas just worshipped Echo was so beautifully written. I just absolutely loved how the character development progressed as the story went on and I just wanted to know more and more about each character. That reveal with Kieran towards the end had me shocked to the max, like WTF?! I am so itching for the sequel because I just need to know how this story is going to progress and I'm just so excited for more!
