Dare To Dream!: 25 Extraordinary Lives

Rate this book
Magical heroes like Harry Potter, Spiderman, or Catwoman provide plenty of entertainment for kids, but in real life heroes are made of sterner stuff than celluloid fantasies. In this inspiring collection of biographies―covering historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Helen Keller as well as contemporary figures such as Toni Morrison and Michael Jordan―critically acclaimed writer and psychologist Sandra McLeod Humphrey teaches young people that heroes were once ordinary people whose strength of character helped them to achieve extraordinary things. Starting with only their dreams, they worked hard and overcame obstacles to make their dreams come true. Some overcame physical handicaps, others psychological barriers like extreme shyness or feelings of inferiority; some faced racial discrimination or educational disadvantage, others financial burdens. In spite of these frustrations and discouragements, all of these people discovered in themselves the patience, perseverance, and determination to pursue their dreams beyond every obstacle. The message is No matter who you are or where you come from, you too can accomplish extraordinary things, as long as you dare to dream and never, never, never give up!

Won a autographed copy on goodreads.
Twenty-five profiles of various people who overcame challenges to achieve their dreams. I really liked the formatting of the book.
In a note to adults the author says that our young people are lacking heroes, goals and sense of direction to their lives and the intent of this book is to restore dreams and heroes to our young people. I am good with the goals and encouraging children to follow dreams. The word hero really elevates someone, and although all the people who are mentioned in the book followed dreams and succeeded in their public lives, a few I know of were and are not heroes in their personal lives. I know no one is perfect. Still really enjoyed the book and think it is an inspiring book for children and adults alike. I learned a lot about various people I had heard about, but did not know of their humble beginnings. There are a few people I would love to read a more intensive biography of now.
I especially loved the profile of Eleanor Roosevelt. "You gain strength and courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing you cannot do." "One's philosophy is best expressed not in words but in the choices one makes in daily living."
Sammy Sosa's quote struck a chord,"My life is a celebration of faith." Love that.
Would like to thank the author for my personalized copy. This is a book I will keep and recommend to others.

This is an interesting book of short biographical sketches of 25 people who overcame obstacles to reach their dreams. I found it to be both inspirational and fascinating! It includes people from the 1800's to the present with various dreams. I especially found the fact that many overcame poverty and disabilities to accomplish their dreams. I enjoyed reading about the people I've heard of but also about the ones I didn't hear about before reading this book. It encourages the reader to have a dream, commit to it and never give up. I recommend this to any young person.

Inspiring short biographical essays about 25 famous people who succeeded in life against many odds. Teachers could share selected stories as a read-aloud to spark discussions about significant people. Students might enjoy reading individual biographies of people they are interested in. While I like that the collection includes some personalities usually not included in such collective biographies (e.g. Gloria Estefan, Bill Cosby and Ellen Ochoa), numerous essays are about people who always appear in such books (e.g. Abraham Lincoln, Hellen Keller, Thomas Alva Edison, Martin Luther King Jr). Even though the collection includes people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, all are (or eventually became) Americans.

Short chapters on various people in history who have reached their goals--some of them, despite difficult odds.

I liked how the author included people who are well-known but not often thought of when thinking about extraordinary people. What a great way to show that people who start out from ordinary and often humble circumstances, can make a difference in many others' lives.

A few people I enjoyed learning more about:
Sandra Day O'Connor
Georgia O'Keeffe
Bill Crosby
Eleanor Roosevelt
Jackie Robinson
Wilma Rudolph
Toni Morrison
Heather Whitestone

25 ordinary people did extraordinary things with hard work, perseverance, determination, and living out their callings. This book is an inspiration.
With each biography being only 4 pages each, it is an easy read. But don't let the short chapters lead you to believe they are lacking. They are wonderfully crafted pictures into lives well lived.

I've always been drawn to stories of inspirational lives and this book got my heart pumping. It's an excellent gift for young girls and boys who need to know real life heroes like these 25.

Divided into "as a girl" and "as a woman/man" sections, each extraordinary life focuses on the obstacles, poverty, racial barriers, or physical limitations faced and overcome time and time again.

Do you know Toni Morrison's real first name? Anthony was her middle name and when she shortened it to Toni, it stuck. Who was called granny as a child because of her comely appearance? Find out in this easy-to-read 120-page book of authentic heroes and character education. I'm giving this to a few beautiful African American children I'm blessed to know not only for the excellent histories of overcoming racism in the stories of Arthur Ashe, Ben Carson, Maya Angelou, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Michael Jordan, but also for overcoming shyness in Norman Vincent Peale's story, and the very real obstacles girls and women still have to endure to succeed.
