The Doctor's Wife #2

A Viúva do Médico

The doctor's widow moves on. Love this follow-up to The Doctor’s Wife!

The Doctor's Widow (The Doctor's Wife #2) picks up after the first novel so this review may contain mild spoilers. Wait...who am I kidding? Wink wink at the book title.

Fern is the widow and enjoying her new single life. Life is good, her cheating husband is 6ft under, his mistress Alice is in jail, and she bought a lavish new house (with his money of course) and found a new man, Roger. But wait, there's more. She needs a baby to complete the picture and decides to get off her pills, Roger's baby will do.

Through it all, Fern reminds herself to act like a grieving widow and visits Doctor Drew's grave every now and then. OMG, I can't wait for karma to catch up to her. Fern is that villain I love to hate.

The Doctor's Widow is an addictive popcorn thriller. You might have to be in the right mindset to enjoy the unlikable characters. For me, it's entertaining to be inside her head. Daniel Hurst's books have become an auto-read for me and I know I'll be thoroughly entertained. This one is as good as I expected it to be.

I listened to this terrific audiobook with two narrators; Sarah Durham and Luke R. Francis were brilliant.

Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for my ALC.

4⭐
Genre ~ psychological thriller
Series ~ The Doctor's Wife #2
Others in the series ~ The Doctor’s Wife
Publication date ~ August 23, 2023
Page Count ~ 244
Audio length ~ 6 hours 54 minutes
Narrators ~ Sarah Durham, Luke R Francis
POV ~ multiple 1st
Featuring ~ 2 part story, murder, cliffhanger

Fern & Greg are dating, however she thinks his name is Roger.
Tomlin was the detective that put Alice away, and she gives her thoughts on that matter from the slammer.

If you read book 1 then you know Fern killed her hub and framed his mistress. Fern was acting so delusional in thinking she'd never get caught, but does she? You'll have to find out for yourself.

I love that we knew what Greg's intentions were the whole time, and he played his part pretty well.

Another exciting read from the author who likes to pump out book after book after book, which surprisingly never lack in quality.

Series notes:
A continuation from The Doctor’s Wife, so definitely read that one first. And it looks like there might be a 3rd book as there's a bit of a cliffhanger.

Narration notes:
They both did a fine job, but each one narrated 2 characters, so a differing of tones would have been nice. Sarah's male voices leave a little to be desired.

Everything is going Fern’s way. Her husband is out of the way, his lover in prison, and she has a new-found wealth and freedom. Plus, she has a new love interest in Roger. The future looks bright. After all, none of what happened in the past is her fault. She deserves the life she now has.

So, what could possibly go wrong?

A lot it seems….maybe Fern is a tad delusional. And Roger has a big secret.

And that is all I’m going to say about the plot.

This is just as much of a riveting page-turner as book #1 in the series. It’s incredibly entertaining to be inside Fern’s head and hear her thought processes.

If you haven’t, do read book #1 first. Better yet, listen to it. Both are fun addictive popcorn reads that my reading buddy, Marialyce, and I thoroughly enjoyed!

Fern’s story is not over yet, and I can’t wait till book #3 is released.

• I received a digital audio via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion

This is definitely a fast read, no fussing around. But, it’s hard to believe that a friend of the murdered husband would feel obligated to ‘discover’ the truth by becoming the wife’s boyfriend.

A gripping, fast paced, fun book that delivered on all levels!!! Daniel Hurst has wowed me yet again! I enjoyed The Doctor’s Wife it left me with my jaw hanging open at one of the twists. I was so excited when I saw that there was another book in the series coming out. As with the first book, The Doctor's Widow was fast paced, well thought out, and riveting! I did not want to put this book down. If you have not read The Doctor’s Wife, I highly recommend reading it prior to reading The Doctor's Widow. You will be happy you did. Both are terrific!

Fern Devlin was once married to Doctor Drew Devlin. He cheated on her and is now dead...

Fern has collected the life insurance money and moved on with her life. She is happy and looking forward to the future. She wasn't looking for romance when she met Roger in a bar, but she couldn’t resist his charms, his looks, and his honesty. But Roger makes a slip and Fern begins to wonder, just how much does Roger know about her and her life with her late husband.

Woohoo!!! This was a fun ride. Daniel Hurst writes books and characters that I can't get enough of. They are pure enjoyment, shocking, full of twists, and hard to put down. Being able to get inside Fern’s head was a blast! Plus, the ending.... well done, sir, well done!

Well written, gripping, fast paced and left me wanting more.

I can't wait to read what Daniel Hurst writes next!!!

I had both the book and the audiobook which made for a fabulous reading experience. I loved the narration of the audiobook. Very well done.

She's baaaack!

Fern Devlin, the widow of Dr. Drew Devlin, is back.

And so is her handsome, spontaneous, trusted, and caring friend "Roger", AKA "Greg", who unbeknownst to Fern, also happens to be an ex-cop and a former friend of Fern's deceased husband.

In Daniel Hurst's "The Doctor's Wife" (Book #1), we learned that Fern is a manipulative "femme fatale" who murdered her husband, framed her husband's lover for the murder, and murdered her accomplice.

"Roger" suspects Fern of her crimes.

Can "Roger" trick Fern into confessing?

Will Roger's "entrapment" plan be successful?

Prolific author Daniel Hurst's newest popcorn thriller is well-paced with a compelling score of unlikeable characters and eye-rolling moments.

Although the book lacked Hurst's trademark dark humor, I was never tempted to push the stop button on my phone.

I listened to the audiobook, read by Sarah Durham and Luke R. Francis.

Both narrators did a superb job with the narration but the book would have benefited from additional narrators (or at least one additional female narrator) since the book unfolded from four different POVs.

Will "The Doctor's Lover" be the upcoming third book in this series?

(I hope so!)

You'll have to read "The Doctor's Widow" to discover why.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

EXCERPT: The police really thought they had me when they kicked down my door and burst into my home.
They burst through the new door that belonged to the expensive house that I'd only just bought. When I settled the estate agent's fees and accepted the keys, I had no idea that the beautiful property that I had purchased would soon be swarming with police officers.
But it was.
Dozens of men and women, all of them in black and white uniforms, and all of them eager to wrap my wrists in handcuffs and march me outside to one of the waiting vehicles, while my new neighbours stopped and stared at the unsavory scene happening right in front of them in their quiet street in an affluent suburb.
That was their plan, anyway. But, as has been the case for a while now, the police's plan has always differed greatly from my own.

ABOUT 'THE DOCTOR'S WIDOW': I loved my husband, Doctor Drew Devlin, but he betrayed me. And now he’s dead.

As I put the key in the lock and open the door to the luxurious new home I’ve purchased with Drew’s life insurance money, I’m certain the worst days are behind me. My secret is safe, and I can’t wait to enjoy my new wealth and freedom.

Then I meet handsome Roger. I wasn’t looking for a relationship but as we spend our evenings drinking wine on my sunny terrace, I realise he’s just what I need right now. Roger is nothing like Drew, he’s spontaneous and romantic. And most of all, he’s honest.

He thinks I’m a rich, lonely woman. He’s wrong of course, there’s so much more to me…

But then one night, when we’re curled up in bed together, Roger says something that makes my blood run cold. I think he knows the truth about my life as the doctor’s wife.

I will do anything to stop my past from catching up with me… But is Roger really who he says he is? Or is my life now in danger?

MY THOUGHTS: Daniel Hurst writes entertaining books and the follow-up to The Doctor's Wife, The Doctor's Widow, is no exception. I will point out here, before you read any further, that you really do need to have read The Doctor's Wife before you read this, the second book in the series. Is there going to be a third? I would think so, and the ending here seems to indicate that there will be.

Fun, entertaining, and with unexpected twists, The Doctor's Widow is a fast and easy read/listen. Told from the points of view of Fern, Alice, Greg/Roger, and occasionally the detective on the case, this story has it all! Fern can appear to be quite normal at times, but underneath she is scheming and manipulative. She is going to let no one, and nothing, stand in her way of living the good life now that she has successfully disposed of her cheating husband Doctor Drew Devlin. She has everyone feeling sorry for her. What they should be doing is feeling scared of her!

This is one crazy read! Okay, I admit I rolled my eyes a couple of times as it's not always believable, but it is always fun.

I read and listened to The Doctor's Widow, narrated by Sarah Durham and Luke R Francis. While each narrated two characters, they didn't have a great tonal range, and Sarah's rendition of the male voices left a lot to be desired. It would make more sense if Sarah narrated the female characters and Luke the male.

I loved this second installation of the Doctor’s Wife series. The Doctor’s Widow is everything I want in a thriller. The tension is high and so are the stakes for Fern. Will she have what it takes to get away with murder, or will she be her own worst enemy? Is it wrong to root for a serial killer? I found that I was doing that throughout this twisty, addictive thriller. I love Daniel Hurst’s writing. He cleverly pulls you in while keeping the tension high and making you race to the shocking and satisfying conclusion. I am already looking forward to book 3 of this must-read incredibly entertaining series. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pop some popcorn, put your feet up, and entertain yourself with the continued saga of Fern Devlin. In Book 1 she went from wife to widow. In addition to Fern's POV we also have Greg(introduced at the end of Book 1), Alice(the mistress), and the less than competent police detective. We know exactly what Fern has or hasn't done. Will the authorities get smart? Fern is a deliciously diabolical MC and I quite enjoyed this one in audio format. Onward to the next book featuring Alice.

“Things are very different now that I am the doctor’s widow.”

This sequel got off to an exciting start; the writing was fresh and the pace was quick. The prologue set the tone and raised questions that propelled me into the heart of the story. I had so many questions that needed answers!

Once I realized that this was a case of the player getting played, I was shamefully excited to see if Fern got her just desserts. A string of questionable deaths and a sizeable life insurance policy created problems for Fern.

I loved how Fern Devlin, the doctor’s wife, came across as a Cheshire cat with a big grin. I knew that the confidence Hurst had crafted her with would be her downfall and I couldn’t wait to find out how.

“I am doing even better as the doctor’s widow than I was as the doctor’s wife.”

“I’m moving on from Doctor Drew Devlin and feeling much better about this next chapter of my life.”

The theme of control, retribution, illusion, and moving on were woven throughout the story. I loved watching the widow, the tennis buddy and the mistress all trying to keep up the veneer of deception.

However, the writing style of the prologue didn’t carry through to the rest of the book. So much so, that I wondered if Hurst was still writing or if he’d handed the reins to someone else.

I’ve loved all of Hurst’s books, but I felt this one lacked emotion. Many events could have been elevated by more emotional responses, but where I was shocked the most was the event in 6E. THAT should have had more tension, fear, and panic. Was it due to the lack of dialogue tags? Perhaps. Written in first person, though, you’d expect more feeling or passion. It was as though the characters were simply reporting what happened. In addition to emotion, I felt the characters weren’t unique enough; they all sounded the same. There was no individual voice. I thought this odd, given the story was told in multiple POV.

Regardless, I was entertained and Hurst has left it open for a sequel. I’m not letting my disappointment with this one stand in my way of enjoying any future books by this author!

I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.

The Doctor's Wife #2

I loved my husband, Dr Drew Devlin, but he betrayed me. And now he's dead. As I put the key in the lock and open the door to the luxurious new home I've purchased with Drew's inheritance money, I'm certain the worst days are behind me. My secret is safe, and I can't wait to enjoy my new my new wealth and freedom. Then I meet handsome Roger, I wasn't looking for a relationship, but we spend our evenings drinking wine on my sunny terrace. I realise he's just what I need right now. Roger is nothing like Drew, he's spontaneous and romantic. And most of all, he's honest.

First of all, if you haven't read The Doctor's Wife, I highly recommend that you read that book before you start reading this book. For those of us who have read The Doctor's Wife, we already know most of the contents of this book. Fern Devlin is back, and she's even more twisted than before. I loved the Doctor's Wife, so when I saw there was a sequel, I was so happy to get an early copy of The Doctor's Widow. But my happiness was short lived. When I got to that ending,,,, I was thoroughly enjoying this fast-paced read. So much so that I devoured it, but that ending, why did you end it on a cliffhanger? I do hope that there will be a third book to tie up all the loose ends.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DanielHurst for my ARC of #TheDoctorsWidow in exchange for an honest review.

A worthy follow up!

Oh my Miss Fern, you are really something! The question is what is that something?

Poor Fern, she had it all, the wife to a prestigious doctor, money, friends, and one has to feel sorry for her after the tragic death of her husband. Left on her own and lonely, she finds another man, Rodger, who seems to be an ideal mate, but it has only been four months since her husband died. Is it to soon, or is Rodger one to heal her supposed wounds?

You know what they say about pillow talk? In this case some loose lips might just sink a ship one thinks they are riding on. Fern loves to make excuses and justify all types of her behavior. (sounds kind of familiar these days). In other words, she is a real piece of work, and we wonder if Fern might eventually come up against a brick wall, or is she destined to be one who is lost to the wind.

It seems quite possible that we will have to find out more in book 3.
A fine follow up to Mr Hurst's first The Doctor' Wife book, one that kept me listening and eager to hear more of the escapes of Fern and Roger.

Thank you to Daniel Hurst, Bookouture, narrated by Luke R. Francis, Sarah Durham who did a fine job, and NetGalley for the ability to listen to this story.
Jan and I enjoyed our sojourn with Fern and are both fooling forward to a continuation of her tale. Another fun listen to with my book buddy was had!

The Doctor's Widow is filled with twists and turns, some of which I had not anticipated. For that reason, as well as a good plot, perfectly paced writing and interesting characters, this book gets five stars from me. There are some holes in the plot but here's hoping they'll be addressed in the book that follows this one. Thanks to Daniel Hurst for a book that is a cut above. Highly recommend.

Pretty much a one sitting read for the latest in this outstanding authors books, difficult to say much about it as don’t want to give it away and also know a lot of people read Book 1, if you didn’t or if you want to refresh your memory on the story there are flashbacks to Book 1
Really best thing to say is that if ‘you know who’ did sequels then they would have done this 😀
Superb and even though it seems some people don’t like you mentioning endings in reviews I am gonna say this is a momentous ending, two times over and will bowl you over
Brilliant!…

This is Book #2 in The Doctor’s Wife series. In the first book, Fern murdered her cheating husband, Dr. Drew Devlin and framed his lover, Alice, for the crime. Having enlisted Alice’s husband to help her, she also killed him, making it look like a suicide. Now she is happily spending Drew’s very large life insurance policy money and a new man has entered her life. But, is he truly who he says he is? Or will he be her downfall?

I enjoyed the first book in this series; I thought it clever and entertaining. This one, a true sequel, not as much. I did like the chapters written from alternating POVs, learning the inner thoughts of all the main characters. While Fern wasn’t all that likable in the prior story, she was presented as even shallower and more one dimensional in this one. Some of the motivations of the characters were a bit incredulous. Despite this, I couldn’t put the book down. The ending set up a third installment in this series. I’m not sure I care enough to pick it up unless there is a really original plot twist…which is what I am hoping for!

***3.5*** Rounding it up!

Like the Doctor’s Wife, the second book in this fun thriller did not disappoint. It’s a really fast read with fun twists and turns.

Fern is an interesting character. She is smart, manipulative, devious and dangerous yet in a weird way some what likeable.

Roger/Greg character didn’t really make sense for me however I still kept on going, curious to find out what he will do next?

I also wonder what Alice and Fern will do to each other?

I will give a little break from this series as I really need to catch up on so many books.

A fun twisty read!
Enjoy 🍷

There is barely any dialogue in this book. It felt more like a short novella rather than a full book. It should have been a novella. The story could have actually been wrapped up in Book 1. There shouldn’t be any reason for a Book 3 (or 2). All the unnecessary fillers could have been removed and this story could have just been added as a bonus chapter or two to Book 1. I did enjoy Book 1 though.

Tai antroji serijos "Gydytojo žmona" knyga. Pirmoji istorija man skaitėsi labai lengvai ir įtraukiančiai.

Nepasakyčiau ir to, jog knygos atomazga labai nustebino. Nepaisant to, buvo smagu perskaityti šį tęsinį. Įdomu ką autorius yra mums dar paruošęs.

Antra dalis pati geriausia, nei pirmoji. Labai patiko ir dauk įvykių ir nebuvo nuododu skaityti. 📖😍👌

4.5 stars around it up to five! What a fun read. Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC - make sure to get this upon its release in a week!

After reading the first book in the series I was super excited to see what our friend Fern was up to. With Alice locked away & the new lease on life, she is navigating the life of a doctors widow while still on the high of her latest victories. Like the first book in the series, this is sure to keep you guessing & on your toes - it is a fast paced exciting read. I thought I had it figured out about 10 times, but in true Daniel form I was completely wrong. I personally love having a villain as the main character because it offers a different perspective and I found myself wondering what she would do next and trying to figure if she would or wouldn’t get away with it. The tie in of characters from the first book was well done too and made me feel more connected to all of their pasts.

This is an excellent sequel, while it felt a bit similar to the first book in parts it really picked up and left me yearning for more.

The ending of the book truly threw me for a loop, and I am very excited to see any sort of continuation with the characters.

Nusimato dvieju moteru kersto dvikova🤭😃

Omg what a fabulous follow up to book 1. Im lucky enough to have read book 1 but you dont have to in order to read this. There is a good recap at the start and the action is well paced throughout I enjoyed every single word. The book burb gives the best synopsis of the book i would just spoil it.
GRIPPED to the end . Story is told from pov of multiple characters both men and women which gives the novel more substance and depth to the characters . At times i felt the story progressed a little too quickly but as i was hoping the end rewarded me by saying i nay be right.
Thank you so much net gallery publisher and Daniel Hurst . So look forward to the next one. Solid 5 stars

Nepaisant to, psichologinis trileris tikrai stiprus ir man patiko.
