From USA Today Bestselling Author Kennedy Layne comes a gripping first installment in a crime fiction series that follows Homicide Detective Kinsley Aspen as she navigates a web of small-town secrets while dealing with the haunting truths of her past...
A quiet community in northern North Dakota was shattered in the aftermath of two grisly murders. The Fallbrook Killer walked free, thanks to George Aspen's unflinching defense. But for his daughter, Homicide Detective Kinsley Aspen, the acquittal is a scar that refuses to heal—on her career, her conscience, and the town's fragile sense of security.
Now, one year later, a mutilated body is found in a desolate barn—the woman’s death horrifyingly reminiscent of the Fallbrook killings. Panic ricochets through the town as whispers of the killer’s return spread like wildfire. Kinsley is thrust into a relentless investigation, but this time, it’s more than a case—it’s a reckoning.
Because Kinsley has a secret. A very dark, monstrous secret—the killer they are hunting is a copycat. The real Fallbrook Killer has been dead for a year. She knows this because she was the one who pulled the trigger.
As the body count rises and the walls close in, Kinsley must face a terrifying how do you stop a killer when the monster might be staring back at you in the mirror?
Kennedy Layne is a USA Today bestselling author. She draws inspiration for her romantic thrillers in part from her not-so-secret second life as a wife of a retired Marine Master Sergeant. He doubles as her critique partner, beta reader, and military consultant. Kennedy also has a deep love for cozy mysteries, thrillers, and basically any book that can keep her guessing until the very end. They live in the Midwest with their menagerie of pets. The loyal dogs and mischievous cats appreciate her writing days as much as she does, usually curled up in front of the fireplace.
Wow, I finished reading this book late last night, but have just come back to do my review so I could have some time to process! What I will say is that this author is renowned for her suspense books and this one though slightly different in style packs no less of a punch🤛 Highly recommend any of her books🙌
While reading, I also try to put the pieces together (my Sherlock Holmes hat 🎩)… I guessed the motive correctly, I just got the killer wrong - though the surprise of who it was shocked me…hence the processing time to write my review.
Kinsley is a homicide detective in her small town. Kinsley is called in by her partner Alex, when a body is discovered in a gruesome manner. Together they investigate to discover who would have wanted her dead and why they are trying to pin it on someone else. As they unravel the secrets in this small town will it lead to discovery of the secret that Kinsley also harbours?
Wow! First, I love the new characters. Second…holy cannoli. I’m usually not a fan of the premise of this book, and that’s all I’ll say because I don’t do spoilers.
But the story and characters are so powerful that I could not stop reading. I’ll admit I was a bit stressed over said premise. But the book is so good I had to know. And while that major thread was not resolved in this book knowing more by the end leads to an intriguing thread that is through this series.
As usual this author has hooked me. She is such a great storyteller teller and has fast become a favorite of mine. NOW I need book 2.
A year ago, a man Calvin Gantz, was acquitted of murdering two women. Kinsley Aspen is a homicide detective and was the one who arrested the “Fallbrook Killer” as Gantz was named. Gantz disappeared after his acquittal and hasn’t been seen since. When another woman is found in a barn with her throat slit, most think the Fallbrook Killer is back. Kinsley knows better because she’s the one who got rid of him.
I know this is short but I had a hard time writing a review without giving anything away. I read this in one day. Action. Secrets. Suspense. There are a couple of different point of views. A little cliffhanger. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
This one started out slow for me, not unusual with a new series, you have all these new characters to learn about and to figure out what is going on. Kinsey is hiding more than normal and it isn't until you get to the very end of the book you realize just what and why and honestly, I don't fault her the choice she made, I probably would have done the same.
The case that Kinsey works on through the book is crazy! Seems fairly straight forward, but every witness is lying, takes a bit for Kinsey and her partner to get to the bottom of things and when they do, the why and who is sad. Such a selfish person.
With how this one ended, I am looking forward to the next book. I really want to know what Kinsey's dad says after what she told him and to see where things go from here.
Wow!! Great book! Start to a series of many many books, hopefully
Loved the book. Kennedy Layne does it again! Love all of her books that I have read. Kinsley is a homicide detective in a small town in North Dakota. She is always cold - like me in Minnesota. She has a few secrets of her own, but in this book she is after a killer who chased a women and cut her throat in an old barn. A killer who did similar things and was acquitted over a year ago has not been seen around town since then. Is this the killer who has returned to kill again. Kinsley does not think so. She and her partner Alex are investigating the murder. Then the women’s brother is in an accident which almost kills him. Great book. Looking forward to the next one.
Has the Fallbrook Killer struck again? When Detective Kinsley Aspen and her partner are called in on a murder investigation, her partner is sure that the killer is back. But there is a secret that only Kinsley and one other person knows, he can't be the Fallbrook Killer, because she killed him a year ago and threw his body in the lake.
But, now, will the secret come out and threaten Kinsley's life and one other? She has to keep the secret and find out who is doing the recent killing!
This is a fun, easy mystery with just the right mix of suspense and small-town charm. If it wasn’t so good, I’d want to live there! Kinsey is a compelling character - tough, smart, loyal, and her secret is clearly weighing on her. The other characters are great too and I look forward to getting to know them. I’ve read Layne’s other series, which I personally like better, but it’ll be fun to see where she leads this cast of characters!
I really enjoyed the first book in this new series. The author does a masterful job of weaving a current with something that is ongoing. You get the satisfaction of solving the current case. You are left wanting more about the ongoing issues the main character faces. I liked Kinsley Aspen who is a complicated woman. I can't wait to read more. I would highly recommend this book.
The book was just a little on the slow side. The ending of the main story was non climatic. The very end with her talking to her dad at the end was the best part of the book. I am not sure how you can make her a good character if she is a murderer. I agree with her killing him but how do you come back from that. I am hoping he somehow lived and then the story would really become good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Kennedy Layne has you sitting on the edge of your seat with this book. There’s really two stories in one, Aspenʼs secrets and the investigation into Rachelʼs murder. There are a lot of twists and turns, each leading you in a different direction. It really gets you thinking, whodunnit.
Wow! Ms. Layne knocks another one out of the ballpark. I can't read her books fast enough to get through them all. This is a phenomenal and chilling thriller. It's the first book of this series. Be prepared to carve out some time before settling in to read this one. It's excellent!
Whisper Left Behind ( A Kinsley Aspen Novel Book 1) Kennedy Layne
A great thriller. A murder to solve and who did it? Plenty of people are on the list but it could only be one. Research and Detective work find out. There are many secrets that unfold.
This one took a little while to get me into the mystery but it was pretty good with the twists and figuring out the killer. Interested in the mystery that was going on in the background.
I was interested in the story but it stops with the words, The End, but there is no end, no what happened. Basically, I just wasted a few hours of my life.
This was a great story from beginning to end. The twists and turns were paced extremely well. My only complaint is how the book ended on a cliffhanger!! 😝
