Trust is a four-letter word…

Command Force Alpha, Book 2

Captain Laurence Madigan is an anomaly—a levelheaded risk taker who learned the dark side of life in Manchester’s slums. He needed those skills to survive fourteen months as a prisoner of Firebird, a shadowy Russian cartel.

When rescued, he receives less than a hero’s welcome. He’s considered a wild card—or even a double agent. After enduring agony and degradation for Command Force Alpha, he’s determined to clear his name and bring Firebird down…even if it means escaping CFA’s London facility with a very personal hostage.

Oxford-educated psychologist Gemma Calloway should fight her abductor tooth and claw, but loyalty to her old friend wins out. Isolated in a rustic hideaway, she tends his wounds and can’t help staring at his scars and prison tattoos.

Their impromptu safe house becomes a haven of uneasy trust and potent, gathering desires. As they sort present dangers from past affection, Gemma realizes she’s in over her head…and up to her heart with longing for a good man whose last reason for living could be revenge.

This book contains a sexy British spy whose year-long imprisonment has left him a little…pent-up. And scarred. And possibly untrustworthy. Watch out for fast-and-furious sexuality, dares that cement a friendship against all odds, and oh-so-wrong but oh-so-sexy tattoos.

Torture, mind games and revenge … the three things that Captain Laurie Madigan has embedded into his very being. Enter his best friend, psychologist Gemma Calloway. After Laurie is rescued from the hands of “Firebird”, it's up to Gemma to see if Laurie is fit for duty with CFA. What transpires is a test of wills for both of them … the coming of age of the deep feelings they have for each other … discovering the difference between revenge and winning the war against Firebird.

We are brought into the mind of a man that has had every type of torture done to him … water, blades, electricity … a noose hung just out of reach. A man that didn't give up his comrades in CFA but, in the end, made a pact with the devil to get it to end. Now, rescued, he has to live with the decisions that he made and try to make good on exacting his revenge and not betraying his brothers and sisters. He also has to face the one woman that he dreamed about, his salvation from going crazy while in captivity. Will she see him for what he has become or will see see the Laurie that she joked with, had coffee with, shared a kiss with?

Gemma has to make an assessment. It's so hard facing the man that Captain Madigan has become. She remembers the fun times, the dares. Will she ever be able to get him to break and tell her everything that has happened? Being used as a shield and on the run was not what she had in mind when facing the one man that could either make her or break her. She also didn't count on posing as a hooker, being sexually used in front of an audience, just so Laurie could get his revenge. She soon realizes that she will do whatever it takes to help the Laurie she knows and loves get back to reality....even facing her own demons of the past.

When the past and the present come together, when Gem realizes the depth of torture Laurie was put through, when the sex that Laurie needs comes to fruition, the book explodes. Finally, everthing that they have both ever wanted was coming true. But, before they could have their happily ever after, they need to face all that has happened and make a plan for the future with CFA.

Written with the flare of Katie Porter, Snap brings us the broken Laurie and his savior Gem. What a wonderfully written story that never left me looking for more. It was all written into a book filled with angst, determination and, eventually love. From the break-out to the torturous end, Katie Porter had me turning the pages to see what stunt Laurie was going to pull next, how Gemma was going to react and how he was finally going to face his fears, his past, his love for Gem.

This was better than the first book in the series, but it still didn't do enough to keep my attention. The first 20% was great, the next 60% was utterly boring and then the last 20% was great and helped make up for the lackluster middle section, somewhat. I can say that the author definitely picked up the suspense/action in this book, which was much appreciated. The first book had almost none at all, despite the occupation of the characters, so it was great to have something that kept me intrigued.

Laurie was introduced to us in the first book as a member of the Command Force Alpha team who had been kidnapped, imprisoned and tortured in Russia for over a year. When this book starts, we know that he's been rescued and is currently being evaluated to determine if he can be trusted and whether or not he's compromised the team. Gemma is the person accessing him and was one of his best friends before his disappearance. They also had a great chemistry and there were hopes that the friendship would turn into more. Now she's the enemy in Laurie's eyes and he's not sure if he can trust her or not. Laurie is still on a revenge mission and will not let anyone get in his way in tracking down those responsible for his torture.

What happens after this is Laurie taking Gemma hostage, escaping the CFA facility and running to a safe house. Gemma cares for Laurie's injuries while they're stowed away and she tries to really dig into his psyche to see if he's still loyal to the team and to her as well. We're taken on their journey to a renewed friendship combined with a sexual one this time around - all while they're in pursuit of his Russian captors. Things definitely get interesting (like the strip club scene) between the two of them and they both have a hard time trusting the other completely.

The middle part of the book was pretty boring and I actually started listening to another book for a while before eventually making my way back to this one. The end was actually pretty good. We finally get some resolution, lots of action (some graphic scenes as well, so be warned) and of course their kind of HEA. There's no epilogue and I'm sure their relationship developments will be noted in the next book, but I felt as though things were still up in the air for them. They never really voice that they want to give a relationship a try, never discuss the future past him getting his job back - so it was really just left open-ended and I don't feel as though we got any closure or resolution. He overcomes his demons (maybe) and that's about it.

Because of the boring middle and the lack of a true ending, I gave this book 3.5 stars. The beginning and end really were great, but other than that, there isn't a whole lot to love.

Snap is the second installment of Porter’s “adventurous, La Femme Nikita-inspired series of military erotic romances,” Command Force Alpha. This romantic suspense tale is not of the carefree, adventurous Romancing the Stone ilk; it’s a darker, brooding tale of survival and retribution. The urge to read the next page is as addictive as the attraction between the two main characters. And Snap is as addictive as they come.

We are introduced to Captain Laurence Madigan (his friends call him Laurie), who we meet after being rescued from a “hellish year as a detainee” in a secret Russian prison. He moves from prisoner to captive by his own team, a status that does not sit well with him. His colleagues consider him a wild animal.

Sent in to interrogate him is his best friend, Gemma Calloway, Command Alpha Force’s psychologist. She’s also the secret woman of his dreams. Each time she tries to get a glimpse beneath Laurie’s protected façade, he balks and holds his silence “for what seemed like a full rotation of the earth.” Despite their underlying chemistry, neither Laurie nor Gemma ever acted on their attraction. What drove them closer was a shared competitive streak. But even good chemistry can bubble over the lip of the Erlenmeyer flask and morph into something else entirely—hello, vulcanization?

Try as he might, Laurie’s sanity is on the knife’s edge of balance. A year alone in a dank prison, tortured at the hands of a sadist, can wear on the most even-tempered person. Initially, he tries to portray a certain composure—but that doesn’t last long. When Laurie decides to make a break for it, forcing Gemma to go along, it’s explosive. And what ensues is an adrenaline-laced adventure that’s better than a sweaty workout at the Y. It’s awesome.

Porter leads the reader on a vengeful quest through the U.K.. She peppers the active narrative with glimpses of Laurie’s life in the CFA; his experiences with Gemma; and the insidious torture he received at the hands of a madman. The balance is well-paced, and the relationship between the two main characters is challenging and very sexy.

Laurie’s vengeful purpose is his driving force—to stop the man who took such pleasure in torturing him. Because while he had survived, figured out how to tuck the worst of his pain and suffering into mental compartments that allowed him to endure, Laurie ultimately succumbed to the torture: “The water had been so devastating that he’d made a deal with the devil to get free.” It’s a deal he never intended to make, and certainly never intended to see carried out. It’s a deal he is fighting to halt with every breath he takes. Fortunately, something inside of Gemma shifts during his escape, and she’s just as intent on seeing his battle to the very end.

The benefit of being friends before lovers is that nuances aren’t lost on your partner. You can anticipate moods and reactions; you can intuit smiles and gestures. Gemma and Laurie are caught up in something bigger than the whole of their individual selves. They’re a team now, and once they finally give in to the inevitability of their fate, everything just snaps into place.

I love a tale of retribution and vengeance, because when the outcome is just and merited, the reward is so sweet.

Trust, confidence, reliance, hope... Snap main theme. Is it hard to put your faith in someone else's hands? You should read this, to find out.

Snap is a fast-paced thriller that keeps the reader guessing along the way, and wanting more at the end. The plot is very well written with great intensity built and very hot vibe. Oh yeah, the combination of danger and sex can always be explosive, in Snap it blows the reader's mind.

Ms. Porter's characters are so well developed that is easy to connect with them. Almost from the beginning of the book, I was cheering along with the couple and I was able to relate and understand them. By the end of the book I was in love with Gemma and Laurie. Oh, Gemma, in a quiet sort-of-way, she is her own kick-ass heroine.

I do love a good plot. When a plot has steamy scenes without making the book seems cheap and disconnected I'm in heaven. The passionate scenes of Snap are HOT HOT HOT! Panty-wetter HOT! Jump-your-significant-other-HOT! The author's description is so spot on and fresh at the same time, that it gives the readers tingling feelings.

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Romantic Suspense.

Second book in the C.F.A. series and though each book is a stand alone you’ll enjoy it better if you’ve read book one. That mentions the capture and disappearance of Laurie, and introduces some of the characters we meet in this book. this novel is centred around Laurie who finally escaped after fourteen months of imprisonment and torture, and is undergoing Psych assessments by his colleague and good friend Gemma. He was taken by a Russian group called Firebird, and as he’s wearing their tattoo there’s a question of his loyalty to be answered. Is he back with C.F.A. or is he a double agent?

While he’s undergoing yet another session with Gemma he takes the chance to escape – he wants to clear his name and bring down Firebird, and he knows the movements of a key member but needs to move fast. He could involve C.F.A. but wants to go it alone, he thinks they’ll wait for more info and miss the narrow time window to get him.

Its another fast paced, intriguing and suspense packed novel. Add on to that the fact that he and Gemma have a tentative history of attraction that was never quite given in to, and the sensuality is clear right from the start. Thrown together in hiding from C.F.A. Gemma needs to make a decision – go with him, her friend Laurie, trust him that he’s not playing her, or do what she ought to do and turn him in? Trust – that’s where it comes in, and Laurie also needs to trust her, to believe she’s with him and not playing him, leading him back to capture. Its a steamy, carnal, erotic ride when the two finally give in to the lust between them. Is it just lust though or could there be more? do they trust each other and can anything come of their fledgling relationship.

I really enjoyed this read – I’m not a huge suspense reader but this is just the right amount for me. A group of people that I feel I know and like, suspense that's easy for me to follow ( I hate it when it gets overcomplicated and I’m always two steps behind) and when there’s a solid romance with some risqué sensuality thrown in that makes a perfect read for me.

Stars: Five.

Well the only problem I have with reading a book by Katie Porter is, she doesn't just tell a story, she draws you in and makes you take notice. Her stories are full of course hot steamy sex, but suspens and intruige. I have fallen for this series from the first chapter of book one. And as great as it was, this one is better. Laurie is one frighting individual, you never want to be on his bad side. The first few chapters prove that, but if there is someone he's afraid of sit up and take notice. But as Gemma takes care of him and tries to fix him, she's not sure if she can. But then it all goes to hell and Laurie has to decide Gemma or revenge. Read to see how it all ends. I read the description for book three and so can not wait till it releases later this month. When the colonel finds love, well it's about time he deserves it.

This is not my usual fare as military-type stories don’t generally appeal to me, but I’m very glad I kept reading this book! Capt. Laurence Madigan is a tough, commanding man who is used to getting what he wants. He is loyal and determined to complete his mission. Gemma Calloway is a great compliment to Laurence’s personality – kind, but with a spine of steel, she can simultaneously care for Laurence’s psychological pain without taking any of his crap.

Laurence and Gemma’s survivalist journey brings their fiery personalities together with primal, sensual results. This passion combined with the constant, well-paced action makes for an exciting and compelling read.

Liked but didn't love as I couldn't really connect with either Laurie or Gemma and their romance. It felt detached to me which isn't strange considering especially Laurie's background and struggles.
Did love the plot though and am curious to know where everything is headed. The end (last 70-80 pages or so) were fast-paced and definitely held my attention. Though not my favorite among the Katie Porter books it held its ground and made me want to continue reading the series.

Um so....yeah....no

Vacillated between boring me to tears to shocking me with super sexy sex scenes and clumsy espionage and back to supreme boredom and back to the toe curling sex.

Yeah....no.

Interesting, suspenseful, grim at times. The sex was occasionally erotic, more often served as a vehicle to work through the hero and heroine's issues. Not my favourite of Ms. Porter's books, this is a good read.
