Review: WE ARE THE PLAGUE [DEXT I
OF THE DEAD BOOK 1] by Steve

This first entry in the DEXT OF THE DEAD series is told in journal format. Now first-person narrative and journaling can be difficult to write intriguingly. No worries here: author Stephen D. Kuhn Jr. does it well. I was quite captivated, and believe me, the leaven of humor in the midst of such horrifying situations sure doesn't hurt at all; it was good to chuckle at interjected comic relief. Dext's diffidence is a positive aspect: he knows he's no Rambo--just an office cubicle guy. I recommend this book, and series, to zombie fans, as well as to any readers looking to see a story well tuned.

This was a fast paced read. The characters were well thought out and worked well to balance each other out. I enjoy the sense of humor and wit throughout, it helped keep the book from seeming to dark and monotone. I am looking forward to getting the rest of the series as well hopefully soon.

Now, this book is different than any other zombie book that I have read. It starts off with a rescue team finding a journal clutched in the hand of a dead person. They transcribe this journal and send it to Colonel Lang.

This was different to read, but really read more like a story. Even though you are reading 'journal entries' this story is intriguing and keeps you reading entry after entry to see where Dext and his crew end up.

Dext starts out alone, but quickly runs into two others and they band together. Junior, Cutty and Dext. Cutty and Junior's relationship is unusually interesting but funny. These three make a good team, Cutty is the brute and great in melee combat while Junior is great with the rifle. Then there is Dext and he is a runner.

The trio continues on in search of a rescue station and they end up finding a few more survivors. Kylee (a military soldier) and Wyatt (a teenage boy) are the new additions to the group. They hole up in a cabin for a few days until tragedy forces them to move on.

The journal outlines how this group of people survived, lived, suffered loss and tragedy and the horrible things people do to survive. It shows all different sides of humanity and what it has become in face of the apocalypse.

Dext talks about a new community they join up with for a short time and the very unorthodox rules they enforce. It portrays the barbaric side of many survivors and the methods they will embrace in order to ensure their survival.

Each character of the main group is likeable and realistic. Throughout this book we get to see these characters grow and develop while keeping their will to help others. They are a neat little family.

The story is fast paced with a great deal of action. The story and characters are easy to follow and it is one of those books that you don't want to put down. I really enjoyed the way this book was written as journal entries.

Great book and I can't wait to read the second one!

I was given the book Dext of the Dead by Steve Kuhn in exchange for an honest review.
I must admit I was a little bit sceptical when I found out this book was based on a journal. I don't normally read journals but decided to read it anyway as the author was kind enough to give me a free copy. I was quite surprised to find I really enjoyed it I couldn't put it down. Even though it's based on a journal it reads like a book.

Soldier, SSG Chalmers finds a journal written by a guy called Dexter clutched in the hands of a dead body. In the journal he reads ily entries about Dext and the people he meets along the way, not all good. The journal holds valuable information about the plague and how this group survives. It also shows how survival affects human nature and the things people do just to live another day. Does the journal also hold the cure to this terrible plague amongst its pages?

Steve Kuhn has done a wonderful job on this story, I would not change a thing. The characters are well thought out and the fight scenes very graphical. I would say this is a really unique and well written book, Steve is a very talented writer. Looking forward to reading more of this series. I give it 5 stars, the first book can be found at amazon for under $2.

This is a thrilling zombie book. I know everyone seems to write or make a movie about zombies right now, which I think makes it even more difficult to bring something to the table that is worth reading or watching. This one is definitely one of those. Stephen is an excellent writer and I really enjoy his writing style. It has a great flow to it and the pace of the book is just right, no boredom or rushing in this one.

The author manages to make a excellent mix of characters. Dexter clearly is my favorite but he wouldn't be as good with all the others, Cutty and Kylee just to name a few more of my more favorite characters. He is definitely developing the characters, as much as it is possible going from day to day over the course of a shorter period of time.

I can only recommend reading this series, and I am already onto the second part. I look forward to see how he unravels it all.

I have received this book from the author for an honest review.

Let me start by saying if I could I would give this 3.5 stars. It's definitely out of my normal reading element yet I still enjoyed it. I found myself snorting at some off handed one liner or out right laughing out loud at a description. The characters are enjoyable and easy to relate to and I love the writing from a journal point of view. My only "negative" comments would be that some of the phrases could use a little more affirmative definitions; example geeks...took me a chapter or two to realize which group of characters were the geeks. My second "negative" is the foul language, I guess this is more of a warning than a negative comment. I totally see how the characters use the language but at the same time I felt some of it was a bit repetitive and not needed. Over all I enjoyed this and look forward to the rest in the series!

IF YOU LIKE ZOMBIES...YOU WILL LIKE "WE ARE THE PLAGUE: DEXT OF THE DEAD!

This is a well written and edited zombie apocalyptic story. Author, Steve Kuhn does a great job of developing characters that are relatable and easy to like and care about.

There is a good balance of horror, thrills, action and adventure. Each character is like someone you know which makes them all the more real.

The story ends very abruptly and that is my main complaint. I was shocked when it ended. I am going on to the next novella to find the answers to what happens next? If you enjoy the book, I know you will, so be prepared to go right to the second book in the series.

KUDOS, MR. Kuhn on a story very well told....on to the the next book.

I agreed to read this book in exchange for an honest review. I can honestly say, I enjoyed it. As a fan of the television show The Walking Dead, I immediately found myself creating the scenes in my head and rooting for specific characters. The post-apolyptic world of zombies stays true to form of the world building we see in TWD. This story centers around Dext, a self proclaimed "runner" that meets up with some interesting characters as they all attempt to save themselves from the reanimated dead. The reader sees friendships tested, family bonded broken & overall the pure will of mankind pushed to the limits in hope of survival.
