Viking Brides #1

The Reluctant Princess

Rate this book
THERE'S A... VIKING IN MY LIVING ROOM!

Elli Thorson, displaced Nordic princess, was used to an occasional reminder of where she came from. But even she was surprised at the sight of the handsome if hulking man in her apartment. He said he'd come by order of her father, the king -- to bring Elli home by any means possible. And though she didn't want to go, the idea of a journey with this "warrior" was strangely appealing...

Hauk FitzWyborn, the king's right-hand man, knew what His Royal Highness really wanted from his daughter -- to marry the man who would be king. And that man was most assuredly not Hauk, he knew, even as he struggled to resist the beautiful princess. Still, as her loveliness reminded him, they were in California now -- where even the wildest dreams could come true...

Started this on a whim because I happened to have the whole series--the idea is cute, but this one was only OK. Elli Thorson's a princess who's grown up in California. Her estranged father sends his top man, Hauk FitzWyborn, to bring her home for a visit, by any means necessary. His parents never married, which made him a lower-class citizen in their little country. They feel a strong attraction to each other, but realize that they ought not act on it.

Elli dithered a little too much for my taste in the earlier parts of the book--once she'd decided to go (against her mother's wishes), she dragged her feet preparing for no apparent reason, making her seem childish. And she seemed to have so little regard for the traditions of her home country; it didn't make me better disposed to like her.

Hauk's quite devoted to his king and understands his position. It's definitely delightful to see him get his heart's desire in the end.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've read this story. While not nearly as good as some of the stories that I've gone through since I first read it, it's still one of my favourites. The description that the author wrote of Hauk is enough to make any woman salivate with the mere thought of him. Plain and simple; he sounds like a hunk. What woman wouldn't want a sexy, bad-ass Viking fighting for her? Ah, the memories this book brings back. I was such a sweet and innocent young girl back then. A lot has changed, hehe.
